New Jersey Gov. faces critics for Houston honor

Update 9:21 p.m.: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced earlier this week that he plans to have the state's flags fly at half-staff in honor of Jersey native Whitney Houston, and on Thursday issued an executive order for the tribute to take place Friday.

Since then, Christie has been standing ground against critics who disagree with his choice to use a tribute typically reserved to honor fallen soldiers or first responders.

@kevincouver...you're dumber then a box of rocks, I hope you lose all of your fingers so we never have to see your stupidity spread on the internet anymore.

This is a poor move by Christie. People already think NJ is the worst state in the US, not because of it's "shore" people but rather it's corruption. Embezzling schools' money and then spreading it throughout the criminal groups is pretty low. NJ is known for its corruption and by supporting someone like Houston you're only making it worse. She was a talented singer but squandered her gift. She did nothing for charities (that wasn't a PR move) and was the ultimate crackhead. There is no reason at all to honor this woman or the decision made by this state's goverment.

TO ALL THAT POST THE BAD COMMENTS ABOUT THE TROOPS. YOU ARE A DISGRACE TO AMERICA. THEY DID NOT DO ANYTHING CLOSE TO WHAT THE TERRORISTS HAVE DONE. WHAT ABOUT THEM DRAGGING AND BURNING THE BODIES OF THE NON COMBATANT CONTRACTORS DECAPITATING THE AMERICAN REPORTER.

OUR TROOPS GO THROUGH THINGS YOU CAN'T IMAGINE. BUT IMAGINE THIS THIS WILL EVENTUALLY HAPPEN HERE AGAIN. WHEN IT IS YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY YOU WILL FEEL DIFFERENT. YOU WILL WANT REVENGE IN THE WORST WAY. STAND BEHIND OUR TROOPS OR STAND INFRONT OF THEM BECAUSE YOU ARE THE ENEMY.

WHEN IT HAPPENS HERE YOU ARE NOTHING BUT A TARGET TO ME, LIBERAL SOCIALISTS ARE THE WORST OF THE WORST WILLING TO THROW OUR COUNTRY AWAY FOR THE SAKE OF HUGS AND HOPE. APPEASE THE ENEMY, NEGOTIATE WITH THEM SHOWS WEAKNESS AND NOTHING MORE. CRUSH THE ENEMY IS HOW IT IS DONE.

SUPPORTING THE ENEMY IN ANY WAY MAKE YOU AS BAD AS THEM.

I applaud the governor for his decision, I wasn't a fan of the new jersey governor, in fact I think I've had some harsh things to say about him. What comes to mind is a old saying, you can't judge the book by the cover! I just grew a lot of respect for Gov Christie and I'm going to take a closer look at this guy! And for all you haters out there! Get over it! U betcha it's one in every family! And you can take that to the Bank!

she is not an american icon. she is a musician. your executive dission is way off base. why don't you half-staf on sunday every month for the fallen nj vets and those who lost their lives fighting for our country. that would be an honored and resptfulthing to hone. honor those who deserve it. although talented we don't need to honor another srtung out musician who threw her life away. wake up. bad idea.

My flag will be a full staff. I fly it every day and only the President can tell me to lower it. I didn't get shot so my flag could be used as this fool governor says he can. Learn how to respect the flag Christie and no vote for you from me or my family.

This is reserved for the military. Does Christie and the others feel guilty that she died. Excuse me she was a celebrity and that was it. The way our military is being treated by the American people in some cases is a disgrace. Yes some soldiers relieved themselves on the dead but look what these same people did to our soldiers. They beheaded them, burned them alive or after death, dragged the corpses behind vehicles. But that does not matter. You people should realize that many of these soldiers go where our Commander and Chief decides. The way they are treated, what does one expect of them, they are human. NO HALF MAST for Houston. They did no such thing for Michael Jackson. Is Christie doing this to appease Molotto Obama.

she's a great person who did alot for others?. what is this all about. i never heard of her giving a dime to one charity. the only 'good' she did was making her junkies rich. she is talented, but no more than that. you people are heralding as a saint. let her rest in peace and stop the unecessary adoration.

This Governor is EXACTLY right. Flying the flag half mass should be reserved for a Military honor only.
Whitney Houston was a great singer.....that's it.
Even though her death is terrible and tragic, there is NOTHING special about her. There are a whole LOT of great singers out there; just not that many heroes.

that is NOT what christie said. he supports flying the flag at hs for whitney. he said nothing about reserving this for our veterens, etc. instead he should fly the flags at hs once a month for the vets and fallen soldiers of his state. thiswould be right and fitting.

I have no problem honoring Whitney for the super star that she is. As far as fallen Soldiers go, if they weren't there killing innocent people in the first place they would be less likely to be fallen. Sorry – just my take on it.

Actually stupid, the Jersey Shore people are almost all from NY. The show is just filmed in New Jersey. Hence "Jersey Shore".

You're equating the unscripted reality show Jersey Shore to the fictional scripted series LA LAW? Classic apples & oranges. Love it when people speak (or write) before thinking. Ugh.

ok you didnt make a great analogy between jersey shore and la law..but i get your point..i am from the jersey shore, born and raised, and all the people on the show, except for the two, are from NY or Rhode Island. so before you start throwing out nj sucks because of jersey shore comments, remember that our beaches get invaded by new yorkers every summer.

I support our vets. They are true heroes. Many of us consider our pets to be our best friends. They are loyal friends and companions that never get angry or fuss at us. They are always there happy to see us when we get home from work. It is the American Vets that take care of and help our pets when they are sick. We all need to be grateful to vets for their role in spaying-neutering strays and helping control the animal population. Remember-Vets are the doctors of the animal kingdom. True American Heroes.

With the way some of our soldiers have been behaving over the past couple wars – why not! Sure she did drugs, but she did not pee on the dead or strip them naked while in detention. It's all relative.

To be honest i have never thought of fight for the freedom of the american people...i fought to stay alive and make sure my fellow "Battle Buddies" and i make it back home safe and sound. i did two tours almost three year of my life over there. I care less what you think or say about The US Military. You keep on watching the news and go on with what they say. To watch it on TV and to live it every day for 3 years is a big difference. To fly the Flag at half staff is an insult to us vet that shed body and blood...

Since the terrorists treat captives so well why don't you go get some of the good treatment. It will be like a 5 star hotel.
What the troops did was nothing compared to what the terrorists do. Would you like a copy of the beheading of the American reporter, I have it so I never forget, how about 3,000 dead people the list goes on and on. yet you condemn the troops. Just move to another Islamic country and see how you are treated just because of your religion.

You are the type of person to run and hide behind our troops when you need it but you really stand in support of the enemy.
