Madonna takes on Gaga with 'Born This Way' mashup

They say imitation is the greatest form of flattery, but Madonna's recent cover of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" might not be seen as such.

While rehearsing for her M.D.N.A. tour, the Material Mom made it a point to mashup her classic song “Express Yourself” with Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way."

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToQnu34QygU&w=420&h=315]

When Gaga first dropped the single, music fans were quick to point out the similarity between the two tracks, something that hasn't been lost on Madge.

"When I heard ['Born This Way'] on the radio, I said that sounds very familiar. It feels reductive," she told "20/20" earlier this year. "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work."

But, Madonna continued, she can't really take offense.

"It's a statement about taking something that was in the zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it," she said. "I can't really be annoyed by it because, obviously, I've influenced her."

The rehearsal footage was taped just before Madonna kicked off her world tour in Israel over the weekend.

They're both playing a PR game. The more they both are in the press, the more music downloads and tickets they sell. Good for both of them.

At least Lady Gaga ain't the ho like Madonna was at that age. Madonna's just jealous since she doesn't have what it takes to get her groove on.

I knew Madonna was losing it after watching that half-time show. Spreading her legs, who wants to see a 53-year-old mom doing that crap? You're getting old. Get over it, you still have your looks (unlike many of us 53-year-olds). Make your music and shut up.

Liked Madonna in the early days. However, she was wrong to diss Gaga. Gaga is hot right now, like it or not. But then again, one of Madonna's guitarists recently screwed over a long time friend all in the name of money (fact, check it out). I guess Madonna's crew includes those who are like her, shewed and sneaky. She needs attention for this tour, guess she didn't know how else to get it except to screw someone else over. While I see similarities with the songs, it's a groove, it's dance music, alot of it sounds the same.

Madonna is an overrated senior citizen! She needs to realize that she is over the hill...a has been...and quit being a green-eyed monster towards others who are on the horizon! Just another jealous b****!

Madonna will do ANYTHING to stay in the lime light. It's about time she realizes that she will never be on the "A" list again.

Even though I'm not familiar with Madonna due to generational gaps one must give credit where credit is due. Madonna started out in the streets of NYC and night clubs after the Studio 54 days back in the 70's/80's and has still managed to make hits and sell out concerts 30 years later. Let's see if Gaga can accomplish this.

I like them both-but they are ageneration apart. I am Madonna's age and think she was great BUT my daughters are Gaga fans. And thats OK. Madonna should acknowledge that her fans are now in their 50's too and should not be comparing herself to lady Gaga. Anyway, they are both HOT Italian babes.

Well, if Madonna thinks she inspired Mother Monster, then what does that make her? Grandmother Monster? It kind of fits given then Madonna has been around for ages. While Madonna has her talents, originality is not one of them. The Material Girl has on many occasions begged, borrowed and stolen. So it makes you wonder why she reacts this way just because another artist was inspired by her. Maybe it's not easy going from Material Girl to Grandmother Monster. It's harder to get attention.

Madonna is def. a better dancer, but when she tries to sing live at the same time she goes through one of her crazy routines, she sucks. I like that Gaga can do both. Granted her dance moves aren't as crazy as Madonna's...but I don't buy their cd's because of how well they dance.

She is not Gaga for sure. Gaga can write songs, play the piano and sing better than Madonna. Why do these artists from the 80's think they are better than the new artists? They all copied people also.

    • Which reality do you live in?

The music from born this way is a copy of express yourself, just different words. The fact you can't even see this and worship a talentless hack whose only claim to fame is trying to shock people should be an embarrassment to you...

Actually if you look at the times Madonna was way more risqué. By todays standards Madonna is not daring. Back when she was doing her thing she was. In my opinion Lady Gaga does what she does for attention and nothing else. As did Madonna back then. To stir up controversy and sell albums. Nothing Lady Gaga does shocks me, as it's all been done before.

"Madonna takes on" ... I thought the article was going to be Madge trying to call out Gaga somehow, like she seems to have done before.

But a throwback to a shoutout... that doesn't seem like a big deal. And "Born This Way" was definitely a shout-out to Madonna's early work.

Never thought I would side with the Material Girl, but I have to say Madonna is hands down the best! As much as I enjoy GAGA there is just tooooooooo much to everything that she does from her hair to her clothes to her shoes to her statements that ring hollow half the time.

Madonna for all her looks she has done over the years and her accents she has taken on has always been a lot less IN YOUR FACE about herself. (Well, when you compare her to Lady Gaga or Cher of old)

    lol

Yeah, I guess I see where Madonna is coming from. She of all people ought to be able to spot a plagiarism, as she herself had the snot sued out of her by Public Enemy for oh, you know, stealing the entire friggin beat to their song "Security of the first world". But hey, at least she used her own lyrics. Oh wait, no, she totally didn't! She got sued once more by Ingrid Chavez.

Hey, let's not forget ripping off Kylie Minogue on every album cover she's made, or all the videos she's ripped off.

Funny...did you read the article? If did, you certainly did not comprehend. She appeared in her comments to be more complimented "When I heard ['Born This Way'] on the radio, I said that sounds very familiar. It feels reductive," she told "20/20" earlier this year. "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work." If you read further seems more flattered than annoyed. I echo that "Born this Way" sounds very much like "Express Yourself". Maybe you need to listen to Madonna's song first to understand instead of making comments about something you know nothing about.

Debatable as a "great" artist, but undeniably a brilliant business woman to have kept herself in the limelight so long. Lady Gaga has an AMAZING VOICE! She has been on Broadway and has an Arts Degree. She has wonderful concepts and creativity. Madonna could never sing...I liken her to Justin Timberlake, Usher, Selena Gomez, Brittany Spears, etc. All of which need gimmicks to survive and entice audiences. Lady Gaga uses gimmicks as a way to tell the story and bring you into the music. I hope that everyone on here takes the time to listen to her songs. While I enjoy Madonna's beginning music, I enjoy someone who CAN SING more.

Love. I'm so tired of people defending GaGa's musical moves. People complain that Madge borrowed from Marilyn, old Hollywood etc which she ACKNOWLEDGED. The difference is GaGa has not only ripped off Madonna's looks and videos (although citing her as an inspiration) she blatantly ripped off a song which to me is much different b/c GaGa said the comparisson was "retarded" when anyone that knows music could hear the melody and chord progression were essentially the same. Haters will claim Madge borrowed from the Staple Sisters Respect Yourself which only has a few similar lyrics while GaGa bascially took Madge's song and changed the words. I LOVE this mash-up and can't wait to see the Queen perform it live.
