iReporters remember Davy Jones, the 'forever heartthrob'

Following Davy Jones' death on February 29, CNN iReport was filled with images and stories from fans of the Monkees' star, remembering how Jones never lost his "heartthrob" image.

While public memorials in the U.K. and/or Stateside are said to still be possibilities, we're hosting a version of our own thanks to our iReporters.

Helen Sandwick, from Rochester, Kent, England, for example, vividly remembers what was written on her pencil case when she was 12 years old: “Helen Jones.”

“My sister and I sat directly in front of the TV each week watching ‘The Monkees’ and ogling Davy,” she said. “Others were fans of John [Lennon] and Paul [McCartney], but I was loyal to Davy.”

That loyalty from fans may be the reason Davy Jones was named the No. 1 teen idol of all time by Yahoo! Music in 2008. A private memorial for Jones, who died on February 29 at the age of 66, took place on Sunday, at his original hometown of Manchester, England, according to the BBC.

Sandwick, like many of the iReporters, got to meet Jones later in life (2009 in her case). Kathie Pishny, another longtime fan, met him in 2006 at the San Diego County Fair.

“I told him how much I loved him since I was 8-years-old, and back then I had his photos on my bedroom walls,” she said. “He was so sweet about it. He smiled, cupped his hands around mine as he handed me the autographed CD, and then he decided to pause a moment and pose for a picture with me! Despite the fair staff rushing people along, he took a few extra seconds to pose for this photo.”

Like Sandwick, Mary Hirsch of Minneapolis fell for Jones watching “The Monkees” at the age of 12.

“I watched every show and bought every album playing them over and over again,” she said. “I would buy magazines that had them on the cover – and oh my poor mom and dad – I would actually make them listen while I read the articles to them - hoping they would come around and see the light and all that was wonderful about The Monkees.”

She named her 2004 one-woman show after something she once wrote in her diary: “If I Don’t Marry Davy Jones, I’ll Just Die.”

It's no wonder that iReporter Lynn Ross, who met Jones in 2009, called him a " gifted artist and a forever heartthrob."

Clicked here because I thought it was Davy Jones, the pirate of the Flying Dutchman. Then I wondered why anyone would call a pirate with a "squid" head a heartthrob. So apparently there's some singer with the same name, of some group I never heard of in my life.

I have never heard of any scandal of him, and I watched the show from the start in the 60's. Always upbeat, always charming. He was a genuinely nice guy. My Dad was his dentist and I actually met him. He was a great person. I wish I could say that about people in music now days.
