Steve Jones, Nicole Scherzinger exit 'X Factor'

The contestants on "X Factor's" second season won't be the only new faces, as Simon Cowell's reality competition has cleaned house.

Fox has confirmed to CNN that neither "X Factor" host Steve Jones nor mentor/judge Nicole Scherzinger will return for the show's second season. Jones also confirmed the news via his Twitter account, simply saying that it was a "shame" but that he did have a great time.

To top it off, there are also rumors that Paula Abdul's gotten the boot, with Deadline citing "a Simon Cowell insider" as saying that she won't be back for season 2.

(Fans of the series will recall that both Abdul and Scherzinger came under fire following the surprise elimination of contestant Drew Ryniewicz.)

If the reports that Abdul is also off the show are true, that means only Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid - who has made quick work of signing "X Factor" winner Melanie Amaro as well as contestants Marcus Canty, Astro and Chris Rene to his label Epic Records - are the only two left standing after the first season.

Although the success of the first season may not have been up to Cowell's standards, Entertainment Weekly has reported that "X Factor" did come in No. 1 in the ratings among unscripted shows for the fall.

Cowell previously told CNN as "X Factor" wrapped up its first season in December, "Never finish a season thinking it's the best you've ever done, because you have to feel that you can get better...I think I probably came here a bit too cocky, but I'm cocky by nature."

What do you think of the switch-up? Was it to be expected?

you know what? i actually think the deadlock is a good system because it teaches a very valuable lesson...if you don't your favorite to go home then make sure YOU VOTE FOR THEM. Just like what happened with Pia Toscano and other contestants on AI last season, don't assume you don't have to vote for someone because you think they'll be safe for sure. In the end, the only ones we have to blame for contestants leaving is ourselves, not the judges. For all we know, if the judges hadn't made the decisions they did, your favorite contestants may not have even made it as far as they did.

Interesting to read opinions on opposite ends of the spectrum. I will add my own.

I like X Factor; don't like AI. Liked Steve Jones, don't like Ryan Seacrest. I thought Simon, Paula, Nicole, and Reid made up a perfect judging panel. I think they will even be better in future seasons but it's too late, some of them have been axed. I agree with one comment that they should add guest judges like Elton John, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, etc. and also to make it an odd number to break any score ties.

Funny how many of you dislike LA Reid and calls him racist. Doe Chris Rene no count as white? If you don't like rap, you simply don't like rap and therefore cannot comment on Astro. Those who do appreciate hip hop can immediately see that Astro was special. No question about it. LA Reid is no more egotistical than Simon. In the end, I agree with Steve and Nicole getting the boot. I'd like to keep Paula as I think she actually did a better job on this show than she did on AI.

i am glad Nicole is gone. when her and Paula would not let any girls through that were attractive was BS. i could care less how they look though but they were being dumb b$$%#%@. The one thing that didnt work for the show was the whole mentor system. It made every judge bias against the other contestants. which is not fair to the contestants. Lets replace Steve jones with Andy Dick this show would be great and replace Nicole with Kathy Griffin.

The one person who had a great shot at winning was turfed by Simon and that was Jazzlen Little, hope to see her again. As for Nicole and Paula, if you cannot eliminate a contestant you should not be a judge. That's what you get the big bucks for. That goes for all the judges. Contestants should not be broken up in teams, we all saw how well that worked.

For those of you that think LA is racist for the people he picked to sign for HIS company, aren't there plenty of WHITE OWNED RECORD companies that could sign the white acts you like. Better yet,you could sign them to your company.

Won't miss either of them. Jones is nice looking, but like a stick of wood, he's that stiff. No charisma. I like Nicole Scherzinger as a performer. She sucked mightly as a judge. The Drew mess was the last stsraw for me. I think it was a mistake for Cowell to bring Paula Abdul on, especially ditching Cheryl Cole. How stupid was that? That girl would have won people over and been a big hit, regardless what anyone might say. The Simon and Paula flirtation thing is over – done – stick a fork, etc. Now it looks like your drunken auntie and uncle at New Years – a little on the amusing side, but mostly on the ewwww side. If Simon is smart, he'll bring Dermot (never thought I'd miss Dermot, but there it is) and Cheryl and get Danni for the 4th seat. Jmho.

Won't miss Nicole or Steve. Steve seems like a nice guy, but he was a stiff shirt trying really, really hard not to be. Nicole was hot air and not much substance, but she sure loved the sound of her voice. Paula did OK but I wouldn't be happ or sad to see her go. I think LA was perhaps a bit bias, but he knows his market and is obviously a strong business person or he wouldn't be where he is. If he thought a contestant would make him money in his market, he'd sign them no matter what their ethnicity/race (btw, I'm caucasion). I do think they need to retool the format a bit. The group piece was a joke. They kept and formed groups that were of inferior talent to many individuals that didn't make it. And the whole mentor thing became a joke as each of the judges would never vote against their contestant no matter what so it became a 2 person vote at best and a tie breaker at worst if the judges didn't have the courage to make a call. Need to switch things up somehow in order to keep the judges from being too personally invested into the contestants to make an objective call based off of talent.

Nicole was the worst mentor ever! She did nothing to help Josh, he has more natural talent than she could ever dream of having! Plus, if she was supposed to be a judge then actually do some JUDGING!!!! If you're job is to pick someone don't wimp out and not make a decision. That is part of what you're getting PAID to do! As for Steve, he seemed like a nice guy but he was boring didn't add anything to show. Especially when some other guy was doing the intro's!

I loved the X-Factor. And I usually agree with Simon 95% of the time. So I'm happy with his clean-house. Steve Jones, though handsome, lacked tv personality. Paula's continued dishonest critiques covered with bllsht, were still annoying, at best. And, Nicole, unfortunately, does not yet have the backbone to be a judge. She seemed to think if she SAID all the right things, she would be popular. When she need to be popular, was to DO the right thing.

everyone needs to cut nicole some slack. first of all, most of you are only mad because the little girl got eliminated, but how many of you actually think she was going to win? Whether she got eliminated when she did or closer to the finale, she was going to leave the show at some point. second, have any of you even sany of the other x factors? the deadlock is nothing something they made up for the american version. they've used it every so often in the other installments because the show is well aware that sometimes it's incredibly hard to make a decision. that's why they have people vote as well, so if you want to blame someone for the little girl leaving, blame all those who didn't vote for her. and for those of you who think that she's completely and only into herself, i was at one of the tapings, and i have to say she probably received the most love from the audience.

I didn't expect the little girl to win. I think it's fine that she got that far and left. My beef with Nichole is that she was there as a judge, which is a leadership position, and she never was a leader. The cutting of the little girl just brought it to light for everyone else who didn't think it was obvious by that point. She wasn't a leader, she didn't express valuable opinions that were her own original thoughts, and she doesn't belong as a judge if she can't make a decision.

The girl is young and has proven herself as a performer to the world. She will be fine.

I hope they add more swooshes, wooshes, and kabooms to the sound effects between segments next season. and make them louder too. it makes the show so exciting to hear these sound effects, especially when they drown out the music and dialog. more visual effects too – to go with the sound effects. oh yes, and more cheering and applause from "the audience" would help. and one more thing – let's turn off the microphones of all those pesky people standing on the stage ... and while you're at it – let's ditch the microphones on those four people behind the desk too.

The show absolutely sucked. I watched about 40 minutes of the first show and a couple of ten minute "drop-ins" 2 or 3 additional times.

Basically, same old same old, with the worst of Americas Got Talent and American Idol. They may be nice people, but L.A. Reid, Jones and Nicole have zero charisma except for Nicole being very pretty.

What was REALLY a big turn off was the super gushing over,. at best, run of the mill performances. And, he may be a really nice kid, but the hyperbole re: Astro was almost unbelievable;-–a teen age rapper??? Oh, wow. Just what I can't wait to see. " What incredible talent;-a true superstar".. Please, give us a break.

I can'y believe the show had as many viewers as it did after being hyped so much for almost a year before it aired.

Thank you Simon! Next LA Reid gets the boot, too argumentative and most likely a racist. Bring in fresh judges and have them rotate. People we all respect. Elton John, George Michael, Bon Jovi, Pink, Mariah, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Justin Bieber, the show would be a smash!

Did you really just include Justin Beibers name along with all those legends? Really? You were joking right? You had to be.

You might be right about L.A./racism. Notice who he didn't sign to his record company? Josh, who happened to be better than Astro, Marcus and Chris (all of whom he did sign) combined. Simon's stuck with L.A. according to reports because he's backing the winner with his record company, which is too bad for us viewers.

I'm not LA Reid's fan, but I can't help but to think that his "racism" actually teaches some Caucasians lesson on racism. How ironic, you know, if blacks are being discriminated, it's ok, but when whites being discriminated, then it's racism.

The problem is not the judges or the host, its that the show sucks. How many singing shows do we need. In my opinion – none. They all are the same to me – and I'm not iimpressed.

Great! Then let's kill idol. It's been dead for years now anyway. We can then move Randy and Ryan to X factor. That combo worked on Idol in the first few years. It's the Idol talent that got boring.

They also aren't doing anybody any favors by making 12 year olds eligible. It's not fair to them or to us. Besides, their voices change, so why in the world do they think it's a good idea to feature them when they are so young and might not last in the industry.

This is great news. The host was seriously annoying and Trying to hard to be a certain idol host. As for Nicole She was a coward when it came time to boot people.. The show was so good till end when the last 3 episodes when better singers went home. Then to see a girl win who should never of been in the bottom four. IT is all scripted in the end. Shocking a pretty tanned girl won, not a thicker less attractive older male who blew away every one every week. Was the typical Simon bs.

Thank you for seeing the light and getting rid of the two weakest links...Nicole and Steve Jones! I swore if either of them were on this upcoming year, I would not watch the show. As far as the rumors of Paula going, that may be a good thing also.

They (and you) have it just about right. I would add Paula to out-list, too. The whining and crying and refusing to kick off contestants was unprofessional as heck. I also hope they tone down that stage backdrop.

I would rather keep Paula and get rid of LA Reid. He was too racist and rarely gave compliments to anyone other than his own "homies". As evidence shows, he signed all 3 of his people while the MUCH better singers didn't get anything. He can't be open to other people. He is out for himself and that's it.

If Simon boots Paula off, it's only because he wants her to be a "yes" girl. This is the first season (incl. Idol) I've actually seen Paula do a great job as a judge. Nicole...don't mind them replacing her. Steve...did fine as far as I was concerned. It isn't about the host. Ya want to bring on Ryan, Simon?

Fire the producers! The show blew because of the format. Skip the drama and stick to the talent. It felt like watching America's Got Talent for singers only. I like Cowell but he needs to put his foot down and keep it real.

I watched about 10 min of this show. It is just another American Idol. I thought it was going to more than just a singing show.

The difference between X-Factor and American Idol, is that on X-Factor the most talented actually won.

Another difference is this show allows anyone from age 12 to ???? to compete. American Idol only takes young people....16-28 I believe.

Agree about the most talented winning. I liked the fact that the final entrants weren't cookie cutter Britneys or Biebers. The only downside was watching the creepy look on Simon's face when he watched Drew perform. I wanted to slap him upside the head and say, "Dude, she's 14. Eww!"

I thought this show was going to feature mutants showing who had the coolest powers. Turns out to be yet another "Star Search" singing show.

What a waste of air time.
