R&B stars record tribute song for Trayvon Martin

R&B legend Chaka Khan, Eric Benet, Kelly Price, Kenny Lattimore and other celebrities are all rallying behind the parents of slain teen Trayvon Martin.

To show their support for the fallen youth whose death has captivated the nation, more than a dozen singers, musicians, actors and TV personalities came together on Sunday to record a special tribute song in his honor.

The celebs hit the legendary Henson studios in Hollywood for eight hours to re-record Khan’s “Super Life” from her 2007 album “Funk This,” reads a statement on Khan's website.

Tinseltown stars including Angela Bassett, Terry Crews and Boris Kodjoe showed up wearing white T-shirts with the words “Super Life - Fear Kills, Love Heals” emblazoned across the front, a nod to the circumstances behind the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, who was shot and killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida.

The song contains the lyrics, "A mama's cryin' 'Cause another young man has gone and died / He's not some statistic / He's another awesome destiny denied.” Also,"We take it all so lightly / How did we get so 'climatized / On the 9 o'clock news nightly / Genocide of babies / I can't believe my eyes. ... Right or wrong / I'm gonna live a super life."

Grammy winner Khan unveiled a music video for the tribute on "Piers Morgan Tonight" Monday.

But the studio wasn’t the only place celebrities were letting their voices be heard.

They also took to the street and Twitter like thousands of others around the country, particularly in Florida, Los Angeles and New York.

Actress Tichina Arnold wrote from an L.A. march, "'Black Brown Asian White same struggle same fight!' Is what we r chanting at the rally 4 #Trayvonmartin."

R&B singer Janelle Monae tweeted that she was "moved" to see the outpouring of support in New York. "Seeing pics from the 'Million Hoodies' march in NYC for #TrayvonMartin touched. my. heart,” she said. “When we come together it's priceless."

My K can get really into dnenfdieg something she believes in. She will never set foot in Sea World and rarely visits the zoo. She believes all animals should be free and will let you know. My soon to be Vegan can be very opinionated. I told her stories of when I was her age and had styrofoam banned from Burbank Schools, let her know that if you believe in something you must let others know, make others educated, and not back down if someone doesn't agree. I so heart the young lady she's becoming.I'm so for as well Zimmermann 2012. This man I do believe to be a racist (my opinion) should face the consequences of his actions. There are so many facts to show he DID NOT have to shoot this boy. I read the boy saved his father from a fire, got good grades, played sports, and was robbed of the rest of his life. So sad. I really believe that Florida (my opinion again) is the most racist state I've been to and I avoid flying into there anymore. I've been flying into Georgia because I couldn't stand all the racism I saw when I did spend some time there.I commend these kids taking a stand for something they believe in and it seems they are doing it peacefully which is something some adults need to see.

It's bad when a child dies I feel for his parents. But his mother said it wasn't a race thing. Then Sharpton,Jackson and Obama open their mouths and its a race thing now. Now we have R&B groups making a song for him. I wonder if the shoe was on the other foot if it would be the same. Think about that. Race is a two way steet

This has never been a race thing. It is an injustice thing. Obama sent his condolences to the family. Oh wow, how extremely horrible of him. One more thing, last night it was announced that the lead detective on the case wanted to arrest Zimmerman on a manslaughter charge. The DA said they didn't have enough evidence that a "crime" was committed. Shoddy police work is why everyone is in an uproar.

This is kind of ridiculous since all of the facts are not out yet. I think that it's a little soon to be doing a tribute album about a person that these musicians know entirely nothing about. Not picking sides but what if Zimmerman is proven to be the innocent one here and Trayvon instigated the scuffle that brought about his fate? What then? Are these musicians going to pull back their tribute album then or will they continue to support him because he shared the same race? And what of the mom in all of this Trade Marking her son's name? For what? Is she looking to be paid every time her son's name is mentioned? Will she be selling items with his image on them as well? I don't get it. FWIW, let us all here the whole sum of evidence first before passing judgement on either of the two involved. After all, God will make the final judgement when it is time.

Unfortunately, ours is a country that will never be able to let go of the race card. It is used every single day here. When a black person get fired, they pull the race card (not always but some do). When a black person gets a job, others pull the card to say he/she was hired only because. When a crime takes place, race is always mentioned. When poor housing is mentioned, race is right there as well. It's a problem that this country will never let go of especially in our 'politically correct' society. As for Sharpton and Jackson, both are huge to pull the race card which is why I can't take either seriously. Like I mentioned below, all of the evidence will come out and in the end, it will be He who will pass final judgement on this when it is time.

It doesn't matter that Trayvon was black, or that Zimmerman was white or hispanic or whatever he is. The most important fact is that he SHOT AND KILLED a child and isn't suffering any consequences. If Trayvon attacked him, his big behind could have fought back. There was NO NEED for him to even pull out a gun in the 1st place. Pulling out a gun means you intend to kill therefore he needs to be charged with MURDER. If Trayvon had a gun, I'd probably be on Zimmerman's side. But he didn't. So I'm not.

Had G. Zimmerman, obeyed the police dispatcher order not to follow Trayvon Martin, there would have never been an altercation which led to TRAYON'S DEATH. THEREFORE the plea of self defense should not be accepted or allowed which should eliminate the stand your ground law in this case. TRAYVON DID NOT VIOLATE THE LAW, ZIMMERMAN VIOLATED THE LAW. POLICE OFFICERS ARE TO PROTECT AND SERVE THE PUBLIC. THE SIDEWALK IS FOR PUBLIC USE AND ANY OWNERSHIP OF LAND FOR OCCUPPANCY THE GRASS COMES WITH ALOT OF RESTRICTIONS FROM THE CITY ENFORCED BY THE STATE.

Survival of the fittest will be always. This persecution of z is almost laughable.

I've been reading comments on this page as well as other articles and this is what i gathered: NO ONE COMMENTING ON THIS STORY KNOWS THE FACTS. You got ppl on one side stating "Zimmerman is a killer; he deserves to be imprisoned/hanged". You got ppl on the other side saying "Trayvon was an innocent kid who didn't deserve this". And in between you got Zimmerman's and apparently Trayvon's quote unquote "track record" with the law. You ppl on Zimmerman's camp stating he isn't racist and he is heartbroken about the whole ordeal but it was self defense. You got everyone else in Trayvon's camp saying he didn't attack Zimmerman; he was a good kid and didn't deserve this. And everyone is saying the point is this and the real problem is that and African-Americans use the race card too much. This is what I say and it's simply an opinion: First and foremost I would love it if the world would stop grouping each race together as if we are not all alike. You have blacks, whites, asians, hispanics, latinos, indians, mexicans, etc. who commit crimes against there own as well as other races everyday. Yes it is true that you mostly here about black on black crime but that doesn't mean blacks are the only race that kills. You also have you ignorant blacks, whites, latinos, etc who lack common courtesy and sense. However, you also have your smart, intelligent, well-mannered, respectful blacks, whites, etc. The point is WE ARE ALL THE SAME LIKE IT OR NOT. For crying out loud just read the comments on this case; you got TWO DIVERSE GROUPS OF PPL saying the same thing: GROUP ONE: ARREST ZIMMERMAN MAKE HIM PAY – this is coming from all races and ages. GROUP TWO: Zimmerman was defending himself and should be praised for his bravery – again this is coming from all races BLACKS, WHITES, ETC. Should it matter that Trayvon has a history of criminal activity? I have to say no in this case b/c Zimmerman didn't know that-all he saw was a dude walking in his neighborhood. Should it matter that Zimmerman possibly has criminal history? Again no b/c no one knew that until that info was leaked. All we know is that a guy saw a kid walking in his neighborhood; felt like his neighbors were in danger; POSSIBLY APPROACHED THE KID; and ended up killing him. What we should focus on are the facts; 1st fact: a kid got shot – was it racial we have yet to REALLY determine that. 2nd fact: the man who admits to shooting him has yet to be arrested and at least out on bail. This is where i believe the true outrage is; because in any other state or country – if you shoot a person and admit to it; you are then arrested and a bail is set period. None of which has yet to occur. So the question that I think should and can be answered right now is why hasn't Zimmerman been arrested? There is evidence that he shot and killed him; his gun and his own confession. Now THE REAL REASON of why he did so remains unknown; however, no matter what the reason is; he still committed an act of violence. So, he should have been arrested and held for questioning. The other outrage is the police department's handling on this case; just pathetic if you ask me. Just like any job; law enforcement or not there is a protocol to follow and they have yet to follow it. The bottom line is that we are NEVER going to know what really happened but WE ALL went justice to be served and so we just have to wait, watch and see. As for the tribute song well I have mixed feelings about it: I don't care for the fact that every time someone is killed and for whatever reason it attracts media attention that a song must be written about it. I mean why must these artists wait for something like this to happen; come out of the woods; and do a remake on a song to bring national attention to the cause? I feel like this was partially a publicity stunt to get there names back in the spotlight, but I also feel that some of these artists just want to do something good. I don't agree that this should be a song solely for Trayvon but instead for parents who lost their child/children to violence and how it needs to end. This is simply my opinion.

So many different 'reports', so little actual 'evidence'. We could debate this in the court of public opinion, but what good is that going to do? One report from a 'witness' said Trayvon grabbed for Zimmerman's gun, another said that while Trayvon was on top of Zimmerman and 'pounding' Zimmerman's head on the ground, that Zimmerman was able to draw his weapon (so, that would make it a concealed weapon, right?) – that action is highly unlikely, if you think about it: the man is on his back with the teenager straddling his upper body pounding Zimmerman's head on the ground- yet Zimmerman had the supposed where-with-all to "draw" his gun. No way! Zimmerman's 9mm was already drawn. Zimmerman was the aggressor. The truth will come out-maybe not for 1 year, 10 years, or even 20 years- but it will come out.

What, you don't think he would lie to cover his butt? Here's the whole point, he was told by the police to back off. He did not follow their instructions. I didn't know it was against the law to walk down a public sidewalk. Zimmerman was looking for trouble plain & simple. Had he done what the police told him, the boy would still be alive.

If someone tells at you, that does not give you the right to attack them, breaking their nose, then pound their head into the pavement. I have had people follow and yell at me before and I certainly did not react with violence, as Trayvon reportedly did. His reaction to being followed and yelled at just emphasize the violent nature of black youth.

There has not been one single witness to come forward as of yet that has professed to see how this situation escalated. Not one. For all we know, Zimmerman threw the first punch. We have eye witnesses saying that the boy was kicking his a$$, but nobody has seen how it started, or what Zimmerman might have done to get a kid with absolutely no history of violence to engage in a violent conflict. In fact, of the two, only one of them has any violent actions in their history, Zimmerman.

What we do know, without a shadow of a doubt is that an armed Zimmerman, agaisnt hsi own watch regulations, and against police advice, took his gun and pursued Martin, first by car, and then on foot. We know that as a result of those actions, a confrontation occurred and a boy was killed by Zimmerman.

Is some strange guy was following you in his car, and then got out and started folloing you on foot, and the accosted you, would you feel threatened? Maybe the boy was just "standing HIS ground". We will likely never know who felt more threatened. But we do know which of the two it was that took a gun, and followed by car and then on foot the other guy. We know with absolute certainty who initiated the confrontation. Martin was not following Zimmerman.

The kid did not initiate this confrontation, Zimmerman did. The kid was just walking home from a convenience store eating some skittles. And just like the bank robber who did not intend for anyone to get hurt, Zimmerman is to be held accountable for the results of his actions.

The armed moron got out of his car and pursued an unarmed kid. He had no legal standing to pursue the boy. He was told that he did not need to do that by the police dispatcher.

He got out of his car and initiated an altercation that led to a 17 year old getting shot. Notice, I did not say he should face murder charges. But this clown has to be held accountable for his actions to whatever extent the law applies. If I jump out of my car with gun and initiated a confrontation that leads to a killing, I would expect to be held accountable.

He did not "stand his ground". He pursued the boy, and initiated the confrontation. He was the neighborhood watch captain. His ignored his own watch regulations and the advice of the police dispatcher. He initiated the confrontation.

If he stays in his car and waits for the police like he is supposed to, we are not even having this conversation.

I don't think this kid was an angel by any stretch, but this guy overstepped his authority, and a kid is dead because of it. That much is not in dispute.

I agree with you 100%. These reports about Zimmerman being attacked are all unsubstantiated. I heard his lawyer claim that on tv. Where's all the evidence of his attack? You know they will do whatever it takes to take the blame off their clients. Also, this lawyer was supposed to be on the Lawrence O'Donnell show last night, and he ran away from the interview. So much for believing in your client. Also, a "white women" who called in the 911 call, said she could hear somebody screaming for help. The voice sounded young. She said the screams stopped when she heard the gunshot. Now, if Zimmerman was doing the screaming if he was hurt or in danger, would he stop as soon as he killed that boy? I seriously doubt it. If the man would have done what the police told him to do, nothing would have happened.

Reports are coming out that Trayvon in fact attacked the security patrolman. Reports now indicate Trayvon broke the officers nose and had him down on the ground pounding his head into the pavement before the security watchman drew his weapon to defend his own life. Trayvon was also expelled from school 3 times in the past. Had been previously caught with burglary tools and women's jewelry and a marijuana Baggie. Trayvon is definitely not the innocent gentle youth the African American community is trying to make him out to be.

Zimmerman was not an officer, not a security person, and not a security watchman.

He was an idiot, overzealous, armed average citizen who ignored the police and his own neighborhood watch regulations and pursued an unarmed kid who had done nothing.

If he listens to the police dispatcher, or bothers to follow the neighborhood watch regulations that HE WROTE and stops following the kid there is never a problem. He followed the kid. He accosted the kid. The kid whooped him and he shot the kid. He is guilty of manslaughter at the least.

Yes, I am sure they had to find one to say what they wanted him to say, " a person does not scream for help while attacking someone, they scream HELP when they feel threatened or in pain or fear" , they also have an eye witness to Zimmerman straddleing the boys body after he killed him... What Mr Zimmerman did was pursue, attack or confront, and out of fear or a problem with aggression, fired upon this kid, a bad mistake, a lapse in judgement, a split moment decision with bad consequences... he should of been arrested and held... until they decided if there was evidence to proceed with charges, the police dept did both these men and injustice by not investigating and securing the assailant and the crime scene... Because of their inept respone they have created this reaction... Mr Zimmerman, chose to do what he did that night, he was the aggressor, hehas to step up to the plate for a child being dead. He will have to live that for the rest of his life... The police dept is at fault in not protecting Treyvon rights and Mr Zimmermans. This is what has to change in this world, people in authority not doing their jobs or at least being accountable. We pay them for them to do a professional job and we expect something rather than nothing...Hopefully some good will come out of this but unfortunately two lives were destroyed that evening over a bad judgement call and then it was botched by the people we depend on to protect us.... Very sad situation.... I think we all are going to be surprised what comes out of witnesses by the time this story is done.. Police did not interview alot of the witnesses and now the stories are going to probably change for the truth or lies... Sad sad sad
