What's the verdict: Madonna's Super Bowl show

Yes, there was a game on last night, but let's focus on the main halftime event: Madonna.

The 53-year-old trumpeted her nervousness right up to Sunday's anticipated performance, but she didn't make a timid entrance. Cloaked in a gold robe and wearing regal headgear, Madge swept onto the field atop a throne as gladiators led the way.

Madonna had promised a performance without scandal, and for the most part that's what she gave (one of the singer's many guest performers, M.I.A., apparently didn't get the memo).

Running through hits like "Vogue," "Music" and "Like A Prayer" in addition to her new single "Give Me All Your Luvin'" and a little shufflin' with LMFAO, Madge certainly proved her pop star status atop some very tall heels...even if she didn't exactly wow the critics.

"Madonna wasn’t the indefatigable trouper of years past. Though she’s still lithe, she measured her moves, letting her supporting cast offer distractions," said the New York Times in a review. "The bad girl is a grown up now, like it or not."

Indeed, notes the Chicago Tribune, 20 years ago you would've expected it to be Madonna who would have networks issuing apologies over a rude hand gesture, but this time, she left the antics to her guests.

"Madonna has never really been about 'live' performance; her concerts are essentially theatrical exhibitions accompanied by piped in music," the Tribune says, adding that that was the case for the Super Bowl show. The new single "Give Me All Your Luvin'" "just [wasn't] arresting in the way prime Madonna could be," the review continues. "It was the Material Girl who couldn’t deliver the goods."

The Los Angeles Times argues that she did deliver, but on the advertising front for the release of her new album "M.D.N.A." in March.

"Despite its success and extravagance, this whole halftime package most of all was little more than an ingeniously well planned — and shockingly transparent — advertisement for 'M.D.N.A.,' and not much more," the review says. "Talk about marketing to a lot of eyeballs."

While Madonna did appear to take a stumble during her "Music" set, overall Time notes that she still kept up with "a bevy of dancers."

The song choices weren't surprising, Time says, "but it all could have been much worse. Have we forgotten the Black Eyed Peas already?"

Its always funny how people use comment boards to be negative..
Madonna has been around for 30 + Yrs. The fact that she has sold about 300 million albums worldwide, has more top 10's in the US than even the Beatles or Elvis and has more Dance Chart 1's than any other artist seems to always go unheard. Is she the best singer or performer ever, of course not. However, she has been able to stay relevant and entertaing for a very long time. Yes, shes 53 and hopefully will change the way she markets herself going forward. But her success, brand and talent can't be ignored. Its called wikpedia people.. You don't acomplish the things she has with out talent. And why are we comparing her to Adele.. Really, thats apples and oranges folks. I love em' both.. Go Madonna Go Adele...

Since all the world is watching, surely we can put out some better half time stuff than Kid Rock gyrating, boobs falling loose, spitting after the National Anthem, unclassy hand gestures. This stuff makes us look dumb in front of the whole world. I realize we have dumbed down, but do we have to display it worldwide?

I could almost GUARANTEE you that all the negative remarks (or is it jealousy oops!) is coming from people who have never been to a live Madonna show and/or have absolutely zero panache.I was fortunate enough to attend her last two tours and was close enough to attest she DID sing live and lets not forget, high octane dancing, guitar playing without intermisions or breaks for 2 1/2 F-ING HOURS. Can ANY of you haters come anywhere close? MADONNA IS FRIGGING A FORCE OF NATURE! PEACE.

The big deal about Madonna is that she was performing to celebrate her one true love - herself. The solipsism of that new single was astounding. She's always been more product than artist - indeed she can't really sing well - but this takes the cake.

Band members from my children's high school were among the bands that played the drums at the beginning of the "Like a prayer" song. They practiced with her for 2 weeks and some of them told my daughter how mean Madonna was and what a perfectionist she was. I guess I am not surprised.

Madonna did not disappoint. I thought her half-time performance showed her best from the past as well as the talent she continues to wield. I applaud her creativity and production talent. It's understandable why many of the young artists today emulate her performance style. Could explain why her half-time performance set the record for most watched of all time! Can't wait to see what they come up with next year – it's what makes watching the Super Bowl even better! p.s. Love those commercials, too!

Her show was terrible and had nothing to do with her age. Many of you need to take a look around. If she did this when she was 20 or 30 it would have been terrible too! What you saw as mindless entertainment was full of ritualistic symbolism,. She is or her handlers are pushing a clear Illuminati message here. Check up and learn . There is nothing original about her this kind of stuff has been going on since ancient times .. Check out a site like The Vigilant Citizen and learn about what the music industry is really up to. You will walk away convinced...trust me!

No Nightthawk, you take you @$$ to visit other countries and get beyond your trailer and get your facts straight. The middle finger does NOT mean the same fool just like the thumb gesture in AMerica as the Fonz on Happy Days do mean to be cool; but in other parts of the world, the thumb gesture can be offensive. Travel and learn. Maybe you are listening to the office window next to you.

Horrible, Horrible, Horrible. Did a 11 year old write this song or did the writer just lose their mind? Rather ODD for a woman who is middle aged to be singing like a little child. Clearly they had to auto tuned her voice and have every effect known to God on her vocals with also being EQ’d to the max to make her sound like some child. Seriously the worse sound and song I have ever heard in my whole life, seriously time for her to get out of the music business. This “Give me all your Luvin” is Horrible.

I thought the show was ok. Much better than the Black Eyed Peas. I wish she would have just performed some of her most popular songs and skipped all the hoopla and other singers with her on stage. What happened to the 10-second delay the networks were supposed to have in place to prevent obscenities from making it onto the air? Someone dropped the ball on that.

I thought it was a football game? I'll never understand why they even have a halftime show. Are they players that out of shape that the need a break mid game? I really, really hope not. If they must do something why not let the cheerleaders take center stage? Those girls can dance, do gymnastics and cheer all at the same time. Save the $$ on the crappy "big' acts and let the cheer squad shine for a few minutes. Then get back to the reason we're all watching, THE GAME.

When P.O.P (Power of Paradise) by Dave Skye was put together, I never knew who the character in one of the stories 'Open Mic" could be, because of the "never-heard-of-before" phenomenon she pulled off from stage. Later this year on closer examination I knew that despite all the crazy things they say about MADONNA, she was the one that could pull off this unheard fit from the stage. If you read this story and you think of someone else who can pull this off, share it with the world! The book would be in Amazon in a week. Its already on powerofparadise.com.

It's funny how Michael and Janet Jackson can use pre-recorded vocals at the Super Bowl and it's ok, but when it's Madonna it's wrong LOLOL
When you have 8 minutes to setup your stage, no time to do a sound check, have such an elaborate setting and most importantly perform in front of over 100 million people, they probably suggest you to use pre-recorded vocals. Not worth taking the risk, a misstep (remember BEP??) can be disastrous.

Madonna turned it out like a Las Vegas show - she knew which songs were going to resonate with the audience, and she is the only act who has ever been able to bring a sufficiently-sized performance to play to a football stadium in the bowl's history. Who else has managed to put together a show of that magnitude? That anyone is saying she didn't deliver is boggling. Even more ridiculous is anyone saying that the flip of a finger during a football game "marred" the entire performance. Are you kidding? It was barely noticeable, and furthermore, we see guys grab their crotches and yell obscenities during every football game on TV and yet we are obsessed with a rapper flipping the bird? THIS is shocking why?? How is anyone watching a football game that sensitive? They should sit in the bleachers/stands in New York if they are really that petal soft. Bravo Madonna. How soon they forget the shows of years passed now that you have set the bar.

She's been around a long time and has continued to be the idle for many upcoming musicians today. It's not her fault what M.I.A. did, so get over that. Look at her – 53 years old and still going strong! I'm right up there with her and believe me it's not easy to keep up with her show as well as she did. Grow up people! What she's contributed to the music industry over these years has been very valuable, there is no doubt about that. However, to say that this performance was great is a HUGE overstatement. Comparing it to last year, of course this one was better (even with the finger) but there hasn't been a very solid performance for a while. They have all been OKAY at best. Yes, she's 53 years old, but she still touts herself as being among the industry players as she was years ago. I'm shocked that people think she put on a great show. The theatrics surrounding her may have been entertaining, but if we're talking about Madonna's performance, it was unimaginative, lacking energy, and not at all Super Bowl-worthy, in my opinion.

She does a great Job singing and dancing while her show goes on
That is not easy to do.
She does a combo of live and lypsync, but mostly live.
Unless you can do it at that level. Keep quiet.

I've thought most of the show choices over the last 10 years were pretty good...the kinds of shows you'd expect at such a large venue. Many of them have been what I'd call "Arena Rock" shows like Rolling Stones, Prince, U2...shows where the music is the main feature, and they all sang live. A couple of them have been more glitzy and poppy, like Black Eyed peas and Janet Jackson. I think what they learned with BEP last year is that if they go with a glitzy pop production with a lot of dancing, lip synching is a must. Bottom line, if you don't like Madonna, you probably didn't like this year's show. But I'm guessing there are a lot of converts who saw it in person and became fans. She puts on a great live show.

Overall, Madonna did better than I expected. She did have a couple of fumbles, where she couldn't get up on the bleachers, it took her a couple of tries (did anybody catch that?), and there was one point where she looked awkward, clumsy. Maybe she forgot her routine for a second, but she recovered. Frankly, it's no easy task pulling something like this off, no matter WHO you are. Jitters will get to you. How Adele got in this conversation is beyond me. I'm not a big fan of Madonna's, but I give credit where credit is due. Madonna, for the MOST part, pulled it off very well.

The Black Eyed Peas really dragged things down even more than their own performance when they brought "others" into the act. (THAT was the worst halftime show ever that comes to mind. Way worse than Janet Jackson's.) Aerosmith, Prince (or formerly known as), Springsteen, Paul McCartney, and many others all did so much better by just them getting up therre and doing the show themselves. That's what I wanted to see... Just Madonna and her band.

You can tell there were parts that were lipsynced, mostly just the entrance to Vogue and some of the dub parts in Music, the rest was her live voice, you can tell if you actually were listening. She did amazing, a spectacle that butterface Gaga could never match. She also did all this with less than 10 minutes to set up a stage. The only thing that makes her a "has been" is that her top of the chart albums sell on popularity alone, she doesn't have to pay Clear Channel to play her songs. She can still sell out every single arena in the US and most countries across the globe as proven in 2009 when she broke all records and became the highest grossing tour in history for any artist. People can diss her all they want, but they're only proving their ignorance.

Madonna rules. Plain and simple. She is the Queen of Pop and still the envy of today's pop stars like Britney Spears and Lady Gaga. She writes alot of her own music, and has been entertaining the world for almost 30 years. My big complaint about her is her music is not as good as it used to be and she thinks teaming up with artists like MIA and Nicky Minaj is 'cool' and will put her back on the map. She never left the map if you ask me. She needs to return to her roots by working with Patrick Leonard again and making good, fun music again. She needs to quit thinking she is 23 and act more mature.

Now let's hear M.I.A say she was 'making a statement' and of course, she used the Superbowl half-time show to do it. I honestly didn't notice it last night (but I did notice Madonna's near-stumble). No apology is necessary from M.I.A. and I hope the liberal idiots that are asking for one will know, it is insincere and unworthy if one has to ask for an apology-and she meant to do it so what can she apologize for? First, I am not a Madonna fan. I did not like her choice of songs and would have been more enthusiastic if she had picked something more up tempo, like "Ray of Light". I have to admit, I liked that song. I did appreciate the fact that she kept her attire conservative. The lip-syncing was sad but her dancing was commendable. I do feel her effort was sabotaged by MIA and the show would have much better if MIA actually had been MIA (missing in action).

So, if the NFL is gonna keep picking "old farts" (and you have already had my personal favorite there already), have you asked Bob Seger? That man can put on one heck of a show!

She killed it. The Super Bowl Halftime is not an actual concert that allows for dozens of sounds, prestine sound check and costume change after costume change. She picked a few greates (Like a Prayer, Vogue, Music) and her so-so new song and performed her a$s off. If wish the shows were lower and she didn't have a pulled hamstring to show she can still dance like crazy but at 53 she can still out-dance Britney and GaGa. And to the people angry she lip synced, you do realize nearly everyone does (per NFL recommendation) or they risk sounding like the Black Eyed Peas horrible show in 2011. Like a Prayer was certainly live and she wowed. Madge had 12 minutes to steal the show and steal she did...prob why she actually got HIGHER ratings than the game itself...no joke look it up! Contrary to what agesits, GaGa fans and misognostic red-state males think or feel about her Madonna is an ICON and forever the Queen of Pop..and no I'm not 50 I'm 26 myself.

  223. What a Show!

What an amazing performance by everyone involved. Madonna, you were brilliant and the other singers you had in the concert...yes, I said concert. Was great. It was arguably one of the most fantastic productions and performances ANYONE has seen in the entire Super Bowl history. For a moment (12 min to be more specific) you completely forgot that the setting was in the middle of a Stadium and you were part of a concert. The sound, music and stage show was absolutely amazing. Aside from the Idiot he wanted to do her stupid gesture, everyone was a phenomenal concert...Ahem...I mean half time show. Oh and BTW for those of you who are lady gaga fans, Madonna was Lady GAGA inspiration to include Lady GAGA remaking some of Madonna's songs. The lesson learned here? Do your homework before opening your mouth.

Thanks Alexandra – I was wondering who did the great graphics on the field. We did not get to see enough of those, and the little bit we did see on TV – they were awesome. I really wish that Madonna had had the sense to just sit in a chair and let the real dancers and graphics tell the story – THAT would been amazing!!! You don't have to try to dance/fall/slip around the place in bad shoes to be a star – but you do have to have some respect for yourself and your audience, and Madonna's desperation in trying to "dance" yesterday completely destroyed it. Sad, sad, sad.

Madonna had a few good songs back in the day but keep in mind she is a pop artist and nothing more. She's no Carole King or Carly Simon. She's no Marvin Gaye with socially relevant lyrics ("What's Goin On"). She's the original lip synching imitator of R and B who set the path for future wannabes like Britney Spears. I don't hate her and respect the fact that she's successful...it just is what it is.

one of the worst halftime shows in recent memory. Just because there was dancing, lights and techno gadgetry doesn't make what was a badly lip synced performance by an over the hill, so called legend who is desperate to get the attention away from people like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Adele, etc. People who have far more musical talen tthan Madonna ever had.
I cannot figure out why the Super Bowl, the most watched event in the world each year continues to use these over the hill, hasbeen halftime shows...Madonna, Black Eyed Peas, Aerosmith, ACDC, etc....for the dime you are dropping get an act that someone under the age of 40 has heard of. And for gods sake if they cant sing it live, they dont get to do the show.

    • Another Steve

Very ignorant comments, are you serious? They use people like Madonna because Madonna is not a flash in the pan. Madonna made the Rock N Roll HOF. And it is funny how you say people under the age of 40 do not know the Black Eyed Peas. The Black Eyed Peas are still very relevant in the top 40. They were picked because they appeal to the younger crowd and for some reason...mocked because the Older crowd did not get them last year. I've enjoyed all the halftime shows of late. Did not know ACDC played the Sper Bowl. Which one? Steve, who would you have liked to see? Give me an idea...we all need a laugh.

    • AllyCat

Really? Are there that many 20 year olds watching the superbowl with sponsorship money? They use older acts because the sponsors are familiar with them and the money for these big events comes from the sponsors. Duh! All the younger acts do is rip-off the older artists anyway. None of them are original. They just sample someone elses music and yap over it.

      February 6, 2012 at 12:39 pm | Report abuse |
    • steve jackson

Well yes...they use geezer acts to appeal to the older sponsorship dollars...yet the sponsors are all looking to appeal to the 18-34 demographic. So it is counterintuitive to use acts in which the demographic all advertisers are clamoring for (18-34) either weren't born yet or too young to remember.

I have no issue with Madonna....but she is old, irrelevant and is far more capable than lip synching...Either let them sing live or go with younger acts that appeal to the 18-34 demographic.

Obviously they are failing because almost every year the result is a hated of the halftime show.

    • Lady Gaga sucks

Mentioning Lady Gaga as an example of someone with musical talent says a lot about your ability to recognize and label musical talent.

I guess you've never heard anyone comment that Lady Gaga's playbook for fame is basically to copy Madonna and Marilyn Manson visually. She's publicly stated that she copies Madonna. And maybe you missed that damn near everyone has charged that Lady Gaga's biggest hit and gay anthem “Born This Way" was a musical rip-off of Madonna's hit from 20 years ago “Express Yourself”.

This is probably one of the better Half time shows ive seen in the last 10 years, the stage was kind of cool. I could of done with out Nikki Whatever her face, the one that has no talent but is famous for some stupid reason. The chick that flipped people off, who gives a crap, people give other people the finger all the time but it doesn't change the fact that i have no idea who the hell she is. A few facts for perspective here. Madonna's sales are an estimated $300,000,000. That puts her in the same category as groups like The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Led Zepplin, Elton John, and Queen. Lady Gaga, while she's wildly talented, has only sold about $64,000,000. That puts her in the same category with NKOTB, Boys II Men, Village People, UB40, Meatloaf and Kenny G.

The numbers don't lie. Big difference between the two.

What everyone seems to be missing in the Gaga comparison, is that GaGa is all heart. Madonna is one cold fish. There is absolutely NO warmth from her. She's a narcissist and probably would have kept getting away with it except that GaGa is so warm, and sweet, and humble, and is able to MAKE FUN OF HERSELF, which is KEY. Of COURSE GaGa is compared to her musically, she's said 500 times that Madonna was a major influence on her. ALL musicians draw from SOMEBODY....THATS HOW IT WORKS. Plus GaGa's rule is NO LIPPING. Madonna lipped that whole performance...even Elton John called her out on it. Not to mention madonna writes very little of her own material, and what was with Celo Green in his ridiculous black cape, not to mention those freaks with the bad hair? The special effects were very cool....unfortunately, Madonna wasn't one of them.

    • common sense

Madonna like the bulk of the other bands you named has been around for 30 years & thus sold more then other acts like even gaga who i'm no fan of but again when you are around for 30 years you have not only built of a fairly big fan base who chances are going to support you regardless and retouinely buy your crap. Thus you can tragically figure that madonna could sing in alien and still sell at least 1 million downloads or cds. Its also why she looks down on the likes of gaga as do other acts who have been around for 30 years. When you've been around for while like anywhere else you tend to rule out new comers. I guarantee madonna knew and brought in MIA for that sole purpose to cause a stir and yet free madonna from blame like what happened with janet or even her MTV britney kiss. MIA no one's heard of & did it for attention because now everyone knows her even bad press is still press and drawns interest. And madonna's whole career especially the last 20 years has been stalled & needs periodic issues like the kiss, like the attacks on gaga, like this and many others. And all the while people are still talking about madonna even when talking about MIA now so again it was PR attention.

Sue nailed it. Madonna wasn't signing except for a tiny part. When the microphone is about 4 inches away from her mouth and then she starts "running" and it gets about a foot and 1/2 away and there is no change in the signing – volume, tempo, etc... She isn't singing. That's what she charges $300 for at her concerts. And she thinks she's worth it.

She is a so-so dancer......can't think of any memorable songs. She was the first mega star to "self promote" with minimal talent. As a resident of L'Aquila, Italy (where Madonna's father Silvio is from) I would say she did a very tasteful performance. We are battling with almost 10 feet of snow this week, so it really warmed us up watching the show.

Oh for God's sake "Howwie" – "I never saw a close-up of her face. Becasue she didn't look as good." We are allowed to age – it's not a character flaw or a moral failing. We all age - including YOU.

You guys in the media are just plain idiots. Instead of focusing on what a great half-time show Madonna put on, you have choosen to focus on a split-second gesture that to tell the truth I did not notice being a male as my attention was not on anyone hands. Secondly you choose to make a racist issue out of it. Get over it guy I can gaurantee that your
S_ _ _ stink just like everyone else!

I thought for 50 plus she did a pretty good job overall....the LMAO was cool but the girls were excess baggage and maybe that is because I am an old chick and their gig doesn't appeal to me.....CeLo was cool and he and Madge did a good job. Overall it was better than some and not as bad as a few...think Timberlake and J Jackson debacle which stunk with or without the wardrobe malfunction....

How can anyone call a person talented if they lyp-synced their songs. Lets face it we live in a time where most new musicians are hired for their looks and not their voices. The studio can make anyone sounds good now. It's all about the looks and not the talent. Madonna was one of the earliest of the talentless performers and she proved it at the superbowl.

Guys don't care what girls sing or how they move. All guys care is the facade! Madonna lost her facade about 20-30 years ago. It's like watching not your mother but your grandma is trying some old tricks. It's a good opportunity for her to say " my last show was the super bowl"

David Letterman should have known better not to bust Madonna about her age & compared her to Zaza Gabor at 95 commencing her Superbowl 1/2 time gig- David the next time you have Madonna on your show she's going to do you "Li ve" on TV & if Elii is there she's going to do both of you! Do you care if she gets bleeped-

The Jackson/Timberlake incident was not a "wardrobe malfunction". It was obviously a deliberate stunt.

Except that the stupid black wench forgot to make sure that when the preplanned garment pull happened that the whole world would not see her boob.

If I pantsed and you, and you forgot to put on underwear for the preplanned pantsing, who fault is it if the world sees your smelly hooch.

The problem with most Americans is every one is black or white. Fact MIA is asian her parents are from Sri Lanka, a island south of India. The majority of the worlds population is Asian since you live in the US were they are only 1 percent of the total group you do not know one we you see one. But any way it should not matter what race she is.
