Rotten Tomatoes disables comments on 'Dark Knight Rises' reviewsRatings for "The Dark Knight Rises" have dipped a bit on movie review aggregation site RottenTomatoes.com, sitting at 86 percent fresh after a series of written standing ovations arrived earlier this week. Clearly, a rating like that means the majority of critics were pretty pleased with Christopher Nolan's final Batman film, but as far as those who weren't? Extreme commenter backlash.
On Monday, Rotten Tomatoes had to shut down its comments on "The Dark Knight Rises" reviews because fans who disagreed with the few negative opinions were rabidly expressing their distaste. Rotten Tomatoes' Editor in Chief Matt Atchity wrote in an open letter on the site Monday saying that he and his staff "knew full well that when the first negative review came in, the reviewer would get pasted in the comments." And yet it seems they didn't anticipate the vitriol that was prompted by a negative review from Marshall Fine of HollywoodandFine.com, who called "Dark Knight Rises" the weakest in Nolan's trilogy, and a second unimpressed review from the Associated Press. Fine told IndieWire that, like Atchity, he knew when he wrote the review that he was in for some hate mail, but he didn't anticipate the volume he wound up receiving. "I really did not expect this level of response," Fine said. "I knew it would probably be controversial just because I was the first negative one, and the first person to bust the 100 percent always comes in for some negative response, but it was like a tsunami." (A tsunami that also crashed his website for a time.) The second fire-starting critique, written by the AP's Christy Lemire, led to "several hours" of Atchity and his team "removing comments with misogynistic or threatening remarks" from the review, and the eventual disabling of comments. Atchity ended up updating his open letter to state that comments on "The Dark Knight Rises" reviews would be down for a couple of days, and he told the New York Times Tuesday that he expects them to be up and running again Thursday or Friday, once more reviews are posted and more people have seen the film to be able to have a fruitful discussion. His advice to commenters in the meantime was to "Just take a deep breath, step away from the computer, and maybe go for a walk. Have a smoke if you need one. There are plenty of other things to get angry about, like war, famine, poverty and crime. But not movie reviews." |

Usually I do not learn post on blogs, however I wish to say that this write-up very pressured me to take a look at and do so! Your writing taste has been surprised me. Thanks, quite great article.
Bravo, what necessary words..., a magnificent idea
“Rises” is an incredible film all around. The performances are Oscar-worthy and should not be brushed aside simply for being a comic book movie.
The action of this film is incredible and should be witnessed at the IMAX.
Go see “The Dark Knight Rises”, that is, if you didn’t already go to a midnight showing.
I guess the question is what causes fans to completely obsess and feel they have to protect their investment in a film? why can't they just admit the times a movie might not be that good?. I wonder if kids from the 1970s were the same way as they are now but had not Internet to unveil themselves.
We just saw this movie and it is unbelievably awesome! Like I give a damn what the critics say? This third film was great in everyway. Great cast which did a fantastic job. Bale's role as Batman has change that character forever much like Daniel Craig's take on Bond. Definitly going to see it again this weekend.
Batman dies in the end, another one takes his place...nuff said. this movie sucks.
And you didn't see it either, did you? Pompous buffoon, you just made your asinine comment to stir up sh!t.
Its obvious you didnt see the film, it wasnt identical to the comic.. so hey there... stop being dumb.
Hello gang.
We will watching this great spectacle.
Batmans is really a super hero.
another thurdsay on the forum with the moo rons
The reason for the anger is the nature of these critics and their reviews. It is blatantly obvious they are dissing the Dark Knight Rises to make a name for themselves. Because once you read their reviews you realize they have very little to grip about. Then you see which movies they loved and you realize how stupid they truly are. Most of the negative reviews state that the movie is too long (nearly three hours) and too complicated to follow. If you can't watch a movie for three hours after you've paid 15$, then you've got bigger problems. And if the first two batman movies were to hard to follow, then grab a coloring book and wait outside while the adults go in and watch an amazing film. One critic on the site admitted that he didn't see the film yet but had the audacity to still give it a negative review.
Enough ranting, either way this movie is going to do destroy the box office and maybe redefine what a trilogy should be. At least for super hero films.
You didn't read the entire article, nbafan - it's just a movie. Take a deep breath and maybe got for a walk.
You realize that a good amount of these critics already make money reviewing movies.
Do you remember the name of the guy who gave the godfather a bad review? Me neither (or anyone else in the world for that matter)
You don't 'make a name for yourself' by reviewing a movie when you are a movie critic.
Jesus, this is CNN, not some nerdy forum. You're doing exactly what the damn story is about.
To be honest, IMO the movie came across a little dull and corny. I felt as though there were several instances where the lines delivered held little to no weight on the plot and come across as weak and pointless.
Movie lacked that true badass factor which usually oozes from Nolan's action scenes.
I think Rotten Tomatoes is an overly trafficed website. They act like a bunch of jerks overly taken with themselves. A critic is a vehicle not a destination. The fact that they gave Batman Rises a negative reviewed makes me more likely to see it.
This is not surprising because Batman/Nolan fans are some of the most viciously rabid groupies on the planet. They will swarm any site they think has dissed their idols and have a long history of making threatening and hateful comments about critics, other fans and anyone who doesn't worship Batman like they do. Batfans spent four years making life hell on many fan sites by hurling insults at every other movie they thought might rival their favorite and trolling forums dedicated to other comic book movies. Their self-esteem is tied up in the success of the Batman movies, which explains why they go psycho when they feel that success is threatened in any way. The ability to make anonymous threats just emboldens them. They give all Batfans a bad name, but I'd be willing to bet that they're proud of that.
i have seen the movie! its brilliant. critics are stupid, they dont know what they are saying.its definitely the best ending to the epic trilogy and just might be better than the previous one- the dark knight. my mind=blown away
Take. A. Deep. Breath. Please.
I agree. Most critics think their job is to creative in saying how much they dislike certain movies. Most critics are so full of themselves they forget it's not about them. I just ignore the critics and make up my own mind. I go to the theatre once in a while, but usually wait til it comes to Redox or Netflix, that way if it sucks, it only cost me 1$. Critics suck.
Just have one!
Ahahaha Achity or whatever's advice is hilarious
Czech mah dubs.
I saw this movie twice and it is the worst gleetastic pile of egxcrement ever. It deserves 5 rotten tomatoes.
i agree with you my good friend. You are both wise and intelligent. This is the dumbest movie of all time. It stinks.
Lol you saw it twice to realize that its disgusting... Did someone hit you on the head so u forgot that u actually saw the movie once. LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL.........
@ Starfire- you forgot to change your name when you replyed to yourself. lol
Why did you see it twice?
Why did you see it twice, then?
Starfish ruined 2 seats with her shrimp taco. Hazmat team had to take care of the odor.
L M F A O! That is too da mn funny. Starfire the troll didn't change it's name to talk to itself.
@jellybean – okay... You can come up for air now.
Okay, I'm breathing now but, hey, it was funny. : )
Seems like everyone posting their opinions on the internet are so full of themselves... like people who talk too much just to hear themselves speak as if anyone gives a sht ! So many Blowhards !! JMHO – LOL !
Just like you.
Um, I don't have to see the movie to tell you: IT SUXX. Come track me down, you Batman-loving wimps.
If you have not seen it you have no basis for your comment, worm. Crawl back in your hole.
