Report: Britney Spears signs on for 'X Factor'

The speculation surrounding Britney Spears' rumored "X Factor" deal continued Thursday as reports suggest that the pop star has signed a contract to officially be a judge on the reality competition.

According to E!, Spears is set to join  season 1 holdovers Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid when "The X Factor" returns to Fox in the fall.

The site reports that the pop star signed a deal this week to get $15 million for one season. A source tells E! that there's been "a lot of back and forth over the past few weeks as they negotiated small details, but she's on. It's all completed and Britney is beyond excited."

Spears' name has been one of the constants on the ever evolving list of stars Simon Cowell's said to be considering for the show. Earlier this year, season 1 "X Factor" judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul were dismissed from the show, and since then Cowell and his fellow judge Reid have said that they were looking primarily for two women who already had that "X" factor.

LeAnn Rimes, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry and Janet Jackson have all been mentioned as rumored options in addition to Spears, although Jackson confirmed that she had to pass.

Neither Spears' rep nor Fox is currently commenting on the reports that the pop star's sealed the deal, but if it's true, that would leave one spot open for another judge. (Cowell's also said he's on the hunt for two new hosts to replace prior host Steve Jones.)

What do you think about Spears possibly joining "X Factor"?

Britney is a great dancer and entertainer. She also has a good rep in the business as being kind to people and treating them well, even after all she has been though. Probably the same reason she got taken advantage of by the bloodsuckers. She lost it and got it back together, she got married, divorced and re-married. She has 2 kids. In other words, girl has lived it!! She knows what it takes and what is important. I wish her all the best and think she's a pretty amazing person to pull herself though like that. Not too many people can come back like that.

Why stop at Britney? Simon should latch on to Carrot Top! Or Andrew Dice Clay! Or the Situation!! Or even Gary Busey! Pick one of them, Simon, for their well-respected, demented, in-your-face opinions to balance the show out!

I know that I defiantly skip watching the X-Factor.
Used to watch Idol until Cowell left and don't watch that one anymore either.
The judging is sickening there and there is no way I watch Britney Spears who sings like a chipmunk judge others.
Bye Bye Idol, Bye Bye X-Factor

Spears as a judge of anything... she doesn't even have full control of her life and personal business. The people being judged have exponentially more talent than her as a "judge." This is nonsense. Maybe she will use autotune when she talks too.

I thought she was gone with the crazy behavior and time in the hospital, but in the midst of all that, she, largely by herself, produced a best selling album!

Since she was a child, she focused on entertaining people, and perhaps missed out on developing a few other skills. And, perhaps she got used to a team managing and supporting her. And, being bipolar is a challenge as well. So, the first time in her life that she is on her own, and I think that in spite of being married, she was largely on her own, she made mistakes and she seems to have learned from them. And, apparently she was drugged by a guy she let into her life, too.

And she was and is an amazing and successful entertainer in spite of all that's gone on in her personal life. And, now, her personal life seems very on track, too. Good luck on X-Factor!

Shouldn't you know how to sing to be a judge? O wait JLo is a judge also. She's a great dancer, but why is she a judge of singers??? Isn't there a dance show out? Oops I totally forgot knowing how to sing means nothing nowadays, silly me....

Do you judge the singers when they perform? Of course you do. And are you a professional singer of any sort? No, of course you're not. If you were famous and had sold millions of records, you might be asked to a judge on the show, too. Get over yourself, even I'll tune into this dumb, copy cat show at least once to see Brit. Me and millions of others.

Most record producers cannot sing yet know a good/great singer when they hear one... you don't have to be capable of something to have the knowledge and expertise to know when that something is good... most (if not all) NHL hockey coaches could never do even 5% of what great NHL players can do (and that applies to every sport) so does your comment then in turn apply to them? Based on your statement I would assume the hockey coach needs to be as good as the player to "qualify" as a judge of his/her ability. This is not a defense of Britney as judge on X Factor... this is a response to what was a stupid comment.

Funny how so many people are so negative about this. I don't listen to Britney Spears and I am not a fans of hers. But just the mere fact that she's been very successful in the business does qualify her to be in this position whether we like her or not. I'm not sure whether a lot of us readers have ever performed or been involved with any serious production. It can't be easy doing what she's done successfully. It must take a lot of hard work, luck, and dedication and certainly SOME talent to reach her level of success. It's very easy to discredit someone based on one's preference. But if we look deeper into what's really involved in getting to the point in her profession (in a sea of millions who want to do similar), then I think we will appreciate her efforts regardless of whether we like her or her genre of music and performance.

The show was fixed the first year anyway. Melanie Amaro was supposed to win from the start. That's why she was let go and brought back...so that she would stand out above the rest. She was one of Simon's discoveries before the show started and he just used the show as a platform to launch her carreer. The others never had a chance.

I am very disappointed with Mr. Cowell's decision. I was hoping for a more mature
angle of judging talent, but it did not happen. Sorry, Simon, guess I will be taking

And Simon Says (ha!) that he hates Jennifer Lopez, and yet, he picks Britney Spears of ALLLLL the talented people out there? I guess at some point, you get "hard up" and take whoever you can.

I'll give her a chance. I'll watch, just to see how she does. She just may surprise us. I just think that someone who's isn't all that great in music herself, shouldn't be judging or critiquing others. I think the *younger* audience love her, but young adults and adults, not so much. WE know what talent is.

  31. NOT disparaging like everyone else

There are many judgemental and comdemnatory comments about Britney on this page (and elsewhere). Obviously, none of the commenters have ever worked in the entertainment industry. So far, she has had a very successful 13 years as a performing artist. She has a true pop star quality that is hard to resist. You don't get to be in a position of where she is today with laziness or lacking talent. If you knew her career, you would understand that she leads, and doesn't follow. Go Brit!

Britneys success = lots of 12 year olds.

She cannot sing, she cannot write music, she is merely an image sold to the less-than-mature.

At first I just loved the show, lots of great talent ! Then, all we heard from the "judges" was childish arguing,
silly little bickering that was such a distraction. I would rather see Paula there than L.A. Reid, he was condescending,
rude, partial to his guys, and just an awful judge, awful!! Now we have NO plans to watch this year. L.A. Rude was
    so spot on!

Oh no! When Simon made the huge mistake of letting Melanie Amaro go, this is the same caliber of mistake. thank goodness he got his senses straight and brought her back. There are so many people out there that can do the job and ones that are respected. I don't think that of Brittaney. I wish her all the best in life and hope she continues on the right path but, as far as a judge goes........no thank you! I was so happy to hear that Nicole won't be back but now we have to deal with Brit? Yikes! Don't know if it's going from bad to worse, worse to bad or......

SO BASICALLY, SIMON JUST TRADED A DITZY, GIGGLY, AIRHEADED BRUNETTE NAMED PAULA FOR A DITZY, GIGGLY, AIRHEADED BLONDE NAMED BRITNEY.

NEITHER ONE OF THEM CAN FORM A COHERENT SENTENCE AND THEY'RE BOTH SUCH MARSHMALLOWS THAT NEITHER ONE CAN EFFECTIVELY CRITIQUE OR JUDGE.
