Angelina Jolie donates $100k to Syrian refugees

Angelina Jolie isn't so busy with her filming schedule for “Maleficent” that she’s lost sight of what’s happening elsewhere in the world.

In recognition of World Refugee Day on Wednesday, the actress donated $100,000 to help Syrian refugees, the U.N. Refugee Agency said in a statement thanking her for the gift.

According to Us Weekly, Jolie said in a statement of her own that the "UNHCR believes even one person forced to flee is too many. And it's true. Every individual refugee matters. Each has their own story. Each has suffered and survived more than I could ever bear. And yet, they rise up to live another day."

The actress and her fiance, Brad Pitt, have a history of giving to people in need.

In December 2010, the couple donated a reported $2 million to the Naankuse Wildlife Sanctuary in Namibia, the country in which their daughter Shiloh was born.

The donation was made in Shiloh's name, with Jolie adding in a statement that she and Pitt "want her to be very involved and grow up with an understanding of her country of birth."

These folks are so rich that they can drop a $100,000 here, a few $1000,000 there. Wow, it must feel great... Good for them and may their money get spent wisely in helping other livings – people and animals.

Angelina Jolie is one of the most caring and generous celebrities in the world, and Brad Pitt is cut from the same cloth. They have donated millions to those in need, all over the world. In fact, Angelina gives one third of her money to others and that's a considerable amount of money. I think they're wonderful as individuals AND as a couple. Long may they live.

So she gives $2 million to a Wildlife Sanctuary and only $100,000 to help refugees. I love animals, but come on, aren't people more important. Funny, except for Brad's donations to the victims and rebuilding after Hurrican Katrina, you never here about Angelina giving any money to any US causes. I guess we don't have any needy or homeless people here.

It's her money! She can give when, how, why any way she wants. Why do you criticize???? She could give nothing. PS–people are not more important than animals. We are all animals. We don't take very good care of the other animals on earth, let alone "us" animals.

Her donation was a political, just a gesture with an obviously small donation of $100 thou. We don't need a high school dropout and her UN soundbites telling us what we should do. Most of us have enough on our plate looking after our families, keeping a roof over our head, food on the table and clothes on our back. We give in our communities and church when we can and in extraordinary events like Katrina, donated. This view that all Americans are rich is bizarre. I look at it that she is an American citizen and her country has been very good and generous to her. She wouldn't be wealthy for the most part if American moviegoers hadn't supported her career so that she could ask for the huge salaries that afford her a luxurious lifestyle. That is why I don't understand why she wouldn't focus on her own country to give back, in any way. Plenty of areas in need but she could start with the children going without, dealing with violence and abuse.

I get the feeling she doesn't appreciate that there are needy people in her own country including starving children. Or maybe giving to Americans wouldn't generate enough press for her internationally? Just weird how her donations always makes it into the news while other famous people prefer to do it anonymously. I guess their egos don't need to be massaged as much as hers does. Let's face it, for what she earns as an actress $100 thousand is piddly and will hardly put a dent into the needs of those in need. Most of that donation will go to cover administrative costs.

She's a UN Ambassador hence international involvement. They are trying to get press for donations and news coverage about conflicted areas in the world. If you knew anything about raising awareness then you know you need media coverage. FYI...America is not a 3rd world or impoverished country just because you need another ipad. Some areas in the world have no water, food, police, shelter or medical aid. Look past your yard buddy.

Be glad,if someone is generous to help the needy refugees. This people are running for their life, abandoned all what they have. Living in quarters,no money, food and just rely on generosity of strangers and lucky if they can eat once a day. Ms. Jolie witness their situation in the field. Only the UN organization are allowed to intervene and help the wounded and children dying for starvation. All of the people in US,don't experience this, unless you are lazy. Our govt and tax payer are supporting all in need and helpless. She is not a billionaire, she is just ordinary movie star, with big name, but with big heart!..She have no intention to expose her gifts, but UN need help funding their work in the field, either comes from rich nation, private people who are generous. We have few Billionaires, they choice where to donate their money and causes, but they are not expose as Brad and Angelina Jolie. Kudos for her good heart, she is a real sweet heart! She does donate to US organizations. She even had a foundation devoted to donating specifically to Native American programs and projects – The All Tribes Foundation. I think it gave over $1 million away over about 4-5 years. Is that American enough for you?

It is very important in modern philanthropy to publicize gifts, especially big gifts. That garners more donors and more attention to the recipient organization and its work. It also works as a imprimatur for those organizations since others assume that before such a large amount is gifted that proper vetting was done.
Kudos to her for helping these people. No one in the US endures what these refugees endure. No one.

Mother Theresa, aka Angelina Jolie, donating is fine as long as she DOES NOT go there any time soon (unless it is a movie that's shot somewhere else) until the choas blows over, and a new gov't is in place, which will be quite a while; my educated guess is by new year or hopefully a lot more sooner-as out with the old regime and in with the new lifestyle!

Seriously people, she donated and I am glad that it drew attention because people who were not aware of what is going on, now is. And people stop complaining about US folks should be concerned with the people here. Really? The poorest person here is considered well-off in a 3rd world country. People here can always get food if they tried. In a 3rd world country, they are lucky if they get a bag ful of corn meal to eat AND they are lucky if they even have running water. Now top that off with trying not to get killed by rebels or contracting malaria from mosquitoes. Get a clue.

There is still merit when someone donates publicly because it draws attention as most people wouldn't know what legit agency to donate to.

As with yesterday, there was the bus monitor who was taunted. Someone started a public campaign and now, the lady can retire if she wanted to.

I've heard from many fellow actors who have worked with Angelina that she's down to earth and very kind, instigates conversation with people whereas other actresses had people fired or complained when being looked at, talked to, etc.

Anyone who complains that she gives to foreigners doesn't understand how much worse others around the world have it than us. I struggle financially and give when I can but if I was her, I'd do the same thing. Maybe she does donate domestically but anonymously and only allows foreign donations to be public to help highlight other places/ways we can help. Either way, charity is charity so don't hate.

Thirdly, I also do not recall hearing complaints from citizens in other countries when they have come to the aid of American citizens when tragedy has struck in the pass..if fact I recall several countries coming to the aid of Americans damn quickly when the need was there with time, money and supplies. Jolie and Pitt have donated lots of money and time to New Orleans. They cannot give to all the impoverished communities in the USA. I myself see people on a daily basis who live off the system and do nothing for themselves but get fat and have kids every year. In this country a lot of people not all, but the majority can get help from the government if need be. In those countries they are at the mercy of the outside world. More power to her if she wants to give to causes like that.

To all those who say that she is giving to stay in the spotlight, I have two questions for you: Is she picking up the phone and calling every single news agency and paparazzi to follow her around and capture the very moment that she signs and delivers that check? Or are the news agency and paparazzi following her around like sick puppies to create sensationalist stories around her so that we can consume and continue talking about her and buying magazines? Just a thought...

Catching up on the last 3 days of posts, I have come to the conclusion:

rotflmao = fake observer= central scrutinizer = jellybean = every other pathetic troll on these blogs.

I don't care how skeletal she is. I'd still fist her in the ass all the way to my elbow while Brad Pitt sucks me off.

In the olden times, oh back say 30 years ago, when famous people gave to charities or to benefit others in need they did it quietly and asked that the name not be used because they understood that the help they gave monetarily was more important by far than the donors themselves. I remember being impressed when I would find out after a wealthy famous person had passed away it was revealed that they had been giving away millions all their lives. Not as impressed when it seems to help keep that person in the limelight...

Curious as to why a charitable donation must be anonymous to hold more credence. That makes no sense. So it is in the news that she donated a huge chunk of change to an organization. What if she screamed it from the rooftops? Who cares.

It's unfortunate that she has to have every single deed followed by cameras and press releases. I would have more respect for her if she actually did something out of the goodness of her heart instead of the purposes of trying to cement her image to something more than a blood-toting neurotic. Why can't she do anything without using it as a media opportunity?

How do you even know that as a fact? It is obvious that the entertainment media is always in the face of the entertainer. They really don't have much of a private life anymore. Who cares if the meda covers this or not. What they did was very generous, and I'm sure it is not to further their careers. That is just plain stupid. Too bad more rich folks don't do more good for those in need. May I ask what you've done lately to help somebody who is need?

The disclosure of the gift came from the organization, not Angie. I have read the comment from her in another article awhile ago, so it may not even been about this donation. Hint: "US Weekly" reported....... Some want to believe the worst in her regardless of facts. The only thing that really matters is that a lot of people will be helped with that donation.

How could you possibly know her intent? And who cares if it's made public or not. She donated a huge sum to a cause she believes in. How can that possibly be wrong?

What a beautiful lady she is, inside and out. Folks are so jealous of her that can't stand it. i would think folks would only have great things to say about someone who cares so much for other folks in need.
