Johnny Depp, Vanessa Paradis split after 14 years

After months of dogged rumors that they were headed for a breakup, Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis confirmed on Tuesday that they're no longer a couple.

The pair "have amicably separated," a rep for 49-year-old Depp tells CNN in a statement. "Please respect their privacy and, more importantly, the privacy of their children.”

Reports that their 14-year relationship was on the rocks began circulating earlier this year, but Paradis, 39, reportedly brushed off the gossip as false.

The pair have two children together, Lily, 13, and Jack, 9.

Good job couple. Marriage is a stupid idea unless it's temporary and for a specific purpose. If you love your freedom and you love marriage, then there's hypocrisy involved.

Saul Alinsky, can't you read? Or do you really think Obama somehow broke Depp and Paradis up?

Wouldn't it be great if CNN installed filters for Obama, etc. to remove them automatically the way they do when someone tries to post something with "bad" words in it? Just have a program that evaluates posts and automatically deletes them, if, for example, they are substantially off-topic. They could also cross-reference posts from IP or MAC addresses, and if they see some machine posting the same basic message to multiple different unrelated boards, just auto-delete them all, and ban that IP or MAC address from posting on CNN! What a great idea! Then people like me wouldn't have to wade through a bunch of ignorant comments that have nothing to do with what the post was about. to read and take part in the conversation. Such posts (as those about Obama either screwing up, or not screwing up whatever thing these people want to think he did or didn't do) should I would think violate the CNN.com's TOS.

A successful fourteen year relationship isn't exactly 'using someone up and spitting them out' and Vanessa is not some unknown woman without her own career or resources.
They had a good long relationship which would NOT have been lengthened by marriage, they are going their separate ways. The children are still loved by both, and the fact this is an amicable ending to the relationship should benefit the kids as well. People's lives change, and they change more mercurially when they are famous and on the move all the time. Cut them some slack and for F's sake get those racist would-be political masterbators off the comments board!!

    What is President Obama hiding?

    1) Fast and Furious was created to reinstate the assault rifle (or stricter) ban by showing easy access to guns by drug cartels.

    2) The death of Brian Terry the border patrol agent was not the first. Prior to Brian, there were over 200 deaths in Mexico due to these guns. Brian Terry’s death just attracted the attention of politicians.

    3) The President OK’d the start of the program.

    4) As the program continued, President Obama was informed of the deaths occurring in Mexico due to guns that had slipped away.

    5) President approved the continuation of the program, that the mounting deaths were acceptable and necessary casualties to justify the passage of a gun ban.

    6) This is what the President fears will be revealed; he traded hundreds of Mexican lives for his ideological goal of a gun ban.

    7) Impeachment proceedings begin next week.

This is just the excuse you and millions of other teapartiers were looking for to hold something against him. This whole thing is much ado about nothing. Except for the fact that a Federal Agent was killed, that is sad.

But this program started under GWB and you nor anyone else cared about the thousands of different "programs" that the US Govt. ran everyday that ended in disaster. People should think twice about marrying someone who grew up in a different country and culture.
You can end up feeling lonely when you can't connect about shared experiences in the same culture
or country. I've seen many such marriages end. What do you have in common? What are the
values you grew up with? When values differ, you are headed for divorce.

First of all he should have never been able to be a president or any political officer because he is not American no matter what he says. I don't believe he was born anywhere in the US. He has run the United States in the ground and we may never survive it. And I am sure since he is buying up all the votes he can that people will be dumb enough to put him back in office. I could live the rest of my life very wealthy with just the money he and his gorilla wife have spent on 'shopping and vacations'. It isn't cheap to run Air Force One..... and they do it so often for nothing. So don't let anybody tell you different.... you are on the right track here.

@Jack, so are you suggesting Obama is somehow responsible for the end of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis' 14 year-long relationship?

Do you have any evidence to support such an assertion, or are you just vomiting diarrhea out of your face-hole on CNN's discussion boards by posting incendiary and generally false, stupid, and malicious comments where they don't belong because they have nothing to do with the story?

This board or blog is about Depp and Paradis. I don't think Obama is responsible, no matter how much you'd like to blame him for everything you see as wrong in the world. While you're at it, why not add that he was the second gunman on the grassy knoll, that he was once somehow John Wilkes Booth, and Dr. Samuel Mudd, both; that he is the reincarnation of Benedict Arnold, Adolf Hitler, and the Roman Emperor Nero, the guy who killed Archduke Ferdinand, and Pontius Pilate all simultaneously?

As his first term draws to a close, all of you who are for some reason thinking and writing about him where the story is about the break-up of a couple of famous actors, perhaps it's time you got used to his being president. I'm not a fan, didn't vote for him, won't vote for him, think he's been pretty bad, but I will LMFAO if he wins reelection, just because I know what it will do to all of YOU. On balance, better a poor president than a stupid one, (like his predecessor)! So sit and spin, losers!

Not necessarily. Don't they live in Crazifornia? They were together very publicly for 14 years, and who knows how long privately before that? Plus they have not one, but TWO kids together... a case could easily be made for alimony based on common law marriage. His only hope of not having to support her is that she won't seek support, because she doesn't need it or she doesn't want it, or values her reputation or harmony or peace and quiet more, etc.

If she doesn't make at least close to what he makes, he's probably going to have to part with a fair chunk of cash, if only to pay the lawyers. That's who wins in virtually 100% of contested divorces: the lawyers. They usually even make their daily wages on uncontested divorces, it's just that when there's a fight, they stand to make a whole lot more.

On the flip side, in the unlikely (I'd say, based on I've heard of him and have really never heard of her, except in connection to him) event she has or makes way more money than he does... who knows, she might end up having to pay HIM alimony! But this being the US, and I think they live in CA, (I don't know this for a fact, it's just where most movie and film actors seem to be, there and New York when they live in the US...)

Its so shameful that the high rate of divorce is from the white countries and this is due to lack of discipline. In Africa you hardly hear of divorce here and there.the whites do it as if divorce is a normal way of life what a shame.

I am not sure of divorce in Africa but you do here a lot about child rape. South Africa has an extraordinarily high rate of murders, assaults, rapes (adult, child and infant). The incidence of rape has led to the country being referred to as the "rape capital of the world".[16] One in three of the 4,000 women questioned by the Community of Information, Empowerment and Transparency said they had been raped in the past year.[17] More than 25 per cent of South African men questioned in a survey published by the Medical Research Council (MRC) in June 2009 admitted to rape; of those, nearly half said they had raped more than one person.[

Newsflash – divorce is tied directly to the financial status of women. The reason women in the US divorce more is that they have become more financially independent, and thus aren't chained to bad relationships. How prosperous are African women right now? 1 + 1 = 2 Are we getting the picture?

So you prefer the African option huh? D you mean the one where the wives have to stay or risk being murdered by a husband who considers the wife property? Or the option where women have to stay for economic reasons no matter how often they are beaten? Or the one where the husband sleeps with every other woman he can get his hands on without ever using condoms then give his wife AIDS? Please be specific.

Yes, Africa is such a glowing example for all of us in so many areas. With the growing Muslim influence there, I'm sure people are afraid to get divorced for fear of getting killed/stoned/shunned, etc.

Assuming you're right, which I doubt, as I'm not sure how you could possibly get reliable data to base such an assumption on, that there is a typical rate of divorce in "white countries" versus countries in Africa... which I don't think you are...

You're comparing apples and pagers. These are not only NOT the same things, they're emphatically different. Also, is she really from Africa? If she is, I'd say she was (or was the descendant of) Europeans herself, so I'm not sure how Africa even entered the conversation.

The US (even amongst African Americans) has a very different culture from Africa, what it means and what it takes to be married is different, especially given that both places (the US and Africa) are so vast that to make a sweeping generalization about the culture of either is absurd... there are many diverse cultures and socio-economic realities in different regions in both places.

The fact is relationships ending (whether nuptials were formally exchanged or not) is much more common in people who work in and around show-business than in many other fields. I won't even try to speculate as to why that might be, but a 14 year relationship between Hollywood types is like a 140 year relationship in most other places. They far outlasted so many of their contemporaries... (they were together for an eternity compared to some!) that it's something to marvel at.

In fact, they were, according to the article, together as a couple almost long enough to raise a child from birth to adulthood, and that's something to be proud of, nowadays. It's sad that that's something to be proud of, but nonetheless, many relationships, even marriages don't even last a year, they made 14. Give them a break, and a round of applause!

This is sad for the children but what's just as sad is that a 14 year relationship for celebrities is actually considered a success, most don't come close to lasting that long. For the haters of Depp, you may have your opinions of him but he really is a nice and genuine person. I had the opportunity to meet him in New Mexico on-set and let me tell you that you couldn't meet a nicer or more down-to-earth person. The same cannot be said for many other celebrities.

Soo many people are hypocrites. Depp can "live" with a woman for 14yrs., a multi-millionare, without even marrying her, and have kids. But if an NFL or NBA player does the same thing, oh, they're dogs. Ultimate hypocricy the way people are in the US.

The fact that Johnny Depp is almost 50. When I was 11, I had his "21 Jump Street" pin-up on my wall...I'm getting old!

14 hours per day on a set is "hard work"–wealth does not necessarily mean laziness. Sure, actors are overpaid, but a blue collar position does not always indicate "hard work"–also, not our place to judge why anyone gets married. Why do factory workers "even get married"?

    • @Central

He made it worse, huh? How do you figure that? Last I knew we were losing jobs at a rate of 750,000 per month under Bush. Obama has created 4.3 million. Obama wins on that one. Unemployment is coming down, even though it is slow going. GDP is up. Consumer confidence is up. Small home building is up. We are out of Iraq & working on getting out of Afghanistan, and the nation has stayed safe under Obama. Do you remember 911? Who was President? Obama saved the auto industry. You know, I could go on & on. Your statement was not only stupid, but not even factual. You come from the party of old white men who think they know what's good for this country. I personally resent the fact that they have made it their mission to tell us women just how to treat our own bodies. Maybe you should contact the House, & tell them to work on getting jobs on their agenda, instead of passing abortion bills. So again, just because Romney said he made it worse, you believe him. This coming from a man who has NO policies to talk about, and if he did, he change the story, being the world's biggest flipflopper. He has no platform except to give tax cuts to the rich. Think we've been there before. Look what they did to the federal deficit. It is so easy to blame Obama, but don't forget, the gop came right out & said that their mission was to make him a one term president. Just think what good could have been accomplished if the right would have actually tried to work with him & get something done to benefit this country. Just one more thing, what did Romney & Obama do yesterday. Obama met with all the world leaders in Mexico, Romney was in Michigan making pies. Guess who I'd rather have as President.

@ Helga-really?! Who? Fox "news" watchers? At times, MSNBC seems to have a liberal slant, but CNN reports facts and is relatively objective. Whereas, Fox "news" will report crazy non-factual stories (e.g. "Obama is a Nazi! You heard it here first"), is an unabashedly, completely ultra-conservative channel, and relies on straw dog arguments, hype, and rumors to report "news". Even the Fox "powers that be" would not claim to report objectively. Just sayin'.

That "pressure" is precisely why they chose to live in France rather than in the U.S. I think the choice not to live here can certainly be credited with the fact that they lasted as long as they did. They were allowed to live a much more normal life in France than they would have been able to do here in the U.S....sadly enough.
