Monday night's "Smash" featured plenty of singing between Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty, but guest star Nick Jonas nearly stole the show with his rendition of Michael Buble's "Haven't Met You Yet."
Jonas, who's currently in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying," played Lyle, a young TV star whom Derek discovered (or was it Tom? In any case, it was ironic that Julia declared her disdain for people taking credit for others' careers, and went ahead and did it anyway, on Tom's behalf).
Lyle was also at the right place at the right time for Eileen, when she needed a wealthy investor to buy one of her most prized pieces of art, to help fund the musical.
This led to a last-minute show-stopping performance of "I Never Met a Wolf Who Didn't Love to Howl" for Lyle, involving Ivy, Michael, Tom, Julia, Ellis and finally, Lyle himself. It wasn't my favorite song of the series thus far by any means, but it was a terrific performance.
The good-hearted Lyle negotiated with Eileen so that if the musical succeeded, she might be able to get back her artwork. (Anjelica Huston's portrayal of a woman driven to make the Marilyn musical a hit – even giving away some of her most prized possessions – and to prove her ex-husband wrong, has been one of the highlights so far.)
However, all didn't go entirely smoothly at Derek's big party for Lyle. When Ivy caught Derek flirting with a woman there, he wrote it off as part of a sales pitch for the musical. Still, it looks like a rough road ahead for this couple.
Oh, and Karen had a plotline too. It's hard to remember with her being so disconnected from the goings-on in the musical.
Sure, she was in the ensemble, but not for long. Little by little, Ivy is getting her removed from each number. (Ivy protested that she gave Karen a "half diva" – I'd hate to see a full diva!)
Some members of the ensemble, whom I actually hope to see more of, gave her a lesson in dancing in a group without stealing the spotlight to "Rumor Has It."
At the end of the episode, the quartet performed at a bar, and almost as an obligation, Karen belted out the Adele song - at least in her mind. It was very well sung but at the same time not all that necessary to the story (but more necessary than some of what we've seen on three seasons of "Glee" – yeah, I went there).
After a lackluster third episode, this show had me intrigued to stick with it (though it's still hard to say if NBC will do the same).
