Gary Oldman joining 'RoboCop' remake

It looks like perennial bad guy Gary Oldman will play the mad scientist in the highly anticipated remake of "RoboCop."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “The Dark Knight Rises” star will play opposite cyborg cop Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) in the upcoming MGM vehicle.

A sci-fi film originally built around Arnold Schwarzenegger, “RoboCop” is about a police officer who narrowly escapes death by morphing into a cyborg.

Oldman will play Norton in the new version, the man responsible for RoboCop's metamorphosis. Only he finds himself stuck between a rock and a hard place once the deed is done: should he stay loyal to the corporation he works for or help the machine retrace its human roots?

The robotic film - which has a tentative release date of summer 2013 - could begin shooting in Toronto as early as September, THR reports.

The Oscar nominee’s got his hands full until then: his next role is as Commissioner Gordon in "The Dark Knight Rises," which hits theaters July 20.

Also, his new period crime flick, "Lawless," co-starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy, just debuted at the Cannes Film Festival.

I love Gary Oldman, but I have to break it to you, remakes are not 'highly anticipated'.

You need to do your homework. Peter Weller was the original Robocop. Arnie was nowhere in it.

This guy is terrific in everything! One of my favorite Oldman roles is Reznov in two of the Call of Duty games.

The original RoboCop movie had nothing to do with Conan the Republican. Did the author mean that it was originally conceived as an Arnold vehicle? (It ultimately starred Peter Weller.) However, the original RoboCop director, Paul Verhoeven, made another great movie with Arnold, "Total Recall."

Oldman used to confuse VOLUME with acting. His LOUD, hysterical performances in 'The Professional' and 'The Fifth Element' were distracting...at best.

Well the director tried to cast Rutger Hauer and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the role but their schedules wouldn't allow it. Veuhauen or whatever his name is apparently REALLY wanted one of the two of them but relented once they had the early versions of the suit built and realized that the larger actors wouldn't be able to move well enough in the gear.

I did so many roids and popped so many pills back in the day I can't even remember being in Robocop. I guess I'll be back!

" Only the Shaddow knows for sure" Tony Curtis used to say making me laugh. Yes, this actor, well known as Serious Black in Harry Potter and The Prisoner Of Azkibon" also known for playing the mark in the plot of JFK with Kevin Costner, I think, born the same day as Matthew Broderick, and Aries, Born April 21st, – and has gotten increasingly more handsome and more famous everytime he does anything in entertainment, is yet another hopeless romantic crush of mine. Woe is me, right? I know...I think too big. At least I think and grow rich. Could be worse. Could be the other way. Thank God it isn't. Just deep thoughts....

If those are deep thoughts, I'd hate to hear you ramble. Seriously (and his name wasn't "Serious" by the way) can you TRY to make sense? English better not be your first language, 'cause if it is, you fail BIG-TIME!

Arnold was not in Robocop. He was the Terminator. Robocop was played by Peter Weller. I think it should be cool, as long as he isnt as slow as the original. I don't think the original could catch an 80 year old with a walker

Actually, in the DVD director's commentary, Rutger Hauer and Arnold Schwarzenegger were both considered for the role before Peter Weller...but they were too large to move around in the bulky Robocop suit.

You're right, Arnold was not in Robocop, but he was planned to be. However, it was decided that Arnold, being an already large and muscular man, would look huge wearing a Robocop suit, so the film makers when would a more lean-built actor, Peter Weller.

      (LOL !)
Very funny ! Yeah, he was imposing but looked so slow when he moved. Shoulda got the run-at-60mph option like Steve Austin did.

Robocop doesn't need a remake. Just make a sequel and call it Robocop 4: A New Hope.

Oldman is a great actor and finally the suits in Hollywood figured it out. He should have been nominated for Oscars multiple times before his first nomination.
