Happy 70th birthday, Paul McCartney!

Sir Paul McCartney turns 70 years young today, and remains just as much a fixture of music and pop culture as he was when Beatlemania swept the U.S. more than 40 years ago.

The 12 months since his last birthday have been busy ones for the former Beatle. He performed at the Grammys in February; headlined this month's concert in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's diamond jubilee; received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; put out an album of covers called "Kisses on the Bottom"; and also found time to walk down the aisle for the third time last fall.

Next month, he'll also close out the opening ceremony for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Speaking to Rolling Stone in February, McCartney sees no reason to stop doing what he loves the most.

"You get the argument, 'Make way for the young kids.' And you think, 'F*** that, let them make way for themselves," he said. "If they're better than me, they'll beat me."

And besides, he added, "If you're enjoying it, why do something else?"

Words of wisdom from a legend.

In honor of McCartney's birthday, singer Paul Weller is offering a one day only downloadable cover of The Beatles' "Birthday," and we'd love to hear what McCartney favorites you're listening to as we celebrate his 70th in the comments below.

Paul, thank you for your music and your passion. I have enjoyed learning to play guitar because of you and the Beatles and at 52 I still love music and playing. I intend to continue playing music till I die. Happy 70th birthday.

My feelings: "nostalgia"; to think I was only 15 y.o. and how much I enjoyed listening to the "Beatles". And to top it all, my husband is the same age as him. Happy Birthday Mr. McCartney!

Paul was my favorite Beatle and "I wanna hold your hand" was the first 45 I bought when I was 12 and he was 22. Dreamed of marrying him, but I thought he was too old for me!! Happy birthday to my first celebrity crush.

Wonderful Career, Paulie! From dung heap dives to the "toppermost of the poppermost," through the
travails of the drab 1970s and the rediculous 1980s, through the laborious 1990s to today.
Rock 'n Roll; Classical Music; Opera; Ballet. A fully experienced career with tragedy and triumph.
It seems as if your story is straight out of a novel brought to reality. Tell us the name of your "Lucky Star"!

Beatles Music: Neo-classical popular music with a accent on the backbeat.
Great to listen to but too complex and mixed to play live properly. Only failure of "Beatles Music" I can think of.

Keep going and good luck to you!

    Retire already...you've had your day.
He's my least fave Beatle and definately over-rated
The best music he wrote was in collaboration with John Lennon
Wings was HORRIBLE and his music today is forgettable.
