The 'Seven Dwarves' get a new look

In case the two recent Snow White movies and "Once Upon a Time" weren't enough for you, Snow White is even having a moment on children's television.

The recently launched Disney Junior channel announced on Tuesday that they've started production on "The 7D," a reboot of Snow White's "Seven Dwarves."

Designed by Noah Z. Jones of the popular Disney series "Fish Hooks," "The 7D" look quite different from how we're used to seeing them.

"Our goal for Disney Junior is to engage kids with stories and characters that represent the very best of Disney storytelling," said Disney Junior Senior Vice President Nancy Kanter in a release.

"With 'The 7D,' we look to continue Walt Disney's legacy of reinterpreting classic folk and fairy tales in ways that delight new audiences. We're excited to re-imagine these familiar characters and put them in a new humorous setting that we think will entertain kids and parents alike."

The show's creative team has a pedigree going back to the beloved 1990s children's series "Animaniacs," "Pinky & the Brain" and "Tiny Toon Adventures," which might give us some idea of the tone of the series.

The show takes place in "Jollywood," whose Queen Delightful calls upon Happy, Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Dopey, Grumpy and Doc (yes, the old names remain intact) to keep order in the kingdom. No word if Snow will make an appearance.

What do you think of the new look? Share your thoughts below.

Thanks for the publish. I have constantly observed that a majority of people are desperate to lose weight as they wish to appear slim along with attractive. Having said that, they do not usually realize that there are additional benefits for losing weight additionally. Doctors state that fat people are afflicted by a variety of illnesses that can be instantly attributed to their particular excess weight. The good news is that people who definitely are overweight plus suffering from several diseases can help to eliminate the severity of their own illnesses by simply losing weight. You are able to see a gradual but noted improvement in health if even a bit of a amount of losing weight is attained.

Walt Disney did not create the story of Snow White and the 7 dwarves. He did give the dwarves different names from the originals. So why can't someone else take their own interpretation of the dwarves just as Walt did. Just because his is the best known, doesn't mean he created everything.

Why can't people leave well enough alone? This is slap in the face to all of us who grew up
with the iconic dwarves we knew and loved. Disney sucks now and so do those who are
always changing the past to suck up to the marketplace and to the demographics in America
which unfortunately is changing.........starting with the White House..

HORRIBLE!!!! What the hell is Disney thinking???? I wish they would just stop trying to "revision" everything! Have FAITH in what Walt created! If you must have some stupid new animation dwarfs, then call them gnomes, magical elves, or sprites! Just DON'T refer to them as the dwarfs from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs"! Have some respect here! I don't care if the cartoon is a huge major hit with the kiddies and makes Disney a ton of money! Just DON'T try to "revision" the classic look of the Seven Dwarfs! You're breakin' my heart, Disney! 🙁

The original story was "Snow White and the Seven DWARFS." In fact, "dwarfs" was the only correct plural of "dwarf" until Tolkien wrote "dwarves" in his novels, which became very popular.

    • Bob Weasel

Actually, Tolkien re-created the proper pluralization of 'dwarves' (following the same logic as 'elves') from the original word-stock. It's not as if he simply made it up.

If you like the dwarfs and feel comfortable living and sleeping with them, that would be something that you are allowed to do in the privacy of your own home, and if it feels good!! do it..!! No body’s business if you like to have seven lovers..

Can't stand fish hooks. Stupid cartoon. Love the old Snow White & the seven little men & this is just an insult to Walt Disney. I think he would hate what is being done to this BELOVED BY MILLIONS cartoon. I won't be watching & neither will my grandson. Can't we leave the old favorites alone? Is there not enough cartoonist talent out there to make up something new instead of basing it on the old. Come on, get more creative & stop re-doing everything that came before. If they start messing with Bambi, it's all over folks.

LOL. The word grandson verified what I was thinking. It's a common theme to have the older generation dislike what generations after them enjoy. Times change, I don't particularly care for some of the stuff my kids like, but Hey, they like it. The article says the show is for Disney Junior. If I'm correct, Fish Hooks is a regular Disney show, so THE 7D may not be like Fish Hooks at all. You can't get all mad just because the characters you know LOOK different today. The article gave barely a glimpse of what the show will be about and yet, you already hate it. Also, in regards to your comment about finding new material, didn't Walt Disney rework an older version of Snow White?

As for the character designs...if you look at kids books out there, there are a million different styles out there that appeal to kids. This style may not appeal to you or I, but I am glad that Disney doesn't stick with one style for their shows. I personally wish they scrapped their Live shows and stuck with just cartoons....same goes with Nickelodean.

Walt Disney didn't care about animation after the 40s. Peter Pan, Alice, Cinderella were all long term projects started in the 40s. After that there were only a handful of cartoons made (Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmations, Sleeping Beauty, Sword in the Stone). The animator's strike in1941 and 4 years of government cartoons killed his enthusiasm for that. Disney's bread and butter was live action, merchandise, and starting in the mid 50s, theme parks.

Mike, in all honesty, cartoons have never been better....especially the writing. Just because the art style is not the same style as Disney did 70 years ago doesn't mean the shows don't have considerable talent behind them. I may not like to style, but I bet kids will.

I guess the "D" stands for D O R K S. i agree with the vast majority of the people on here, they look like crap. I have three kids, they are 6, 7, and 8 years old. They are your average funny loving kids that love to play and watch TV when we let them " a couple of hours a week" and they at there young age refuse to watch low quality programing. Poorly drawn, unrealistic dribble is not tolerated by them. My son has gone to his room one his own and pulled out a book to read rather than watch shows like aurthor. Some have said this will appeal to children; I don't know, the original Disney animated version appealed to children just fine. This is taking animation to a new low for Disney. Over-simplification seems to be the order of the day, and unfortunately, with this cartoon, Disney seems to be playing to that audience. I've not been happy with the quality of most animated shows lately and this one looks like no exception.
I suppose this may pretend to help nasty children to learn that everyone is different but I doubt if it will change anything.
Now, the Rugrats were somewhat crudely drawn but the stories were great. Not sue with the latest ones.

I think the new look is flat and without dimension. I think kids need to see a more real look to the characters, along with a moralistic approach. There does not seem to be any real talent or effort put into drawing these characters. I think bringing the original movies back to share with children would be much better.

A new low. Disney cartoons and their classic hand-drawn artwork was one thing that led me into lifelong career as a graphic designer; this would have made me choose something else. The look is flat, dull and uninteresting–glitzy at first glance, but ultimately visually boring and cheap.

  78. No White & The Seven Nots

No White & The Seven Nots – that's eight nos in all. However, when it airs, in 2014, I'll give it a fair chance and watch a couple of episodes to see if the reboot brings anything new or quirky to the Snow/Dwarves story but at first glance, the Dwarves look like they're going to b played for stooges and dimwits – but appearances can be deceiving and animation is meant to be watched not viewed as a still image. It's geared towards the 2-7 yo audience but if it's subversively clever, it could play to the late night adult crowd and especially, fans of Dopey, if you know what I mean.
From the visual clues In the promotional image, looking left to right, it appears the Dwarves are:
Bashful (his hat over eyes, like Mushmouth from Fat Albert fame),
Sleepy (drooping hat & eyes, pajamas and a cuddly bear thing),
Dopey (mismatched socks, "hillbilly/Dogpatch clown" appearance),
Happy (musician, maybe his songs are overly peppy and annoying?),
Grumpy (flower pot on head, a crackpot conspiracy nut?),
Doc (the traditional spectacles, llooks like the more studied/professional of the bunch),
Sneezy (pocket handkerchief? looks like his tie might spin when he sneezes, also, looks like Harpo Marx)

"For dwarf, the common form of the plural was dwarfs —as, for example, in Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs— until J. R. R. Tolkien popularized dwarves; he intended the changed spelling to differentiate the "dwarf" fantasy race in his novels from the cuter and simpler beings common in fairy tales, but his usage has since spread. Multiple astronomical dwarf stars and multiple nonmythological short human beings, however, remain dwarfs."

"the plural of "dwarf" is DWARFS, not dwarves." Correct. JRR Tolkien used the ancient variant "Dwarves" to emphasize that his characters were a separate race and not dwarfed humans. The plural is dwarfs for humans, and dwarves for Tolkien's creations.

In order to draw the classic Dwarfs we all know and love you have to understand the human form and the way it moves.
Even with the cartoon appearance of their faces, there was a deep knowledge of human proportions and genius level ability to convey the essence of gesture and movement. Those kind of artists still exist but there is a sad lack of respect for those skills. Everything needs to be "edgy". And we get ugly looking character designs as seen here as a result where the figures are so distorted any kind of animation becomes acceptable because they barely resemble humans anymore. Therefore you can hire cheaper artists and crank out the shows. And whatever happened to having quality illustrators produce beautiful watercolor paintings for the backgrounds? Oh yeah, just use the gradient tool in Photoshop and you're done.

The seven dwarfs don't need a new look because Disney shouldn't do a new show. Leave the classics alone and come up with with a brand new idea for the show. I bet the reason the pictures are so cheesy is because Disney doesn't have real animators, they just let a computer do the work.

They look ridiculous, like clowns, not dwarfs. Little people are not buffoons in hideously animated cartoons (real animators don't seem to exist anymore), and I'm sure the stories will make the characters seem stupid or have no real story but some boring "lesson." If you're going to have a show about the Seven Dwarfs, hire Little People.

Not by a long shot. Just because we don't like the way this has been done, does not mean we are old hide-bound dummies. Personally I won't let any of my children view Disney Jr., any more that I want them watching the garbage spewing out of there for the last couple of decades. The critique of the are being cheesy is right on target, it is amateurish and looks like something a talented 7 year old would draw,Yes this channel is targeted at the younger children which makes it even more concerning as shows like "Pinky & the Brain" and "Tiny Toon Adventures" are not suitable for younger audiences. The "New 7 Dwarves" is being created by the same creative team. While I can not speak for other parents, but for myself and family I watch everything first to ensure that it is "family & age" appropriate. Disney may once have been family & children appropriate, but it isn't now and hasn't been for a long time. Disney used to mean "quality" programing, now it is just this side of trashy. If you wish to view it then, by all means, do so but stop denigrating those who disagree with the turn for the worse that Disney has taken.

Disney hasn't been interested in the very best of storytelling since Walt was alive. This is why they've had to buy up talent from elsewhere, and beat the marketing horse to death, which hasn't worked out for them so well either. So now we have a company that should be much better, doing the creativity version of flopping around like a grounded fish, with a crew of mindless sycophants producing excrement which Mr. Hanks refers to as "beloved." That one with the flowerpot on his head, who appears to be the "grumpy" one, looks like he was derived from something drawn by the late, great Don Martin.

On an unrelated note, the one with mandolin (?) appears to have a French horn shoved up into a very uncomfortable place.

I am an adult and love the way they look. I am definitely interested in giving the show a try. I am very happy with the animation.

They don't appear to represent who they are, i.e. sleepy, grumpy, dopey, etc. Couldn't they do better than that?

OMG! When will they stop messing with my childhood? These people should look for their own (new) ideas instead of screwing with my world order. The things I believe, the memories that make me, well ME are being "revitalized".

They most certainly do look like their names. You can guess who everyone is.

      From left to right:
Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Happy, Grumpy, Doc and Dopey.

don't get too excited , it's Disney not Warner Bros , so it's bound to be slow-pitch not entertaining.
