'How I Met Your Mother's' season finale...wait for it

After flashbacks, flash-forwards and pointless (yet hilarious) tales of friendship, “How I Met Your Mother” managed to tie up its seventh season in a pretty little bow.

Like, the kind of bow you might see on, say, a wedding gown…

(This is the part where you stop reading if you don’t want to know what happened last night on the CBS sitcom’s highly anticipated, one-hour season finale.)

“The Magician’s Code” begins in Atlantic City, as an inebriated Marshall and Barney try to find a way back to NYC to witness the birth of Marshall and Lily’s baby boy.

Barney attempts to steal a motorcycle while Marshall stumbles up two stairs and watches Animal Planet on an ATM. (Like you’ve never been drunk before.)

In NYC, Lily can’t go to the hospital until her contractions are four minutes apart, so she asks Ted and Robin to tell stories and distract her in the meantime.

From the tale of the cursed pants to that time they decided to dress as the “Breakfast Club” for Halloween but forgot to coordinate their outfits (they all showed up as Judd Nelson), the short stories were hilarious.

My personal favorite: “Where does that door go?” It’s funny because the door leads to a closet that Ted, Barney, Robin and Lily hide in before scaring the crap out of a curious Marshall. (Maybe you had to be there.)

And then there’s Ted’s thoughtful baby announcement. I could summarize the hilarity, but I wouldn’t do it justice. Might as well just click here and see it for yourself. (I love when they do things like that!)

Back in Atlantic City, Barney and Marshall eventually hop on a bus of college seniors headed for Buffalo. Marshall gets to the hospital just in time to see his son being born. And Baby Marvin, named after Marshall’s late father, has “the coolest middle name of all time,” according to the gang. It’s Wait for it … No, really, that’s it. It was Barney’s idea.

Marvin Waitforit Erickson also helped mend Robin and Ted’s friendship, which has been on the rocks since he declared his love for her … again. At the hospital, Robin rips into Ted, the way only a true friend would, and tells him he dates the wrong women. She urges him to call Victoria, the only appropriate woman he’s ever dated.

Victoria eventually shows up to the bar wearing a wedding gown. She’s supposed to be getting married later that day. But, as someone who has been left at the altar, Ted doesn’t take kindly to a runaway bride. He attempts to take her back to the church, but they end up driving off into the sunset together.

We know Victoria isn’t the mother of Ted’s children. (He meets his future wife at Barney’s wedding.) But I’m not mad at the writers for bringing her back. Maybe Ted needs closure before he (and we) can meet “the one.”

Meanwhile, Barney is thankful to still have Quinn in his life. They head off for Hawaii, but TSA has other plans. Barney gets stopped at security for having an unidentified box in his luggage. However, he can’t reveal what’s in the box because of “Magician’s Code.” Long story short: Barney magically opens the locked box to reveal (another box, a pot, a blooming flower) an engagement ring. Quinn says yes.

A little ways down the road … at Barney’s wedding … it’s Robin who’s dressed in white. That’s right, Barney and Robin are getting married. Chills.

What did you think of “How I Met Your Mother’s” season finale? Are you pleased to see Barney and Robin together again? What do you think of Ted’s decision to ride off into the sunset with Victoria? And how cute is Baby Erickson?!

Barney's College age sister, mentioned in the episode when Barney met his stepmom and younger brother is the mother of Ted's kids. It would only make sense because Barney's dad said he had a sister in college and Ted's future wife was in a college economics class as he mentioned. Barney's sister would of course come to his wedding where she would meet Ted and they would get married. There is no possibility of Robin running away with Ted.

I like this idea. A lot. Also I do hope but Robin and Barney end up together. But Ted did mention to his children that this wedding went horribly wrong. So sadness 🙁

I was so disappointed to hear Barney and Robin will marry. They are totally wrong for each other. I believe the right move for the show is to keep them both single. Barney's main source of humor is from his freewheeling ways. Robin has always been too tough and independent to ever settle for a corporate playboy. They would both be able to lead full, happy lives without marrying each other and compromising their values. Ted is the sweet one, let him get married to the woman of his dreams.

what is the matter with you people. the writers TOLD US- ROBIN IS MARRYING BARNEY! There are no tricks, they gave us the answer, stop trying to twist the show more than it already is. People that still wanted Robin to be the mother- not only did they tell us she wasn't in the first episode, but if you watch the show, you'll be 100% sure she wasn't in Ted's wrong Economics class, and 100% sure she wasn't roomates with Cindy, and she was in Marshall and Lilly's new apartment on the night of St. Patty's Day. Watch the past seasons people. Sorry for my tangent but reading these was hard.

what is wrong with you people? According to the date you´ve wrote this comment you saw the season finale already. Its obvious that Barney marries Quinn....obvious after you have seen the last 4 episodes of season 8!! Furthermore, it says "a little way down the road" before you see Robin in a wedding dress. So that means, thats whats happening at the end of season 9....Ted marries Victoria, and Robin probably this guy she once embarressed in the clothing shop!!!! Amateurs

They also said that Robin marries Don. So when exactly did they say that Robin and Barney get married? never happened. They put them both in the church the way they did to make it look that way. Barney will marry Quinn and Robin will marry Don.

BARNEY AND ROBIN ARE GETTING MARRIED LIKE IT OR NOT! There won't be a double wedding or any of this dumb stuff you are saying! Ted and Victoria aren't getting together either! SO to close Barney marries Robin. At the wedding Ted meets the mother, did I lose anyone?! HIMYM serves up twists but, the writers WON'T change anything that they have planned for years!

Seriously...in this forum is so much crap!!!!! Why do you think Barney is going to marry Robin??? Because you have seen her in the last sequence in a wedding dress?? Well, havent you noticed the "little way down the road" in the screen before you see her in the dress??? Its obvious that Robin is going to get married in the next season....and DEFINITELY not to barney or Ted.....because he already tells his kids in the FIRST EPISODE "thats how I met your aunt robin"!!!! Robin is going to marry the guy she once embarressed in a clothing shop, and later meets again in a club when barney and his dad gettin wasted. later that episode you see the guy on the street telling a friend that he saw the girl again but probably never again because she is engaged, and thats probably it...but then the teller says in the background that it wasnt the last time!!!

In the beginning of Magician's Code Part II, they show the front of the church and enter the scene identified as Barney's wedding. It's NOT raining outside the church.

At the end of the show, they show the front of the church again before showing Robin as a bride. This time, it IS RAINING outside the church.

(Maybe the yellow umbrella will surface at Robin's wedding where it is raining....)

I think I am on to something here.- thanks to my DVR and OCD.....

I think the writers rushed these last two episodes ...they are like politicians thinking that we are all stupid and will believe anything. The actors should be ashamed and the show should be canceled now to help everyone save face and have a few good laughs when remembering the show. Let's start a new drinking game and count the flaws and mistakes in the last two episodes...never mind the poorly written script and attempt to jump to the future with a lame ending. I hope someone with the show reads this.

I could swear that in a previous episode, Ted made mention that Robin didn't end up with him or Barney. Also, they have already flashed back to this episode's wedding and Ted was the best man. So the groom can't be a random. I am dying to see this twist. It can't be Barney and Robin. It doesn't make sense and it would be lame.

People saying that a double wedding is too tricky and underhanded for the HIMYM writers are misguided, I think; it's totally something they would do, with Ted as the Best Man for both Robin and Barney. I'm not saying that's what I actually think happens, but I don't put anything past them. They give themselves story frames and then fill in the details later as they see fit.

At the time they were just not mature enough to be in the relationship.. they have had time to really grow up, especially with the pregnancy scare.. and now know what they want.. and I think they will find it in each other once both of their relationships end badly.. yes, i'm a hopeless romantic.. so what! HIMYM season 8 cannot get here fast enough!!

knowing the relationship that Ted had with Victoria in season 1, that will probably end up exploding in his face again. But finding out that Barney and Robin are getting married, that is the worst idea anyone could ever think of. If anyone can remember in season 5 that when Robin and Barney dated, they had trouble defining their relationship, along with Robin having real trust issues with barney and that eventually they realize that they are too different that they nearly killed each other trying to be more compatible with each other, which eventually leads me to think that their wedding will not be. That is why they shouldn't get married. They are NOT compatible.

Seriously??? How could you EVER think Quinn was a good match for Barney. He never would have given Quinn a second thoughts if has wasn't still heartbroken over Robin. Robin and Barney are perfect counterparts. Their compatibility has been clear since season one's Zip, Zip, Zip when Robin suited up for a night as Barney's bro. They are so similar (i.e. independent, career-minded, commitment phobes). Their relationship didn't work the first time around because they were trying to imitate Marshall and Lily's relationship- that being the only good relationship that either of them had ever known. Both characters needed to discover what a serious relationship was before they could reconnect...and this is exactly what the writers did. This show is brillant because it echos real-life and adds some much needed humour to it. BRAVO writers for staying true to the continuity of a love story that started season 1 episode 14. Cheers to Robin and Barney!

I think that they should have made teds decision on the mother mom clear. Where was the yellow umbrella?? I would have been ok with it (because that was a beyond epic episode) if Ted had just been like "and that's how I met your mother" and she walks in with a yellow umbrella or something

I thought the episode was weak at best, a few funny moments in some of the flash backs, but overall it wasn't that funny, Victoria is just another one of Ted's GFs who isn't going to work out (we saw that happen already) and we made no progress towards finding the mother. Last season gave us all hope that this season would end with Barney's wedding and maybe we'd finally meet the mother. This is just another lame attempt to drag out this show for more seasons than it should have.

I have been a viewer of HIMYM since the beginning. I absolutely love the twists and turns of the show. You never really know what is real or what is going to happen with all the characters. I am hoping that Barney and Robin are just another twist. They made a horrible couple, and even with maturity and time they are that couple you know will eventually get divorced. As much as I thought that Barney could be a bachelor forever, Quinn and Barney actually make a good couple. I like Victoria as a character, but lets be honest Ted can't be with someone just like himself, they would be like two lost puppy's. Victoria showing up in a wedding dress is way too convenient to be the real deal, its like he took what he could get, and gave up on true love. Ted is way too girly to be with someone like Victoria, he needs someone more like Robin, who is more like a dude.

really funny episode but come on producers get with it nobody wants barney and robin together but you..in the first season its ted who brings robin into the group, they were fun when they were dating, her and barney just that annoying couple nobody wants to watch. And if after all the times of robin telling ted she didnt want to get married and then is going to marry barney? such a slap in the face to ted. oh and victoria needs to go. And quinn and barney make a very believable couple much more than robin and barney but obviously lilly and marshall hold that honor.

I always thought Barney married Robin. The mother will be Barney's half sister. We know the mother is musical, she probably got it from Barney's dad who used to be a roadie. We know Ted and his family live in the same neighborhood as Barney's father. It makes sense.

i love how half you people are "upset barney is marrying robin and not quinn." i'm sure the writers don't really care if you are upset by it or not. if you are upset with it then don't watch the show anymore or go write your own episodes for you too watch the way you want it. i just don't understand how you can not like what they are doing. there is a reason you have fallen in love with this show like i have and it's these guys writing it and all the contrast in characters. and no one knows exactly what is going to happen until HIMYM is over which will be a sad sad day.

Because the show is no longer about the characters. It's become a meta-story where the focus is on how the writers will work their way out of the current twist they've create and what new twist they'll throw in next. When the show started the characters were believable and their personalities seemed to lead them in directions, and they grew and changed as people in intelligent ways. Now they are just puppets of the writers, going in whatever direction the writers' plot twists send them, whether or not that makes sense for their personalities – and stagnating as people, not growing or developing much at all.

This is intended for CBS and not a discusion. I respect others opinions and have not interest in starting a back and forth. thx.
I have watched HIMYM since the begining. I own every season on DVD. I purchase every episode on Playstation Network as it comes out. I have spent the last 7 years loving this show. I have never written in about any tv show or any other form of multi media entertainment before. I am VERY disapointed that the choice was made to have barney marry Robin instead of Quin! I can honestly say that I plan to not return as a viewer for season 8. I understand that HIMYM is all about twist endings and I have sat through several that I did not agree with but this takes the cake. I had hoped that once, just once we the viewers could have an ending we enjoyed. I feel that Quin was a much better match and have enjoyed her charecter more in the few episodes she has been in more than the 7 seasons that robin has endured. I like the robin charecter but Quin and Barneys chemistry was amazing. I realize that this will fall on deaf ears and will mean absolutly nothing. I can only hope that enough fans write in to get this abortion of an ending remedied! This ending is INSULTING

Gary I totally agree with EVERYTHING you said. I can't believe its robin and not quinn, I have been over the top in love with this show and I know it sounds sad to write but I'm actually hurt by this. Barney and Quinn looked good together and she was perfect for him and from now on it's going to be hard for me to stop watching it but I just don't feel the same now I know that Barneys marrying Robin. I'm actually in shock and I can't beleive I'm not going to be able to watch it no more.

Craig Thomas (the co-creator) confirmed that Barney and Robin WILL get married. The wedding day may not go quite as planned, but Barney and Robin are definitely going to be hitched by the end of that wedding.

The mother is going to be Barney's half sister Carly... just you wait. They said she is away at school, and Ted accidentally taught that Econ class that she was in, lol.

I thought it was a good episode. Liked the stories, loved the AWESOME middle name! I didn't like how they brought Victoria back though, that bit should have stayed burried. We already know Victoria is not the mother so its kind of a lame way to fill in season 8. As far as Robin and Barney, a friend of mine and I figured that out a while ago. They have been toying with it especially with the whole "Did I pick the right tie Ted?" comment Barney makes in one of the flash-forwards. I don't think they should have revieled it yet though. I think they could have had a lot more fun toying with the whole Quinn thing, but now that Robin is out of the bag, and they've pretty much set that situation in stone, the Quinn thing is about next to dead. Overall, definitely not their best finale, but it was a good episode.

If they would have made Victoria the mother, I would have stopped watching the show.

How do you know it's Barney marrying Robin? Maybe 2 different weddings?

Also – can you believe Ted almost gave up on Victoria....jeez...that would have REALLY upset me!

Future Ted has never said that:
    1) Robin and Barney were married.
    2) Barney's wedding with Robin went through.

It is tricky but I think they won't get married. Or they got divorced after??

i dont think they will go through with the wedding. he says it went horrribly wrong... i hope it does go horribly wrong. robin is such a hypocrit. ugh i hate her if she marries barney. barney should be quinn. barney and robin have no chemistry. theyve managed to turn barney into ted. barney shouldnt get married at all. that's what makes him awesome. he should be in a committed relationship though. he's really boring when he's with robin.

I hate to burst everyones bubble but Robin and Barney do get married. Co-Creator Craig Thomas has an interview with TVGuide that states they will get married. http://www.tvguide.com/News/HIMYM-Finale-Barney-Bride-Craig-Thomas-1047516.aspx

How can we be sure that the wedding that Robin was the bride at was in fact Barney's? It may very well be Robin marrying a new character we are unaware of.

I thought it was... wait for it..... excellent! Not sure about Victoria though. I like her but we already know she's not the mother and Ted broke up her wedding, which he said he couldn't do.
