'Idol's' Ace Young, Diana DeGarmo are engaged

"American Idol" crowned a winner on Wednesday's finale, but the show also managed to pack in a live marriage proposal for season 5 "Idol" star Ace Young and season 3 alum Diana DeGarmo.

Young and DeGarmo, who got to know each other while performing in a 2010 Broadway production of "Hair," were in the audience of Wednesday's show when host Ryan Seacrest called them to the stage.

They were both looking "very pretty," as Seacrest told the pair, who moved in together last summer.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FidTR0fWd74]

Young, 31, said a few words about how "Idol" - and, we suppose, "Idol's" stage - has "always been home" to the two of them, so he figured the season 11 finale "would be the perfect place to ask a simple question."

As Seacrest called for the lights to be dimmed, Young turned to his girlfriend and said, "Diana, we have conquered Broadway together. We have created all your new music together ... I have a way to make this fun last forever. I love you to death, you're my best friend, I want to make this last forever and I will do anything in my power to have the most ... amazing life together, if you will have me."

And then, at a glacial pace befitting of an "Idol" big reveal, Young asked for DeGarmo's hand in marriage. The 24-year-old singer/actress, who was emotional throughout the proposal, said yes. (Can you imagine if she'd said no on live TV? Talk about a blow to the ego.)

We're guessing this wasn't totally planned, as DeGarmo was shaking by the time her husband-to-be slipped the rock on her left hand, but we're sure there are some cynics out there who'd love to differ. Either way - congrats to the couple!

I can't believe it I thought we were supposed to be watching AMERICAN IDOL not another proposal on TV. I thought it was disgracing to the winner. Let them have their moment and you can do your thing somewhere else.

I hate huge public proposals like this, it's unfair to the person being proposed to. They can't give an honest answer. Even if she didn't want to marry him, as the article says, she wouldn't dare say no. She really didn't have much of a choice.

That bum couldn't afford a ring so I guess he had to mention the jeweler to get a free ring. I call divorce in 2 years.

Wow, what happened to both of them. He looks way better in short hair – maybe he has it for the show he's in, and she looks old. Also, what the heck was going on with Fantasia? That outfit was unbelieveable and not in a good way, and the long-haired wig – ugh! What was worse was the terrible injustice that she and Joshua did to Elton's John's song by literally screaming the whole thing. It was like they were trying to see who could scream the loudest. It was deplorable! The best song Joshua did on the entire show was "Imagine" when he showed restraint and actually sang the song.

Ace looks like he's been living under a bridge. Diana looks like a drag queen. Ace always seemed like a good-time player on his Idol run and Diana always seemed like a sweet, good girl. On the surface they seem a very odd pairing.

Anyone else feel like the whole product placement (where he got the ring) in the middle of the proposal completely took the romance out of his porposal? When I heard it, I totally missed the rest. A proposal is no place for a product placement. It was rather innappropriate. If I would have been her, I would have been annoyed with him that he felt his proposal to her wasn't important/special enough to keep a product placement out of.

I thought that it was real Cool for Ace to do that. I always liked him. I wanted him to win the year that he was on Idol. I'm very happy for them. Why should we judge and criticize? It's so easy to be Positive. It makes you feel good. TRY IT!!

I made a mistake voting for bush in his first term. He was a mess of a president. He made things look bad for Republicans now look at what we have in the white house

And yet another redneck with no brain chimes in. You say Bush was the start of our money woes, and yet you think that gives you a "free shot" at Obama. What a low grade moron.

Yeah...look at what we have....he finally GOT what Bush couldn't. He stopped the landslide economy caused by the Bush regime, he kept GM alive along with 1000's of jobs and more. He makes the GOP look like a bunch of sorry sad sacks that can do nothing but bicker amongst themselves for not having the gonads to do the same things to bring some sensibility to Wall Street, to make healthcare not something only for the rich (yeah...do you complain when you're forced to buy car insurance...no..then shut up)...and despite the full frontal assaut of the Teabaggers and GOP saying "no" to everything, still is managing to get the economy to turn around even when Europe is falling apart. Yeah...look what we got. Could be Mitt-man who closes factories and bankrolls millions at the same time he ships those jobs overseas.

I'm really not that happy with Phillip Phillips winning, he's a one trick pony albeit has it's niche and volcano that was really good... but Jessica is pure diva and has a range of sound that will take her far. I'm thinking the voting public has a lot young girls. The show had way too much screaming from several people known and unknown to me, not really good screaming either....I think this was NOT one of the better shows or outcomes, but in the end "winning" Idol doesn't really count against what happens next...

If Phillip is a one trick pony, then so are Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Dave Matthews, John Fogerty, Rod Stewart and any number of superstars who are mostly known for their style than anything else. But all of them are talented musicians, as is Phillip. A unique style won't get you as far as it's taken these folks without talent.

....and yet, Bill Clinton had the highest approval rating of any president in history.......had the lowest unemployment rate.....had the lowest debt. All in all, a great president. He made Bush Sr. a one term president and humiliated Bob Dole in 1996.

Besides that, he was so cute and romantic about proposing!
