Say hello to your new 'Idol' judge ...

Mariah Carey is just full of announcements lately.

The 43-year-old singer and mom of twins recently revealed on Twitter that she has a new song, called "Triumphant," set to arrive in early August, and she's also confirmed that she'll be a new judge on "American Idol."

"It's gonna be so much fun working on @AmericanIdol," Carey posted Monday afternoon. "As a singer-songwriter, I'm excited to help find and nurture new talent."

In a statement confirming Carey's new gig, Fox's President of Alternative Entertainment, Mike Darnell, called Carey "the real deal," while "Idol" executive producer and creator Simon Fuller added how "proud" they are "to have one of the world's greatest-ever female singers join our show. Mariah defines the word 'Idol' and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her.”

Carey's new role as an "Idol" judge has been widely speculated for weeks, to the point that her husband Nick Cannon even joked that the Fox series may not be able to afford her. "That's a lot of money," Cannon kidded with TMZ. "If they gave J. Lo $20 million, they might have to double that!" We're sure the rumors on Carey's payday will start flying any minute now.

Carey will join Randy Jackson, the one "Idol" judge remaining (for now, at least), at the judges' table in January 2013. Earlier this month, both Lopez and Steven Tyler announced they were departing the show.

Was Carey the right choice for a judge? Tell us on iReport and in the comments below!

Sorry she was NOT the right choice for the show. I think that having famous ppl on the show was fun for awhile. How about actually having a person from the public, you know the ppl that help pay these people, by buying their music, clothes and whatever else they sell. Maybe a contest should be done to where someone from the US for one season could be a judge. I know music and vocals. I studied music for 15 years. Some of those people the judges last season said were great um need their ears checked.

Idol needs judges who are experts in some way in the music industry. And of course they need to really know how to judge – to give honest, direct, meaningful feedback. America's Got Talent is a general talent show, so that's fine for Stern who does a great job there. Their best judge ever, in fact.

Good choice, but the show should NEVER be about the celebrity of the judges; it is about the contestants. That's why I watch it. That said, I would never watch it if the likes of Charlie Sheen were to show up at the judges' table. Maybe that's why the show has lost some of its following, because it tries to raise viewers through who sits at the table. Bad move. Just make sure they are competent to judge.

The show should be put to rest! Mariah is not worth 20 million nor was Jennifer Lopez. Mariah will bring her worthless husband who rides her coat tails to the show and he'll be looking for his 20 million. All of these reality shows are a joke. Isn't it sad what this world has become. People are more interested in watching other people's problems that solving their own. America has gone down the tube with obama and illegals (one and the same). 14th amendment (drop a baby and get your free stuff). IT'S IS NOT FREE. WE THE TAXPAYERS SUPPORT YOUR WORTHLESS LIVES. now we have these worthless shows (oh mariah says, I want to help someone with their talent). What a joke she is! She just wants to get her reality show.

Changes to AI have to start BEFORE the judges are picked; begin with the auditions. I recommend this: Jimmy picks two other industry production experts and THEY do the auditions. The judges don't see the contestants UNTIL they are in Hollywood. The judges are supposed TO BE mentors; if you remember the early years (big sigh), there were vocal coaches to help with performance, but the judges were supposed to offer constructive critique (stop laughing!). Simon received the lion's share of attention because he critiqued from the business executive stance: his label was writing the check.

Honestly, I'd rather have Alicia Keys than Mariah Carey -she'd be ok as a 'revolving guest judge'. Alicia doesn't have the best of voices, but as a musician, she's more rounded than Mariah.

More importantly, AI has to STOP finding and 'pushing' (behind the scenes voting manipulation) singers they think will be the most 'moldable' to a middle of the road Pop audience; a 26-year old has a more defined and distinct sense of genre and style than an 18-year old (don't get into a Scotty war -his genre was pretty well set to his voice; think Jessica Sanchez -great chops, but no one knew what her 'real' voice was like; what genre really moves and showcases her vocal talents?).

I think Mariah made a HUGE mistake doing Idol. I'm not sure it's worth whatever they are paying her. The show is on the decline, Mariah has a history of instability and appearing on TV in the Idol format would highlight any abnormal behavior. She just doesn't need the scrutiny that a show like A.I. will bring. I think she will regret it at the end of the day. She is an awesome songwriter, but I think she should find another way to help aspiring singers/songwriters.

They better get Randy off the judge's table, too. Great guy, lousy judge. Always has been. And if they put both Mariah AND Randy as judges, the credibility of the show is practically gone because Randy is Mariah's manager. He needs to go. Fresh start with all new judges. Something they've needed for years, except for Simon Cowell. He was great. Always said what the viewers (at least most of them) were thinking. Idol needs judges who will be totally and completely direct and honest. None of the bullcrap, cliche nice comments ala Steven and JLo. Steven thought everyone was great and although JLo made gave some crticisms once in awhile, it was way too rare. And Randy turned into a Simon wannabe... trying to be the tough guy after 10 yrs of being a clueless wimp. Haha.

Here's what Idol needs: Put Jimmy Aldine at the judges' table and let the 'guest' mentors do the mentoring. Jimmy's the bomb and will do a better job than any of the idol judges ever did..(excluding Simon, who always told it like it was).

Don't know who Jimmy Aldine is, but Jimmy Iovine with an i is the head of Interscope Records and is the musical producer of the show. And yes, he does know the music business better than anyone on the show.

After reading the comments, I have to agree–just because she's sold 100 million copies or so, and has posted more #1 songs than any single act in history–is that any reason Mariah Carey should be a judge on Idol? After all, she hasn't had a hit in the last 3 weeks, and of course being over 30 means her brain has rotted and she couldn't possibly offer any insight to the carbon-copy musical geniuses who appear on idol these days! Get someone like the one-hit wonders Idol has produced over the last 2 or 3 years. I'm sure Kelly or Carrie wouldn't do–they're 30 or so as well! Come on, bloggers–wake up!!

BTW, considering having Aretha Franklin as a judge? This isn't an all-you-can-eat contest at Krystal, this is supposed to be a talent show, but since Aretha Franklin is neither talented or relevant I can definitely feel the show execs working. The last time Aretha was relevant was when the USA just finished the Civil War.

And Adam Lambert? The guy/gal couldn't even sing when 'it' made an appearance on the show this season. It must be a prerequisite that judges must be annoying, past their prime, and completely devoid of musical talent.

And, would someone kick Ryan Seacrest in the face, please? What is the appeal with that freak?

    July 24, 2012 at 3:44 am | Report abuse |

You are an idiot. Aretha Franklin talentless? Not relevant? You need to bone up on your musical history. AFs contributions to the music industry are unprecedented. Her amazing voice and unerring musical sense have done more for that industry, not to mention African Americans and women in general in that industry, than Mariah Carey could ever hope to achieve. If you enjoy pop music, that is your business, but you should know your facts about history before posting instead of making statements like this and looking foolish.

  79. Your 3rd Judge

American Idol has been done for years. They're the Brett Favre of TV shows, and they should simply retire the show instead of always trying to reinvent it with different judges all the time. Besides, J-Blow and Steven Tyler shamelessly used the show to promote their own garbage/videos so that the focal point wasn't the new talent, but themselves. Add to the fact that Jimmy Iovine is older than dirt, and is the only one out of all of them who is consistent... consistently wrong. Has that guy been right about anything or anyone? He's as much a fraud as J-Lo, Tyler, and Randy Jackson.

Tell Randy that the 1980's called and that they want all their over-used cliches back. That whole 'dawg' thing is dumb and makes him look even dumber than he normally appears.

If they want a true judge, they should bring in Judge Judy. That loud-mouthed, self-important codger would be a nice addition. Between her, Carey, and Jackson, they wouldn't be able to agree or disagree on anyone, plus we would get Judy's wit and wisdom that you can usually only find at Thursday Night Church Bingo.

Mariah isn't "blessed"; she's hackneyed and finished, but she's a great role model for young girls everywhere who can't decide whether or not to go crazy, marry a rich flash in the pan, and dress in clothes that are reserved for babies and toddlers.

Bye bye, Idol. Simon got out while the getting was good. Simon: the only good judge that show ever had.

I'm a fan of the "old" Mariah Carey music. I'm really disappointed that American Idol keeps hiring "almost washed up, looking for a 2nd career jump start" artists as amateur talent judges. JLo and Steven Tyler used American Idol to further their own careers, they weren't that interested in the talent on the stage. Mariah Carey is a talented singer, but, her time is OVER just like JLo's time is done. No one in American Idol's target demographic of 18-34 has any interest and watching mid-aged women gyrate in 1-piece sparkly catsuits, shaky post-baby hips.

I'm offically NOT watching American Idol anymore. I only watched about 2 episodes last season, I'm sure it will be less this time around. But, good luck Mariah....

Well, I don't usually respond to these things, but your comment literally shocks me. I didn't know anyone in the world would actually compare the actress Jennifer Lopez with the international SuperDiva singing sensation Mariah Carey. When it comes to taking advice on how to become a successful performing musician, it's like asking George Clooney instead of Mick Jagger. Seriously... You don't have to like Mariah's style to acknowledge her freakish-ly otherworldly vocal abilities. I mean no offense to JLo, but she reminds me of milk toast.. or a decaf sugarfree vanilla latte. Mariah Carey is THE reason many young women shamelessly attempt to hit those crazy high notes – in fact, jLo was probabaly listening to Mariah for TEN YEARS before she was able to even release her first album! .. It is important to give credit where credit is due – and to remember that jenny from the block got nothin on mc's emotions!!! i think i wanna go try out on American Idol now, just because Mariah will be there 🙂

Mariah is a great choice and I'm glad she agreed to do the show. Not only has she been through some life experiences, but she's kept reputation upright. She can talk about the do's and the don'ts of the performances AND of the industry and do it with personal, substantiating knowledge.

J-Lo was better than Paula and Kelly. Not sure if Mariah can be better judge but it will be interesting to watch. Actually, Steven Tyler was funny but did not add much as a judge. I'm not a big country fan myself, but I kind of like the Garth Brooks idea....

I think the judge turnover thing is simply the new direction Idol is going. I think it is intentional and smart, fresh faces and star attraction. Some People may not like Mariah personally or her vocal style, but if you think she is not talented or not a star you're an idiot.

Mariah who? Oh yeah, she sold a ton of records 15 years ago but no one can name any of her songs today. She's the singer who can hold a steady note so she needs to shake her voice all around in an attempt to cover up this flaw. She's the most over-rated woman in the business. If you don't believe me, just watch the show go even further in the toilet. Watching Mariah is about as interesting as watching paint dry and she helps me answer that age old question, would you rather be blind or deaf? If Mariah is singing than deaf! Definately deaf!

Idol is fading....and fast. If they are stupid enough to hire Mariah then they deserve to be gone. Mariah is deperate and so is Idol. I can see it all now. She will act cute and diva-like, then cry and say how hard it is to let people go. Then perform a few numbers that she just happens to have ready and then she will launch her new album, thanks to all the exposure. Then in a season or two she too will be gone "to explore other options". Idol originally was about the contestants, now it's just junk.

Idol is still the same as it always was. They go around looking for young singing talent. They pool the best 150 together and then trim it down as they go until there is only one left. The fans vote to keep or get rid of people. The judges are there just to pick the talent and then America trims down the final 20 as always. The judges are there mostly as entertainment and to give their opinions. Saying Idol is good or bad in different years because of the judges is silly. I will say I enjoyed the show more after Simon left. I don't enjoy watching him belittle the contestants. That is rude.

Mariah Carey hyping herself again, I see.

Carey has played the game of trying to make herself seem popular as well as anyone else. What Carey doesn't mention whenever she trumpets the number of #1 singles she's had is that a large percentage of those singles made it to the top by her deep discounting the physical product to ridiculous prices like 39 cents because record charts are partly based upon total sales rather than dollar amounts. Her record company lost money on each sale. How many of you can sing along to such big money losing singles like "Don't Forget About Us", "Touch My Body" and "We Belong Together"?

So, since Mariah made the decision (again for self-promotion and ego) to sell her records for a loss one could make the argument that Mariah Carey is the least popular singer of all time.

I won't be watching Idol this year with this shameless hypester on board.

A star was born because of their producer. Get producers on the show, not Stars. I'm not saying Carey cannot sing, she can out-sing 98 percent of the population knowing her background, but a person like Clive Davis, Babyface, Dr.Luke, Stargate... They may be or look boring but if you want quality singers coming out of that idol pool, then these people are the star makers.

Only an idiot would deny that Mariah Carey isn't qualified to do this job based on her know how of the music business and her longevity which at 42 already surpasses most. She has how many hits? All the judges did last year was compliment everyone in fear of hurting anyones feelings. It was the worst group of talent since I starting watching 6 years ago. The Xfactor's top 10 was so much more talented. I downloaded one song from American Idol. I downloaded about 20 from Xfactor. The other problem is the voting system. Is it any clue that the most talented rarely win when you have a bunch of teenagers texting based on charisma or looks over talent as many times as they want? I always wonder who would win if it was a one person one vote show and just how many votes that would be.

While I'm not a huge fan of her music, Mariah Carey is a seasoned pro in terms of music, vocals, stage presence and the ability to entertain. And, she's worked closely with Randy Jackson on her past albums...so my guess is that if he stays, they should probably complement each other. I do think that if it weren't for Idol, J-Lo's career would have remained in neutral. I think that even Steven Tyler and Aerosmith got a bit of a "bump" in popularity as a result of Idol. Steven really surprised me with his gentle and encouraging nature...I developed a greater respect for him and his music as a result of his appearance on the show.

What I've always liked about Randy Jackson is that he is a music business insider...and despite his repeated "buzz phrases," he really does know the business. However, my guess is that J-Lo will see her career go into a dormant stage in the near future...she definitely got a "bump" as a result of Idol. It even landed her a few endorsement deals (Kohl's) that she probably wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

Should be interesting to see who else they tap for the third judge, assuming that Randy Jackson sticks around.

While Mariah has a great voice (she didn't get where she's at now if she didn't! So YES, she DOES have talent and knows music!), I hope she can be articulate in her critique like Jennifer was. That was what I loved about Jenny being a judge. She was very, very supportive and kind in her critiique. Something that goes a long way. No need to bash someone (I'm talking about the ones that CAN sing! NOT the idiots that audition that sound like nails on a chalkboard) just because they had a "bad night" and their performance wasn't up to par. I think Mariah will bring a lot to the table IF she can bring her ability to express like she can in her music. Otherwise, she won't last either.

I agree Dave. A lot of negative comments here, but mostly from trolls who would complain about anything from their mom's basement. But you're right, Mariah & Randy's history should play well if he remains, which I hope he does.

And the best part about her joining Idol, is that it's a slap in the face to Simon Cowell and his X-factor! He tried in vane to get her, but no luck! Anytime Simon gets publicly insulted, which this is, it's a good day!

Steven was great? I dunno what show you were watching. In his two years, he probably said 3 interesting and helpful things. Howard Stern has done more in 5 shows of AGT than Steven did in 2 years.

I think her talent will be one of the greatest contributor to American Idol. I will certainly watch!

Mariah is an amazing vocalist. I don't care for her new stuff, but her old stuff is unmatcable. Her new stuff is too much rap and not using her vocal talents. However, when she reqally sings it is truly amazing. What a range!!!!!!!! Will watch just because if her.

My gosh people sure do keep up with their daily dose of hateraide and their hypocrisy! If you guys could get away with charging 40 million or so to a network just for showing up, I am more than POSITIVE you would! lol so get off that lame pedestal that you have yourself on and get over it!

That's the final nail in the Idol coffin. I watched from day one, but not anymore. What a mistake... I guess the Idol producers believes Mariah's self-severing hype.

So much horrible news & stories on TV that I REALLY enjoy FLUFF. American Idol is FLUFF and I love to watch it. I HOPE this is NOT the last season. I think Mariah Carey will do great – she can really sing and thus should be a great judge.

The show has sucked for years. I'm pretty sure she is only doing this for the payday....Idol is a fast sinking ship so why come on now except for the $$$.

@SoljaGirl: Ah, there it is! The alternative version of the inane "Who cares?" post. Thank you for affirming that the id!ots are still alive and well (and posting) out there. And, now, the standard response: "you clicked and commented, so YOU care." You nit.

She is the most ungrateful woman on the planet. She is probably going to make twice what the others make and she will be the most difficult to work with. I won't be watching.
