Tia Mowry not returning to 'The Game'

What happens when the star of one of your most popular shows exits stage left?

It looks like BET is about to find out.

On Wednesday, Tia Mowry – the lead character on one of BET's most-watched shows, “The Game," announced she would not be returning next season, leaving a huge void in a storyline built largely around her.

And, adding possible insult to injury, rumor has it her husband on the show - another equally pivotal character played by Pooch Hall - may be leaving too. (He has yet to make a formal announcement.)

The actress, who has played Melanie Barnett on the scandalous football-centered drama since it debuted on The CW in 2006 (and was later picked up by BET), informed fans of the bad news Wednesday via Twitter.

“Just wanted to let all my fans know that I will not be returning to 'The Game' for season 6,” she said. “It was an incredible run and I had lots of fun."

Though that was the extent of the 33-year-old’s official comment on the matter, a source close to the actress reportedly told the Hollywood Reporter that her departure was a mutual decision between Mowry and the network.

BET has not yet commented on the matter, though it renewed the series for a sixth season back in April.

But this certainly won’t be the last you see of Mowry: the actress and her pregnant twin, Tamera Mowry-Housley, have their own reality show on the Style Network, "Tia & Tamera."

Tia Mowry also released her book, “Oh Baby!,” on Tuesday, and will reportedly star in the upcoming ABC Family holiday special, “The Mistle-Tones.”

Have a question for Tia or Tamera? Now's your chance to ask with an iReport! Send in your questions by Thursday, May 24 at 12 p.m. ET, and you could see an answer on CNN.com!

I believe that EVERYTHING must change in order to grow and prosper. Kudos for taking a leap to know when it is time to GET OUT and MOVE ON. What I don't like is the THE GAME has a huge fan base and that is the only African American show that people watch faithfully. The show took a turn when they introduced Derwin/Janay with a new baby out of a breakup/wedlock and with Derwin/Melanie to start their lives beginning with marriage. As a storyline writer, that was not going to work and eventually would lead to negative ratings. To add to it...Not having Kelly there was messed up...Jason had no partner. Tasha needed a REAL man to control her or put her in check. Malik with the alcohol and drugs wasn't a good look. The writers made the cast and black people on look bad on a whole ALTHOUGH they dealt with real issues and kept it entertaining. However, this decision on Mowry does effect the cast and crew jobs and livelyhood.

They put limits on how long these comments can be but if not I'd state facts that would make u just go away with ur tail between ur legs. Sometimes ppl get misguided informations and run with it as u r doing. No matter who came into office after Bush would have been able to fix the problems of this country. The sad fact is sum ppl will continue to blame Obama 5, 10, 15 years from now 4 things he never had control over in the first place. U r, in my opinion, very misguided.

This comment is for observer obviously you started observing the issues with our country AFTER obama came into office. i just wish everyone would stop blaming him for everything! there was plenty that was screwed up wayyyyyy before he came along. question if i allowed my dog to come to your house and s*** for 4 or 8 years how long would it take you to clean it up forget about racial issues but in my opinion the country was in better shape when clinton was in office! by the way i am a proud black female and all im saying is he's doing what he can considering how bush left us. now this gay marriage stuff thats another subject!

Bush is the reason for this countries problems not Obama. Clinton left a 240 billion surplus when he left office. Bush left this country trillions of $$$'s in debt. A lot of ppl want to blame Obama for Bushs' BS. Bush & his dad should be in jail for what they've done and continue to do and get away with. Mittens will be exactly like them if elected. He like the Bush's will be for himself and how he can keep and put more $$ in his pocket no matter the cost to the rest of Americans.

    • Observer

clinton's surplus was due to "creative accounting". If you want to trace the root of our problems, you must go back to Jimmy Carter, who forced banks to make home loans to people they knew could not pay the money back. I hope for change in 2012, because the man that's in there now is driving us right over the cliff. If you can't see it, you're just a liberal stooge who believes the media hype. Wake up.

I love the fact race is always brought up in anything...presidents have been blamed for things not going right since george washington was elected as our very first president. Being female gives me more right to complain about the injustices and discriminations in this world more than any. Pick up a history book some time and read about womens suffrige...think I spelled that right...black men were given the right to vote before any woman in the nation. Look it up....so before the race card is thrown into play....there r pleanty of shows....with white people that r just as boring and pointless that should be taken off of the air. I have caught the show a couple of times but not very interesting...but neither is the menatalist! Too bad the closer was taken off the air....now that show was great! Omg and the tyler perry shows...bloody hillarious. Come on guys...the planet is getting too small to keep squabbling over such petty differences.

i don't see why either blacks or whites are arguing about the name of the network... as a black female i first want to note that it is baed of the fact that it was created as a music network that gave black artist the chance to showcase their music that other networks (mtv and vh1) would not show. it wasn't created to isolate withes it was created to include blacks... if people would just take the time to put things in a google search and research the topic that they are confused about instead of creating ignorant judgements about it the world would be a better place... i do see how someone would find it offensive to read the name of the network and feel like its racism but its history... since the network is thriving the name won't be changed and its just a part of music history.

Why can we not simply remain people, human beings, men, people, and I.N.D.I.V.I.D.U.A.L.S????? This is very upsetting to view the comments on here about race this and race that....I do comprehend freedom of speech 100% and all of our psychologies are made up from different backgrounds but can't anyone see that this discrimination, misunderstanding (or lack of understanding at all), continues to breed hate and violence amongst us all??!!! How can many of you not care? You must want war, anger, rage, and violence in your life, think about it. I think it's okay to dislike someone from a certain encounter but stop generalizing an entire ethnicity because of your past or from what you saw on the news last week. It's hurtful to all of us, try to understand INDIVIDUALS, not the entire Caucasian, African-American, Asian, Latino, Orange, Yellow or Pink Race....

u could still keep Tia's character but your gonna have to pull some strings especially if Pooch agrees to do another season what they could do is keep the character but instead of Tia playing Melanie have her twin sister Tamera play Melanie but they're gonna have to wait until Tamera has her baby. That's what I think BET should do because if they completely write off the character the show will not be the same

I think The Game got really ghetto, really quick. It started off the first two years being ok but after it got picked up by BET it started to go in a whole different direction. Barack Obama's fault:
      1) Quadrupled the deficit in the first 18 months in office
      2) Stagnated the economy with bogus stimulus plans
      3) Created so much uncertainty in the private sector that companies stopped hiring or laid people off
      4) Tripled the cost of health care with Obamacare
Obama needs to be defeated in November if our country is going to pull out of this nose-dive.

Can't say I blame her or Pooch. Who wants to watch "ballers" that ain't "ballin"...the show obviously has a very low budget. The original version had a real locker room, since BET took over they only shoot the lockerroom scenes in a tight corner that looks like it was made in shop class - there aren't even lockers, just shelves. Hell, Tasha lives in an extra-regular ass hotel room and Tia and Pooch's home looks like any suburban house in Atlanta. Damn...BET sucks the life out of everything it touches.
