'Dallas' returns: What's the verdict?

After 21 years, "Dallas" returned to primetime Wednesday night on TNT just as outlandish and over-the-top as ever. But for some TV critics, that's not a compliment.

The show is essentially picking up where it left off, with Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy reprising their roles as J.R. and Bobby Ewing, respectively. ( Linda Gray's Sue Ellen is back as well.)

In this new version, the older Ewings have spawned a new generation, with Josh Henderson playing the son of J.R., John Ross, and "Desperate Housewives'" Jesse Metcalfe portraying Bobby's adopted son Christopher. This time around, John Ross is the oil-hungry Ewing while Christopher plans to make use of alternative energy sources.

TNT stayed close to familiar territory with its updated version and the fight over Southfork is still going strong. Yet while that may please returning fans, it could also make "Dallas" feel outdated,  Salon points out in its review.

"The new 'Dallas' isn't even entertaining," and "could not feel more irrelevant," the review critiques. "To the best of its ability, the original 'Dallas' was modern, not to mention playful and salacious, whereas the new 'Dallas' is a flat reanimation of an out-of-date format."

Although USA Today also found "Dallas'" return to be wholly needless, the review did give kudos to Larry Hagman. Calling the return of the former characters "the only wise decision the show's re-creators [made]," the review adds that Hagman was, "as always ... in a class by himself." Too bad, the review noted, that he returned in an "embarrassing throwback" without anything fresh to offer.

The Hollywood Reporter was just unimpressed with TNT's "Dallas" revival, warning that even the nostalgic shouldn't revisit this long-running soap.

"This is pandering of the lowest kind," THR says in its review. "The writing is brutal and obvious, the acting is comical, and none of it is bettered by the directing ... 'Dallas' is terrible."

But the New York Post suggests that the familiar backstabbing and betrayal will win you over eventually, saying in its review that the new "Dallas" is "more ridiculous, campier, more preposterous and so totally over the top that it's skirting insanity," counting those as reasons to love the updated spin.

Entertainment Weekly also found the new "Dallas" to be "a rare example of an artistically successful TV-classic update." TNT's version has its flaws, but overall, it's still a "solidly constructed soap," "wooden dialogue, oily plot twists" and all.

TNT is owned by the parent company of CNN.

What'd you think of "Dallas'" return?

Critics don't give bonafide facts. They give their opinions, which to me, add up to nothing. I agree that they should find another line of work. I think that the show is fantastic!! They have updated it, yet kept it familiar with the lead stars. It's so disappointing that we have to wait until 2013 for the next season.

I remember Dallas back in the 80's along with Dynasty remember that Show? The new version is interesting because they are focusing on the new generation...The era with Miss Ellie, Jock and the other characters that's all in the past...People need to stop "living in the past"...The feuds may not be exact as in the original but and take into consideration that most of those characters are either dead or way too old to reprise their roles...Jr. is still awesome and I like Bobby's spunk and regardless of age he can still "Kick ass"....

I was not at all disappointed! Would have liked to see Victoria Principal again,
however Bobby's new wife is growing on me. I thought the writers and actors are doing a great job and it is holding my interest. Love that Larry Hagman & Patrick Duffy! Love the suspense! Seems like any professional critics who
bad mouth the show need to talk to the viewers. I haven't spoken to anyone who doesn't like it!

I love the new show too. I needed a replacement for Desperate Housewives for the juicy, scandalous nonsense that I love. I would however like a better cast of women. I like Bobby's wife ( Brenda Strong) and thank God they brought back Linda Grey. Dallas had a variety of southern belles in the day and this new cast of women is like a bad soap at noon. I want the big hair and southern charm that goes with 1970's-80's Dallas. Maybe get some of the cast of GCB that was cancelled, they were true, fun southern woman. LOVE LARRY HAGMAN! He is still the man!

Some people may think that Dallas is a old and out dated show but not me I'm 33 years old and really young at the time of the first show which I look at with my mom I think bringing Dallas back on the air in up to date times with the same story lines where it pick up where the old one left off isn't just genius but it gives the new generation a chance to understand some of what Dallas was all about keep it running long as you can

I loved the new "Dallas" more the mos of the original one. It was extremely well done, and didn't stray so far from the original it would offend older fans and kept it modern enough to appeal to a whole new generation. The negative critics can go fly a kite, we don't care what you think. TNT did a fantastic job on it. Now, I hope they do the same with "Dynasty" soon.

No. JR didnt shoot himself.. it was not shown..just a gunshot was heard and there were three subsequent movies re-unions which reunited the cast and continued the storyline beyond the original series. So no, JR did not shoot himself in the series final ending.. it was a classic cliffhanger or Did He or Didn't He

I, William, watched religiously & loved old Dallas! I was so excited when I read Dallas was returning on TNT. So much so, I had my partner, Steve, watch every episode from beginning to end by dvd. He became fascinated & addicted to Dallas too. The first 2 episodes of Dallas are completely satisfying. The new cast & old cast are great. I believe that in 2012 this is what each one of them might be doing. The original was great & the new is very, very good. It's so nice to have my fave show back on tv.

Although I did find it to lack the excitement I was hoping it would have, the entire set up is quite enjoyable. It definitely came to life once JR was walking around and sputtering his great one liners. I can't wait til he puts his son, John Ross, in his place.

But I wish it just made me want to watch more. i will stick around for the next episode, as well as the following but if the pace and the enormity of the stories still around than I might wait til the cliffhanger to see if I will stick around for more. I found it to be well acted but the writing was a bit lame to say the least. I wanted Sue Ellen to be more of a force in John Ross' life than she seems to be and I love that she is on top BUT DO NOT want her running for political office because those stories BORE me to tears on soaps. As for Bobby and Ann, I can see them fitting perfectly into the Miss Ellie and Clayton roles while JR will always be JR and now he will have a little bit of Jock in him.

As for John Ross and Christopher and the actors playing them, I like them. I think you get a feeling of who they are and who their dads are. John Ross' girlfriend (chris' ex-gf) is a bit thin on development and which she had more interaction with her mother, the ewing maid. It would be nice to see that dynamic played out as it would reenforce the old "Barnes-have nots" to the Ewings-have all connection to the old show. Christopher's new wife is a bit too generic for me and I really am not too interested in who she and her brother really are because I just don't think in the end it will be SHOCKING. I wish that the mysteries were with the TRUE cast and not the ones I can see gone by season 2.

All in all, I'm glad Dallas is back on TV if only to reenforce what REVENGE showed that soap operas are a genre that never dies but needs to be reinvented. Daytime needs to take a page from this book before it;s too late to do so.

The theme: super to hear it after all of these years. Chills? Yep, just like the old days.
Cast well picked. However, does anyone remember who Ann was in the old series? I can't remember her, except that I understand that she might have gone out with Cliff Barnes once. Wish they'd have fleshed that one character out in the intro a little bit more.
Pam? Well, I read in Entertainment Weekly that she was asked to join the cast and she declined. It seems that she wanted her privacy. Not sure why she'd not want to jump at this opportunity, but I guess folks change/move on.
Kept looking for Cliff. Now, those scenes will be incredible to watch.
As for Hagman, Duffy and Gray? They look marvelous. And, Hagman, who is 80 and had recently been diagnosed with cancer in real life, did not miss a beat in reprising his roll. Still a snake in the grass. Loved the walker scene, "Look and watch." Gray is still gorgeous (remember, she is not a 20-30 something). Duffy is still that lovable self.
Did not think that Tilton looked that good myself. Just because you are short and over 50, does not mean you have to look dumpy. Sorry, Charlene! I'm not dissing you. My Momma was 81 when she died. She was 5'2" and a fashion plate. Not overweight and very well put together. Just find folks who will inspire you.
Oh, back to Dallas! I really loved the show and look forward to watching more episodes. I think that it is refreshing to watch something like this now. There are too many reality shows. Who cares who goes out with a star guy? How many ways do we have to have to show folks in unsavory light?
So, that's my diatribe. Pardon my indulgence.

Yay! Watched it Thursday night- and love that they are re-running it so I DVR'd it again. I love that it is not a re-make. Bought back fun childhood memories. I'm surprised my mom would let me watch it so young, looking back, lol!
TNT, thanks! But please bring back Pam! I loved that Charlene Tilton was on- do more with her character. Dye Bobby's hair a bit- he's still handsome. JR's eyebrows really need a trim- badly. Linda Gray looks great- good for her! I bet her and JR reconcile- AGAIN!?!
Fun summer viewing. Critics can say what they want- it's us viewers who are spreading the buzz that will keep it on air.
FYI, I'm WELL under 40, I wasn't even born when it premiered but remember it from the 90's. A whole new demographic will enjoy it like their parents did! I liked the facebook page- I strongly reccomend anyone fuzzy on details of the original to check it out- it gave me lots of back info I'd never know otherwise.

I was not impressed. I give it one season tops. No time was spent on developing the characters. The thing that made Dallas a hit was everyone loved or hated the characters. It was fun. Here we dont even get to learn anything about them before they start to back stab each other. I think this show needs to go away. Leave us with the fond memories of the old show.

I think the show was great. I had the pleasure of watching a filming of an episode in Addison Texas back in 1988. I like the way the new producers took us back down memory lane. When the previous producers ended the show it was like taking a break while the two sons grew up. Well now the boys are grown up and the new producers are ready to continue the story in the same format which I think is successful. What a great touch bringing Ray and Lucy back. Watching the location shots on the new show brought back great memories of my visits to Dallas.

I was very young when the original Dallas aired, and I loved the show then. Watching it now, reminded me of how good it is. I love how the new generation picks up after the old generation. I love that Bobby and JR are still in it. I don't care what the critics say, this is a great show and the situations are modern. We are still struggling with the battle of oil versus other alternative fuels. Maybe now, with Christopher wanting to try and use alternative fuels and John Ross still wanting to use Oil from Southfork, information will come out that will better explain the pros and cons to both to help our younger generation have a better grasp for their future.

I hate critics. I quess they are just waiting for the next fake "reality" show to praise. I hate reality shows, they have ruined television. So why can't we have one nighttime soap that they don't try to take off the air? I loved the orginal Dallas. Used to watch it with my mother who was murdered this year. Dallas coming back made me think about the good times with her. I thought the new show was very good. So the critics can take a flying leap.

As JR EWING would say, the critics "should never pass up an opportunity to shut the hell up!" This show is great. The new cast is great. The story is great- typical Dallas storylines, but that's why America loved the show in the first place! I know this sounds mean but I really want Sue Ellen to get drunk. Linda Gray does such an excellent job playing drunk Sue Ellen. Maybe just a quick relapse and then back to recovery? LOL

Am I confused? I could swear that Christopher was JR's child with Kristen Shepard, Sue Ellen's sister! Bobby brought him to Southfork to confront JR after Kristen died. Before he could do that though, Pam saw the baby and thought Bobby had brought her an adopted child!! Bobby didn't have the heart to set things straight. Is this a wrong memory?

Kristin miscarried JR's baby, but soon after got pregnant again with someone else, and tried to pass Christopher off as JR's baby, but it wasn't. Christopher IS the son of Kristin Shepard and someone else, which makes Sue Ellen his aunt on the maternal side, and Sue Ellen his aunt on the adoptive side too since Bobby adopted him.

In any case this show is a winner! I really enjoyed it, and I was a fan of the old show. I usually don't like remakes but this one is very well done.

Jordan Lee, a business partner of Jock's and later JR and Bobby's, was Christopher's biological father. Kristin was blackmailing him for support also, playing all sides.

Loved it! When the opening credits came on and that awesome theme played I got chills... I'm SO happy they decided to keep the classic intro! I thought the pilot was pretty good. Did a good job of introducing the characters.. And it blended old and new really well. I was really afraid that the roles of Bobby, JR and Sue Ellen would be reduced to bit supporting parts.. I'm SO happy that they are integral characters! This show feels just like an old friend that's come to visit. And it hasn't changed a bit!

I agree with you. I grew up with this show. I was most curious to see how they would handle the opening credits. I had decided it wouldn't be "Dallas' without the original music. They did not disappoint us. I watched both episodes back-to-back and it really was like old friends had stopped in to visit for a couple hours. Although it is sad that "Miss Ellie" is not a part of this, I appreciated how they paid tribute to her.

I felt like a little kid the whole time because I was so excited. Thank goodness I live alone. The cats won't tell.

I was addicted to DALLAS the 1st time around and will be this time. It was awesome. There was a surprise around every corner in the show. DALLAS is Great! They sure don't make shows like this any more. All the reality crap, remakes that very seldom make it long, will never live up to DALLAS. JR, Bobby and Sue Ellen are looking real good and the suspense of the whole clan is back. JR is just getting started. Beware. I do miss Pam, wish she was back in it. (Miss Ellie & Jock to) however, I know they passed away. They were great tho. They need to show it on Friday nites at 8pm tho. Dallas is #1. Go Dallas!

Typical critics – they can't ever bring themselves to praise a soap. How is this show any more campy than Desperate Housewives was? Dallas was never my favorite back in the day, but I did enjoy it, and with nothing else to watch this summer, I was pleased to know I'd have this to look forward to. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. It's pure guilty pleasure. Were there some uneven spots? Of course - hello, it was the first episode. Most shows take at least a season to gain their footing. Also, I think the hand wringing over the original castmembers carrying most of the weight is unwarranted. I would expect over time, once the younger characters are fleshed out, become more established, and people become invested in them that the success or failure of the program will not hinge entirely on Larry Hagman (who WAS brilliant, in fact). Duffy was a pleasure as always, and Linda Gray really looks fantastic.

The only thing that could make this even better for me is if Donna Mills makes an appearance or two or twelve as Abby. In fact, if Dallas turns out to be a smash, maybe the producers would consider resurrecting Knots. I would hardly know what to do with myself. That show was Pure. Soap. All. The. Time.

It was fun and enjoyable- but tell John Ross to get rid of the fake Texas accent. I am from Texas- and it doesn't sound real from a cosmopolitan city like Dallas. Larry Hagman pulled it off years ago but for today- get rid of the redneck southern accent.

I thought it was great. I watched every episode from age 10 through age 23 (seriously) and I am not expecting this to be like the original. How can you? It's an updated contemporary version of the show. It's the next generation, no more no less. Old school fans should not come into this expecting it to be like the old. Period.

I wish I was a writer on the show because I know a good storyline that would shock everyone! How many of you all remember the Wes Parmalee storyline of 1986?

It wasn't bad. However, it was NOTHING like the old Dallas. It just couldn't touch it. My thing is I hope this is just a mini-series because Larry Hagman doesn't look like he can hold on for to much longer. That man is sick and old and needs to just chill, but he makes the show...the first one and this one so witout him there is no Dallas. The young characters are flat and they have no depth...true new age actors. Straight Hollywood. The old Dallas actors were real hardworking no so pretty yet pretty rough but not so rough cowboys but not really cowboys but played damn good cowboys type actors. It was so real given the time when acting was more about the art than about the money and how good you look. I will watch just because JR is a Hoot. Bobby didn't look bad either but they have aged and moving a little slow which is kind of sad to see because I remember when they were young and vibrant and seeing them on screen as old men ain't cute. I will keep watching and hoping it gets better.

I'm old Dallas die hard, and the critiques can say what they want, I thought it was great. JR is still his old double crossing out guessing self. JR still makes the show, even at his age he was great, sure hope they keep him in the shows heavily in the shows to come. I thought they did a pretty good job inter-mixing the old with the new. And Bobby, no matter what nice things JR told him you could see it in Bobby's eyes, he wasn't totally buying it. ha. Great change of pace show, so tired of TV taking the cheap way out and going with all reality shows. Thanks TNT.

What would be cool (for us Baby Boomers and Gen X'rs who grew up watching this) is flashbacks of certain relevant scenes from back in the day, weaved cleverly in the story. Kinda gives us "old school" watchers a "remember when" and enriches the interest of new watchers (who doesn't want to see a young J.R., Sue Ellen, Bobby, etc.). It makes it kinda fun.

Obviously, the critics weren't fans of the first 'Dallas'. My husband is not a "soapy" guy, but he actually said he will tune in next week. I like the idea that the all the scenes in the new Dallas are filmed on location at various places in and around Dallas. The last couple of seasons of the old Dallas were mostly filmed in a studio somewhere. You can tell the new one is filmed on location and real. Thanks TNT for bringing back 'JR' and the Ewing clan. I agree with one of the posts earlier, get rid of so many of the "reality" shows. We all know who can dance, sing and give a good laugh, we all live everyday in reality, we want to be entertained and not view people's lives like looking through and peep hole.

JR Ewing ( Hagman ) is still a very powerful character. There isn't anyone on TV who can come close. Coupled with
Sue_Ellen and Bobby, this is the best thing to air in many, many years ( that doesn't have some stupid singing and/or
dancing theme ). The John_Ross character is another story - why the "punk", angry young man act ( or is this guy
just a very shallow actor ) ??? Everyone else I'll get used to ( even though there's a decided "Latin" influence that I assume comes from Los Angeles that the rest of the country does not hold in high esteem ). Good Show - but kill
John_Ross off before he stinks up the whole show !!!!!

The exterior of the house needs updating. And, I agree with those that were disappointed in the choice of wardrobe for the scenes at the Cattle Baron's ball, those folks look as if they were browsing at North Park mall.

I don't know how many times a cliche can be thrown about before it dies an eternal death, but the writer's of the show need to reign themselves in...remember, Dallas is a wee bit more cosmopolitan these days.

Downtown screen shots were fun, but trust me, South Fork Ranch must have been cut-and-pasted with acreages from some other arena. That area of town looks nothing like this these days.

It's a good thing I'm not a native Texan; I would be hog-tied and run out of town for this...

Seriously, it was fun while it lasted, but it's time to move forward.

In the original show, the last thing that was mentioned of her was that she had some kind of disease and was expected to die, but we don't know if she did or not. Personally I hope she is, because I really like Bobby's new wife and don't need Pam to "return from the dead". I was 9 years old when the show premiered and 22 when it left the air in 1991, so this really brings back a whole bunch of nostaglia and I love, love, love that they kept the opening credits virtually the same as the original show.

Oh come on, a little bit of creativity please! Now if they had made John Ross the green loving alternative energy guy, and Christopher the capitalistic oil hungry guy.....THAT would have been entertaining! Better yet, have both JR & Bobby have had daughters as well as sons, and have them be the opposites. Way more room for drama!

FYI: To those who think that they killed Pam off, that isn't so. She was in a very bad car accident with a fuel tanker when Bobby called her on her cell phone. She didn't want anyone to see her the way she was, badlly burned and so she divorced Bobby again. The writers did not totally write Pam off. I was grateful to have something to watch that didn't have tacky "real housewives", or some stupid talent show. As for the critics who panned the show and mentioned bad writing.......... maybe all of you should look for other work, you obviously don't know what you're doing. I thought the problem with the new Dallas was that it wasn't outlandish and over the top enough, it was actually
pretty tame by the original show's standards – it was fun seeing Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy again though, so as long

I forgot to watch the show last night, but I'd say, judging from the reviews of many here – and a few of my friends, that this will be a hit! I hope to catch that episode in repeat-mode. Should be long, as long as the writers do not go back to when a season was "a total dream," just like when Pam woke up to see Bobby in the shower at the end of the 1985-86 season, despite Bobby's funeral to end the 1984-85 season. Even the new cast is growing on me. I hope others from the original show up as well. I didn't mind the nostalgia at all. The acting was good but the 2 new ladies (not Brenda Strong) really weren't that great for me. They didn't do it for the roles they're supposed to play. Maybe the casting should have been the other way around or something? I'm hoping Pam just shows up somewhere! If the critics are under 40, they need to take a step back. It could be that they have such a bias in favor of reality TV trash that they have no idea of what existed before on television. While many may care what Snooki or the Kardashians do–I could not care less. Many of us long for something more entertaining to watch on TV. I watched Dallas on TNT last night, and I agree that there are so many plots, I had to take a step back and try to count them. So far, all but two of the cast members are crooked. The show is not about, nor was it intended to be about who has the biggest boobs for the biggest rear ends; nor is it about airheads with no talent who flitter around whining about problems that nobody cares about. Seemingly, the show, as before is really the Corleone family in Texas vs. NY. I hope the new show does not get cancelled. For those who know what I mean when I say the Corleone family–more power to us because we know what makes a good drama.

Watched all of the old series. Watched again last night. I really could care less about what the professionals thought. If they like what is on in prime time today that just makes my case. There is not a single show for the past year on prime time that I watch. The reruns on some of the channels have better suited me. I one minus for the new Dallas and this shows my age. There were more plots put forth than my old brain could follow. KEEP DALLAS GOING-I'LL BE THERE EACH WEDNESDAY NIGHT

Are the critics jealous? Is someone paying them off? I LOVED THE SHOW and it was good to see JR back in action. Remember how dirty he used to be and always with a smile? Well he's right back and now that it's 2012 the network will probably have no holds barred. I can't wait for Cliff Barnes to show up and be tortured. He and JR were like Wil E. Cayote and the Road Runner! TNT should have another winner!

LOVED IT! As usual the critics only see what they want to see. Its a show you will love to hate-the good, the bad and the ugly. But I do agree without the original stars I doubt that the young actors would carry the show very long-but they may improve and mature in their roles with the help of the originals -I am optmistic – I certainly will stay with it for awhile as long as J.R. and Bobby are a part of it and also glad to see some of the other originals. Can't wait to see who gets backstabbed and doublecrossed next!

Seeing as how i'm not over 40, i was born and raised in Texas, and i live in the DFW area, i cringed when i saw the preview tags about this show coming back. I think i heard my husband dry heaving next to me as well. Maybe they should bring back gilligan's island instead... Oh wait, that's survivor. Bewitched? No, no, that was eastwick – it didn't do too well either. Dynasty is the real housewives of (blank). It goes on and on. The sad thing is that the only original programming going on right now is in cartoons. Really really sad.

Wrong! Even cartoons plots are not original. It's all been done before. When channel surfing through movies, I noticed most are either about romance, murder, kidnapping, cheating, heists/robbing, etc. There are only so many plots.

Why on earth do some people want Victoria Principal back? She is a snob and doesn't want to return. Add to the fact that Andy Gibb committed suicide because she refused to help him. We don't want her on the show. Actually, Dallas is a show about beautiful people with the exception of JR. That being said, Patrick Duffy and Victoria Principal no longer belong, as quite frankly, their looks have gone to hell. Linda Gray, on the other hand, is still beautiful and definitely is an asset to the new Dallas.

Andy Gibb did not commit suicide, he died of a heart related condition due to drug use and illness. I personally I do not like Victoria Principle, but she was a huge part of the original show.If she does not want to return, that is her loss, Bet enough money could get her back, though. All she does anymore is push her cosmetics.

Wasn't overly thrilled with the intro credits, but the show had great twists and turns... Would love to see Cliff Barnes back in the picture running Ewing Oil (as John Ross mentioned) – And just some good info, Pam was never officially declared dead. She crashed Bobby's red mercedes into a gas tanker truck, disappeared from the hospital after surgery, and later –> Cliff Barnes found her during the 12th season premiere, with a different appearance due to plastic surgery (which also doubled as an explanation for Margaret Michaels portraying the role rather than Victoria Principal). She reveals to her brother Cliff that she is happy in her new life and plans to marry her doctor. Later, after Cliff leaves, her fiance asks why she didn't tell Cliff that she has a terminal disease and only has a year to live. Though this was the character's final appearance in the series, Pam has never been declared dead on the show. Looking forward to some more Dallas on TNT!

It was great! John Ross and Christopher are even better looking than their dads when they were younger. The plot line is good and the characters are well cast. We don't need Victoria Principal, but Ken Kercheval would be nice to call back. He is one great actor. I don't think we need Patrick Duffy in it, but Linda Gray definitely needs to be in it. Also, they need to fix the opening credits. They don't look good and have no pictures. Perhaps go back to the old way. Don't think you can improve on those old opening credits much. I agree with other posts- I loved the show and it's a nice change from all of the REALITY SHOWS that are taking over every channel now. It's good to see a plot thicken and for JR to experience the same kind of trickery he used to play on everyone else that crossed his path. I was however, sad not to see Bobby's original wife on there. Although the new chick plays her part very well. The only people who wouldnt like this version are the idiots who watch Bigbrother or Survivor.
While true that the true fans were looking for more of the same old Dallas, there is enough being setup to make this a vialable .and definatley better than some of the other shows on cable and of course not as good as others.

I wouldnt expect a hit here, but definately a show that will entertain.
Note that its gonna take more than 1-2 episodes to setup a show such as this even with it
carrying over the original stories and etc..

Naturally without the original JR this show would be toast.
But one can groom a new JR, if JR junior can muster it.

Really enjoyed it but not surprised the "critics" panned and disliked the show. We want to see what we the people want to see not what a bunch of "critics" want to see which is obvious by the majority of the comments out here. Many times really good and entertaining shows get cancelled while trash stays on for years. Anybody remember back when "critics" said how horrible "The Sound of Music" was yet was a huge block buster with the people at the time and won 5 Academy Awards and still is a treasure today. "Critics" now almost embarrassingly admit they disliked it now. Thank you TNT and Dallas!!!

I agree with everyone here – except for like 2 or 3 boneheads – that the show was awesome last nite. Both the pilot and the second episode had me engaged from the get go.

What I loved best was that they kept the intro song pretty much intact. It brought back a rush of memories from my childhood in the '80s (i'm 37 now). Friday nights at my house in those days were set in stone: it was always pizza night (2 homemade pies made by my Mom) with The Dukes of Hazard followed by Dallas on CBS. What happened to television like that???

It's obvious to me – judging by what I've read by my fellow brethren here – that the American television viewing audience is craving family dramas like Dallas, Dynasty, Falcon Crest and Knots Landing again. You don't have to go and reboot all these shows but people want that family drama formula I mean. And it's obvious the public is sick of the mindless crap of reality tv.

That said, I think the reboot and success of the new Hawaii 5.0 started this trend, and I hope tv execs are paying close attention.

Lastly, the critics are like the judges on those mindless crap reality tv: useless. It's up to us – the viewers – to keep Dallas 2.0 going. We have all the power!

    Thanks TNT.

Updated Dallas is about as entertaining as watching paint dry! I couldn't get past the extremely cheesy glances exchanged between the guests at the first family dinner scene. I'd lost intrest in the original series and found nothing redeeming in either of the first two episodes to keep me interested. The writers may want to consider less kitch and more suspense. One more thing, Larry Hagman PLEASE TRIM THOSE MUTANT EYEBROWS!!!! GROSS!!!!!

I agree with John. Television was invented to ESCAPE reality and what do the "know it all" programmers do but bombard us with it 6 days out of 7!!!!!

While it didn't have the dramatic punch that the original "Dallas" brought to the audience, I liked it and think it will improve with time. One of the things that would make it much better is to have Cliff Barnes son battling it out with J.R's son. That rivalry was one of the dramatic overtones of the show.

I have to say I got bored with it, and wound up changing channels. It should really be called 'Dallas, The Next Generation'. The plots are the same, and after a 21 year hiatus, too predictable. Maybe all the reality TV with its hyped up drama has put a bad taste in my mouth.

Pretty Good show. I really thought John Ross would end up in the pool when Christopher went after him, after all, that was tradition at Ewing parties. I also thought they would address the 'ancestry' of the 'cousins' Maybe later. MOST OF ALL. – WHY ONLY 9 EPISODES????????.

OMG – absolutely the worst show ever
Acting: horrible, comical, accents a joke. You could not make up a stroy of how bad it played.
Script: was this written by an adult? Couldn't be any worse
Set Design: ugly sets, not in the least bit convincing, bad lighting
Sound: Couldn't understand half the dialogue, music was just plain awful
I predict half a season and gone for ever. Too bad, they could have had a goldmine.

The critics are nuts. Television went over the top with boring reality and talent shows and then when something like the new Dallas comes along they think it sucks? The people are craving some real ENTERTAINMENT as opposed to a constant stream of boring and cheaply produced reality and talent shows and the new Dallas delivers. 2 Thumbs UP.

The critics just want something trashy...like most TV soap operas. Dallas is (and mostly always was) classy, and it's great to have it back. The show was at its best when it focused on family, and that's exactly what the new Dallas seems to be doing. I, for one, thought it was great!

I wonder if some of these "critics" were even old enough to remember the original TV series. They are probably so used to "reality TV", they couldn't spot a good dramatic TV series if it fell right on top of them. Hopefully, the viewers will keep this show alive and not depend on the "critics" view.

Give it time. I loved the show back then and loved the new version.
they needed to keep it original to keep the attention of fans of the original. They need more of the original actors if you ask me.
Once they are able to establish a viewership they can certainly update the writing to more current issues and make it more appealing to all.
As someone who grew up watching this show I'm glad it had that familiar feel. I hope it lasts long enough to appease these picky critics. Good thing they don't decide what shows make it and what shows don't. Viewers decide that. And hopefully the viewers will give this one a chance.

Enjoyed it, but let's face it, 90% of the enthusiasm here is nostalgia. If this was a new show people would have been saying, "What a bunch of bland young people! Totally uninteresting." Hagman was good as always, but my guess is any young person who has no nostalgia for the old 'Dallas' flipped the channel after the first hour. As a trip down memory lane, perfectly acceptable (the theme song is still great). As a new show? Nothing to offer. Still, the 40+ crowd will probably make it a summer hit.

Viewers should never lean to or listen to critics. We should never shape our interests to fit the opinions of others. It seems the critics collaborated to form a unified statement...which may have been bought. Somethings have no need to be technical or even factual, just entertaining. I'm a huge fan of Dallas from back in the day. I just watched the pilot and I thought it was very well done. I cant recall why Bobby isn't married to Pam, but the show would seem more true to form with her in it. It's not that Bobby's current wife isn't a good fit-Its merely that theres still a very old feud at work here, and Pam and Sue Ellen always had an interesting dynamic around it. Pam was also more in Miss Ellie's corner than Sue Ellen ever was, so the show could use her position. Other than that, I think it's definitely going to get good!

Also - looking forward to more scenes in the "house" - and hope the layout is similar with the living room and dining room (some great fights in those rooms - just for the "family").

Outdated? Alternative energy vs. Big Oil - maybe I'm outdated (at 30!) but I thought that was a pretty relevant topic!

I'm so glad that decided to do a continuation of the story and not a remake! I thought they did a great job of weaving the old with the new. It was great to see the old characters (and yes, Pam and Cliff Barnes were missed but I hear Cliff is going to be recurring) - as soon as JR spoke to John Ross, I actually said out loud, "He's back!" because I knew we had a show to watch! I also love that they are using the old theme song, it brought up such good memories of sitting on my grandmother's living room floor eating a homemade snack and watching with her!

The new characters for the most part are a nice continuation. Josh Henderson is perfect as the next JR Ewing. A few of the other actors were a bit forced but IT IS A PILOT, so I'm hoping that shakes out over time. Plus it is a Soap - I hope the critics weren't expecting Shakespeare!

I loved it and hope the rest of the season/series is as good as the first 2 episodes!

Only issues I had with the show was..

    1. They tried to cram too many plots into 1 episode. I was getting lost in the first 30 minutes.

    2. Patrick Duffy is still as boring as he was 20 years ago. I don't think he is ever going to grab anyone's attention.

    3. The sons were...at least in my mind..trying too hard to be villans. The guy that played John Ross I could tell was overacting at times trying to look and sound evil.

Other than that..all in all...it's going to have me watching each week.

"Loved it". So many plots were sown. I can't wait until the next episode.
Larry Hagman was great, as he always has been. J R is a step ahead of
      everyone. As he always was.

When I was a kid, I used to watch Dallas with my mom so I grew up with the show and have a soft spot for it. I was skeptical about this version of Dallas, but I enjoyed the two episodes on the whole. A nice blend of old & new cast and it felt comfortable to watch as a continuation of the Dallas story.

Great show and the critics are so lame. Most of them would know a good show if it hit them in the face. Acting was terrific and writing was right on.

What do the critics know? I loved Dallas and I will continue to watch. Jr, Bobby and faces from the past were the best

I watched all 13 seasons of the original Dallas and loved every minute of it. I agree with one writer here. I think many of the critics are wrong. I will sum up my feeling about the new Dallas in one word.. AWESOME! I will continue to watch, for sure! I loved it!

Actually not as bad as I thought it would be. At first I said they are really desperate to put this on. But after being a loyal watcher back in it's heyday it kind of picks up where they left off. Now there will be a whole new generation of battling relatives. I think it will work eventually. For those who have watched before they will go right along with it. For those who never watched it, they will pick it up fast enough. Besdies there is nothing else good on Wednesday's. I will watch it.

Sorry but these critics don't know what they are talking about, and I agree with Steven Day that the critics are useless. The new Dallas nailed it. I was happy that they kept the original theme song and fused the old generation with the new. JR is something else. Contrary to the critics' opinion, Dallas has a huge fan base. Their idea of good television is probably reality shows. I I can't wait for the next episode.

I loveit. There are inconsistanties! In the original JR found out he had an adult son. Jame Richard (JR). So he, not John Ross is the 1st born grandson, and James had a son. JR also has a son with Cally, that he did not raise. That son would be in his early 20s. Bobby also has a son with Jenna. (Lucas) he would be in his mid 20 to late 20's. Would love to see these characters make some noise too!!! Can't wait for next week.

I really liked the new Dallas! So much that I stayed up until 1 am watching it. I am glad they included some history in it. If you have seen the original you will remember and if you are new to the show you get the backstory. Loved it and I will be watching it faithfully. Not only that John Ross (Josh) and Christopher (Jesse) are very easy on the eyes! Why not watch? Always a nice escape to reality...

For years i had hoped this show would come back. And i have to say i loved it. They did a great job!! SOOO many times they try to redo an older show and it just seems like it never works, The way they did this show is a winner, if anyone is taking notice and is planing on bringing back any other shows,,,,, do it like this. This allows you to pick up the old fans and a world of new!! Its the best comeback i have seen so far.

I was a fan of the original show and actually had dinner at South Fork Ranch as part of an oil explorer's convention in 1982. The reviewers obviously missed the mark as the new show nailed it. I bet most of the reviewers weren't even born when the old show aired. I thoroughly enjoyed it, warts and all. It was as if no time had elapsed between this series and the last one – except for all those wrinkles! MORE! MORE!

I wonder what the average age of these "entertainment experts" is and if they know
anything beyond reality shows and sitcoms with foul-mouthed middle school kids.
