Bethenny Frankel opens up on miscarriage

Cameras have caught reality TV star Bethenny Frankel in joyous moments as well as more difficult times, but now they've captured her revealing a heart-wrenching personal story.

The 41-year-old was speaking on the "Today" show Monday about the third season of her Bravo show, "Bethenny Ever After," which premieres tonight, when she let it slip that she'd recently had a miscarriage.

"We were pregnant with a second baby, and at eight weeks, I miscarried," Frankel revealed. "That was a very emotional experience. It had a lot of different things that came with it."

For example, doubts about her age, whether or not she's a failure as a partner to her husband Jason, and if the same would have happened if he'd wed someone younger.

"Until you become a woman, you don't know the things that come with being a woman," Frankel said. "I'm 41, and, I don't know, it's not really my choice. It's not really my option, and the window's closing, and it's something I'm dealing with."

As far as whether she wants to keep trying, Frankel's unsure.

"I'm not really thinking about it. I don't know what I feel about what my options are," she said. "I do have an incredible daughter, I feel like she's perfect, and truthfully, I have thought about other women more than myself. The first thing that I thought about was, ' I can't believe what people must go through if they can't even have the one.'"

She continued, "Thinking about those women who can't have their own baby, even the first baby, I mean, I'm really lucky. I have the most beautiful daughter in the world. And I'm grateful for her."

I don't watch whatever reality show Ms. Frankel is on and have never seen it. Therefore, I have nothing negative to say about her. I would also NEVER joke about the death of a baby. I am sure this is going to bring on a firestorm of comments about "it" not being a person but I am one of those people who believe that life begins at conception. If she and her husband were truly trying to intentionally have another child, my heart goes out to them. I would feel sympathy for the unintentional loss of a life. As someone who hopes to become "with child" in the next two or three months through in-vitro, the possibility of miscarriage scares the crap out of me and I honestly don't know how I would deal with it if it happens.

I have nothing against Frankel and no opinion about her personal life–because, even though she's a "reality" TV star, I don't know her and I don't know about her personal life. None of us who only watch her on TV do.
I can say that I find these kinds of shows in general to be distasteful and that I find the type of celebrity catagory that Ms. Frankel's finds herself being to be the most false, exploitative and least interesting of any other variety I can think of besides being a porn star. But that's not her fault–she's just trying to make a living. Not sure why anyone should be discussing their miscarriage for the entertainment of others, though. Makes me feel sorry for her on a lot of levels.

If Jennifer Aniston gets pregnant and carries a baby to term it was probably an EGG DONOR. If she has twins it was definitely one. YES – she is too old to get pregnant!!!

I don't really know much about her except that she is on a reality show I don't watch. For the ones on here that commented she is too old to be pregnant...........I wonder if they will cut JenniFer Anniston down if she ever gets pregnant since she said she is trying..and she is now 43! Or maybe because she looks good and thinks she can act, they will all be for her having a baby. (Not that I ever see that happening!)

And if you thought up a product that was very successful at a local level and a major marketing firm and major distiller wanted to buy it from you for millions, you would say no. I don't believe for one second she had a miscarriage. She had a bad test result and then an abortion. These Hollywood over-40 types are all perpetuating THE BIG LIE. Miscarriages are Downs abortions and twins are all egg donor babies. Shame on them for making us believe "miracles" happen to them.

She too freaking old to have anymore kids! The old you get the higher the chance of having kids with Downs Syndrome (see Sarah Palin if you don't believe me). This woman doesn't need anymore kids anyways, no kid wants her anyways. so this turned out nicely. No down syndrome kid for someone else to raise (because she wouldn't), she gets to stay at 90 lbs, she gets money for having a miscarriage because this tool gets to be on the mews. It's a win win!

This woman is a shrew, and I find it hard to believe that she didn't welcome that miscarriage. Maybe she should get treatment for that eating disorder before she tries to bring another kid into the world. I'm sick of Bethenny. She treats everyone like garbage, including her poor husband. And everyone who's familiar with this self-serving hag know that she only had her first kid to snag the man. She whines and carries on about how awful her own (very privileged) childhood was - and then she puts money and fame ahead of her daughter's needs. I wish this skeleton would just go away.

Inumerable women in the world miscarry a child every day. In my practice, the woman and/or significant other are heartbroken and even embarassed to share their experience with family members and friends. Splashing Bethany's face and her "family tragedy" across news web pages not only lacks plausibility but is a weak attempt to promote a reality show – did the production company really believe this could lead to more viewers? Bad choice

How does one "let it slip that she'd recently had a miscarriage."? Bethany Frankel is out to sell herself and that's all it is. When she was on the housewives she was the bad girl and then when they opted to give her her own show soon enough she was the good girl always being attacked.

I am extremely sorry that she did miscarry her child. I think it's one of the saddest events for any woman. But I also don't think it's right to go around 'promoting' the case just to garner sympathy RIGHT BEFORE the premiere of your show. Seriously, why now? WHy not right after it happened? Why not a month later? No, let's do it the day before my premiere episode airs so people will feel sorry for me and my ratings will go up because of sympathy viewing.

I'm tired of REALITY dorks getting press from the housewives to the shore crew. They don't have talent other than to pee behind a potted plant or to fabricate a stalled boat out in the middle of the ocean. From Taylor on Beverly Hills wives writing her "life story with Russell" seconds after his death to Bethany Frankel constantly making it seem she's SUPER for doing what she does. It's dumb.

I've never actually watched more than a few minutes of any of these shows at a time...and in those cases I was sort of forced into it by friends. But one thing is certain: Most of these women are just TOO OLD to have children with any relative safety.

I realize that's a hard pill to swallow for some, but there really is a biological tipping point, and for the vast majority of women, that is around 37 or before. Sure, people HAVE had kids later than that, and do so frequently. But usually not without a HUGE medical expense, and a grave risk to both the mother and the developing fetus. Additionally, birth defects (Downs Syndrome, general mental retardation...the list goes on..) are much higher in women of this age group. Plastic surgery can hold off some of the visual aspects of getting older, but the internal mechanics can't be changed. Ms. Frankel is just running into a hard fact of biology.

Regardless of your opinion of her celebrity, she's mentioned a topic that few in the media truly discuss with such candor.
What is it like becoming a parent at a later age than most women? How does it feel to not be able to have more children? What is it like to feel as if you are holding back the gift of children to your spouse?
Many women in their late thirties and after confront these realities. I was able to have children, but only after much struggle and delay. I may not watch this woman's show, but I appreciate her discussion of a topic that is rarely discussed, but extremely intense for those of us who have experienced it.
I did not view this as anything but a candid discussion of a difficult, but important topic.
You may not find it relatable, but many of us do.

I feel bad for her but at the same time Its hard to feel empathy for someone who has been given everything in life yet still feels it is necessary for everyone in the world to know how "abhorrent" her life is

whats happened to humanity? whats happened to showing even the smallest amount of compasion for someone? why do so many people feel it necessary to comment on something just to to say something? some of these remarks are without fore thought of others feelings. I guess unless it has happened to you it really doesn't matter? with so much instability in the world lets just add a little more negative to the mix. I say enough is enough. If you don't like what you read, then don't comment. nobody wants to here the negative and stupid things you say. what ever happened to being human?

The comments section is called "Sound Off". Why is it that when someone's opinion is different from yours, that makes them negative? I disagree with a lot of the things being said. Does that make me right?

How in the bloody h*ll did this woman get an entire show about her?? Usually I'm sickened by reality TV... But in this case, I'm too baffled to be disgusted. Who, aside from maybe her family, gives a rat's a** about this lady? What would be the point of putting my hard earned free time, and essentially, my life, aside to watch what this lady does?? Just when you think it can't go any lower, reality TV gives us something even more pointless to banter on about... and for those of you that are paid to post supportive messages to this spoiled brat: I do have more important thing to do, and I'm now going to go do them. See you all in five minutes when this show is cut and the next POS is shoveled into our mouths by CNN.

Her show is great, and a lot of people get a lot out of it. So, why don't you STFU and stop posting about something you obviously know nothing about, but apparently care too much about. Id iot.

I love her show. It's real and honest and from the heart. She is a nice person who worked her way up the business ladder. If you don't watch her show, go somewhere else and comment on something you watch. There are many women who look up to Bethenny. Sorry for your loss B and family.

So sorry for your loss. She is sharing her pain because she is human just like us. My sister has one child and has been trying for another but has had miscarriages. It's a painful loss. She still feels very blessed to have her son but sometimes it's not easy. I always wanted a child and waited to long. I wish women could start families while they are still young enough to have children. Every child is a blessing !! God bless you and your family during this difficult time and thank you for sharing your feelings so sad it's not easy when some people have no compassion. Please treat everyone with alittle compassion. What a beautiful world this would be !!!

Wow! So many negative people with hurtful and hateful comments. Didn't your parents ever teach you that if don't have something good/nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all? Apparently not. Next time you think you have something worthwhile to add with such hateful comments, please show some restraint &self-control and don't comment at all. Such lack of self-control shows a complete absence of caring and empathy toward your fellow men and women and only serves to make people know you've sloughed way too much of your gray matter (brain cells) away.

Yes, there are some nasty, vile people on these boards. They are so unsatisfied with their own lives that they come on these boards to spew their venom. You have to pity them, really.

Besides, most of the people posting hateful comments are GOPers who are just pizzed because they are losers who are going to lose their azzes in November ... and, that's going to be HILARIOUS!! The whole South is going to fall into a deep depression. Fox News will say it was voter fraud that won the re-election for President Obama, and the lemmings will lap it up like a kitten lapping up a plate of milk. The rednecks can't even figure out how voting Republican is bad for them and their trailer park. Anyway, that's why they come post on here. It's an outlet for those poor souls.

What hurtful words some of you are using. No matter what or how you feel about her, please show some compassion to her and her family. Bethany is a self made woman who is business savvy, has a husband who appears to love her greatly and a beautiful child. As a mother of 3, I can't imagine the pain that comes with a miscarriage, but I send prayers out for anyone that has suffered this and to Bethany as well.

I don't know much about this woman but I respect her thought process. It's amazing to me how many women who have had difficulty having one child go out and try and try to have another child naturally and then go out and pay big bucks to have another via other means. Maybe everyone isn't meant to have 2.5 children. Maybe your life will not end if you were meant to have 1 child. She's 41 and has a child. Be happy with that and move on.

I didn't know who she was until watching her show last night. She is what she is...she is a narcasist but she is funny and since I like women who are strong, funny, independant and are in great shape, I like her and think she is hot. Maybe, just maybe, she is doing this for the right reasons and wants to show that she isn't the ice queen she appears to be and something like this is very painful and this experience has made her a more comapssionate and better person and wants to relate to other women who have gone through the same thing. I don't know who would want 15 minutes of fame, if they had to deal with all the truely hateful people out there, as evidenced by this blog. Damn peolpe, she lost a child.

Bethenny and Jason, I am so sorry for your loss. I had a miscarriage and I know how devastating it is. I didn't have a child at the time, but did have a wonderful son a few years later. But either way, it is still an emotional and difficult time.

Please ignore these people who have nothing nice or positive to say. They must be horrible people. I know many who enjoy your show and and get a lot of laughs at your funny perspective on life (but not this particular experience). We love you and wish you and your family well – and hope you are healing from your ordeal. Take comfort in your daughter and Jason at this time.

When you click on a story, you are voting for that story. When you comment on a story, that's like voting for it 10 more times. What CNN reports on is based on your behavior.
