Anderson Cooper says he's gay, happy and proudIn a lengthy e-mail message to the Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan that was posted to the site on Monday, CNN's Anderson Cooper comes out publicly as gay. Sullivan, who writes that he has counted Cooper as a friend for more than two decades, says in the article that he asked Cooper to weigh in on a recent Entertainment Weekly piece that examined the trend of gay people coming out in a "more ... matter-of-fact way" than in the past. Sullivan, who is openly gay and an advocate of same-sex marriage, says he asked for Cooper's opinion "for reasons that are probably obvious to most." And in an e-mailed response, which Sullivan writes the "Anderson Cooper 360" anchor gave him permission to post, Cooper writes that he's thought about the topic over the years, and has decided to be clear about the fact that he’s gay.
Cooper says he refrained from being so straightforward in the past because he was trying "to maintain some level of privacy in my life," for both personal and professional reasons. "As long as a journalist shows fairness and honesty in his or her work, their private life shouldn't matter," Cooper writes. "I’ve stuck to those principles for my entire professional career, even when I’ve been directly asked 'the gay question,' which happens occasionally." Recently, however, Cooper says he's been reminded "that … the tide of history only advances when people make themselves fully visible. There continue to be far too many incidences of bullying of young people, as well as discrimination and violence against people of all ages, based on their sexual orientation, and I believe there is value in making clear where I stand." He said he wasn’t comfortable with the assumption by some that because he wasn’t speaking about his sexuality, he was trying to hide something – an impression that he finds “distressing because it is simply not true.” And so, for the record, Cooper writes: "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn’t be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud." He adds that he's always been this open with family, friends and colleagues. "In a perfect world, I don't think it's anyone else's business, but I do think there is value in standing up and being counted," Cooper says. "The ability to love another person is one of God’s greatest gifts, and I thank God every day for enabling me to give and share love with the people in my life," Cooper says in closing. "I still consider myself a reserved person and I hope this doesn’t mean an end to a small amount of personal space. Some of these comments are really horrible. Anderson Cooper is a great reporter, a fine anchor and writer and has always come across as a compassionate, humorous and nice guy, it's disgusting to see these hateful, trashy and bigoted comments directed at him. I'm glad that he emphasized how happy, proud and comfortable he was with himself and his life because you'd need to be in order to survive in the face of so much prejudice and hate. Anderson, you are awesome, stay strong!

Dude had a extremely respectable career before this, I'm straight as an arrow, and my thoughts towards him havent chaned at all, he doesn't put himself into the stereotype that some think is necessary, he stays true to life and I'll always think that is the highest moral and respect to the world with his position.
Looking back to December 2009, I remember him making a similar declaration ..... about being gay. I guess he didn't get enough traction from that declaration! Before last week I think that there were only three people on the planet that didn't know he was gay. There was a goat herder in Siberia, A llama rancher in Patagonia and an elderly monk in Tibet. Can we look forward to him coming out of the closet on an annual basis ...... and after that on monthly basis. The is just a narcissistic effort to gain additional attention!

You either didn't read the entire article, or are just so stupid that you can't comprehend the fact that this article wasn't written because Cooper wanted to make headlines by coming out, it was written to a friend in response to a question, and his friends asked if he could make it public. The whole point of the article was how he DIDN'T want to make it a big deal, and that is why he didn't talk about it. Not because he was ashamed of who he was...he just didn't feel it was relevant. (which it isn't) There are a lot of celebrities (Beyonce and Jay-Z, Kristen Stewart...) who are straight who don't like talking about their private lives–it doesn't make them dishonest or hateful of themselves. They just want privacy.

As for Cooper, my opinion of him as a journalist will not be affected by this revelation; just how he does his job.
It is true that there is information available to educate oneself about the Bible and it's creation. Just be careful in your sourcing, because there are reams of material to "educate" you that it's the infallible dictum if God; or that it's a fictional piece of tripe; depending on where you get your "education" from. Um, gay people serve an evolutionary purpose. This world is overpopulated. Imagine if all the gays would procreate. You really think our species could survive longer and better with an overabundance of people, starving, fighting, and dying for resources? The more people without kids, the more attention will be spent on the kids that do exist. And, life isn't about having babies, anyway. It's about living. Also, AIDS is not just a gay thing. It started with a gay person, yes. But not every disease that is started by a straight person is immediately called the "straight" disease. Ahhh people are stupid.

However, when people make this much of an ordeal about 'coming out', it's no longer in the privacy of your own bedroom (and, no one brought it up other than them). I don't think most of you even read the article. He states clearly why he "came out". First, he was already completely out to all his friends, family, and colleagues. He only came out "publicly" because he felt that by "hiding" it he was giving the impression that it was something to be ashamed of. It is not. However in many communities – being "out" is dangerous, people get beaten and killed for being gay. That is why it is valuable that people who are in the public eye are honest about this. It has a huge impact on some people's lives. Just this week in Memphis, TN – in one of the most liberal areas of the whole region, a woman in a restaurant was beat right there in the restaurant because the man did not like that she was a lesbian. Right there just sitting in a restaurant eating. Beaten. For. Being. Gay. "America! F_ck Yeah!"

It's important to remember that Anderson Cooper didn't come out yesterday. He's been out for years, to the people who he's chosen to share that aspect of his life with; he simply chose not to discuss it with the public until now, when he feared that his silence could be misinterpreted. We don't get to know his coming-out story. It's none of our business, and that is completely and totally his prerogative.

I have wanted to ask this question for a long time: why do people who are gay or lesbian, etc. feel they have to announce it? I have never heard a straight person do this. No one has a need to know!

I think a better question is why in this day and age do they still feel they need to keep it quiet.

Couple of good reasons. First, the more people who do this, especially prominent people in our society, the more others will understand that being gay is not that unusual. Second, and more importantly, through our close mindedness and repression, both tacit and direct, we have forced many of those who are gay to live this aspect of their lives secretively. It takes courage to be openly gay, even today. While that is sad, it is still reality. So by showing courage to come out publicly, it sends a message to others to also have courage.
Out of curiosity, did you even read the article? Anderson has tried not to come forward on this for a long time. People come out, though, because other people ask them. We live in a celebrity-centric society and the masses demand to know ever more information about them. Look at yourself and your neighbors as to why they feel the need to come out, after all, you did click on this article about his personal life, didn't you?

The first verse is talking about the the light of God shining through an individual whose deeds are done to glorify God. The second verse is talking about boastful deeds which are done for self adulation to glorify the man. There is no contradiction.

Umm there is no contradiction there. The first line is saying do good deeds so people will honor your father in heaven. The second line is saying dont do those good deeds just to be seen like so many prechers do. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton just to name a few.

People should be free to live their lives as they want to, as long as they do not harm other people. The fact that CNN has this in their entertainment section shows how this is not something they are happy about. MSN has is as front page news and Fox is reporting about real issues. This guy is a good reporter and who cares about what he does off camera. Anderson puts himself on the frontline of the news in places that most of us would not want to go. I didn't know Anderson was Gay, & have always respected his professionalism and trusted his reporting. His public announcement of being gay hasn't changed my opinion of him one bit.
Agree with him on the personal and privacy issues, being in the limelight need not always open you to the intense scrutiny that is leveled at well known people. People should spend more time scrutinizing their politicians, financiers and clergy and stop dogging "celebrities".

The last two comments speak volumes of the deplorable conditions of the nations education system. It seems this country is a breeding ground for ignorance and stupidity. The citizens of the United States have much to learn.
I am glad that Anderson has been able to publicly admit what many have known, especially in the gay community in NYC. No matter what, his coming out will only help many young LGBTQ kids as they struggle with their own decisions to see that it's OK to be gay, that success will be achieved and that they are no different than anyone else.
On a side note and more to a point Anderson makes in the article about journalists remaining neutral so as to remain bias in the news, I think it comes across false as we have seen with both his nighttime program and his new daytime show. His recent episode on his daytime show was to me a "personal commentary" that verged on being a little bit of bullying by inviting a woman onto to the show only to rudely kick her off with a slight of hand and a "I'm done with you" statement. Then his continuous use of ridicuLIST segment on his nighttime program mixed with his personal commentary on so many things over the years... his refusal to report on anything Paris Hilton and his comments about her (even though I was SO HAPPY TO HEAR HIM DO IT because I was tired of her back then), his personal comments on anyone that he deems wrong, stupid, silly, ignorant or just downright RIDICULOUS... shows that although he can report the news he doesn't like being part of it.
His decision to remain PUBLICLY in the closet (outside of the major cities) was definitely more for professional career than it was for remaining journalistically objective. Again, it's amazing that he has come out, is able to help others more publicly with this revelation AND, hopefully, will be able to in the future add a more PERSONAL commentary to so many more stories when it's deemed necessary.

What a heartwarming article. However, Cooper didn't make a full disclosure. He should have added: "In my small minded interpretation of what behavior is acceptable to God, I have concluded that love is all that is needed. Obedience (to God's law) is unnecessary. My current state of happiness is proof. And you can have it to if you just step up publicly and give testimony about how you also love sin more than God".... I have to ask, should I believe the testimony of a man who is highly prejudiced towards such a conclusion? Hmm. God's statements on the matter, as given in the Bible, versus a gay man who says it's okay by God if he is gay. Tough decision, I'm sure.....

For thoes who are saying this isnt news or its about ratings, I think you all are missing the point. From what I gather in this article Mr. Cooper would rather keep this private. Because there is a much larger awareness to bullying today a person of Mr. Coopers celebrity status is displaying strength and courage by coming out. So many people know who he is, look up to him, etc. Coming out to the world could open up a lot of hatred and even potentialy ruin his career. I would say his choice to come out publicly is not about fame or ratings (because it could easily backfire) but to help encourage and build strength in others who feel traped by who they are. My hat is off to you sir.

Whilst not a US citizen, here in South Africa we are privy to most of the 360 reports by Anderson Cooper who continues to maintain an objective, educated and elightened perspective on matters of global importance to our society. That he was brave enough to put himself on the line (and sadly in the firing line) to address an issue that really is no-one's business is admirable and deserves applause. Do we all remember the day when Barbara Walters came out as straight? – no – of course not – it would be ridiculous and unncessary. So too is Anderson's announcement unneccessary but it is certainly not wasted and we thank you for the dignity you lend to the GBLT community by doing so and providing yet another solid role model for younger gay people growing up in a largely unforgiving world.

I think this guy is very professional as an anchor. He doesn't harass, he is not too aggressive but at same time still is able to get to the point. He is a bit dull and makes some weak analysis. Him declaring himself gay doesn't change my opinion about him. He is what he is. People can do what they like. I wish him the best. I have known for years that you embrace the Gay lifestyle (duh?) but that has not in the least deterred me from watching and enjoying your excellent CNN program. Of all the CNN programs yours is the one I like to watch the most. Most of the others are OK, but Wolf can be a strident sometimes.
The main reason that I am writing is that I see a fair number of posts from "gay-bashers" here and they are targeting towards your now. This is unfortunate.
I really feel sorry for people that cannot accept GBLT people into our society and their lives. They are missing so much! "Although" I am a straight man married to a straight woman, we have lots of GL friends. (BTs would be welcome too, but we don't happen to know any). The reason that I say this is that among all the people I know (mostly straight) the GLs are the most thoughtful, interesting, and compassionate people we know. They don't seem to be fettered by having to work "within the box" that society imposes on us.
My message to the GLBT phobes would be to ask: "Do your really KNOW a GBLT person?" The honest answer is probably no. Among the GL people that we personally know, two are quite accomplished organists (like Virgil Fox), one is a very accomplished organic chemist, and one is a wonder poet. I value their friendship and their lives have enriched mine. I am proud to count them among my friends.
My suggestion: become real friends with a GBLT person and you will likely enrich your life.
If you really hate GBLT people then I suggest that you really think about why you feel that way. If you are honest with yourself then you'll probably discover that you learned that hatred from your parents or church and that your are not thinking for yourself. What has a GBLT person ever actually "done" to you? Most likely nothing.
Think about it. Give the person standing next to you a hug. Probably they'll hug you back.

He could just have easily elected to give up info that his hair was red before it turned grey. I support Anderson Cooper and his decision to announce the fact that he is Gay. I believe that Mr. Cooper is a role model for "First Class Journalism" and for young men and women who need to see that the majority of Americans accept a person for their contributions to society and support for all human rights. As a Conservative Republican, I support Gay Rights, Women's Rights, and all Human Rights. America was not built on hate, but rather on the premise that all men and women are equal, at least from my vantage point.
He's not a role model. His keeping them honest programs never delve into the lurid, criminal, and plain wrong goings-on of high profile democrats.
