Mel Gibson: I've got a bit of a temper

Mel Gibson has admitted to a trait some probably presumed quite a while ago, thanks to the headlines: The actor has said he's got a bit of a temper.

Gibson made the admission Friday on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” after screenwriter Joe Eszterhas' release of what he says is a tape of Gibson ranting.

Eszterhas, who wrote a script for a film Gibson is working on about Jewish hero Judah Maccabee, also accused the actor of anti-Semitism in a nine-page letter.

Gisbon addressed the controversy on Leno's late night show Friday, opening with the crack, "You know, I love coming to 'The Tonight Show,' because when I get here and you tape me, you let me know you're going to do that up front!"

The recording Eszterhas released was said to be taped during a visit to Gibson's home in Costa Rica.

"Has it really come to the place that you can't blow off steam in your own home?" the actor asked Leno on Friday, seeming to refer to the reports of the audio. "The guy writes a nine-page letter, and if he (presumably, Eszterhas) put half as much time and effort and creativity and imagination into a screenplay, which he was supposed to write, as he did into that letter, we wouldn't be having this conversation."

Gibson also admitted to being "peeved" with Eszterhas and swearing at him because when Eszterhas did deliver the script, it was problematic enough that studio Warner Bros. rejected it, Gibson said. (Warner Bros. is owned by the same parent company as CNN.)

"It's kind of like you build a house, you hire a guy to put a roof on it, he comes over and eats lunch and talks about the roof, and then you get rained on all night," Gibson told Leno. "Wouldn't you be kind of peeved?"

Perhaps Leno was unaware, Gibson went on, “but I've got a little bit of a temper."

The past few years, which have included other public missteps for the actor, have been "like living in a bad B movie," he added. "From slipping on a banana peel in your driveway to sort of midnight phone calls ... How did I get here?! It is bizarre!"

he's an anti-semitic woman beater, no respect for him. If he was as devout as he claims, he wouldn't do half the things he's done to people.

Tyson is a woman beater. Brown is a woman beater, OJ is a woman beater. Go take a look at the faces they hit a few times. Now go see OX's face. Compare them, see the smirk? see any bruises, even ONE? How about a scratch? No, no swollen lips, no bruising, no scratches. Veneers can NOT be broken by being punched–ask a dentist. The tooth behind the veneer would be broken off. Were Ox's broken? Nope. Mel-NOT a woman beater.

I don't care what Mel says, this man is GENIUS! And you know all geniuses have that thin line. He is a brilliant actor and an even more brilliant director. I love him and I hope he continues to make movies. His personal beliefs have nothing to do with me.

If you had yourself taped at the ugliest times in your life, all of us would appear "horrible" We've all said things that sound bad in a fit of rage. Everyone has! But because they're stars they are not allowed to get mad. This is short sighted by most people. Actors are human like everyone else. They should be judged on what they do on the screen, not off. With that said, actors who are famous need to know that they have to take the bad with the good. They get the money, the fame, well they also get the camera in their living room.

The main thing that Mel is guilty of is speaking the truth. Unfortunately in the US one can only speak the truth if the one or group being spoken about is disliked by the masses.
Just look at the "FREEDOM OF SPEECH" people enjoyed during the Bush years.......

I have a bit of temper but as a woman, it's called being b*****. Any how, I'm not surprised that Mel Gibson is a bigot because he grew up in a country (Australiia) that treats its aboriginal people like crap.

A bit of a temper? If we believe the "bit" part, I suppose we can say that Hitler also had a "bit of a temper." Interesting that nobody takes Eszterhaus' side in this. Leno just let Gibson blather on about what a terrible writer and person the writer is. The fact is... Eszterhaus is one of the most experienced and in demand writers in Hollywood. He has written amazing movies and should be praised. Gibson should bow down and kiss the guy's feet.

Gibson's rants, plus is extra marital affair, cost him the good will and support of a large number of fans. Just look at his professional track record. Since his tirade against jewish people and the tape recorded shouting matches with his (then) girfriend, Gibson's movies have all been box-office bombs.

Mel Gibson's movie career is DOA. He might as well pack up his bags, head back to Australia, and buy a ranch with a large porch so he can spend the rest of his years in a rocking chair remembering the good old days when people actually had respect for him.

Think if your so called friends or family released all you angry rants to the public, I am sure they woul be awfully simmilar...I know that I have lost my cool on more than one occasion which resorted in screamin fit, and when I get behind incompitent drivers I see red and yes I do say some very explosive things about the driver in front of me that just cut me off...Does that make me mentally unstable, no it makes me human, and luck enough that my husband is not recording my every word. Give Mel a break he is not anti Gay, anti Jew, or anti Woman..he is a guy who wears his emotions on his sleave...better than botteling them all up and heading for a high tower.

The "Passion of the Christ" was absolutely true. The Jews delivered Jesus to Pilate because they could not lawfully put him to death themselves being under Roman occupation.
But Jesus forgave them even from the cross.

This isn't about temper it's about mental illness. I've had friends that knew him at his peak and all said what a great guy Mel was. He has a bipolar disorder and everyone has known it since he first came to Hollywood. Either he's off his meds or they aren't working. This is like saying a person's cancer is their fault. He has a condition that has ruined his career. Jodie Foster is considered all but a saint in the industry and when she stands behind you there's no one more respected. Gibson needs to see a doctor and everyone needs to cut him some slack.

I see the majority are willing to let the man be forgiven. It does not take belief in a god or a Jesus to live a decent life or be a good person. There is a little thing called common sense and common decency that makes regular folks NOT display disgusting diatribes about other religions. Poor Mel is not a religious man. Mel is a con artist, along with his father, who created the Church of I Do Nothing Wrong. As an actor, he has done well, has good smart-remark timing, and once was rather cute in the derriere. This is no longer the case. I stopped watching Mel years ago. His attraction waned as his alcoholism and egotism raged. There are no excuses for Mel's choices. He is simply a diseased mind disguised as an actor. He knows this. We all know this.

He (like I'm sure a lot of hollywood jerks) screamed at a screenwriter for not getting his script done on time. As for the misogynistic stuff about his ex, I would agree that this lady just glommed onto some crazy rich guy and then exploited him for all she could. Do we have to feel bad that he called her those names? I don't. She seems useless. Must we assume that all people are good and not trying to hurt their fellow human being? If we (I) confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us of All unrighteousness (sins). While we were yet sinners Christ died for us, you, and me.
"The spirits of the prophets are subject to the control of the prophets."
    1 Corinthians 14:32
Oh God, give us more of you in my (our)lives. Less of the darkness trying to take over within many even as Mel Gibsons powefull God-given message in the Passion of the Christ showed us just that. Yet, the light (Jesus) always has been and will be more powerfull than the darkness (devil). God is in control. His ways are better, if only we, I pray, will learn from our mistakes, humble ourselves, forgive and ask for forgiveness, then move on stronger than ever before! Never looking back.

It is interesting that in this list of comments, almost every single lady had a negative comment. It seems that they are not commenting about this subject but rather, are still hung up on some of the things that Mel said about his ex-wife. It always amazes me how women will stand up for another woman even when she is an obvious gold digger, opportunist predator. There is nothing wrong with Mel except his surroundings.

Watching all my days go by, waiting for my day to die, i will never wonder why, Cause on this day i'll learn to fly. if we had a war in this country how angry us Americans would know were dying. if youre not a follower but an informer lead Americans without discrimination. if youre a leader from any private or public business citizens pray for journalist Come in terms w/Lord Jesus Christ. theyre death is nearer. Gibson recognizes his shortcomings and that's a good sign he'll soon make the connection to the question he asked "How did I get here?" He seems like he's hyper and maybe bi-polar and has the tolerance for frustration of a five-year old.

I assume Mel Gibson, for whatever reason, is mentally ill. Therefore, the content of his remarks is unimportant, because he can't be talked out of his "views". I think he is brain-damaged, like those people yelling on street corners and in subways.

There is a certain element in show business that greatly admires hidden video and recordings. They are perverted and have decided that anything is acceptable as long as THEY are the ones doing it. If someone taped this person in his own home, he would be outraged. No one would because apparently he can't write a decent script. Mel Gibson's past is not the problem. This element that thinks none of the rules of basic decent etiquette should apply to them are the problem. I bet this writer doesn't get invited to very many private homes in Hollywood in the future.

And isn't it illegal to tape someone without them knowing it, but obviously he's not talented enough to have Warner Brothers approve his script. Whether it's Mel Gibson or any actor, this person went into someone's home to tape them and use it to get attention. I doubt he has much future in Hollywood.

      4) career over? – I think it is Eszterhazy whose career is at issue here; Mel Gibson has made some excellent films, and he will do it again
      5) I personally know an individual who was approached to do a Gibson film by Gibson, and it is going to be a great one (about forgiveness); Eszterhazy was unfortunately a dead-end diversion from it; Gibson does not need him or the Maccabbees to receive his own forgiveness

While I agree with the Christian perspective of not casting the first stone, I think it is clear enough that Mel"s temper is out of control and over the top. He has no self control with the people who should be first in his life. I truely believe that his wife deserved every cent that she received in her settlement for the untold abuses she endured at his hands. Lastly I believe that Mel is a good man at heart. He should stay away from alcohol and he would lose his temper much less I am guessing. I feel for his children who are learning that this is the way that a husband and father should treat those in his family. Mostly I feel sorry for Mel who has single handily distroyed his most precious relationships!

Today's "journalists" give people they agree with politically a pass on the same behaviors they villify those they disagree with for. The days when you could expect honesty and integrity from reporters of the news are gone. I have lost confidence in politicians, but not in America. "we the people" need to realize there are more of us than them. If you don't get off your a$$ and vote, you lose your right to complain about the government you get.

@god hater: I am sorry you feel that way, but I have evidence of God in my life too many times to be able to deny he exists. I personally know people who were completely healed when there was nothing the doctors could do. When these people were prayed over by different people continuously for 24 hours, somehow the cancer completely vanished. My own mother came out of a coma as our family prayed over her to be able to stick around long enough to meet her new grandson ( not born yet). 15 years later, she is still with us, nothing wrong with her except a little arthritis ( she is 82). You believe there is no God? I talk to Him every day. My life is not perfect, but my faith gets me through when nothing else works. I pray you find some faith of your own before your time comes.
