Watch: Trailer for Whitney Houston's 'Sparkle'

Producer T.D. Jakes was amazed by Whitney Houston's performance in this year's remake of the 1976 film "Sparkle," but unfortunately, the actress and singer herself won't be around to see it arrive in theaters.

Houston had just finished work on the movie, about a trio of sisters who have to face the difficulties that come along with fame as their singing careers take off in the Motown-era, when she passed away in February at the age of 48.

The film, loosely based on the story of The Supremes, centers on the musically gifted Sparkle, portrayed by "American Idol" winner Jordin Sparks in the 2012 version. Sparkle is raised along with her two sisters (portrayed by Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter) by their single mother (Houston) in Detroit when the three begin to form a girl group.

Houston's Emma Williams, as depicted in the trailer, had sought her own fame for her voice before showcasing her talent in the church choir, and lived something of a "cautionary tale."

Derek Luke's character Stix, who manages the girl group, tells Sparkle in the clip, "Maybe you'll be like your mom and never reach your goals, but don't fall short because you can't admit that you want it."

Cee Lo Green and Mike Epps also star in the feature, which arrives in theaters August 17.

After reading some these comments, I do not know how the parent raised such low-lifes in this world. There should not be message boards because it just shows that some people are a waste of life.

Her dying is the best thing that ever happened to this movie since no one would have cared if she didn't. Think "Glitter" by Mariah Carey...

I find it appalling that 'some' people (I use the term loosely based on what I've seen here) find it so easy to be mean-spirited, without apparently giving thought or pause to the fact that Whitney Houston was first and foremost a thinking, feeling human being with flaws - just like the rest of us. On the one hand, I'm sure the very people who are trashing her in death, enjoyed her music during her lifetime. Pot! Kettle! Pot Kettle. Engage the brain before the mouth, or in this case, before the fingers. Similarly, if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all – invariably, what you say says far more about you than the trash you spew about others – others, you did not and do not know.

The only reason people have any interest in this movie or that the press is paying any attention to it is becuase of Whitney's passing. If she were still alive, nobody would even give a damn about this movie...

To those who are fans so beit, but the fact that we admire and pity someone who basically was a POP star whose light went out long ago. The only reason she is so well known today is that so many enjoy watching slow motion train wrecks played out in front of "live" cameras. Less than one week after she died a TRUE innovator in music died, yet nothing was mentioned but a small note. on some websites and even less live media outlets. His name was Ronnie Montrose, search that name, and you will find someone who helped shape music in many ways. Far more deserving that an average pop star..................

Before seeing this movie everyone should buy/rent/find the ORIGINAL SPARKLE movie. It was pure poetry and was used as a wonderful teaching lesson by my mom when I was a pre-teen. Our only complaint was that the original soundtrack was NOT used when the "album" came out. It was recorded by Aretha Franklin who was not in the movie. this devastated the youth who felt the spirit of the movie. Yes the movie Dreamgirls WAS loosely based upon the SUPREMES story. However, the CNN writer of this article is totally wrong. The ORIGINAL MOVIE, SPARKLE, WAS NOT loosely based upon the Supremes rise to fame. Irene Cara, Lonette McKee, Mary Alice (whose Oscar is LONG overdue), Dorian Harewood, Tony King, Philip Thomas and ALL of the cast members were SUPERB and never received their just accolades or awards. The ORIGINAL SPARKLE should be viewed by all teens interested in entering the movie/music/video business. History or HERSTORY does repeat itself if one does not listen and learn. Therein lies the tragedy. What's old, is new, yet again.

    • Agreed

I totally agree. The original Sparkle is nothing like the remake. Wish they would have went more into what happened to the sister who left home. Don't think I can support this even if this is the last time I can see Whitney Houston. Some things are worth preserving and totally redoing a moving is not my idea of fun. Especially when it changes the entire premise of the movie.

Sparkle was inspired (though you're right, not based) on the story of the Supremes, as a recent article by "Sparkle" co-creator Howard Rosenmann in The Daily Beast confirms.

I really wouldn't call the cast superb (McKee and Alice aside), however.
