'Dallas' returns: What's the verdict? After 21 years, "Dallas" returned to primetime Wednesday night on TNT just as outlandish and over-the-top as ever. But for some TV critics, that's not a compliment. The show is essentially picking up where it left off, with Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy reprising their roles as J.R. and Bobby Ewing, respectively. ( Linda Gray's Sue Ellen is back as well.)
In this new version, the older Ewings have spawned a new generation, with Josh Henderson playing the son of J.R., John Ross, and "Desperate Housewives'" Jesse Metcalfe portraying Bobby's adopted son Christopher. This time around, John Ross is the oil-hungry Ewing while Christopher plans to make use of alternative energy sources. TNT stayed close to familiar territory with its updated version and the fight over Southfork is still going strong. Yet while that may please returning fans, it could also make "Dallas" feel outdated, Salon points out in its review. "The new 'Dallas' isn't even entertaining," and "could not feel more irrelevant," the review critiques. "To the best of its ability, the original 'Dallas' was modern, not to mention playful and salacious, whereas the new 'Dallas' is a flat reanimation of an out-of-date format." Although USA Today also found "Dallas'" return to be wholly needless, the review did give kudos to Larry Hagman. Calling the return of the former characters "the only wise decision the show's re-creators [made]," the review adds that Hagman was, "as always ... in a class by himself." Too bad, the review noted, that he returned in an "embarrassing throwback" without anything fresh to offer. The Hollywood Reporter was just unimpressed with TNT's "Dallas" revival, warning that even the nostalgic shouldn't revisit this long-running soap. "This is pandering of the lowest kind," THR says in its review. "The writing is brutal and obvious, the acting is comical, and none of it is bettered by the directing ... 'Dallas' is terrible." But the New York Post suggests that the familiar backstabbing and betrayal will win you over eventually, saying in its review that the new "Dallas" is "more ridiculous, campier, more preposterous and so totally over the top that it's skirting insanity," counting those as reasons to love the updated spin. Entertainment Weekly also found the new "Dallas" to be "a rare example of an artistically successful TV-classic update." TNT's version has its flaws, but overall, it's still a "solidly constructed soap," "wooden dialogue, oily plot twists" and all. TNT is owned by the parent company of CNN. What'd you think of "Dallas'" return? |

Hi there, I discovered your site by the use of Google even as searching for a similar topic, your site got here up, it seems great. I've bookmarked to favourites|added to bookmarks.
Pretty portion of content. I just stumbled upon your website and in accession capital to say that I acquire actually loved account your weblog posts. Any way I'll be subscribing in your feeds or even I fulfillment you get right of entry to constantly quickly.
Critics don't give bonafide facts. They give their opinions, which to me, add up to nothing. I agree that they should find another line of work. I think that the show is fantastic!! They have updated it, yet kept it familiar with the lead stars. It's so disappointing that we have to wait until 2013 for the next season.
I remember Dallas back in the 80's along with Dynasty remember that Show? The new version is interesting because they are focusing on the new generation...The era with Miss Ellie, Jock and the other characters that's all in the past...People need to stop "living in the past"...The feuds may not be exact as in the original but and take into consideration that most of those characters are either dead or way too old to reprise their roles...Jr. is still awesome and I like Bobby's spunk and regardless of age he can still "Kick ass"....
Actually, I liked it once I got to know the new characters. John Ross, Christopher, etc. Of course I love the old characters. JR, Bobby, etc When will there be new episodes?
Whoever says its updated...needs a brain transplant.
I was not at all disappointed! Would have liked to see Victoria Principal again,
however Bobby's new wife is growing on me. I thought the writers and actors are doing a great job and it is holding my interest. Love that Larry Hagman & Patrick Duffy! Love the suspense! Seems like any professional critics who
bad mouth the show need to talk to the viewers. I haven't spoken to anyone who doesn't like it!
Why viewers still use to read news papers when in this technological globe all is existing on net?
I love the New Dallas! It was great hearing the return of such an iconic show. In a world filled with relaity show this and that, finally a show with actors who have a script to memorize! Love it!!!1 TNT Rocks!!!!
I love the new show too. I needed a replacement for Desperate Housewives for the juicy, scandalous nonsense that I love. I would however like a better cast of women. I like Bobby's wife ( Brenda Strong) and thank God they brought back Linda Grey. Dallas had a variety of southern belles in the day and this new cast of women is like a bad soap at noon. I want the big hair and southern charm that goes with 1970's-80's Dallas. Maybe get some of the cast of GCB that was cancelled, they were true, fun southern woman. LOVE LARRY HAGMAN! He is still the man!
I love love love the new show. I am glad they brought it back. I can't wait til the next week to watch. I am hooked!
Some people may think that Dallas is a old and out dated show but not me I'm 33 years old and really young at the time of the first show which I look at with my mom I think bringing Dallas back on the air in up to date times with the same story lines where it pick up where the old one left off isn't just genius but it gives the new generation a chance to understand some of what Dallas was all about keep it running long as you can
The original was campy, over-the-top, "guilty pleasure" fare. Not sure what the critical reviewers are remembering. I'm enjoying the new version, although I believe you get more out of it with knowledge of the original.
Love the show!!!
Loved it same old j.r. and bobby although I think Pam needs to come back if only for a visit Pam and bobby just go together.
I was thinking all day Wed. about the show DALLAS. Couldn't wait to see it. I haven't felt that way about any show for a long time. Great writers. DALLAS was always full of suprises, still the same; so yeah, I believe Pam will make a "great entrance"! LOL
One thing: PAM IS COMING BACK!! If you look up Dallas on IMDB they even have her listed as part of the cast. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005492/
She will be here soon so hold on!!
That theme song has been playing in my head all week!! We loved the new Dallas I enjoyed the fact that my kids sat and watched it with us just like I did with my parents who are no longer here.
LOVED the new Dallas.
Great job of picking up where we left off so many years ago.
Hurray to TNT for bringing back a classic with vengeance and style!
Thoese critics are way off base ! The show was a great return of the original with all the new up to date things that really go on in peoples lives with another generation. The critics are really screwed up and just need to keep their mouth shut if they don't have anything positive to say.Critics yea, but not everybody that has a job even a critic, wich by the way is a "JOB" sometimes don't do their JOB right and do a BAD JOB at it.Thats what they did here " A BAD JOB " creteeking it ! Ediots they are !!! LOL LOL LOVE DALLAS !
I agree.....the critics are way off base......I watched the show when I was younger and I am really enjoying the show now......the critics have nothing better to do than to say bad things about the show......
I loved the new "Dallas" more the mos of the original one. It was extremely well done, and didn't stray so far from the original it would offend older fans and kept it modern enough to appeal to a whole new generation. The negative critics can go fly a kite, we don't care what you think. TNT did a fantastic job on it. Now, I hope they do the same with "Dynasty" soon.
So J.R shooting himself at the end of the first Dallas was also a dream?
No. JR didnt shoot himself.. it was not shown..just a gunshot was heard and there were three subsequent movies re-unions which reunited the cast and continued the storyline beyond the original series. So no, JR did not shoot himself in the series final ending.. it was a classic cliffhanger or Did He or Didn't He
loved it-the critics are just haters. Plain old haters!
I absolutely loved it!!! Can't wait till next week!
I, William, watched religiously & loved old Dallas! I was so excited when I read Dallas was returning on TNT. So much so, I had my partner, Steve, watch every episode from beginning to end by dvd. He became fascinated & addicted to Dallas too. The first 2 episodes of Dallas are completely satisfying. The new cast & old cast are great. I believe that in 2012 this is what each one of them might be doing. The original was great & the new is very, very good. It's so nice to have my fave show back on tv.
I am Really REally enjoying the return of Dallas!!!! JR & Bobby are spot on! bring back Pam!!!
Although I did find it to lack the excitement I was hoping it would have, the entire set up is quite enjoyable. It definitely came to life once JR was walking around and sputtering his great one liners. I can't wait til he puts his son, John Ross, in his place.
But I wish it just made me want to watch more. i will stick around for the next episode, as well as the following but if the pace and the enormity of the stories still around than I might wait til the cliffhanger to see if I will stick around for more. I found it to be well acted but the writing was a bit lame to say the least. I wanted Sue Ellen to be more of a force in John Ross' life than she seems to be and I love that she is on top BUT DO NOT want her running for political office because those stories BORE me to tears on soaps. As for Bobby and Ann, I can see them fitting perfectly into the Miss Ellie and Clayton roles while JR will always be JR and now he will have a little bit of Jock in him.
As for John Ross and Christopher and the actors playing them, I like them. I think you get a feeling of who they are and who their dads are. John Ross' girlfriend (chris' ex-gf) is a bit thin on development and which she had more interaction with her mother, the ewing maid. It would be nice to see that dynamic played out as it would reenforce the old "Barnes-have nots" to the Ewings-have all connection to the old show. Christopher's new wife is a bit too generic for me and I really am not too interested in who she and her brother really are because I just don't think in the end it will be SHOCKING. I wish that the mysteries were with the TRUE cast and not the ones I can see gone by season 2.
All in all, I'm glad Dallas is back on TV if only to reenforce what REVENGE showed that soap operas are a genre that never dies but needs to be reinvented. Daytime needs to take a page from this book before it;s too late to do so.
I agree with you 100% The young women characters are very weak. Everyone else is great!
I absolutely loved it! The Ewings have evolved exactly as a real family would over a period of 25 years. I've always been a fan, and I can't wait until the next episode airs. JR is still the Devil that I love to hate!
Critics are off base! It was great and Hagman was outstanding!!! I guess when everyone is watching it and ratings are high the critics will have to eat their hats (Stetsons, I mean!)
I NEVER missed an episode of the first one and I sure won't be missing any of the new version. Love, love, love it!!
I loved it! JR is still the meanest and I missed it. I think it will do well especially in the summer with all these stupid reality shows and repeats. Cant wait to see it next week. Oh and yes please bobby dye your hair just a bit LOL Great job TNT
Yes its great to see Dallas back mixing the old with the new. While your at it you might suggest to bring back another David Jacobs television show "Knotts Landing".............!!!
Stupid, Sad, Tragic, Desparate, Ridiculous, Not GoingThere, So Sad!
Just like the Trashdashian Family! Aha Moment, Everyone Rich Person Pimps Their Kids, History Repeats in Real World.
The theme: super to hear it after all of these years. Chills? Yep, just like the old days.
Cast well picked. However, does anyone remember who Ann was in the old series? I can't remember her, except that I understand that she might have gone out with Cliff Barnes once. Wish they'd have fleshed that one character out in the intro a little bit more.
Pam? Well, I read in Entertainment Weekly that she was asked to join the cast and she declined. It seems that she wanted her privacy. Not sure why she'd not want to jump at this opportunity, but I guess folks change/move on.
Kept looking for Cliff. Now, those scenes will be incredible to watch.
As for Hagman, Duffy and Gray? They look marvelous. And, Hagman, who is 80 and had recently been diagnosed with cancer in real life, did not miss a beat in reprising his roll. Still a snake in the grass. Loved the walker scene, "Look and watch." Gray is still gorgeous (remember, she is not a 20-30 something). Duffy is still that lovable self.
Did not think that Tilton looked that good myself. Just because you are short and over 50, does not mean you have to look dumpy. Sorry, Charlene! I'm not dissing you. My Momma was 81 when she died. She was 5'2" and a fashion plate. Not overweight and very well put together. Just find folks who will inspire you.
Oh, back to Dallas! I really loved the show and look forward to watching more episodes. I think that it is refreshing to watch something like this now. There are too many reality shows. Who cares who goes out with a star guy? How many ways do we have to have to show folks in unsavory light?
So, that's my diatribe. Pardon my indulgence.
Yay! Watched it Thursday night- and love that they are re-running it so I DVR'd it again. I love that it is not a re-make. Bought back fun childhood memories. I'm surprised my mom would let me watch it so young, looking back, lol!
TNT, thanks! But please bring back Pam! I loved that Charlene Tilton was on- do more with her character. Dye Bobby's hair a bit- he's still handsome. JR's eyebrows really need a trim- badly. Linda Gray looks great- good for her! I bet her and JR reconcile- AGAIN!?!
Fun summer viewing. Critics can say what they want- it's us viewers who are spreading the buzz that will keep it on air.
FYI, I'm WELL under 40, I wasn't even born when it premiered but remember it from the 90's. A whole new demographic will enjoy it like their parents did! I liked the facebook page- I strongly reccomend anyone fuzzy on details of the original to check it out- it gave me lots of back info I'd never know otherwise.
I was not impressed. I give it one season tops. No time was spent on developing the characters. The thing that made Dallas a hit was everyone loved or hated the characters. It was fun. Here we dont even get to learn anything about them before they start to back stab each other. I think this show needs to go away. Leave us with the fond memories of the old show.
I loved it!!! I can't wait until next week!
I watched Dallas in its heyday and became a faithful viewer/fan. I had always hoped they would replay the original series/episodes or return with some sort of similar show. This new one helps fill that wish. I consider this a MOST Excellent Effort at blending the old series with the new. GOOD JOB TNT!!! NOW PLEASE BRING BACK the ORINGINAL DYNASTY or A NEWER VERSION OF IT!! THEN I WOULD REALLY BE IN HEAVEN!!! COME ON TNT GIVE US SOME MORE! GIVE US WHAT WE WANT!!!! We are SICK Of the REALITY and TALENT SHOW JUNK that WE ARE BEING ABUSED WITH NOW!! FINALLY SOMEONE IS LISTENING!!!
As a die hard fan of 70/80s Dallas I wax excited to see the Dallas on Wed evening. I was not disappointed at all. So glad to see J.R. back in the saddle again. It was like a class reunion seeing the old characters. Good luck to the new actors and actresses as well. I can't wait until next week!
As a die-hard Dallas fan in the 70s and 80s, I wasn't disappointedi n the new Dallas. I loved it when JR came out of his catatonic state and had those old twinking eyes that we all know and love. I can't wait until next week!
For the lack of authentics, how about them drilling an oil well with a "pulling" unit. That dog don't hunt, folks! They could have spent a little more money and got a real drilling rig. I laughed every time I saw that oil drilling sequence.
I must say that I am so glad that television is getting away from reality TV! I so miss the "Soap" tyrp shows.....welcome REAL TV and Dallas!
I loved it just as I did when I watched the original shows! I can't wait for the next episode! Keep 'em coming!
DITTO! Loved it. But isn't htere a single, nice, honest person on the show besides Ann, Bobby's wife? Or is everyboy going to be a crooked villan?
I have to say that the remake is just as good if not better than the original. I was just a kid when dallas was on and I loved it then and now seeing the new dallas I know why! My children loved the new show as well! So for all you haters out there, GO AWAY and watch your reality TV. which by the way I think there is too much of it going on now days. It's nice to watch something fictional for a change. Well i know there are all those dr shows, and criminal mind shows blah blah blah, but i dont like those to much. However, Family drama I LOVE! Kinda wish they didnt get rid of brothers and sisters, I loved that show as well.... oye!
Loved, loved, loved the new Dallas and I am so happy that they are using the original Dallas theme. These critics don't know what the hell they are talking about. What? A little PO'd because it's not another stupid reality show? Loved JR, Bobby and Sue Ellen. Can't wait until next Wednesday night. Keep the episodes coming. I know we will not be disappointed. The scowl look on JR's face at the end of part 2 was absolutely priceless. Now if only they would bring back a new updated Dynasty. Well done...we be watching EVERY EPISODE!!!! 🙂
I watched all of the original episodes in the 80's and absolutely loved it. Feel the same about the new show. Glad to see the original characters of JR, Bobby and Sue Ellen back in the show. Can't wait to see what happens next week. The critics don't know what they are talking about. The show is GREAT!!.
In a word, WOW! The show returning after 20 years came back like 'gang-busters'. My wife and I looked at each other after the 2 hours were over with and I said, 'Wish I did not have to wait till next week!"
I think the show was great. I had the pleasure of watching a filming of an episode in Addison Texas back in 1988. I like the way the new producers took us back down memory lane. When the previous producers ended the show it was like taking a break while the two sons grew up. Well now the boys are grown up and the new producers are ready to continue the story in the same format which I think is successful. What a great touch bringing Ray and Lucy back. Watching the location shots on the new show brought back great memories of my visits to Dallas.
I was very young when the original Dallas aired, and I loved the show then. Watching it now, reminded me of how good it is. I love how the new generation picks up after the old generation. I love that Bobby and JR are still in it. I don't care what the critics say, this is a great show and the situations are modern. We are still struggling with the battle of oil versus other alternative fuels. Maybe now, with Christopher wanting to try and use alternative fuels and John Ross still wanting to use Oil from Southfork, information will come out that will better explain the pros and cons to both to help our younger generation have a better grasp for their future.
LazyCash43.com
Absolutely loved it!! The critics are stupid...they need to get real jobs.
Also... was great to see Ray and Lucy... didn't expect them and hope they'll be back again.
If they just had to remake this garbage. I pray that Sue Ellen's aim has improved considerably. Yick!
Watched it, loved it, will keep watching. BRAVO TNN!!
The beginning of Dallas is beautifully done! Fly over aerial photography as in the original show. The theme song is a bit too soft, needs more POWER like the original. Liked the new Dallas a lot. Need the theme song to evolve into a bad ass biginning to the show.
LOVE IT!!!! Great cast!
I hate critics. I quess they are just waiting for the next fake "reality" show to praise. I hate reality shows, they have ruined television. So why can't we have one nighttime soap that they don't try to take off the air? I loved the orginal Dallas. Used to watch it with my mother who was murdered this year. Dallas coming back made me think about the good times with her. I thought the new show was very good. So the critics can take a flying leap.
Sorry to hear about your mother – they can't take away your lovley memories
As JR EWING would say, the critics "should never pass up an opportunity to shut the hell up!" This show is great. The new cast is great. The story is great- typical Dallas storylines, but that's why America loved the show in the first place! I know this sounds mean but I really want Sue Ellen to get drunk. Linda Gray does such an excellent job playing drunk Sue Ellen. Maybe just a quick relapse and then back to recovery? LOL
What's the verdict? I didn't watch it because I wasn't interested in the original show, and I'm certainly not interested in a remake of it.
Attention Hollywood! Write something NEW and ORIGINAL for a change.
then why are you posting?
why waste space talking about nothing?
Ditto Mallah!!!!! i couldn't agree with you more.......
Recorded Dallas, but haven't watched yet. Hope it is as good as the comments! Now TNT, here's another great show that you should bring back. "Men of a Certain Age"
CNN quotes the critics who did not like it, but actually most thought it was good. Judging from the many positive comments posted here I think this Dallas reboot is going to be around for a few seasons at least.
I watched a some of it and thought it was pretty good compared to many other evening soap type shows. The idea of reviving this show seemed pretty ridiculous, but it really surprised me.
Am I confused? I could swear that Christopher was JR's child with Kristen Shepard, Sue Ellen's sister! Bobby brought him to Southfork to confront JR after Kristen died. Before he could do that though, Pam saw the baby and thought Bobby had brought her an adopted child!! Bobby didn't have the heart to set things straight. Is this a wrong memory?
Kristin miscarried JR's baby, but soon after got pregnant again with someone else, and tried to pass Christopher off as JR's baby, but it wasn't. Christopher IS the son of Kristin Shepard and someone else, which makes Sue Ellen his aunt on the maternal side, and Sue Ellen his aunt on the adoptive side too since Bobby adopted him.
In any case this show is a winner! I really enjoyed it, and I was a fan of the old show. I usually don't like remakes but this one is very well done.
Jordan Lee, a business partner of Jock's and later JR and Bobby's, was Christopher's biological father. Kristin was blackmailing him for support also, playing all sides.
Loved it! When the opening credits came on and that awesome theme played I got chills... I'm SO happy they decided to keep the classic intro! I thought the pilot was pretty good. Did a good job of introducing the characters.. And it blended old and new really well. I was really afraid that the roles of Bobby, JR and Sue Ellen would be reduced to bit supporting parts.. I'm SO happy that they are integral characters! This show feels just like an old friend that's come to visit. And it hasn't changed a bit!
I know what you mean, Jason!! I, too, got a thrill and chills to hear that music!! It was magical after 21 years to hear it just like it was.
I agree with you. I grew up with this show. I was most curious to see how they would handle the opening credits. I had decided it wouldn't be "Dallas' without the original music. They did not disappoint us. I watched both episodes back-to-back and it really was like old friends had stopped in to visit for a couple hours. Although it is sad that "Miss Ellie" is not a part of this, I appreciated how they paid tribute to her.
I felt like a little kid the whole time because I was so excited. Thank goodness I live alone. The cats won't tell.
I was addicted to DALLAS the 1st time around and will be this time. It was awesome. There was a surprise around every corner in the show. DALLAS is Great! They sure don't make shows like this any more. All the reality crap, remakes that very seldom make it long, will never live up to DALLAS. JR, Bobby and Sue Ellen are looking real good and the suspense of the whole clan is back. JR is just getting started. Beware. I do miss Pam, wish she was back in it. (Miss Ellie & Jock to) however, I know they passed away. They were great tho. They need to show it on Friday nites at 8pm tho. Dallas is #1. Go Dallas!
THANK GOD ITS NOT ANOTHER REALITY SHOW!!!! I'm a fan of the original Dallas and simply loved the reboot ! I will be watching every week.
Wow, after reading most of the comments, I'm really glad I dvr'd it. (Now I just need time to watch it!)
Absolutely FANTASTIC!...I assume they will eventually phase out the older Ewings and give bigger deeper parts to the young ones. There were so many twists that you are going to have to keep watching to see which twist wins. We will continue to watch... Loved it.
Typical critics – they can't ever bring themselves to praise a soap. How is this show any more campy than Desperate Housewives was? Dallas was never my favorite back in the day, but I did enjoy it, and with nothing else to watch this summer, I was pleased to know I'd have this to look forward to. I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. It's pure guilty pleasure. Were there some uneven spots? Of course - hello, it was the first episode. Most shows take at least a season to gain their footing. Also, I think the hand wringing over the original castmembers carrying most of the weight is unwarranted. I would expect over time, once the younger characters are fleshed out, become more established, and people become invested in them that the success or failure of the program will not hinge entirely on Larry Hagman (who WAS brilliant, in fact). Duffy was a pleasure as always, and Linda Gray really looks fantastic.
The only thing that could make this even better for me is if Donna Mills makes an appearance or two or twelve as Abby. In fact, if Dallas turns out to be a smash, maybe the producers would consider resurrecting Knots. I would hardly know what to do with myself. That show was Pure. Soap. All. The. Time.
It was fun and enjoyable- but tell John Ross to get rid of the fake Texas accent. I am from Texas- and it doesn't sound real from a cosmopolitan city like Dallas. Larry Hagman pulled it off years ago but for today- get rid of the redneck southern accent.
I said the same thing about his accent! So I was especially surprised to learn that Josh Henderson was born in Dallas!
Larry Hagman is from Texas
I thought it was great. I watched every episode from age 10 through age 23 (seriously) and I am not expecting this to be like the original. How can you? It's an updated contemporary version of the show. It's the next generation, no more no less. Old school fans should not come into this expecting it to be like the old. Period.
I wish I was a writer on the show because I know a good storyline that would shock everyone! How many of you all remember the Wes Parmalee storyline of 1986?
It wasn't bad. However, it was NOTHING like the old Dallas. It just couldn't touch it. My thing is I hope this is just a mini-series because Larry Hagman doesn't look like he can hold on for to much longer. That man is sick and old and needs to just chill, but he makes the show...the first one and this one so witout him there is no Dallas. The young characters are flat and they have no depth...true new age actors. Straight Hollywood. The old Dallas actors were real hardworking no so pretty yet pretty rough but not so rough cowboys but not really cowboys but played damn good cowboys type actors. It was so real given the time when acting was more about the art than about the money and how good you look. I will watch just because JR is a Hoot. Bobby didn't look bad either but they have aged and moving a little slow which is kind of sad to see because I remember when they were young and vibrant and seeing them on screen as old men ain't cute. I will keep watching and hoping it gets better.
I'm old Dallas die hard, and the critiques can say what they want, I thought it was great. JR is still his old double crossing out guessing self. JR still makes the show, even at his age he was great, sure hope they keep him in the shows heavily in the shows to come. I thought they did a pretty good job inter-mixing the old with the new. And Bobby, no matter what nice things JR told him you could see it in Bobby's eyes, he wasn't totally buying it. ha. Great change of pace show, so tired of TV taking the cheap way out and going with all reality shows. Thanks TNT.
It was as good as anything else that's on TV right now. Held my interest. I coming back for more. Keep up the good work guys. I'm with ya!
BTW........was that an Adele tune playing in the background? It was good whatever it was.
What would be cool (for us Baby Boomers and Gen X'rs who grew up watching this) is flashbacks of certain relevant scenes from back in the day, weaved cleverly in the story. Kinda gives us "old school" watchers a "remember when" and enriches the interest of new watchers (who doesn't want to see a young J.R., Sue Ellen, Bobby, etc.). It makes it kinda fun.
JR has to stay in order for Dallas to be successful. He is just as cunning as always. Ya gotta love (or hate) the guy or a bit of both. There is no one else like him. I will continue to watch the series to see where it goes. Who cares what the critics say. I was a big Dallas fan years ago and hope this new series will develop into something just as good.
JR is the best!!!
Love every minute of it. Characters are great and LOVE J.R. and Bobby! I will be looking forward to Dallas next week.
JR has to stay on Dallas. He is just as cunning as he was in the early Dallas. Ya gotta love him! I will continue to watch this to see where it goes. I enjoyed last night's premiere and look forward to the future episodes.
My friend got me into it,was fantastic enjoy JR walker scene, and the end when he said you have to meet my son when realized wrong Marta,Can not wait for next week. As a person of 71 years and working 3 jobs Its nice to see them back at it again not quitting like me and enjoy life!!!!!!!!
Ken Kercheval will reprise the role of Cliff Barnes in episodes 3, 4, and 10 of upcoming shows.
Obviously, the critics weren't fans of the first 'Dallas'. My husband is not a "soapy" guy, but he actually said he will tune in next week. I like the idea that the all the scenes in the new Dallas are filmed on location at various places in and around Dallas. The last couple of seasons of the old Dallas were mostly filmed in a studio somewhere. You can tell the new one is filmed on location and real. Thanks TNT for bringing back 'JR' and the Ewing clan. I agree with one of the posts earlier, get rid of so many of the "reality" shows. We all know who can dance, sing and give a good laugh, we all live everyday in reality, we want to be entertained and not view people's lives like looking through and peep hole.
loved JR's eye brows.
One thing I do want to see is Cally and JR's son come back to South Fork to stir it up. Am I correct- didn't they have a son who moved away with Mom? I might be mixing up memories from my childhood but either way, I'm soooo pumped for this show. 🙂 Love the opening credits music too, glad they didn't change it too much. I'm not too embarrassed to say that it still gives me GOOSEBUMPS and I'm 28 now. Lol. Love it 😛
That was JR's son with Vanessa Beaumont (Season 13 I think).
JR had a daughter with Cally.
JR Ewing ( Hagman ) is still a very powerful character. There isn't anyone on TV who can come close. Coupled with
Sue_Ellen and Bobby, this is the best thing to air in many, many years ( that doesn't have some stupid singing and/or
dancing theme ). The John_Ross character is another story - why the "punk", angry young man act ( or is this guy
just a very shallow actor ) ??? Everyone else I'll get used to ( even though there's a decided "Latin" influence that I assume comes from Los Angeles that the rest of the country does not hold in high esteem ). Good Show - but kill
John_Ross off before he stinks up the whole show !!!!!
FYI Texas used to be part of Mexico and there is a lot of mexican influece in its food and culture. Read some history!!!
The exterior of the house needs updating. And, I agree with those that were disappointed in the choice of wardrobe for the scenes at the Cattle Baron's ball, those folks look as if they were browsing at North Park mall.
I don't know how many times a cliche can be thrown about before it dies an eternal death, but the writer's of the show need to reign themselves in...remember, Dallas is a wee bit more cosmopolitan these days.
Downtown screen shots were fun, but trust me, South Fork Ranch must have been cut-and-pasted with acreages from some other arena. That area of town looks nothing like this these days.
It's a good thing I'm not a native Texan; I would be hog-tied and run out of town for this...
Seriously, it was fun while it lasted, but it's time to move forward.
Enjoyed it very much, will continue to watch!
I'm among those who loved it. I'm tired of all the reality junk out there, it was nice to see an old program come back.
I enjoyed it but without Bobby & J.R. I don't think it would work as well. Gotta love mean ol' J.R.!!!
I was so excited to find out Dallas was coming back with some of the original leads.I couldn't wait until Friday night when I was young!!! I reallly enjoyed watching the new Dallas last night too, and really hope the new series succeeds. But one suggestion, I do hope the John Ross character changes a little bit. We all loved to hate, and hated to love JR because he was so charming, espiecially with that devious little smile. John Ross comes off a little bit too much of a punk, and needs to learn a little of JR's finesse.
It was great! JR hasn't missed a beat. Larry Hagman slipped right back into his role perfectly. I willl continue to watch for sure! Can't wait until next week.
To everyone who commented that Charlene Tilton ("Lucy") hasn't aged well, please be reminded that she is 54 years old now. And she's only 4'9", sorta hard to stay thin once you get to middle age when you are that short.
Well said, Terri.
It's not 1981 anymore, Lucy haters!! For a woman in her 50's, Charlene Tilton looks just fine!
My husband and I watched the original DALLAS faithfully, have – of course – visited South Fork. We both loved it. Linda Gray (Sue Ellen) hasn't changed a bit and neither has J.R. or Bobby personality-wise for that matter. We have it set to DVR from here on out! The critics are crazy! It's great!
Linda Gray looked super!
Patrick Duffy is still wonderful as Bobby!
Loved it then, love it now. Entertainment Critics should get a real job! They're worthless.
I'm not a critic, but it was sooo boring. Bailed out after 30 minutes or so.
Hagman really was the show!
I LOVED IT!!!! My son called me from east coast to remind me to watch and was excited and enjoying it.He remembered our family being loyal viewere of the original show!!.I hope the CRITICS will bite their tongues when the ratings, number of viewers prove them WRONG!! Do your Thing,New Dallas!!
I loved it. Larry Hagman was amazing-if they keep him in the show. The look in his eyes when he realized John Ross was a chip off the old block was priceless. Cant wait till next week. The critics are idiots.
The show was great and very interesting. I loved it. cant wait until next week to see what happens.I watched when the original Dallas was on years ago. I too wish Pam was back, and Cliff Barnes too. It will be interesting to see what will happen between John Ross and Christopher. Watch out for Sue Ellen too.. And why is Bobby sick?
I really enjoyed Dallas last night and I plan on watching it each week. I thought it was alot of fun!! First, I'm like "ut oh, a double cross..." Then I'm like "Oh my, a TRIPLE cross!". Then I'm like "WOW! A freakin QUADRUPLE cross!!" LOVE IT!!
I watched the show "Dallas" last night, and I loved it. The critics are wrong. I will watch all season because it looks very interesting and compelling. I have been a fan since the beginning of the show in the late 70's, when it first started. I was not disappointed.
Loved it! Watched every minute of it!!!!!!!!!!!
Dallas is back! I was a HUGE Dallas fan growing up. Watched the return last night with my mom. We had a blast.
The plot twists made my headspin but that's what we loved about Dallas. I was shocked at Charlene Tilton she didn't age well but I am glad to see her back on the show. We need her to stir up some serious mess. J.R. is my man-that is one dirty dog. Can't wait to see next week. The critics need to go and sit down somewhere. They get on my nerves! Reality TV is billion dollar honeypot. I will take a return of Dallas over most of the foolishness on reality tv anyday of the week!!!!
Thanks TNT!
I LOVED IT! Just as entertaining as the original. Can't wait for next week!! Great job TNT!
To hell with the critics!! I LOVED it!! They had well over 20 years to cover in two hours, given some time I think it'll be just as juicy and scandalous as the original. Loved seeing J.R. again, still the same old scammer he always was, and we fans wouldn't have it any other way. I also agree with the above poster who said bring back some more of the early characters, can't get enough of them.
I thought the re-boot of Dallas was GREAT. Loved it. Nice blending of young and old generations. Good amount of twists and turns in the plot, even in just the first hour. It was such a treat to see Dallas back on the air again. I'm thrilled to be able to return to the story I watched loyally for 13 years on CBS, so I'm happy TNT brought it back!
That look in JR's eyes at the end of the 2nd hour when he realized that his son is just as devious as he is, said it all.....Just like looking in the eys of Satan himself. LOVE IT!
It was great. I was disappointed by the Cattle Baron's Ball, though. Back in the old show, everyone was always dressed to the nines and dripping in diamonds. This one looked like shoppers at the mall. And I was shocked to see that Lucy has not aged well. And where is Cliff???
That is exactly what I was thinking....Don't mess with JR...then or now!!!...Loved it!!!!
These review critics don't know what the hell they are talking about that's why I take everything they say with a grain of salt.
I agree with you 100%
I absolutely loved it. I was glued to the TV in the first 5 minutes. I grew up watching Dallas and am really glad to see it back. I hope it succeeds. They should bring back more old successful series. Most of the crap on TV now (reality shows), is just that, crap.
I remember watching the old series with my folks, I was a little too young to enjoy it then but I remember it well, and I LOVED last night's episode. The one thing it might have lacked was not enough characters or storylines you care about, but really, how else are you supposed to write the first episode?! Rome wasn't build in a day- correction: Dallas wasn't built in a day!
I look forward to many seasons of good fun... Maybe they'll move it to Friday nights too- just saying. 🙂
Horrible acting and script stunk! Remember the night of the who shot Jr. Episode all tva in tbd night club where on. This makes me want to shoot the Tv! Will stick to watching baseball.
To Katie Mullins,
You are not a true "Dallas" fan. We don't need you anyways.
Courtney, I couldn't agree with you more..... As JR said "Never pass up a good opportunity to SHUT UP!!!!!!" Katie..
Courtney, I was thinking the same thing... As JR said "Never pass up a good opportunity to SHUT UP!!!!!!" Katie..
Katie,
Are you still acting?
Alicia
remake was the worst decision ever.
It was GREAT! The idiot critics don't have a clue. Bring back more of the originals though – it would be even better – Ray, Cliff, Lucy, Pam – then bring back Priscilla Presley to really stir up some trouble.
It's all a dream ...
All I kept thinking was that you don't mess with J.R. Ewing. Great show considering there is nothing else worth watching right now on television. Thanks TNT
I loved it and was not disappointed in the least. The critics in this piece have their heads up there Dallasses.
The critics are high on crack. I was a DALLAS fan back in the day and I must admit the new Dallas rocks! I was so into it last night and even watched the encore a few minutes to hear that theme music play one more time before retiring for the evening! Love JR, Love Bobby, Love Sue Ellen.....Can't wait to see Pam and Cliff ! OMG it just get better I'm sure. Shame on CBS or the other big nets not picking this show up! TNT congratulations from a media buyer of 25 years. Finally appointment television returns to America! Best, Chris
I loved it! And actually, we don't know for sure if Pam is dead or not. In the original show, the last thing that was mentioned of her was that she had some kind of disease and was expected to die, but we don't know if she did or not. Personally I hope she is, because I really like Bobby's new wife and don't need Pam to "return from the dead". I was 9 years old when the show premiered and 22 when it left the air in 1991, so this really brings back a whole bunch of nostaglia and I love, love, love that they kept the opening credits virtually the same as the original show.
I loved it too. I recorded it and started watching later. I finished around 11:30 and then TNT had a live after the show program on with the actors. I had to tear myself away because it was a work night! I'm looking forward to more!
Wasn't thrilled with the new one, liked the show 21 years ago better, Larry Hagman should cut those eyebrows they look horrible!
I agree! I thought it only so so – the music wasn't all that wonderful in this series. It would be nice if they had some good characters to aspire to... There are too many mean people in the world and we need some positive examples to aspire to...
We all loved it!
I enjoyed it! I was an avid and loyal watcher 20 years ago, and have already set my DVR to record the series each week. Even my husband sat and watched it w/me! Sounds like from the feedback i've read from the viewers vs the critics - the critics are way off!!
Loved it !!!!!! Wish John Ross, Jr. was a little older, more mature (still good though). J.R. and Bobby and Sue Ellen are still outstanding!!!
"Blood may be thicker than water, but oil is thicker than both." I LOVED IT! Looking forward to the next episodes and hoping Pam, Gary and Valene make appearances!
I LOVED IT! Watched it with my 27 yr old daughter and she did NOT get it, I thought she would like it, but she decided not to watch the second half! I thought Bobby, JR and Sue Ellen aged well, but my goodness Lucy did not, I had NO CLUE who that was, is that the same Lucy?! I plan on watching the season, it is on my DVR!!!!
I'm a little surprised there is not one bad review in the comments section. I guess I need to watch.
I live just north of Dallas - can we at least get rid of the stupid cowboy hats and boots. No one in Dallas wears this stuff.
Liked it except for the one cheezy scene where they meet on the 50 yard line in Cowboy Stadium. Who does stuff like that?
I loved the return and had waited and waited for it. I'm already looking forward to next week. My only wish is that more of the originals would be on each week – bring back Ray, Cliff, Pam, Lucy and especially bring back Priscilla Presley to stir up some trouble! The idiot review people don't know what the heck they are talking about – it is GREAT!
I was thinking the same thing!
I agree, that was just unnecessary.
If this show is good then I'm a potato! -JERSEYTOMATO 2012
LOVED IT! I'm 50 years old and I love it! People our age have the money and pay our bills. The kids have their share of reality shows, Paris, Kim K, Lindsay, etc. Keep bringing back more shows like this!! Better than the original
Loved it- so happy to see it brought back! Now, TNT, how 'bout "All My Children"? Just saying...
Loved the show, hope they can keep up the pace from last night. All the plot twists are why it was so good the first time around and last night was no exception.
Oh come on, a little bit of creativity please! Now if they had made John Ross the green loving alternative energy guy, and Christopher the capitalistic oil hungry guy.....THAT would have been entertaining! Better yet, have both JR & Bobby have had daughters as well as sons, and have them be the opposites. Way more room for drama!
It was very nice to see the brothers together again. However, I freaked out to see the level of evil and sarchasm ruling this family. It was good to watch it after quite some time. I prefer the old days though.
I loved every minute no wait every second of it. All I can say is they are back and I am glad.
Dallas was pretty good; it was great to see these characters back on television. Regardless of the critics' spite, it is much better than most of the other shows on tv–especially the glut of reality shows. Good job, Dallas!
LOVED it! Thought it was perfect blend of the old and new. Critics are either idiots or actors who couldn't cut it. Big oil vs. alternative energy isn't relevant??? Really critics, really?
Expetations were not high, I must admit, for new Dallas' return. But loved it! A new twist occuring every few minutes. Critics bombed on this one. New Dalls will give Reality TV shows a run for their money. Can't wait to tune in next week!
I don't know what show these critics were watching but it wasn't the show I watched last night. Fabulous entertainment. Loved it loved it loved it.
LOVED IT !!!!
Meant to say Josh HENDERSON!
Really enjoyed watching it with my relatives. Totally hooked. Josh Anderson is a GREAT John Ross! Follow me on Twitter @scottlara1961
Loved it!!!! They just forgot one crucial element. What is a Ewing wedding without someone landing in the pool???
I thought the exact same thing!
I was thinking the same thing last night!!!!!!!!!!!
I live 5 minutes from Southfork Ranch and have been waiting for the premiere just because I see the filming as I drive by. Based on the commercials, I thought it would be terrible. I expected pretty faces and stupid drama, but it was GOOD.
I like the different dimension in the show, oil vs. alternative, etc. The story line is also complex and with depth.
Two thumbs up. Not a perfect show, but lots of promise.
As I remember the first few episodes of the original Dallas had quite a few rough spots, but it smoothed right out, and the New Dallas will too, I think the timing was perfect to bring it back, and I will be watching it hopefully for many seasons.
The one thing a bit lacking was the humor and wit of the old series. There were a couple half decent one liners from J.R., but it's going to need more of that, especially from the younger generation.
The entertainment industry has lost creativity and is relegated to repackaging old material. Dallas was entertaining in its day but who wants to see it now. The same is true for those Marvel comic based movies.
I concur. Predictable, shallow soap. At times, almost painful. Please add some twisted muscle to an anemic plot and story line. Surprise us, dammit.
Love, love, love it! I can't wait until next Wednesday night!
FYI: To those who think that they killed Pam off, that isn't so. She was in a very bad car accident with a fuel tanker when Bobby called her on her cell phone. She didn't want anyone to see her the way she was, badlly burned and so she divorced Bobby again. The writers did not totally write Pam off. If you don't believe me, check out Wikipedia under Chirstopher Ewing.
The critics "like always" are out of touch..I loved it.
I had to strong arm my partner into watching last night. He wasn't too thrilled to have to sit through two hours of Dallas. He was still awake at 11:10, and actually said it was pretty good. I was grateful to have something to watch that didn't have tacky "real housewives", or some stupid talent show. As for the critics who panned the show and mentioned bad writing.......... maybe all of you should look for other work, you obviously don't know what you're doing. Now that "Mad Men" is over for the year, I think there might actually be something to look forward to on Wednesday night.
You and your "partner" watched it? Yuck!
It was like old times. My mother and I sat glued to the TV. I'm so excited. I even hummed the theme song. This is so much better than the other crap on TV. If they brought back Falcon Crest...NAH that would be too much. The critics don't know what they are talking about, as usual. It's on the DVR and ready each week.
I loved it!!! I was having "Mad Men" withdrawal so this will help immensely. One commentator wrote something I had said to a co-worker earlier, " I hope I can keep up with all the twists and turns in the plot!" So much excitement in a short amount of time! I'll be there next Wednesday, FOR SURE!!!
I thought the problem with the new Dallas was that it wasn't outlandish and over the top enough, it was actually
pretty tame by the original show's standards – it was fun seeing Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy again though, so as long
as they stick around I will keep watching, but John Ross and Christopher just seemed like kids trying to play grown up.
I forgot to watch the show last night, but I'd say, judging from the reviews of many here – and a few of my friends, that this will be a hit! I hope to catch that episode in repeat-mode. Should be long, as long as the writers do not go back to when a season was "a total dream," just like when Pam woke up to see Bobby in the shower at the end of the 1985-86 season, despite Bobby's funeral to end the 1984-85 season. LOL!
I thought it was another show I would love to hate but it was pretty good. I watched the original with my parents and hated it officially but could not stop watching it.
because of hagman, duffy, etal., the show did well and will continue to do well. besides, nothing else even comes close to competing with Dallas. This show will also end this season with a cliffhanger.... "Who shot J.R., jr. ?!"
I LOVED IT!!! Brought back great memories of the first show. I was so excited they had so many of the first cast. Damn, Linda Grey looks good still and I hope they increase TV time for Charlene Tilton. Let's get her into some trouble again! I'll be watching. I couldn't figure out why Pam wasn't Bobby's wife. What did I forget?
larry went to tnt himself for this show. I am glad TNT picked it up and there is enough of us dallas fans to keep it going.great job the whole cast.
Enjoyed every min of it. I finally have something else to watch on TV other than the news now. Getting together with friends to watch next week. John Ross has NOTHING on JR.
Loved it and thought is was well done!! I'm hooked! As a veteran of the original, I was skeptical and very curious and in the end, very pleasantly surprised that it was so engaging. Was worried for a bit about JR's role, but was relieved to see the 'ol devil back to his old tricks. Sooooooooooooooo glad it's back. Thanks TNT!!!
I agree. I was prepared not to like the new Dallas, but it didn't take long to become a fan. I love it. Compared to the sitcoms and most new shows on TV it's a winner. Who cares is some of the "big time" reviewers didn't like it. I'm glad it's back.
Awesome loved it! Can't wait for next Wed!
LOVED IT!!! Twists and turns, they kept it moving. JR is still EVIL. This is great!
"Entertainment Weekly also found the new "Dallas" to be "a rare example of an artistically successful TV-classic update." TNT's version has its flaws, but overall, it's still a "solidly constructed soap," "wooden dialogue, oily plot twists" and all.
TNT is owned by the parent company of CNN."
In addition, TNT and CNN are owned by the parent company of Entertainment Weekly.
I thought it was great. It was nice to have a evening soap again! Can't beat the Ewings for night time soap entertainment!
LOVED IT!
TIME HAS NOT BEEN KIND TO LUCY
You ain't kidding.
Yeah I didn't want say it, but true.
Absolutely Loved It! The critics SUCK. I am up at 3:30 am daily, so I'm in usually in bed by 8:30 pm. I actually forgot about the premiere, but just happened to still be up, and since the tv was already tuned to TNT, I thought I would watch for a few minutes. Oh my, what a surprise, I couldn't pull myself away. I was a bit dissapointed at first when I saw the state JR was in and then Bobby's cancer. Well the show did not disappoint and those one liners of JR's were hilarious. I guess i will be going to work tired every Thursday, because i will be watching.
This is the 2nd time I've watched something that 'critics' have panned as 'terrible' and it was the opposite for me. I loved seeing Bobby and JR...and Sue Ellen. Even the new cast is growing on me. I hope others from the original show up as well. I didn't mind the nostalgia at all. The acting was good but the 2 new ladies (not Brenda Strong) really weren't that great for me. They didn't do it for the roles they're supposed to play. Maybe the casting should have been the other way around or something? I'm hoping Pam just shows up somewhere! Anywhere! heck they used to come back all the time...Bobby died like 2 or 3 times then turned back up in the shower! lol
I gotta say that the critics are totally wrong and for all the wrong reasons. They seem to be more mad that Dallas gets to live on rather than anything else. The acting storyline and writing were not bad surprisingly. I think they did rather well and I used to watch Dallas as a kid so I get that people want to leave it alone on the ending it got but Hey did anyone that actually watch the show not think it was NOT good? Didnt think so...I think the comments on here showing alot of enthusiasm for the show says alot. Screw the critics.
I must say, I was skeptical at first. I said to my husband (before watching it), "why do they have to ruin a good thing?/memory?" It turns out, I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed it and now have the show scheduled to be recorded each episode! (Agree that critics are awful–and they probably love the waste-of-time junk reality shows that plaster prime time.
Loved it, it may get old quick but I loved last night!!
I loved every minute of it!!! Was pleased to see JR and Bobby back. I read the critics reviews and totally disagree, I dont know what they were watching but they are wrong!!! It was the most entertaining show that I have seen in years. We love the ruthless Jr and angelic Bobby. A well put together series. Please keep up the good work. I will start watching television again!!!
As a fan of the original, I looked forward to the new Dallas coming back to primetime. I was skeptical of the new generation, but thought everyone pulled off a great story line bringing back memories of the past....the twist, the turns and down right dirty tactics is just what I loved about the original. Reality shows have come, but think Dallas can bring something new and enjoyable. That JR sure does keep us sitting at the edge of our seats....didn't even get up during commercial b/c I thought I was going to miss something... and of course, that look on JR's face at the end.......Loved it!!
The show was good. I guess since it was not a tacky reality show the critics disliked it.
Link & I watched Dallas together last night...Link hates where television is now but Link LOOOOOVED the show & we both can't wait for next Wednesday...We depend on JR being JR & he was. We really enjoyed the first two episodes...Thanks TNT...forget you critics...It's a blessing for us that the original many of the original actors are still alive, well & acting...One more things Bobby has never been boring...he was Bobby & to us ladies he was handsome & is handsome now...watch yourself in the mirror 20 yrs from now & don't break it when u see what looks back...PEACE...
My 29 year old daughter watched it with me and we BOTH LOVED it! She loved it so much that she wants to go back and watch the old series. Tell the critics to go soak their heads the public knows best!!!!!!!
when i was home for lunch they were having a marathon on the CMT channel of the old shows.
I loved it as well. Critics,go waste your time some place else and let us make the call. Dallas (2012) is gonna be okay. A good time slot will help.
I CAN NOT wait until next Wednesday night!!! It was awesome!!!!
when have critics ever been right about anything? they love Community and Parks & Recreation, no one watches it. I've been to movies that i thought were fantastic that critics hate. Sometimes i think they play devils advocate to get you engaged. That said, it was a great show. Lots of potential and the cinematography was really good.
I thought it was great!! I loved it!!
LOVED IT! Family feuding is just as relevant today as it was in the 70s and 80s. They've updated, but woven the generations together beautifully. I thought it was a terrible idea to try again, but I was wrong–as are the critics.
Give us interactive TV and stop planning our future!!!
I was hoping it would be good for old time's sake, but was kinda expecting it would not because the whole idea was so fresh back in 1978. It is rare to come back 20+ years later and still hit the mark. BUT, I was impressed. I do plan to continue to watch it!! Well done!
I guess the critics are the only ones who did not like the show. I loved it.
I absolutely LOVED it. I will watch every week or at least record it if I am not home. The critics do not know what they talk about.
LOVED IT! The critics are wrong. Not perfect but definitely entertaining.
You are CORRECT ! I thought it was good and shows that you dont have to kill someone every show to be entertaining. JR -yeah! The critics are WRONG I will be watching every wednesday.
LOVED IT! All of a sudden it was 1978 again and 'appointment TV" time. JR as perfect as always. Plot twists magnificent. Good to see Ray and Lucy – if only briefly. Bobby does well as patriarch but cancer is a bit of a bummer. Predict that JR will (once again) overshadow the rest of the cast. See you next week!
I LOVED EVERY FREAKIN' MINUTE OF IT! I was a HUGE fan back in it's original "hey day!" Being that I'm so TIRED of these stupid reality shows, it's a breath of FRESH AIR for REAL ACTING and REAL DRAMA to come back to television! To me, they showed them how tv is supposed to be done. I wish more quality programming that IS NOT REALITY would return to television, forget the "so-called professionals"....the audience knows what it wants and I hope and pray DALLAS can hang in there and make a successful come back!!!
Major success. The numbers tell the truth. Clearly these critics are absolutely useless. Visit http://tntnewsroom.com/tnts-dallas-rides-tall-with-6-9-million-viewers/
LA HA HOOOOOOOOOVED IT!!!!! Great to see EVERYONE... Nicely done REBOOT!
They need to bring back MARY CROSBY (Christopher's Biological Mom and the one WHO SHOT JR)... She would add a NICE TWIST to the show.
I didn't remember that Pam's character was re cast in the 12th Season (by Margaret Michaels). They should bring back Victoria Principal too! Both Pam and Kristen Shepard could fight for Christopher!
They can't bring back Mary Crosby. They killed Kristen in the cliffhanger ending the season after J.R. was shot.
Old J.R. is back...and it was just about time!
What are they talking about..it was hardly campy and over the top. I think they did a pretty great job combining the old with the new..I was a huge fan of the show and I totally enjoyed the new version. Im not sure why people complaing about nothing original and all on TV. What are you talking about? There are a ton of new shows on a ton of channels/ HBO. FX etc etc all have new shows... this happens to be a reboot but if that offends you so much there is a ton of stuff to watch
If the critics are under 40, they need to take a step back. It could be that they have such a bias in favor of reality TV trash that they have no idea of what existed before on television. While many may care what Snooki or the Kardashians do–I could not care less. Many of us long for something more entertaining to watch on TV. I watched Dallas on TNT last night, and I agree that there are so many plots, I had to take a step back and try to count them. So far, all but two of the cast members are crooked. The show is not about, nor was it intended to be about who has the biggest boobs for the biggest rear ends; nor is it about airheads with no talent who flitter around whining about problems that nobody cares about. Seemingly, the show, as before is really the Corleone family in Texas vs. NY. I hope the new show does not get cancelled. For those who know what I mean when I say the Corleone family–more power to us because we know what makes a good drama.
Very well said Ann!
I LOVED IT! I watched the original Dallas with my mom when I was a kid and loved that they stuck to the roots of the show. Def. will be watching every week.
Watched all of the old series. Watched again last night. I really could care less about what the professionals thought. If they like what is on in prime time today that just makes my case. There is not a single show for the past year on prime time that I watch. The reruns on some of the channels have better suited me. I one minus for the new Dallas and this shows my age. There were more plots put forth than my old brain could follow. KEEP DALLAS GOING-I'LL BE THERE EACH WEDNESDAY NIGHT
Loved it.Can't wait till next week.My husband even loved it.Hope it does well.Loved the fact too they kept the opening the same. Can't wait to see how J.R. get's back at his son 🙂
Are the critics jealous? Is someone paying them off? I LOVED THE SHOW and it was good to see JR back in action. Remember how dirty he used to be and always with a smile? Well he's right back and now that it's 2012 the network will probably have no holds barred. I can't wait for Cliff Barnes to show up and be tortured. He and JR were like Wil E. Cayote and the Road Runner! TNT should have another winner!
I thought Dalllas would have updated in diversity also.
I saw an african american ranch hand...
Those of us still of sound mind that actually remember this show doesn't care. The ones that care are no longer of sound mind. Even the creator of the show is no longer with us.
LOVED IT! As usual the critics only see what they want to see. Its a show you will love to hate-the good, the bad and the ugly. But I do agree without the original stars I doubt that the young actors would carry the show very long-but they may improve and mature in their roles with the help of the originals -I am optmistic – I certainly will stay with it for awhile as long as J.R. and Bobby are a part of it and also glad to see some of the other originals. Can't wait to see who gets backstabbed and doublecrossed next!
I loved the old show and I love the new show! I plan to visit South Fork Ranch this summer!
LOVED it! took me about 15 min to really "get into" it, but once I started seeing and hearing the old familiar faces and fightsd, I couldn't stop watching! I even watched the replay right after!
I thought it was great; really enjoyed it and am looking forward to the next one!
Loved it! Critics get paid to say stuff. Some of those "experts" are young and inexperienced. The people have spoken. Dallas was a HIT!
I TOTALLY am hooked ! I KNOW where I'll be on Wednesday nights!! I had a date with my Dad to watch it, and it brought back ALL the memories, I loved all the twists, some were predictable, but not all of them, and I can't wait for Wednesday nights!!
I loved it too! It was prett good considering, and so refreshing. It makes you remember what shows were once made of. Although, there are only a handful of other good shows right now too especially on the USA channel, but TNT did something right to bring Dallas back. I feel it will win everybody over as the episodes keep going.
loved it as well – many plots. do wish jr would trim his eyebrows or something.
Yes, the eyebrows are nuts!!!!
It was rubbish. It's a good thing I have better shows to watch than this drivel.
Dynasty 2.0: 0/10
and just what shows would that be? ROFLMAO
rubbish huh? now there's an outdated term.
look in the mirror. see a big pile of it.
loved it. I hope this new show does as well as the new Hawaii 50. love that show too.. nobody gets the best of ole J R.
I'm glad I'm not the only one here who remembers this from my childhood!
I DVRed it and will watch it tomorrow- cant wait.
Did they ever bring up Pam? I'd love to see Victoria Principle back! What was Priscilla Presley's name? Jenna? Did they bring her up at all? I'll watch but still curious.
I'm in Dallas HEAVEN... again!
Seeing as how i'm not over 40, i was born and raised in Texas, and i live in the DFW area, i cringed when i saw the preview tags about this show coming back. I think i heard my husband dry heaving next to me as well. Maybe they should bring back gilligan's island instead... Oh wait, that's survivor. Bewitched? No, no, that was eastwick – it didn't do too well either. Dynasty is the real housewives of (blank). It goes on and on. The sad thing is that the only original programming going on right now is in cartoons. Really really sad.
Wrong! Even cartoons plots are not original. It's all been done before. When channel surfing through movies, I noticed most are either about romance, murder, kidnapping, cheating, heists/robbing, etc. There are only so many plots.
I watched every episode of the original, and was skeptical of the new series...but I really enjoyed it!! Critics were totally wrong on this one! Great job TNT and can't wait to watch the next episode!
Critics, what do they knw. I thought it was fun. Good old back stabbing. Can't beat t!
Add me to the list...I LOVED IT AND CAN NOT WAIT UNTIL NEXT WEEK.
I love it, to the critics back off.
I'm with Randy – add me to the LOVED IT list as well. JR's first words had me on my feet dancing around my living room. I was depressed that Mad Men had wrapped up it's season on Sunday but now I have another show to look forward to. Can't wait till next week!!
Great show I hooked again.
Thumbs up to TNT. After the reality dumbing down over the past several years Dallas may be a refreshing change.
Why on earth do some people want Victoria Principal back? She is a snob and doesn't want to return. Add to the fact that Andy Gibb committed suicide because she refused to help him. We don't want her on the show. Actually, Dallas is a show about beautiful people with the exception of JR. That being said, Patrick Duffy and Victoria Principal no longer belong, as quite frankly, their looks have gone to hell. Linda Gray, on the other hand, is still beautiful and definitely is an asset to the new Dallas.
Andy Gibb did not commit suicide, he died of a heart related condition due to drug use and illness. I personally I do not like Victoria Principle, but she was a huge part of the original show.If she does not want to return, that is her loss, Bet enough money could get her back, though. All she does anymore is push her cosmetics.
I was a huge fan of the original show and I absolutely loved the new version! It was so great to see JR! Thank you TNT for bringing Dallas back!
I would not accept phone calls during the original Dallas episodes and feel the same about the new Dallas!! Excellent! Can't wait for the next episode. I love JR! He is as nasty as ever! Glad to see the original characters and hope they are able to bring back more from the original show.
Right on!! the show is fun. To heck with the grumps that dont like it.
I LOVED IT... just like the previous writers.... Old school is what we need now. Break the rediculousness of this supposed "reality" tv. GREAT COME BACK DALLAS!!!
Fantastic show!!!!! I loved the original and this one is better than ever. Finally something entertaining and visually beautiful to watch on TV. Great job TNT and all the movers and shakers on the Dallas set.
Dallas was awesome!!! I loved it!!! The Ewings are back!!! Great entertainment!!! The critics are just stupid!!
I watched the pilot fully expecting to hate it. I was surprised I actually liked it! In the choice of reality crap on every channel, this is a welcomed change and I have my DVR set to record every episode should I not be home to watch it.
Just remember, the critics didn't care for the original pilot of "Dallas" back in '78 either. I thought the show was just right. It felt like catching up with an old friend you haven't seen in 20 years and meeting their kids. The plot twists were fun, both the predictable ones and the surprises. Can't wait to see what happens next!
Wasn't overly thrilled with the intro credits, but the show had great twists and turns... Would love to see Cliff Barnes back in the picture running Ewing Oil (as John Ross mentioned) – And just some good info, Pam was never officially declared dead. She crashed Bobby's red mercedes into a gas tanker truck, disappeared from the hospital after surgery, and later –> Cliff Barnes found her during the 12th season premiere, with a different appearance due to plastic surgery (which also doubled as an explanation for Margaret Michaels portraying the role rather than Victoria Principal). She reveals to her brother Cliff that she is happy in her new life and plans to marry her doctor. Later, after Cliff leaves, her fiance asks why she didn't tell Cliff that she has a terminal disease and only has a year to live. Though this was the character's final appearance in the series, Pam has never been declared dead on the show. Looking forward to some more Dallas on TNT!
so much better than any of those so-called reality shows.
I really enjoyed the show!!! Loved J.R back then, and love him more now. I will enjoy seeing the new generation of back stabbing. I'm hooked already!
LOVED IT!!!!
I LOVED it! The first episode was a little slow but I think iy took its time introducing the cast which is also important. The second episode got more in depth and created a lot of questions to ponder for future episodes. Love Jesse Metcalfe in the cast. Wish Pam's character would have returned. Loved the intro and so glad they kept the original theme song! Can't wait to see what unfolds at South Fork!
It was great! John Ross and Christopher are even better looking than their dads when they were younger. The plot line is good and the characters are well cast. We don't need Victoria Principal, but Ken Kercheval would be nice to call back. He is one great actor. I don't think we need Patrick Duffy in it, but Linda Gray definitely needs to be in it. Also, they need to fix the opening credits. They don't look good and have no pictures. Perhaps go back to the old way. Don't think you can improve on those old opening credits much. The new John Ross (Josh Henderson) is really impressive.
I loved it ! it brought me back to when I was younger it was a great change from reality tv!!!!
After 21 years, "Dallas" returned to primetime Wednesday night on TNT just
as outlandish and over-the-top as ever. But for some TV critics, that's not a compliment.
visit http://99users.blogspot.in/2012/06/dallas-new-its-improve-not.html
When critics pan something, I usually will love it, as in this case. Get real, critics. What planet are you on? It's TV, it's a soap. I enjoy it for what it is. I see J.R. in allot of our politicians today.
Thank you TNT . It was wonderful; so looking forward to next episode.
The critics are NUTS - fire them.
Some passable acting similar to terrible reality shows from previous Dallas actors but quality of show diminished by too many commercials. New Dallas not worth the time to sit through bad commercials.
DALLAS was great and I look forward to each episode. Always a fam. Prime time drama with all the sins the original DALLAS had and more twists, turns, schemes with a new generation. Always love JR and Sue Ellens character. Thank you for brightening up the middle of the week. I am so sick and tired of horrible realty shows of singing, dance, bachelors, survival and stuff.
I thought the show was great! I can't wait for the next episode!
Are the critics nuts? Are they the ones who love trashy shows as "The Karsdashians" "Jersey Shore" or "The Real World"? The premiere of "Dallas" was great, I loved the new betrayals, and my family and I watched twice. I've been a big fan of the show since I was a kid (thanks Dad for letting me watched it back then) and I'm looking forward to watching the next episode.
I agree with other posts- I loved the show and it's a nice change from all of the REALITY SHOWS that are taking over every channel now. It's good to see a plot thicken and for JR to experience the same kind of trickery he used to play on everyone else that crossed his path. I was however, sad not to see Bobby's original wife on there. Although the new chick plays her part very well. I say KUDOS to the new Dallas – I am loving it and I will continue to tune in every week just like I did with the old one. NOW, If they could bring back a newer version of Dynasty, that would be great!
I loved it! I was skeptical at first but thought the show was great! I cannot wait for the next episode. I agree with others. I am sick of reality TV.
First off there is no oil in Dallas or Collin County. South-fork Ranch is not 20, 000 Acres, and the accents are all wrong. This is Texas, not the south. And the Acting or should I say lack there of. Really disappointing.
Right, you are, James. but JR left Dallas (Plano) a week ago Friday to live at home in Illinois (land of corruption) with his momma. No, I'm not Miss Ellie, but I've got two fighting boys (men) living at home. Loved Southfork on a visit. So camp.
Give me a break...outside of that little area do you think teh rest of the country knows or cares what the accent should be in Texas..
LOVED IT! LOVED IT! LOVED IT! i'm so glad they brought this back, it keeps you wondering just like the old show!
Loved it. The show was familiar yet fresh and interesting. And those aerial shots of the ranch and of downtown Dallas, absolutely STUNNING!!! The architecture is that city is nothing short of amazing.
The only people who wouldnt like this version are the idiots who watch Bigbrother or Survivor.
While true that the true fans were looking for more of the same old Dallas, there is enough being setup to make this a vialable .and definatley better than some of the other shows on cable and of course not as good as others.
I wouldnt expect a hit here, but definately a show that will entertain.
Note that its gonna take more than 1-2 episodes to setup a show such as this even with it
carrying over the original stories and etc..
Naturally without the original JR this show would be toast.
But one can groom a new JR, if JR junior can muster it.
hey idiot, I love Big Brother and Survivor and I loved the new Dallas. Speak for your own idiot self!!!!!!
I watched every episode of Dallas, just love JR but I wont be watching this new one, I just couldnt be bothered to see a younger generation. It just wont be the same.
Yeah Anna, that's real smart. Don't even bother to watch it but complain about it anyway.
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who loved it. Sure, it's cheesy and over the top just like the original but for those of us who watched faithfully back in the day, that's exactly what we were looking for it to be. I hung on every moment in the two hours and set my DVR just in case. To me it is the perfect, silly summer pleasure <3
I absolutely loved the show last night. I was excited by all the plot twists and turns. Some of them I saw coming. Others blindsided me. Hagman and Duffy were great as always. I am glad that they were brought back to the show. They link the old show with the new one. I was very young when Dallas went off the air but I remember how much my mother loved this show. I found myself watching last night and wishing she were here to watch it with me.
Really enjoyed it but not surprised the "critics" panned and disliked the show. We want to see what we the people want to see not what a bunch of "critics" want to see which is obvious by the majority of the comments out here. Many times really good and entertaining shows get cancelled while trash stays on for years. Anybody remember back when "critics" said how horrible "The Sound of Music" was yet was a huge block buster with the people at the time and won 5 Academy Awards and still is a treasure today. "Critics" now almost embarrassingly admit they disliked it now. Thank you TNT and Dallas!!!
Loved it. Just when you think that they can't get any nastier, they out do themselves plotting against each other. If you liked the original, you should definitely like this one.
I agree with everyone here – except for like 2 or 3 boneheads – that the show was awesome last nite. Both the pilot and the second episode had me engaged from the get go.
What I loved best was that they kept the intro song pretty much intact. It brought back a rush of memories from my childhood in the '80s (i'm 37 now). Friday nights at my house in those days were set in stone: it was always pizza night (2 homemade pies made by my Mom) with The Dukes of Hazard followed by Dallas on CBS. What happened to television like that???
It's obvious to me – judging by what I've read by my fellow brethren here – that the American television viewing audience is craving family dramas like Dallas, Dynasty, Falcon Crest and Knots Landing again. You don't have to go and reboot all these shows but people want that family drama formula I mean. And it's obvious the public is sick of the mindless crap of reality tv.
That said, I think the reboot and success of the new Hawaii 5.0 started this trend, and I hope tv execs are paying close attention.
Lastly, the critics are like the judges on those mindless crap reality tv: useless. It's up to us – the viewers – to keep Dallas 2.0 going. We have all the power!
Thanks TNT.
Updated Dallas is about as entertaining as watching paint dry! I couldn't get past the extremely cheesy glances exchanged between the guests at the first family dinner scene. I'd lost intrest in the original series and found nothing redeeming in either of the first two episodes to keep me interested. The writers may want to consider less kitch and more suspense. One more thing, Larry Hagman PLEASE TRIM THOSE MUTANT EYEBROWS!!!! GROSS!!!!!
I think it is really cool. I watched the orginal Dallas from beginning to end; and now I lilve in Dallas for almost 20 years. It is great to see a new fresh look to Dallas... So far, I like it. I never listen to critics, they are nuts like Roseanne!!
I agree with John. Television was invented to ESCAPE reality and what do the "know it all" programmers do but bombard us with it 6 days out of 7!!!!!
While it didn't have the dramatic punch that the original "Dallas" brought to the audience, I liked it and think it will improve with time. One of the things that would make it much better is to have Cliff Barnes son battling it out with J.R's son. That rivalry was one of the dramatic overtones of the show.
I have to say I got bored with it, and wound up changing channels. It should really be called 'Dallas, The Next Generation'. The plots are the same, and after a 21 year hiatus, too predictable. Maybe all the reality TV with its hyped up drama has put a bad taste in my mouth.
May watch it on occasion, but unless they come up with something fresh, I really don't think it will last too long.
I am a Dallas Fan. I loved the show, and especially J.R. & Sue Ellen's return. Not sure what show YOU watched, but it was thoroghly entertaining. I didn't take a smoke break the whole show! 🙂
love "jr". show is just getting started and already i am hooked again. keep up the good work larry
I loved it too......Larry Hagman rocks as J.R. Ewing!!!
'Dallas' is a classic. It took me back to my pre-teen years and I enjoyed seeing it again.
I saw the first 15 minutes and turned it off!! I really blew! Looked the "zombie" version of Dallas...
Skrew the critics. I watched last night and would take the new Dallas over ANY of the rediculous "housewives", Kardashians, or Jerky Shore "reality" shows any day of the week!!!! To bad Victoria Principal is doing SO well with her cosmetics company that she has given up acting entirely. They only thing missing from the show last night was HER!
Nothing says "I'm about to sc.rew you" like Larry Hagman's smile! Wasn't impressed with Josh's character (John Ross) – seemed to hot-headed to be the son of the great puppet master.
Loved seeing it back. Glad they kept the music, and there is no one like "good old JR"! I will miss hearing him say "daddy".
The true critics are the viewers and as a viewer, I thought it was fantastic!!! Larry Hagman (as JR Ewing) was incredible then and he is incredible now. It is a hit with me and my family!!! So to all those so called "critics", go back to your Kardashian loving reality shows that you hail. Thanks TNT and congrats to the cast of the new Dallas.....
I agree with you Mark! I really enjoyed it. The writers should bring back Victoria Principle to make it more interesting.
Show was great!!! Can't wait till the next show!!! Everyone look out JR is back and as mean as ever...... awesome
Good memories from the first run and the second run is following in the same fashion. Bring it on, love it !!!
Pretty Good show. I really thought John Ross would end up in the pool when Christopher went after him, after all, that was tradition at Ewing parties. I also thought they would address the 'ancestry' of the 'cousins' Maybe later. MOST OF ALL. – WHY ONLY 9 EPISODES????????.
Wife and I loved the show in the early years and loved the remake just as well. Way to go TNT. The networks missed an opportunity for a new gold mine in our opinions.
Ann Ewing/Brenda Strong has the best haircut on the show, would love to see the show pull out some fashion stops for old times sake!
Thank you TNT....Finally a show that will be fun and entertaining to watch...I always loved the night-time soaps (Dallas, Falcon Crest, Knots Landing)....So glad to see it back....Love JR and Bobby....Larry Hagman is the greatest.....Linda Gray is cool also....Looks like she's going to be something else......Thanks again TNT and the hell with the critics.....Anything they praise--stay away from--where do these people come from--obviously, not the real world.....
OMG – absolutely the worst show ever
Acting: horrible, comical, accents a joke. You could not make up a stroy of how bad it played.
Script: was this written by an adult? Couldn't be any worse
Set Design: ugly sets, not in the least bit convincing, bad lighting
Sound: Couldn't understand half the dialogue, music was just plain awful
I predict half a season and gone for ever. Too bad, they could have had a goldmine.
I was perfectly happy with the conviction that JR was dead. I see no justification for resurrecting him now, after 20 years. In my opinion, Dallas is a chick flick ... no real man would watch it.
Hey critics out there...seems like just about all the posters on this thread LIKE THE SHOW. You LOSE!!!!
The critics are nuts. Television went over the top with boring reality and talent shows and then when something like the new Dallas comes along they think it sucks? The people are craving some real ENTERTAINMENT as opposed to a constant stream of boring and cheaply produced reality and talent shows and the new Dallas delivers. 2 Thumbs UP.
Sucks like most remakes of shows from the 70's. What's next "CHIPS"?
Hey ... I'm sure that Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox are sitting around waiting to hop back on the bikes. So don't be so fast in dismissing it!!!! lol 😉
don't say that!! Erik Estrada is desperately looking for work. I bet he's preparing a pitch right now.
The critics just want something trashy...like most TV soap operas. Dallas is (and mostly always was) classy, and it's great to have it back. The show was at its best when it focused on family, and that's exactly what the new Dallas seems to be doing. I, for one, thought it was great!
Loved it! Perfect marriage of old and new. J.R. Ewing...the ultimate villain. Still as ruthless and captivating in 2012 as in 1979. BRAVO!!!
What the heck are the critics thinking?! I LOVED it! Their negative reviews better not get this show cancelled, it was entertainment from beginning to end, way to go!
I absolutely loved it. Watching a second time to revisit the "twists and turns" which always made this show GREAT!
LOVED IT!! LOVED IT!! LOVED IT!!
Just as over-the-top as the original. Would love to see more of the original cast members turn up, too. It's wonderful to have something "new" to watch this summer. I'm thrilled!!!!
Check out the numbers on TNT newsroom. The numbers don't lie. Damn near 7 million viewers tuned in last night. Yeah...the critics clearly got the bird from all of us. Nice work TNT! And thanks to Executive Producer Cynthia Cidre for writing the pilot to make it happen all over again!
ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE SHOW!!! I got chills when the Dallas theme song was played. That famous look of JR when he found out that his son, John Ross, had betrayed him, was priceless, and John Ross, definitely is a chip off the old block. Let the games begin!! I'd like to see a return of the nighttime "soaps" and get rid of those ridiculous reality shows.
So glad to know that I wasn't the only one to have those same chills when the theme was played! I absolutely loved the show, it completely drew me in just as the old Dallas always used to do. Many, many thanks to TNT for doing this series and can't wait till next week and the next episode!
Amen to getting rid of the so-called "reality" shows.....Loved the original Dallas & will love the new version if the powers that be, will give it a chance..
I wonder if some of these "critics" were even old enough to remember the original TV series. They are probably so used to "reality TV", they couldn't spot a good dramatic TV series if it fell right on top of them. Hopefully, the viewers will keep this show alive and not depend on the "critics" view.
Very nicely done. Great story. Great acting. I especially loved the aerial shots of SouthFork Ranch.......but....boy do the veteran actors look OLD.....Larry Hagman looked ANCIENT...but the worst during her cameo was Charlene Tilton......She looked hideous............
I think Larry Hagman is 80, so he is "up there" in age. And I agree, Charlene Tilton looked like a stuffed older version of an alcoholic, in remission.
Not too sure what I thought of the show – shocked to see J.R in a nursing home! Not too sure about Sue Ellen's role. Too many new people too fast! Miss Pam & Ray. I wish they would come back. I will keep watching, but I don't think the new series can hold a breath to the original Dallas!
Loved it... Most people I know that watched it also loved it. Will continue watching. Can't get the DALLAS tune out of my head today. Enjoy...
I liked the show !!
Loved the show. I wish each one of the former actors could be in it... but alas, Barbara Bel Geddes is no longer with us. I always remember the tale of how Larry Hagman spoke of his acceptance of his role 34 years ago... he said, "With Barbara Bel Geddes in it, I know it will be a quality production."
I want to see a Ewing BBQ... and a fight between a Ewing and a Barnes!
Loved it ! Thank you TNT!
I don't have a dad but if I did I would want him to be JR!
i missed th e beginning, how did pam die? the rest was ok. i could prbably get used to it
Valene was in that awful car accident... the Mercedes and the blown up tanker... and she was burned so badly that she went off by herself. She didn't want to burden Bobby and Christopher. He was so young. We saw her in therapy and meeting someone else. I am not sure they killed her off. She just disappeared, as I recall.
As I recall (I WAS quite young at the time) Pam dies at the end of the original series. I seem to remember her getting hit by a car in the driveway .... or something like that.
Dallas is and was an entertaining soap opera! Great to see Larry Hagman, Linda Gray, Patrick Duffy and the others camp it up! The show was never intended to be rocket science! I will watch regardless of the "critics". It was well paced and retained that old, what's next standard. Glad to see some veteran actors in primetime!
I loved show and I can't wait for next week.
I LOVED IT CAN'T WAIT TO FINALLY SEE A GREAT SHOW ON T.V. NUMBER FAN.
Loved it!!!!
Two JRs, awesome.
WELL DONE. I like the idea of some of the actors being Hispanics and Black, as Dallas is truly a diversified city. My husband and I were glued to the TV set the entire time. We were not disapointed and can only see it getting better. Hope that it will have a long, long run. Can hardly wait until next week's episode. Welcome back "DALLAS"!!!
Give it time. I loved the show back then and loved the new version.
they needed to keep it original to keep the attention of fans of the original. They need more of the original actors if you ask me.
Once they are able to establish a viewership they can certainly update the writing to more current issues and make it more appealing to all.
As someone who grew up watching this show I'm glad it had that familiar feel. I hope it lasts long enough to appease these picky critics. Good thing they don't decide what shows make it and what shows don't. Viewers decide that. And hopefully the viewers will give this one a chance.
Loved it!!! To hell with the critics.....They only ever like the obscure, artsy, classic crap that no one but critics and other fringe viewers watch. What's so wrong about just be entertained by something on TV, even if it is a campy, melodramatic soap. Bring em' all back, Knot's Landing, Dyansty, Falcon Crest etc!!!!!!!
Fantastic! Larry Hagman was particularly good at the end when he realized John Ross was scamming him and made he's "chip off the old block"" comment. He played it with mixed pride and anger – just perfect!
I agree, totally! JR is still the MAN....
Who cares what the critics say..Tv shows are for entertainment & from reading the comments sounds.... like people were entertained.I grew up watching. I LOVED IT! Will be watching next week. Great old & new cast. Loved the story line with old ways vs. New.
Loved it! Brought back many memories. My son called and reminded me to tune in. So glad I did!!! Critics need to back off!
The original actors were great, but the new ones totally lost my attention. Storyline was more obvious than a red dress at a funeral. Snore.
Enjoyed it, but let's face it, 90% of the enthusiasm here is nostalgia. If this was a new show people would have been saying, "What a bunch of bland young people! Totally uninteresting." Hagman was good as always, but my guess is any young person who has no nostalgia for the old 'Dallas' flipped the channel after the first hour. As a trip down memory lane, perfectly acceptable (the theme song is still great). As a new show? Nothing to offer. Still, the 40+ crowd will probably make it a summer hit.
LOVED IT. Takes me back to my teen years.
Screw the critics! This was fast, furious and drama full! LOVED IT LOVED IT! Watch the entire show from 79 to end as a kid w/my Grandmother. This was just as good last night. Bring it on you SOB JR Ewing, you're the best! He's got us hooked again!
Viewers should never lean to or listen to critics. We should never shape our interests to fit the opinions of others. It seems the critics collaborated to form a unified statement...which may have been bought. Somethings have no need to be technical or even factual, just entertaining. I truly enjoyed the new Dallas (as I did the old) and I look forward to seeing future episodes. I don't need critics to guide my interest.
Loved it!!! So excited for the next episode!
Forget the critics, they probably were happy the Kardashians are still on. TNT nailed it they wove together the past with the present. It looks like they have a hit on their hands. They need to bring back James. I'll take the Ewings over the Kardashians any day.
The show is outstanding! It is exactly as it's meant to be: delicious fun!! During these hard times, when many people are just getting by if they even are, this type of show is the escape and fun we need. Any reviewer who writes a negative review, just doesn't get it!
Critics hated it? Like that's a shocker. 99 times out 100 what they hate the general population seem to like. I guess the critics would love more of SNOOKIE, and the likes, on TV.
So Glad its Back!!!! Show was Great and can not wait till next Wendsday! JR – Older the violin the sweeter the Music!
This Show Rocks. Those negative critics can go kick rocks.
absolutely fantastic. Can't wait for next episode
Absolutely loved it!!
I'm a huge fan of Dallas from back in the day. I just watched the pilot and I thought it was very well done. I cant recall why Bobby isn't married to Pam, but the show would seem more true to form with her in it. It's not that Bobby's current wife isn't a good fit-Its merely that theres still a very old feud at work here, and Pam and Sue Ellen always had an interesting dynamic around it. Pam was also more in Miss Ellie's corner than Sue Ellen ever was, so the show could use her position. Other than that, I think it's definitely going to get good!
I have waited for the BIG reveal of Dallas. I thought the producers did an awesome job with the comeback. The drama, back biting, and suspense were awesome!! I love the how they pulled the second generation in with the two sons being at opposite ends of the spectrum. Clean Energy vs Oil. I love it!!
Absolutely loved it! JR is up to his old tricks - already - excellent writing - kept me engage in the show from the beginning to the end. I would love to see more of the "old" cast - where is Clift? Where is Jenna Wade (didn't she marry Ray? But not at the wedding?) Where is James (JR's oldest son)? Maybe some of these back in time.... Also - looking forward to more scenes in the "house" - and hope the layout is similar with the living room and dining room (some great fights in those rooms - just for the "family").
I actually liked it. Not a fan of the shaky hand-held camera thing they had going on but really enjoyed the show. I personally would like to see Nicolette Sheridan slither across the screen as a villainess of some sorts. Brenda Strong turned in a stellar performance as the family matriarch. I need a Desperate Housewives replacement. This fits the bill.
I love it!!!!!!
Awesome! What a nice break from "reality" – cannot wait until next week!
My wife and I watched it last night and Loved it. It was like 1978 all over again....that rotten, slick JR Ewing hooked us again.
Loved it! They had to really work to get all the twists and story lines in 2 hours. Pure entertainment. Can't wait til next Wednesday.
Original show was the most entertaining and date night television show in history. I will not miss TNT's new version and loved seeing my beloved characters return to South Fork! Go TNT! Something besides "reality TV" has me very excited about this summer. Loved the new Dallas!
I have to say, I really liked it. I wish Pam was back but I loved Brenda Strong's character of Ann. Also, really enjoyed Jordana Brewster. Josh Henderson was pure EVIL incarnated. He did a fantastic job as John Ross. I will watch again
Outdated? Alternative energy vs. Big Oil - maybe I'm outdated (at 30!) but I thought that was a pretty relevant topic!
I'm so glad that decided to do a continuation of the story and not a remake! I thought they did a great job of weaving the old with the new. It was great to see the old characters (and yes, Pam and Cliff Barnes were missed but I hear Cliff is going to be recurring) - as soon as JR spoke to John Ross, I actually said out loud, "He's back!" because I knew we had a show to watch! I also love that they are using the old theme song, it brought up such good memories of sitting on my grandmother's living room floor eating a homemade snack and watching with her!
The new characters for the most part are a nice continuation. Josh Henderson is perfect as the next JR Ewing. A few of the other actors were a bit forced but IT IS A PILOT, so I'm hoping that shakes out over time. Plus it is a Soap - I hope the critics weren't expecting Shakespeare!
I loved it and hope the rest of the season/series is as good as the first 2 episodes!
Only issues I had with the show was..
1. They tried to cram too many plots into 1 episode. I was getting lost in the first 30 minutes.
2. Patrick Duffy is still as boring as he was 20 years ago. I don't think he is ever going to grab anyone's attention.
3. The sons were...at least in my mind..trying too hard to be villans. The guy that played John Ross I could tell was overacting at times trying to look and sound evil.
Other than that..all in all...it's going to have me watching each week.
We need Pam back. We need Dallas to run another 14 years or more. Bring back Knots Landing too. Make it SO!
PAINFUL to watch. So bad.
loved it was very interesting – laid the ground work for a lot of action. Loved the return of JR – thought they did it great watching him come to life was awesome. When he was in the retiremnet home I just kept wondering what is he up to? Great job – screw the critics
The new show is excellent. WELL DONE. On Wednesday, they simply set the stage for what promises to be an interesting season. I would much rather watch "Dallas" than the mindless reality on TV today. THANK YOU TNT
I LOVED it!!! Who cares what the critics say? Blending of the old and new is fantastic!
We have been waiting for the return of Dallas for a long time. Kudos to TNT for bringing it back. I had to sort out the relationships of the young people at first but enjoyed thoroughly the two initial hours of the new show. It has me hooked once again. I can continue to sort out all of the plots and plotting of the young folks now. JR and Bobby are great in their return. Where is Pam? Maybe some flashbacks would be appropriate to explain relationships.
I was also an avid viewer of the older version of Dallas, couldn't wait to watch it on Friday nights, I think CBS carried the original. Loved the music and I was glad they kept it in the new Dallas, I thought it was good, wish Pam would come back and James (J.R. first born) and I will keep watching on Wednesday's. I along with others are so sick of reality TV. Dallas is
so much more interesting. Loved Larry Hagman, he is a great actor. I also liked him on I Dream of Jeannie.
I thought it was great!
I loved it! Screw the critics! They form an opinion just like the rest of the planet! Useless job!! I watched Dallas from 78 to 91. I'll continue to watch it each work. There is a lot to follow after the 2 hour pilot. I wish Victoria Principal would return. She and Bobby were my favs. Elderly people are set in their ways, so is JR. What the hell do citics expect from him? Old habits die hard idiots.
I loved it I really enjoy drama and I am so tired of the reality shows that are on most regular channels. Way to go TNT for putting something on worth watching. I thought they did a really good job with the story line and keeping with tradition.
thanks again TNT
I think the remake was good. Critics were looking for something else obviously. I liked the old-school intro and original theme song. I hope JRs driving an El Camino (or was it a Ranchero) in upcoming episodes.
jr drove a cadillac Allante from about 85 to 91
Loved every minute of it and can'r wait til next week!
I agree... Critics have no idea what a good show is. Are these critics the same ones that report on movies, they don't have a clue either. I have always gone to a movie that critics hate, because of these reason. Dallas did have a slow start, but recovered and turned out great. NOW IM A CRITIC OMG I'LL GIVE IT 4 OUT OF 5 STARS. 4 OUT OF 5 BECAUSE NOTHING IS PERFECT. BUT US AS VIEWERS, ARE NOT LOOKING FOR PERFECT..WE ARE LOOKING FOR ENTERTAINMENT.
"Loved it". So many plots were sown. I can't wait until the next episode.
Larry Hagman was great, as he always has been. J R is a step ahead of
everyone. As he always was.
When I was a kid, I used to watch Dallas with my mom so I grew up with the show and have a soft spot for it. I was skeptical about this version of Dallas, but I enjoyed the two episodes on the whole. A nice blend of old & new cast and it felt comfortable to watch as a continuation of the Dallas story.
Great show and the critics are so lame. Most of them would know a good show if it hit them in the face. Acting was terrific and writing was right on.
What do the critics know? I loved Dallas and I will continue to watch. Jr, Bobby and faces from the past were the best
I watched all 13 seasons of the original Dallas and loved every minute of it. I agree with one writer here. I think many of the critics are wrong. I will sum up my feeling about the new Dallas in one word.. AWESOME! I will continue to watch, for sure! I loved it!
TNT has my attention this summer!! Thanks for bringing back Dallas loved the show last night! Such a great, great change from the gabage that is on the networks now! (ie.. Reality Shows)
Actually not as bad as I thought it would be. At first I said they are really desperate to put this on. But after being a loyal watcher back in it's heyday it kind of picks up where they left off. Now there will be a whole new generation of battling relatives. I think it will work eventually. For those who have watched before they will go right along with it. For those who never watched it, they will pick it up fast enough. Besdies there is nothing else good on Wednesday's. I will watch it.
Sorry but these critics don't know what they are talking about, and I agree with Steven Day that the critics are useless. The new Dallas nailed it. I was happy that they kept the original theme song and fused the old generation with the new. JR is something else. Contrary to the critics' opinion, Dallas has a huge fan base. Their idea of good television is probably reality shows. I I can't wait for the next episode.
I loveit. There are inconsistanties! In the original JR found out he had an adult son. Jame Richard (JR). So he, not John Ross is the 1st born grandson, and James had a son. JR also has a son with Cally, that he did not raise. That son would be in his early 20s. Bobby also has a son with Jenna. (Lucas) he would be in his mid 20 to late 20's. Would love to see these characters make some noise too!!! Can't wait for next week.
Fun in 1978 and now,More JR (He's great) and all the rest are a delight to watch. Can't wait for Cliff Barnes to show up
I loved it! I will be waiting and watching every episode.
Well, all we need now is a new Dynasty, Alexis, start getting those shoulder pads ready!!!
I think the critics are wrong! This was truly awesome! I never missed an episode years ago and will not miss one now! Weel done several twists and turns and you never knew what was coming next! Great job!
Thought is was great.
Pam is not dead....it was left open when she left with the doctor who treated her burns.he asked her why she didn't tell them that she only had a year left to live.......and we've never heard anything else. How do you know what nobody else does?
And....an added note, it won't matter what the critics think if the fans like the show!!!!
I loved it and think the critics really missed the mark. I thought the new kids did a good job and Larry, Patrick and Linda were great. They DID bring the show up to date by having Christopher looking at alternative fuels and it will only get better! I can't wait for next week!
I really liked the new Dallas! So much that I stayed up until 1 am watching it. I am glad they included some history in it. If you have seen the original you will remember and if you are new to the show you get the backstory. Loved it and I will be watching it faithfully. Not only that John Ross (Josh) and Christopher (Jesse) are very easy on the eyes! Why not watch? Always a nice escape to reality...
For years i had hoped this show would come back. And i have to say i loved it. They did a great job!! SOOO many times they try to redo an older show and it just seems like it never works, The way they did this show is a winner, if anyone is taking notice and is planing on bringing back any other shows,,,,, do it like this. This allows you to pick up the old fans and a world of new!! Its the best comeback i have seen so far.
enjoyed the new dallas //brought back old memories of dallas.good acting good plot.the new generation of their kid's seem to be as evil as the old one's..can't wait to see next episode/
Room for improvement but still incredibly satisfying. Bringing new viewers & classic followers = TNT
This is why I don't listen to critics. I thouroughly enjoyed it! Best thing on tv right now. A welcome change from all the ridiculous reality shows on tv. This was pure entertainment. Over the top drama and all. Loved it!!
Well said Gapeach! Couldn't agree more.
Loved it then and sper love it now I am hooked can't wait till next show Dallas rocks yeah!!!!!!!!
Dallas is back with big bang!!! There was enough double-crossing on list night episodes for two shows. So many plot twists, I was glued to my seat. Excellent come-back job!!!.
Totally agree, there were so many twists and backstabbing going on I was soon going to have to get pen and paper to keep track. I loved it!
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!! CAN'T WAIT FOR NEXT WEEK!
Loved it, thought it was well done and really good. So glad it's back. YEA
The original was stupid and so is the remake. Doesn't Hollywood have any original ideas anymore?
if you don't like it, go watch disney or PBS, something that fits your teenage age group.
These critics are useless. Watched both episodes last night and kudos to TNT! Wow. Enjoyed both episodes very much. And watching that scowl from JR at the end of episode 2 was just priceless. John Ross...you better look out boy! "Never pass on an opportunity to shut up!"
One word....PAM!!!
I loved the new DALLAS. I watched the original when I was a kid. I enjoyed the new generation of Ewings.
Loved the show – so full of surprises. I am so tired of the reality shows and hardly watch TV, but will watch this show.
Well done!! Blending the old iconic show with the new is not an easy task, Well done I say!!
I will be watching next week.
Love Love Loved it!!!!!!!!! Terrific cant wait for next week
i loved it
Im glad it back. Something good on tv again. I love seeing bad JR.
I was a fan of the original show and actually had dinner at South Fork Ranch as part of an oil explorer's convention in 1982. The reviewers obviously missed the mark as the new show nailed it. I bet most of the reviewers weren't even born when the old show aired. I thoroughly enjoyed it, warts and all. It was as if no time had elapsed between this series and the last one – except for all those wrinkles! MORE! MORE!
I enjoyed it and will be sure to watch the entire season's worth of episodes.
I wonder what the average age of these "entertainment experts" is and if they know
anything beyond reality shows and sitcoms with foul-mouthed middle school kids.
I really really enjoyed the show, can't wait for next week!
Loved it – can't wait to see more.
Bring back PAM!
Pam is dead 🙁
Pam supposedly had a terminal disease, but never actually died.
Besides, maybe she was just in the shower..
