Ann Curry steps down from 'Today' post

“Today" co-anchor Ann Curry confirmed speculation on Thursday with an announcement that she's stepping down from her anchor spot but not leaving the network.

Curry told viewers that Thursday marks her last time co-hosting, but she will go on to tell stories for other NBC News shows, including "Today."

The long-time anchor was surrounded by the rest of the hosting staff when she made the announcement, including Matt Lauer, Al Roker and Natalie Morales.

The moment arrived roughly a week after reports surfaced that she was headed for an exit.

“This is not easy to say but today is going to be my last morning as a regular co-host," Curry began tearfully. "I will still be a part of the 'Today' show family but I’m going to have a new title and a new role. And this is not as I expected... I never expected to leave this couch after 15 years, but I am so grateful, especially to all of you who watch, because Matt and I and everyone who sits on this couch, we often call ourselves a family. But you are the real 'Today' show family.”

Curry continued, “You are why I have ventured into dangerous places and interviewed dictators and jumped off of planes and off of bridges and climbed mountains and landed in the South Pole and convinced the Dalai Lama to come live in our studio,” she said of the work she's done over the past 15 years.

“For all of you who saw me as a groundbreaker,” she continued, “I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line but man, I did try. And so to all of you who watched, thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me touch yours.”

Curry also gave viewers a peek into her new role for NBC.

“They’re giving me some fancy new title, which essentially means that I’m going to get tickets to every big story we want to cover with a terrific team of my choosing ... we’re going to go all over the world and all over this country at a time when this country and this world needs clarity,” she explained. “We’re going to do great work, I hope, and we’re being given the chance to do the work that most of us got into journalism to do. And these stories are going to air on all the platforms of NBC News, including here on 'Today.'”

At one point she joked as Lauer looked on, "After all of these years I don’t know if I can sleep in anymore!”

“You have the biggest heart in the business,” Lauer said. “The way you care about people comes through in every single story you report."

Morales reached out to take the very emotional Curry’s hand and praise her for what she’s already done for the show and what she will do in the future.

It is not yet known when Curry will begin her new duties.

I used to be a big fan of NBC morning show but now without Ann Curry, the show doesn't appeal to me anymore. I really hate the way she was dismissed from the show. She is so intelligent and a wonderful reporter. We all love Ann Curry and we are very sad that this happened to her. NBC is making a terrible mistake.

What a mistake to treat Ann so poorly! You need her so sweet manners to offset the obnoxious manner of interviewing that Matt has developed! He words his questions to make sure the listner knows HIS view on every subject rather than the experts he interviews. The TV Controller makes it so quick to switch to something else – anything else!

Ann Curry was so-so as co anchor, but the problem is the TODAY show as a whole. Five minutes of real news, the rest is nonsense, fluff. The world is such an interesting place, why do we need to know what the octomom is up to?? We don't care!! The show dumbs down the culture of America and makes us look like idiots. Let's get some substance here. Also, where is Harry Smith?? He should be sitting in for Matt when he is away. Harry is a natural at being a host. I now watch the first 30 minutes of CBS Morning to get some "real" news.

Being a HUGE fan of "Today", I took a couple hours out of our NYC vacation to watch the taping of the show at Rockefeller Center plaza last September. Ann, by far, was the most genuine and kind of the bunch, which was even more evident when the cameras were off and she took the time to take photos and seemed to be really engaged with the folks she conversed with. Al was a close second!! In contrast, Matt and Savannah came across as being aloof and quickly ducked inside after taping their respective segments. After years of loyal viewership I have not watched "Today" since Ann was unceremoniously let go, nor do I intend to. NBC, business is business, but the WAY in which you let Ann Curry go surely will cost you viewership. GMA isn't so bad.

I think she is a classy lady and very sincere. I believe her field reporting is incredible and the skills she exhibits reading from a teleprompter is amazing as well. However, people need to be honest and admit that as a free form host she is terrible. She is a horrible off the cuff interviewer who has embarrassed herself many times with flubs and mispoken words. One of the creepiest interviews I have ever seen was one in which she interviewed Bindy Irwin not too long afterher father passed away. Youtube it if you don't believe me. NBC did her a great disservice by promoting her in the first place but they did so out of loyalty. I wish her the best in the future and look forward to seeing her doing the one job she truly excels at, field reporting.

Amen. I am just so sick of Matt Lauer. Whatever his inside connections that have kept him on instead of others, proves that "Power Hungry People" run that show, and I will now watch Good Morning America. Ann is a first rate reporter, and she has always shown kindness and compassion to all the people she has interviewed. So, just because Matt, Al Roker (whom I also do not like his offkey remarks-that just sound smart alec) and Natalie all acted so insensitive toward Ann – i along with other viewers will now not ve viewers at all.

I love Ann Curry. I would get rid of Matt and that Savannah is not the answer. She is about a foot taller than all of them and looks uncomfortable. Natalie and Ann are the best. They are I guess just to serious and believable. I think Ann Curry should host her own news show.

I agree.... Ann Curry should get her OWN show. That would serve NBC right. Why did they get rid of her? She's such a beautiful and classy lady. And a good journalist too.
Savannah is NOT the answer. She and Matt aren't going to make a good pair.

I've always liked Ann Curry and she is a great reporter. What makes me mad is how they put the person that they just fired in a position where they have to act like they chose to leave the show. I don't watch the show I use to. I think Ann Curry should get an evening news position because she would make a great news anchor and get rid of some of these male news anchors. Also I think they need to get rid of Matt and Roker they are the reason the ratings suck.

I think you are all confused. I have watched the today show for about 15 years, and while Ann is not the worst (willard??), she was certainly not the best. I think she is a great reporter on serious topics; her interaction in Iran to get the hostages freed was quite good. But as a morning show host, she was pretty blah. And some of the questions that came out of her mouth...

Have you ever began to watch the Today Show just to find out that Ann was off on vacation or reporting elsewhere, leading you to wait to watch the show until Ann would be back on the show in the next few days? That was how Ann affected my viewing. She was and still is a great journalist, but to gain the viewership of many folks out there, is a task itself; she grabbed my attention to her sincerity, class, intelligence- and like many fans dedicated to a musical artist through their years, so too am I too Ann Curry. Shame on NBC. You've expanded to 3 hours in 2000 and then 4 hours in 2007. Might as well as extend the Today Show to an 8 hour shift. Was the situation of their poor ratings not analyzed well? No more Today Show for me.

I think NBC should be ashamed of itself – business or not. Ann is not the blame for the fall in viewer attendance...the produces are. Today has too many guests and does not adequately allow sufficient time – often cutting people or segments off. It is distracting to say the least. If NBC wants to elminate anyone – why not Matt and/or Al – neither of whom "make the show." Regarding Hoda and Kathi Lee, total waste of time. I've switched to GMA and am really enjoying it. I hope GMA hires Ann. As to Ann's severance, I hope she received the $30M (as part of the original contract) and another $10M for being made the scapegoat. She signed a $10M a year contract for three years. She is owed the $30M. She held up her end of the bargain. NBC, do the same!

You said it exactly. Ann was (is) the best interviewer of the group and is not to blame for the lack of ratings. Besides what you attributed it to I would add all the younger music groups. I could take it on Fridays but everyday...not. I'd rather have news than entertainment.

I thought Ann grounded the Today Show. My feeling was that the show was losing viewers because it wasn't as relevant, especially during an election year. There are so many issues that affect everyone. Yes, I want to be cheered up when I get ready for work, but I also want some more "hard" news and it did seem the show had more puff pieces than GMA. And GMA has long-time journalists as anchors and guests to discuss and comment on the "hard news". I think Ann could have been that person but NBC wanted her to be another fluff anchor.
I think the work that Ann is going on to do will be much more exciting than the Today Show. She will always be a role model for Asian Americans, no matter what she is doing. I look forward to seeing her in her new career but I will really miss her in the morning and may even switch to GMA.

This is another case of 30 something incompetent TV Managers" making knee jerk decisions without truly having the experience and depth to understand their business. I trusted her and believed I was seeing who she was - likely because for so many years I felt I can come to know what to expect from her and respect it. The decision to make Savannah Guthrie the new co-anchor will, I believe, result in a further reduction in viewers. Guthrie is a very intelligent woman but also lacks the personality to offset the rather dull Matt Lauer. In other words they're too much alike. I thought Jay Leno was joking about the N.B.C. executives not knowing what their doing now i believe him, they don't. They should have brought in someone from the outside to replace Curry or better yet Matt Lauer.

Like so many others I will miss Ann on the today show format; I do work every day–but I got to watch while getting ready in AM and on days off–Ann was a true journalist and role model for millions of women and girls. in our culture, it is not unusual to feel" attached "to persons who become a familiar presence on TV–Ann was always an intelligent representative of my point of view during her interviews. I cannot Identify with Matt–who is superficial and long past his expiration date–he just takes the money and runs, no ethics–no charitable involvement no giving back! Savannah Guthrie is a lawyer? Where– From correspondence school?? She presents herself like a" stick" with an airhead–nobody's idea of a role model. Guess i'll be checking out other stations also–NBC is behind the times of intelligent viewers.

I agree.... Ann is a classy lady with a huge heart! She will be missed, and I too will be changing the channel now. Matt seems to have gotten "too big for his britches" and appears to have quite an ego. I just can't believe the way this was handled, or the lack thereof, and yet they keep the "gab" segment going for the last hr everyday... seriously?!?!?! I've been growing more and more irritated with their segments and how they are always rushing through them, well, this has made my decision for me! NBC needs to get their priorities in order! Keep your chin up, Ann, better things are in store for you ~ Thank you for all the lives you have touched over the years!

I am sorry to see Ann go. I think it is a big big mistake. Maybe NBC should change out Matt since he seems to be the only constant . The women keep getting changed out and ratings still don't go up. Obviously nothing can make him look good enough in his existing role. NBC just keep getting rid of the wrong people. I wish Ann the best and hopefully I will catch her segments. I will spend my morning getting ready for work watching Good Morning America.

So Ann Curry is out because she doesn't have the charisma of Katie, Meredith, or Sarah Palin (Hello Idiots!) but Savannah whatshername does? I watched today to see what she was about but will be watching GMA or CBS with Charlie Rose from now on. She was incrediblly bland and don't see that she would be a good interviewer. Please let us have the improved ratings as soon as possible! I'm betting they will be lower than ever. Bad decision NBC.

I guess to each is own but, I am not a fan of Savannah - she's too bubbly and sort of annoying. However, I think they needed to make a change - as it was awkward between Matt and Ann. Matt is better with interviews - but, I do appreciate Ann and how professional she has been through out the years. It's sad but, it always boils down to ratings...

Sorry to see Ann go. I am really shocked that she will be leaving. What is NBC doing? Does anyone else think Matt is gone a lot...seems whenever I tune in he is not there. A great contract he has! And Ann gets demoted. Also, someone earlier commented on Kathy Lee. I do enjoy her and she can be very funny. It's Hoda that I am not fond of. She's not funny, and I always get the feeling a cat fight is simmering just under the surface between those two. I'm guessing a male would be a better counterpart for Kathy. She had better rapport with Regis. Oh, and Al Roker MUST STAY.

Like so many others, I have been a fan of Ann Curry for many years. I have enjoyed her not only as a serious journalist, but as an exceptionally open and easy to relate to television personality! She has touched my heart with her beautiful and personal stories about everything from her own family (remember the story of her mother and father?....how beautiful) to her coverage of SERIOUS international issues...the Iran hikers (Ahmadinejad chose HER to reveal that they would soon be released....why? because she is a serious journalist that people LISTEN TO!) and as she mentioned in her pathetically self serving (of NBC) farewell, the fact that she got the freakin Dalai Lama to do a live interview....umm HELLO NBC!!!??? Good for you Ann for pointing that out! Your farewell really solidified your stance as a true CLASS ACT! You brought a serious face to an increasingly ridiculous morning talk show platform that appears to be spending more time focussed on what they will be dressing Matt and Al in come Halloween than relating to the people who buy the products advertised on Today every morning! Seriously, aside from the absurd amount of money NBC has recently handed over to Matt, I wonder what the viewers would think of the cash spent on these petty frivolities while the average viewer struggles to make ends meet! I for one will never again watch TODAY. Ann was "my girl"!! And I say that not in a condescending way, but that after all of these years of "getting to know her", she was like one of my closest girlfriends! I could relate to her on a daily basis as well as feel engaged and worry about her when she was out in the field doing what no other member of "that show" was doing....REAL JOURNALISM!! I am offended by NBC's handling of this entire affair, but not surprised. This may be the best thing to happen to Ann Curry....she can get back to working with her true peers and continuing to make a difference. Leave the soft ball stories to Matt who, after all of these years and so many co-anchors has proved once and for all that his only loyalty is to himself. What a sad and lonely end.

NBC should be flogged for their incredible insensitivity in the way they handled Ann's exit. How pathetic. There is a reason I selsom watch anything on NBC – and I think this became crystallized with the way Ann left. Did she not get the ball over the finish line? But given the package Ann was given says a lot. Maybe she didn't fit in with Matt, but the powers that be recognize a hard news reporter when they see one. The only reason GMA had such high ratings is that Robin was going through a health crisis and got over that then it has happened again. People watch not just for the news but because you listen in the morning as if you are in the conversation with friends without having to say anything just continue doing what you are doing to get ready for the day. It's a relationship without effort, without critics, with your guard down, and acceptance, what better friendship is there? 🙂 You become part of the family. I can’t say I was ever an Ann Curry fan but nationally exposing a weak point in her life like this is terrible. I’m excited for all this to blow over so we can all get back to just watching the news. It’s funny how we can all develop such a strong relationship with these people. I know since I’ve started my job at Dish I have certainly fallen into a morning routine that involves my newscasters. I am more of a Good Morning America fan myself, which spurs some controversy in my household since my husband loves Today. Luckily, our Hopper whole home DVR allows us record and watch up to three things so he can watch NBC while I’m upstairs watching ABC. Even though I’m not the biggest Today show supporter, I still wish Ann the best of luck and I’m sure she will bounce back just fine.

Why did you say "I'm sorry", Ann? Why did you think you didn't cross the finish line? You did. In the normal workplace, your involuntary departure is considered Wrongful Termination! It seems the only reason you were ousted by the network, wasn't On-Air style or chemistry, it appears that you just weren't white enough, now seeing Savannah next to Matt. It would appear then, the visual was the network's reason, as you did your job perfectly! And I loved watching you on the show, as did we all! Maybe – if you bleached your skin, and died your hair, they would have kept you on. It would seem to suggest. Shame on them! And any workplace who does that to a person, and makes them cry on their job because they booted them out – without sound reason or justified cause – should be sued!

I really don't want to agree with the race factor, but the history of anchors at NBC shows that they never really have colored anchors. Forget about Al, he is a cute weather man who is not the main host. The closest thing is Hoda and Katie Lee who are Latinas. While I agree Ann Curry didnt have chemistry with Matt Lauer, didn't NBC already knew while Ann and Matt have been working together for 14 years? NBC better have paid Ann Curry a lot of money and Matt Lauer should work his magic soon.

CBS did the same thing about 2 yrs ago. They pushed out the entire morning crew, including Harry Smith, Dave Price and Maggie Rodriguez. They replaced them all with the group that does Saturday's news. I was livid. I believe too that it is not the co-anchors, it's the programming and the top execs. I watch the Weather Channel now, they do a news segment and few special interest bits that are actually news worthy. I don't understand why this mentality that to make change you need to give the boot to the people the viewers are tuning in to see. Matt Lauer is a sell out hack. I loved Ann Curry on the Today Show and sad that she has gone. She was the caring one, and brought the most humanistic touch to the show. Unfortunately, the Today Show programming over the years is losing its appeal with the long time viewers, like me, and instead of fixing the programming, they "fix" the cast. Get a clue NBC, it's not the people, it's the programming. I don't like Dateline, yet you force me to watch it in the 2nd segment (which I don't). The best slot is 8:00-8:30. Too much politics in the first segment, too much uninteresting fill in the 9-10 slot. Savannah might be sweet, but she has no personality. No wonder Matt Lauer prefers her.

A reflection of the time – loyalty and doing a great job is no longer valued in America. NBC is already producing crap TV in the evenings. Surprised they didn't pick Sarah Palin ... remember her co-hosting stunt? Wonder why no Executive heads rolled over that decision.

In both cases, Matt could have taken a stand and instead rolled over and took it. Done with them all.

"A reflection of the time – loyalty and doing a great job is no longer valued in America" - well said. I have watched the Today Show for many years and am appalled at the way NBC has treated a longstanding employee who was a terrific news reporter. I was a bit surprised when they moved her to cohost as I thought news was her strength. She had subbed as cohost so often so the execs surely knew what to expect - a reporter; not a giggly, flirty cohost a la Katie or Meredith. I felt sooo bad for her today - clearly she gave the job her heart and soul. All the best to you, Ms. Curry. I have a lot of respect for you - and zero for your network. It's not hard for me to say that Ann Curry really has no place in live television, and I've sent several emails to CNN over the years to express it. Katie Couric has the ability to "think on her feet" in an interview–not Ann. Ann simply deson't have the skills. She routinely fumbled through interviews, mostly the live ones.

Am I an Ann "hater?" Definitely not. She's has good qualities. It's just that she rose to the level of her incompetence. I think she can do well on well-edited scripted pieces and come across much more credible. But I'm so glad that CNN has realized that, just because someone wants a particular job, that doesn't mean they're necessarily good at it...

It is truly a shame that NBC did such a poor job with Ann's exit. She really did not deserve it. She is an amazing journalist and if this was not the best position for her she still deserves a lot of respect for the work she does, It would have been a much better choice to get rid of Hoda and Kathie Lee. I quite frankly find them very annoying.

Love Hoda but still cannot stand Kathy Lee. Who's idea was it for them to be "drinking on the job"???? NBC needs taste testers in the morning hours?????? I only watch the show to see Hoda – the drinking part sure brings back very bad memories for me Kathy Lee made an ass out of herself (again) – laughing at the story of the man who was threatened due to farting. I'm sooooo glad the man doing the threatening (with a gun) was arrested.

I agree with so many of the comments. NBC and the Today show just lost my viewership BECAUSE of the way Ann Curry has been treated. Corporate greed and "numbers, numbers, numbers." Ann was used as a scapegoat and that is so unfair and as far as I'm concerned, immoral and unethical. The Today show was the first show I turned on at 7a.m., PST, and now, I will no longer tune in. NBC, you really messed up and I hope you lose millions of viewers.

I completely agree – this was very cruel and unfair as well as embarrassing for Ann Curey. I'm definitely one viewer NBC has lost. I also only watch the news due to Chuck and Bernie. This has been a "click" for many, many years. They need to get rid of the one newscaster who I originally thought was pregnant when she joined but soon realized she is way, way overweight and looks terrible on camera – the other – "bug eye", no personality sportscaster who fills in for Bernie. She looks like a football player. I switch channels when these two are on.

Long time Today Show watcher but have been switching to other early morning shows since the Today Show has move away from being more of a news program to an entertainment program. All the self-promotion of the network's "sister station" TV shows have found me switching channels more frequently. CBS has more news on its new show with Charlie Rose. I like the on air staff of the Today Show...but the material they've been given to work with has been the problem for me. One more segment with the Khardashians or one of the Housewives of Wherever and I find myself switching channels. Ann was good with hard nes and always willing to step up to a challenge. I think the problem's bigger than Ann...it's with the decision-makers on the stories.

Can't believe there are so many comments on this story. Why does anyone other than Ms. Curry and her family care about this issue? Are our lives really so empty that we have a stake in who hosts a TV show? I'm 45 and I've NEVER watched this show for more than a few minutes. Who has time? What do the rest of you do to be able to watch 4 hours of television on a work-day morning? And if you HAVE that kind of time, why are you wasting it watching tv?

Ann is totally the scapegoat here, and what a lousy way to treat her. Ann has twice posed for photos with my two kids, six years ago and just last month. It was very cool seeing them grow and Ann being the same. Matt was nowhere to be seen. He's arrogant and a phony. There are plenty of other morning news shows. I'm done with The Today Show after their mistreatment of Ann, and I hope their decline continues. They did the same thing to Deborah Norville years ago.

Sure hope NBC reviews all these comments and uses the marketing tool of LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS if they really want the ratings to go up. I watch the TODAY show most mornings for news and like when Al Roker says things that sometimes gives me a belly laugh but recently he doesn't appear to have that spunk he use to–is he unhappy too? Based on the comments, appears NBC didn't consider surveying the CUSTOMER before they made the decision to take Ann off the couch. By the way, when the Kathie Lee and Hoda segment comes on off goes the TV.

Ann was the only one on that show that knew how to be a professional reporter she stepped off the couch and took risks and got results, it is for sure Matt would not want to mess his hair up . Smart, classy and compasionate but perhaps just not the best fit as a co-anchor. She isn't a fluff person and that is definately a position that requires some fluff. Still, NBC regardless of how much you are paying her or what other opportunites you are offering her you should be ashamed of how you handled her departure. Desipte all the rumours you let leak she still handled this week grace. I'm with the rest you lost me as a viewer, not because you replaced Ann but the horrible, classless tabloid way you did it!

Intelligent people who want to hear about important things in the world can no longer depend on the Today Show to tell them about it. I used to tune in every morning. Now I check in for the first 5 minutes to see what's happening and switch to MSNBC. I'm in my 50's and understand I'm no longer part of the consuming demographic that is Today's target audience so I've had to say good bye to a show which was part of my routine since I was a kid. Ann Curry on the same program as Hoda and Kathy Lee? What a waste! She has so much more to offer viewers. I look forward to the wonderful work she has ahead of her. I think the decision to leave Today was a good one for Ann; however, NBC acted egregiously in the way the story was handled, hanging her out to dry in the media for a week without coming to her aid/defense. Love Ann...very compassionate and yet a consummate professional; if she goes we go. Their are few that possess her unique ability to fit into any situation: from co-host of the Today Show, to anchoring the Nightly News, and yes, sorry to tell you Brian, if given the choice between you or Ann, in black she has you beat by a mile and Lester beat by two. I have been watching the Today Show for over twenty five years and I've have had to endure Meredith Vieira, awkward interviews with a woman who got her face bitten off by a chimp, the Duggar family, Prince William, the Olympics, a seeming obsession with gas prices, people who lose limbs and a cornucopia of other nonesense and non-newsworthy human interest stories. Meanwhile, one of the most important issues facing every man, woman and child goes uncovered. If anyone is wondering why viewership is waning, stop one on the bus tour might be the stories being covered. As for you, Ann, I sincerely hope your next employer values you and gives you the respect you've earned and deserve, as opposed to throwing you under the bus.

I'm amazed all the people here thought she was sincere and genuine. She had the most fake interviewing style I have ever seen. Her fake emotions and concern was appalling. She would switch to her "soft voice" when doing one of her weepy interviews. The fact that people here didn't see it as a charade is very telling.

This job was NOT a good fit for Ann no matter what anyone thinks. She was stiff, uncomfortable, "said the right things", asked the right questions, but one got the feeling her heart wasn't in it. Even if it WAS, it didnt come across the screen.
Ann does great spotlight news shows and interviewing. I dont think she wanted to travel so much but that is where she blossoms.

To say that Ann was the only reason for the slip in the ratings would be stupid, BUT, you do not get the best of what Ann Curry can deliver when she's sitting next to Matt on the Today show. She is a journalist, not a personality and to those who think she's a good interviewer, think again. On so many occasions it has appeared as if she's had a brain fart asking, asking questions to someone who just went through something terrible, "did it hurt?". Not sure who's going to fill Ann's chair, but I like Natalie Morales a lot more than Savannah Guthrie. She's more personable and comes off as very genuine.

The little "Today's Professionals" thing they do is really dumb in my opinion, and I cringe every time it comes on. And the third hour of the show with Kathy Lee and Hoda is a joke. NBC should be ashamed of how they handled the whole situation. Rumor was, they tried to get Meridith back – wow! What a mistake! Meredith was always so dumb on the show, and Matt was always making jokes at the expense of her lack of intelligence.

They report the news as they as it should be done-serious, report enttainment news as that too should be done – with fluff, and all the other subjects of interest to the people who watch exactly as each one should be. When it signs off I feel like I have the important information I need, the weather reports that I depend on, and the useless celebrity information that makes me laugh. I have watched the Today Show for years and always thought Ann Curry would not be a good choice for the anchor position. It isn't because I don't like her personally; she just doesn't have the "Umph" required for that particular role. She's a great reporter and comes across as genuine. However, in my humble opinion, it takes a certain type of personality and charisma to take on such an important role & unfortunately Ann doesn't have it. Sorry Ann, nothing personal. Katie Couric is absolutely irreplaceable and I admit once she left, I stopped watching for a while. I really didn't care for Meredith Viera either. I started watching faithfully again once Ann replaced Meredith and still did not feel she was the right person for the job. As far as Matt Lauer goes, I have no issue wth him and have always liked and appreciated his talents and I believe he adds a unique quality to the show. As for replacing Ann, I know Savannah Guthrie is in the lead but I don't feel she's the right fit either. I think the role should be given to Natalie Morales (not only is she beautiful but she's got the charisma and reporting talent needed). Either Natalie or BEG & PLEAD with Katie Couric to come back.

Apparently, its fine for men to age gracefully in front of the camera but only cookie cutter cuties can stay on in the female gender. (I'd say beware, Dr. Snyderman, but apparently Americans like a little aging grace in their doctors.) Ann would be good on CBS Morning Show. I started watching that because there is more news and less fluff - GMA was turning into a junior high classroom with Lara, Sam and what's the other guy's name, Josh? Everything got dumbed-down and was geared more toward the People of Walmart/National Enquirer demographic. And the off-set laughter became too annoying. Now Today does it too, which is why I switched mainly to CBS. Charlie Rose and Gayle King are so classy and have charm, which is why CBS should bring Ann Curry on. They need to get rid of the dark-haired lady. She has no charm. Zero personality.

She went out with such class and dignity - not that I would expect anything less. Interesting that all she got was a few minutes of talk; no long, good-bye tribute like they gave Meredith Viera [sp?] who was there a far shorter time. Sad.

NBC should be ashamed who they handled the sitution with Ann, it was HIGHLY UNPROFESSIONAL. They are repeating the same mistakes of the past, pushing shows and people out take for instance with Conan & Jay Lenon deal, Debra Norville and countless others. I smell a lawsuit coming soon that will only teach the company a much deserved lesson. Ann will bounce back, she is strong and a wonderful journalist, who has the support of her fans around the global. Ann: best wishes to you always!!!!!! I am now a former NBC watcher for sure!

I think cnn.com's headline is misleading - "steps down" implies it was voluntary. As a long-time Today Show employee, the execs sure knew what they were getting when the moved her to the host position. To give her only a year, then treat her so shabbilly does not speak well of the network or the TodayShow. Rather than pinning low ratings on her, I think they need to look to their programming which [in my opinion[ has become shallower and geared more and more to pop culture coverage. They undoubtedly will fill her shoes with someone flirtier, younger, shallower. Meanwhile, viewers are abandoning ship.

Booting Ann form Today is like the Coca Cola company bringing out New Coke, JCPenney getting rid of coupons or just about any user-affected changes Facebook does. I wonder where Donny Deutsch stands on this?

Ann has such professionalism, class and is so personable. I like Savannah and Natalie, but Ann has a warmth that just cannot be duplicated. I like Matt Lauer and the others but Kathie Lee has got to go. I used to have a Season Pass on my TiVO for Today and would FFW through it when I got home from work but it also recorded 1-2 hours of Kathie Lee so I just manually record the show and have it cut off when Hoda and Kathie Lee come on. Hoda is not too bad but the only person I can think of that would watch Kathie Lee is someone that is being held prisoner and chained down with the TV set to NBC all day long.

I totally agree with Mari, Ann Curry is the epitome of class and professionalism. Whenever she delivered a story, I felt the pain she was feeling, or felt the happiness in her heart. Her eyes told the story – they are amazing! She had a way of delivering a story to you which had a very personal experience. Natalie and Savannah are passable, but they need "seasoning" – something that takes experience and maturity. Savannah is excellent as a legal expert, but is awkward on the Today show. Is this what NBC wants? The show is becoming too plastic and after many years, I will be switching channels. Too bad. Please don't take Al or Matt off, that would be like adding salt to a wound. And talking about plastic, the Hoda and Kathie Lee show needs to go. As soon as I hear the theme music come on, I run for my remote and switch to something else, or turn the tv off. Come on NBC, get real and give us some down to earth people.

I am encouraged to see posts here from people appreciating class, professionalism and compassion. Too few people value such things. I am further encouraged that others don't like a mere 30 seconds of news and the "hour of celebrity crap." "News" on GMA is Rielle Hunter. Please. I like CBS in the morning; no screaming no celebrity "hot/cold" tickers. My mind and mood is much calmer when I have the TV on in the background as I'm getting ready for work.

NBC did the right thing. Ann was never right for the role. Her interviews were always cringe worthy, especially when she got flustered with celebrities. I often thought, does she not review her own work and see how bad it is and try to improve?Obviously not and now she is paying the price. If you don't have IT, then you just don't have IT and that's what the viewing public deserves if the anchors get paid millions to do that job. I've watched Savannah handle herself so well in a sort period of time. Her background as a lawyer always bodes well in her interviews which are handled with intelligence and polish. And last but not least, Ann always seemed to be out of step in the wit and sarcasm department. While all the others were laughing at the joke, she just seemed to throw a wet blanket over it. Savannah has IT and the chemistry with Matt is obvious. This is a good day for NBC and the viewing public.

I left Today show a long time ago! Matt is dry and and Anne was not a good interviewer! Simple! Did anyone see how Mike Tyson called her out when he did his interview a few weeks ago? She said that it was his first time on the the Today show and he said No, I have been here before. After all he was was the heavy weight champ of the world at one point. She looked like she was going to cry! And quickly blamed it on the writters and keep looking down at her notes. She was not able to come back from that! He was hard to watch! That is when I knew she was gone!

Ann Curry can best be described as a professional, talented, intelligent journalist who is empathetic, classy, sincere, and an overall good role model for all young women. Given this description of Ann, she simply did not fit well on the boring TODAY morning show. She will be a better fit in an evening program where her experience and talents will shine. Good Luck to Ann and I look forward to seeing her off the couch in an energetic new program. Ann, embrace your new role with confidence and know that you have many supporters.

I love Ann! But I have to agree that hosting was not her strong suit. She is a wonderful journalist and is a woman of class a grace. Rare to see on television! Best of luck to you Ann. I agree with everyone that the mighty NBC has fallen, and will lose viewers over this move. I loved her behind the news desk! The Today show needs a TOTAL overhaul. Ann is not the sum total of the problems with this show.

I stopped watching Today after Bush's last election. I've never seen a "news" show with anchors as blatantly biased as Lauer & Roker were. I honestly thought they were going to get up and dance around the couch. If Ann showed any bias to Democrats, I'd say it's only fair.

Ann should've seen the writing on the wall when she didn't get the top spot after Katie Couric left. I was furious when she was passed by for that spot – Joan – you share my thoughts. NBC should have given Ann the top spot and brought in some spunky eye candy to take Ann's place. It's just absurd – I think it's the top brass at NBC that needs replacing. Ann Curry – you have more grace and intelligence in your little toe than most people have in their whole body. It would've been a stupid move because of the money but I would've given NBC the finger.

Even tho I don't really like that panel of people on there. But, without Ann Curry, the TODAY show will be stupid. And What's with having those 3 idiots on there as the Professionals? Star, Donnie and Dr. Nancy? What do they know? they just sit and jabber and it's so hard to even hear the conversation. And then when NBC has people like Rosie O'Donnell or Kate Gossling on there? I cannot stand it.

This is sad news. I had the privilege to hear Ann Curry deliver a commencement address to my nephew’s college graduating class a few years ago. Ms. Curry had everyone hanging on every word as she spoke. It was a message of having no fear, having hope, pursuing your dreams and having heart. While I liked and respected Ann Curry as a reporter and co-host prior to hearing her – but it was after listening to her deliver that heartfelt commencement address that my respect for her and what she has accomplished grew exponentially. She's always done a great job and been a class act, which is certainly rare for someone in her business. No one will ever convince me that subtle racism in terms of both the viewing audience and the NBC management wasn't a contributory factor in this decision. I personally choked up watching the video. I really am shocked the way NBC handled Ann's departure. The gutless individuals who were behind this decision should have personally sat on the couch with her to make this announcement. This is no different than getting demoted or fired from your job, and standing in front of all the company employees to announce it – but on a much larger stage to do it upon. Very poor taste and lacking in integrity by NBC. The execs gave Couric a huge send off with 2 days of "going down memory lane" via videos, Hollywood messages, etc. Ann is plunked down on the couch and forced to make this announcement on her own with a pat on the back from Matt and that's it. Not that I expected a Couric like farewell "party". Ann was a straight shooting journalist and may not have appealed to all, however no person deserves this humiliation. Just wait and see the huge deal they make out of whomever they replace Ann with on the couch. Days of "wait for it" teasers, and the like. I have been an avid NBC News (on all fronts) for decades, however I cannot support the network any longer.Truly a sad day in journalism when they start behaving like politicians. That day has come. Sad. Best of luck to you Ann..you deserve so much more.

If you want to talk principles then please make sure that you are there when that factory worker in Kentucky , who makes $15 per hour loses his job that he needs to support his family. Make sure that you are blogging and talking priciples when that laid off factory worker can no longer feed his family.Ok Gail? Many who do work a traditional day shift job still have time to catch at least the first hour of the Today Show before they leave for work. Also, the Today Show is not “supposed” to be an entertainment show. It is a news show. Unfortunately, it has turned into more entertainment and fluff reporting than actual news. This, in my opinion, is why the ratings have dropped. NBC handled the demotion of Ann Curry in the most horrible way. But NBC has proven that it isn't what it once was, in so many ways. The debacle with Conan (love him or hate him, they way they handled it was just incompetent), their increased political partisanship (to the point of intentionally doctoring tapes and videos in misleading ways), and their poor choice of TV shows (remember the iconic shows they once had?), shows this is a network that is floundering. Too bad. For many of us, what was once our primary network has dropped below many of the cable channels.

Well said. Getting the ball over the finish line usually requires a team effort. Ann, you were the reason I continued to watch the Today Show, but no longer. Meredith, Matt, Al and Natalie all put me back to sleep; your work ethic keep me awake because I expected to see some real "news." The absence of Savannah on the couch spoke volumes. Look out Savannah. NBC has already set your image with this former viewer. I look forward to seeing Ann in her new role, and Savannah with Brian as a legal analyst – not an entertainer on early morning TV. Best wishes to Ann

Though I'm not a huge fan of Ann Curry, I will say that she was probably the only real journalist on that ridiculous, I'll call it, 'morning show'. She obviously doesn't fit in because she's a serious journalist not some daytime reality host. And you don't need 4 frickn people on a couch to give the news. Do they even DO the news? 'Cause it just looks like a bunch of fanfare and bllsht when I tune in. NBC has got like 4 hours of bllsht in the morning masquerading as a news show. Ann don't fret. You'll move on to something that's worth of your skills. Joining The Today Show was like running away to join the circus. Now, back to reality. Best of luck.

She's a better journalist than anyone on that show in recent memory. She's not great with live interviews, but overall she's in a different class than Laurer, Viera (who I really liked), and by far, Couric (Couric was strictly there for ratings – she is a TERRIBLE journalist and interviewer). Curry is just too serious and classy for Today, which is news-lite. Good luck to her on her new endeavor.

You can dislike Couric as a personality, but saying she was a terrible journalist is laughable. She is one of the few reporters that, one on one, would challenge people with abrupt, upfront, honest questions – then question them on their answers. Her interviews with presidential candidates were classics. Shortly prior to her departure the show started collapsing, and I think she saw that it was going towards less of an informative news show, to a day time, celebrity based piece of garbage. Viera is among the worst ever.

I am sorry to see Ann leave the Today show, not because she was leaving, but how it was manipulated. To put the blame of lower ratings on Ann was wrong!!! I have been a faithful viewer of the Today show since the days of Dave Garroway and J. Fred Muggs. I have enjoyed the news reporting, and certainly the banter between the people on the couch. I felt that the show lost something when NBC allowed Katie Couric to walk away. I had grown fond of the way the female co-hosts would ask very deep questions. Among the best was Barbara Walters and Jane Pauly. They weren't afraid to ask the questions the person watching at home wanted to ask. When the show went to 3 hours, they lost me in the 3rd hour. The show lost it's edge, it became entertainment and not news. I am sorry to see Ann leave, but hopefully her new job will fit her expert skills better. Ann, good luck!!

This seems eeriely similar to what was done to Conan – NBC blamed the Tonight Show's low ratings on him even though the Leno show was apparently a crappy lead in. Maybe this is thier M.O. when they want to make a change without actually improving the wuality of the programming.

Then again, maybe they don't want Today to have any gravitas, and for it not be more the news variety show that it has always been rather than actual "news". Maybe Ann wasn't a good fit because she was an actual journalist and not a fluff anchor. Maybe we'll see her at Nightly News someday.

By all accounts, Ann was the friendliest, most gifted, and nicest people he has ever worked with. It was good to hear this from him. Not all news reporters have egos, and Ann always seemed to be everyone's friend. I believe everything she said on her final show was 100% genuine. I never met her, but I liked the way she carried herself. I do not watch the show anymore, but I hope Ann enjoys her new role and lands on her feet. No one should be surprised. Yes, Ann comes off as genuine, kind, likable person but being a live anchor simply was not her forte, full stop. Her live interview questions were often rambling and unclear making it difficult for interviewees to answer. She consistently interrupted interviewees too early or at the wrong moment in an effort to come off as a hard hitting journalist. It was awkward and painful to watch her live interviews. This isn't to say she doesn't have talent and continued value at NBC. She was/is great at the news and taped interviews/segments. For those who think dropping Ann is a mistake need to remember that The Today Show is a product… a profit/revenue center for NBC, it's not personal. Ratings were dropping, big time. Like any product, if yours sales drop dramatically you have to stop the bleeding and fix the problem. I wish Ann the very best and look forward to watching her excel in her new role.

News reporters "making" news shows the sad state of reporting. We no longer have information reports, we have news-makers exercising their free speech. I remember when we could get news. Now we get sales pitches for revenue enhancement opportunities thus further enabling the top 5%. The internet is certainly a helpful tool in realizing the truth.

Alright, let's be for real here. Ann was good at what she did before taking on the co-host seat after Meredith. I cringed at times when she did solo interviews with people cause she wasn't quick enough, tough enough and didn't ask great questions through the interviews. The flow and her reactions/interactions were weird and different than the others. When doing something live it's different than doing something that is recorded and expected (scripted/prepared). You have to be spontaneous, on spot, be a good ad libber, and quick to the gun and ask the questions that is on everyone's minds. Sometimes she staggered and tripped through getting words out and has a monotone quality about her, that was kind of... boring. The others had, hate to say it, personality. I think this was part of the decision to not keep her. Yes, she is a great person, great journalist, one to be admired, but her soft-spoken, reserved, emotional ways wasn't a right fit for this job.

This networks problems are not because of her. We do not watch this broadcast to hear about Kate Middleton's fashion choices before Korea's threats to fire missles. NBC are you kidding me. This is one more reason you are losing ratings. Ann Curry was the ONLY reason I watched the Today show. I will be watching ABC going forward. Ann Curry was/is awesome. Remember the smart idea to retire Jay Leno for Conan? This is the same poor decision making. Somebody at NBC needs to be fired other than Ann Curry. Stay tuned.. The Today show will lose more ratings. The Today show is full of mindless chatter, not good information or news. Good luck Ann, we love you. You are a top notch reporter and a class act woman.

Ann went out of her way to help me get some autographs that I plan to auction off for Make-a-wish. She had genuine warmth towards her audience. She made each person feel important that she met. That is a rare quality in a person. Ann is intelligent, graceful, and kind. She was a breath of fresh air for Today show. In fact, I only started to watch Today regularly when she became a regular co-host. I wonder how low the ratings will get once Ann leaves. It is a shame, replace solid talent to dumb down to society. Ann you were too good-something better on your horizen-somewhere where you'll be appreciated. Ann where ever you go...so will I. Adios Today, Good Morning America!!

I have watched the Today show for over 40 years and have always enjoyed most who anchored it with few exceptions. Ann Curry is one of my favorites and I agree that she brought a very fare reporting style to her work. I always felt she would get the truth out of an interview. I loved her sincerity with her television family as well as her viewers. Hopefully she will enjoy her new position and that NBC will provide her with safe places to go. Shame on whoever it was who let her leave, what a big mistake.

Not a bad NBC host. Not a bad salary either. Those NBC salaries $10mil, $20mil, $31mil are nice. NBC has a vow to hire 1000 vets. Let's do some math. Cut a $20mil host and hire 400 vets at $50k. Productivity in action.

I always loved Ann Curry previously as the news desk anchor and this year as cohost. She's smart, funny and sensitive. I think that she's really too good to be just a talking head like Matt Lauer. She is best when she's reporting real stories, going into war zones and disaster areas and showing the viewers the truth. I don't think her talent shines doing the puff celebrity pieces that Today features every morning. Matt Lauer has become such an egomaniac that it's hard to watch him any more. Today used to be my every morning go to for the news/weather, etc. before I left for work each day. After this fiasco and their treating Ann so shabbily, I think I may be turning the channel as well. I really wish Ann Curry the best in whatever she does and I'm sure she'll continue to be a great reporter. As for the NBC execs and Matt Lauer, Karma will balance the scales.

Ann Curry is the most professional newsperson you have ever had on the show and to kick her to the curb as you have done is inexcusable! She is the gutsiest lady I have ever had the honor of watching. The Today show should knock off all the fluff crap and get back to being a morning news show. Perhaps you should be looking to replace whoever decided the change the format from news to what the celebrities are up to and get back to what normal people are interested in. I am stunned that NBC/Today has made another bonehead decision by letting Curry go. Natalie Morales is a beauty pageant queen and couldn't hold her own with an important news-maker if she tried. It would be an utter embarrassment. I trust they will limit her to cooking segments and fashion. Whereas, Ann Curry could empathize with news-makers, make them comfortable enough to spout things they probably weren't even intending to share. That's it for me with Today. I will go to CBS, and spend my mornings with Charlie Rose. Shame, shame, shame on the people at NBC who made the decision to yank Curry as a regular on Today. Sheer idiocy.

She's probably been courting those back rooms guys (producers)the whole time, convincing them of how smart she is while down playing Ann. but she doesn't have the IT factor. Matt is so in love with himself, Al tries too hard to be funny and the rest just follow. The show is becoming quite shallow. The stories, big or small, are just to showcase the anchors. Ann brought substance and humanism. Sad, sad day for the viewers. The three specialists are the 3 Stooges. Get them off. They are totally ridiculous. Agreed. Ann grounded the rest of the cast and gave them class. Matt is so condescending it's pathetic. But more importantly the show itself has zero focus. One day it's a show about frugality and saving money by sewing your own clothes and the next day it's a show about ultra expensive ridiculous junk. One day it's about losing weight and counting calories to be healthy and stay healthy and the next it's ridiculously uber junk food recipes. Make up your mind already. Do you want to be a serious show or not? And yes, I will be one of the very, very many for whom this is the tipping point and will not be watching the show tomorrow, or after that at all.

It's pretty easy to due all the things she said she accomplished with a full production /medical staff traveling with you. All she had to do is show up. Obviously, she couldn't "Cut the mustard".

Too bad. Sh's a good looking head. Matt Lauer is a hack – they should fire his bad self.

Ann Curry is a class act. She will be greatly missed. NBC should be ashamed of the way they have treated her. I predict that The Today Show will lose many viewers as a result of this move - and plenty of ad revenue as well. NBC will learn the error of its ways too late. At least she will still be doing the type of reporting she loves to do. She is a true professional.

Agree – they should be ashamed. I do think she's better at hard news not this junk that they put on every morning. They've lost marketshare because they air nothing but fluff. And to see "Dr. Nancy" do the stuff they have her doing now - it's just pathetic. They need to look a little higher up in that pecking order for the real ball-dropper. Won't be watching this program any longer – this was the last straw. I'll miss you Al!
