'One Life to Live' characters find new life on 'General Hospital'

When “One Life to Live” ends its 43-year run on Friday, some of the series’ beloved characters will find a new home on “General Hospital.”

New York Daily News reports that actors Kassie DePaiva, Roger Howarth, Michael Easton and Kristen Alderson will resume their roles on the still-standing ABC soap opera.

“We have a very exciting story planned for the citizens of Port Charles, with Sonny Corinthos at the center of it," "General Hospital’s” executive producer Frank Valentini said in a statement to the New York Daily News. "I am confident viewers and fans alike will be exited by the arrival of John (Easton), Starr (Alderson), Blair (DePaiva) and Todd (Howarth). Incorporating characters from ‘One Life to Live’ will continue the legacy of the show as we weave them into ‘General Hospital.’”

Soap operas have had a rough time of it in the past few years.

“All My Children” got the boot last year due to poor ratings and CBS soap “Guiding Light” went off the air in 2009.

I do trust all of the ideas you have offered on your post. They're really convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are too short for novices. May just you please extend them a bit from next time? Thank you for the post.

Agree with most of the above, but my biggest disappointment is that you think Katie Couric can get good ratings.. After her interview with Sara Palin, I would rather go to the dentist.

This OLTL coming to GH is horrible. I never liked OLTL and these characters that just showed up on GH are reminding me why. Their acting style is ruining the flavor that I normally love about GH. I've been a GH fan since the 80s and when they went all Mob in the 90s I loved it even more. I was happy to see that GH didn't get cancelled when all the other soaps fell by the waist side. GH is the only good one anyway. These OLTL characters are going to end up getting GH cancelled just like their own show did. Horrible decision ABC.

In TOTAL agreement. If we didn't watch OLTL because we found the story lines and the characters BORING, why would we continue to watch GH as it becomes watered down to the OLTL level? That Starr Manning character is the quintessential queen of obnoxious and dramatic overacting. The story line has her currently taking on the head of the mob Sonny Corinthos? Trash. Been watching GH since the 1960s. Maybe I'll just switch to a soap on another channel.

Right there with you. GH was my guilty pleasure, but now I'm so put off by the whining of Star's character that I'm over it. OLTL was cancelled for a reason.

I miss OLTL. I don't want GH to go off. abc are you kidding ? katie Couric.. abc thinks if they give us a couple of people from our soap we will all be happy. Pine Vally, Landview, Port Charles. Way different. abc cares NOTHING for their viewers. And please do not put those 2 soft talking vampires as a couple AGAIN. Remeamber when NBC changed it's mind and put Leno back on at 11:30 ? They try to be intune with their viewers. WE have been screaming at abc for months. they don't care. Lots of good stuff on cable. BOYCOTT abc. Make them LAST in the ratings an & pm.

Some of us like both shows and are happy that this is happening. More importantly, OLTL had better ratings than GH when it went off the air. If having these characters on GH can bring some of OLTL's viewers to GH, then you all should thank your lucky stars that GH is getting new viewers in the wake of the corpses of longtime soap operas. This can help your show stay on the air a little longer. They're all going the way of the dodo soon, so enjoy them however you can get them.

OLTL had better viewers then GH. OLTL got cancelled because ABC is stupid. And now GH will be on for 50 years yay! Because Ron C and Frank V succeded ;D And as for bringing some OLTL characters to GH...I say BRILLIANT, that will bring OLTL viewers that never watched GH to watch it, and I for one just LOVED the characters on the show. Yes,I admit the acting on OLTL was not even close to the actors on GH,but hey GH actors are PHENOMENAL,NO soap is even close, and I have watched severals. But of course there are actors that are really really good on OLTL, like Kassie DePaiva(Blair),Roger Howarth(Todd),Michael Easton(McBain), Trevor St. John(Victor/"Todd"), Florencia Lozano(Téa). And I think most people are really loving OLTL characters on GH, Blair&Carly,Todd&Carly,Todd&Sonny, Sam&McBain,McBain&Jason,McBain&Sonny,McBain&Carly, Starr&Michael meeting was brilliant and the acting was AMAZING.And McBain&Anna knowing each other and McBain&Luke meeting was brilliant. I can't wait for more 😉
      Have a nice Day!

Ratings are NOT why OLTL was cancelled. Soaps are getting cancelled because they're more expensive to produce than a one-set, one-host talk show. GH is living on borrowed time. Enjoy.

I have been an ABC fan, since (as a young teen) my parents purchased cable TV. I watched OLTL & AMC from day one; I raised my chidren watching both; I watched the show straight thru to my early retirement and then on to its cancellation.

l no longer watch ABC ... PERIOD. You cxld two wonderful family shows I was proud to watch with my children, my mother and my grandmother. At one time I watched General Hospital as well right up until Brenda left the show. I do not and will not watch GH now because there is FAR too much violence involved in this program. The MAFIA as key characters?? Come on – what does the show teach our children and grandchildren, that it's okay to be in the Mafia if you have a strong likable character? I tuned back in to GH February 1 2012, as we the fans of OLTL were promised a return of some much loved characters. It still hasn't happened, and will it ever?

I don't think any of us are helping our cause by comparing one soap to another. AMC, et al, had their times of lousy writing and of great writing.
I've been a shut-in for decades. Swore I'd never give in and watch soaps, but one rainy weekend at a cousin's with only one TV channel, well – – what can I say? I got hooked to a point where I scheduled my job around my soaps until the advent of VCR's.
I'm losing FRIENDS. At least, that's how I see it. For me, this is a horrible loss.
And the worst part is, even if ABC does see their error, what would it take to put these shows back together? The complexities of that alone would doom the effort.

Soaps ending has been good for On Demand in my house. When I'm sick, I used to just turn on ABC and let the shows play, but now I bypass all of the networks and look for a movie. If none are playing, I watch one from On Demand. I think the networks will be surprised when their ratings for the replacement shows are no better than their ratings were for soap operas. Eventually they'll have to start playing re-runs like the cable channels and showing only new stuff at night.

Nice to see this happening, but the bell is tolling for General Hospital and the rest. I give the daytime soap opera genre another year, maybe 18 months, at which point daytime TV will become the domain of shows like The Chew. After that we'll start seeing further whittling down of nighttime dramas, mark my words.

One more thing that needs to be said, some may not remember this but way back when, the soaps had very interesting african american families-what happened? How is it possible that there are no writers capable of incorporating interesting characters of different races? OLTL started with Destiny and her family-failed atrociously with eye candy Spanish mob family-whatever that was. Antonio and Cristian started good but then sleeping with the Buchanan sisters was just plain sick. GH puts one black man on and then pairs him with Carly and they both seem completely uninterested. AMC had Jesse-who was great. Whats the deal with that??? OLTL had Carla-I believe, this was many moons ago. I mean there are serious actors out there-then again, we do live in a world of no brains, no talent Kardashian crud......

Alison Perkins-along with Helena Cassadine-team up with Todd or Victor-just may be a fascinating idea. I know Helena is suppose to be against the Spencers, but since GH writers and awful producers managed to masacre the Spencer family-might be interesting.......(I dont know if its Alison Perkins, just fanatasing here)

I think just maybe GH was saved simply because a million years ago it was GH who saved the soaps with Gloria Monty and Luke and Laura. GH is tremendously sick and needs major help. OLTL was the better soap, GH has had the same dialogue and same storyline on repeat for the past 5 years or longer...just a thought.

Thank God-no Nat with John. I could never stomach that relationship, I find her so annoying. Not looking forward to the Sam, Jason, John triangle but maybe that will give life to John. I still wish Gh would hire Joe Lando as Jake Harrison. So many people could go from GH right now to make room for interesting characters, namely Steve, Olivia, Kate, Maggie, Matt, Ewan, Cassandra, Johnny, Patrick(if Robin leaves), Mac, Jax(he is so destroyed), Liz(with no Lucky-whats the point-her character also destroyed), Sean-then add Bo, Nora, Viki, Clint, Victor(PLEASE NO TEA-PAIR HIM WITH CARLY)-Carly and Blair would be interesting-except for the screaming. Ok, dreaming.....Rex as Dillion Quartermaine would be great. Tracy needs family other than Monica. Rex(forget the actors name) and Tony Geary would be great. again..dreaming.....still cant believe tptb think there isnt an audience for the soaps and not worth the cost. If every soap fan abandons daytime tv, then what????

Agree with you on the Nat thing, not a fan of her either. As for who you'd like to see go from GH, I agree with some but you have mentioned many, long time favs on that list that I'd hate to see go. My feeling is that this is GH's last ditch effort to pull out all the stops in trying to save the show from being officially cancelled (rumors that it was cancelled with the others but given an additional year to air). I think, given the fact that the whole transfer to online thing fizzled, that adding some of our favorite folks from OLTL is a great idea and I'm with you on a possible re-pairing of Michael Easton and Kelly Monaco (although there are rumors she will be leaving too). Sad to see some of our favorites getting fired or jumping ship but I think they probably know a whole lot more than we fans do on what the future holds :-(.

It is a shame that ABC can't seem to find any good shows any more. To take soaps off the air that have been watched for so long and replace them with a show called "The Chew" was ridiculous. Couldn't they find anything better for a name? The View, The Chew what's the difference? Both are boring and everyone talks at once if you can stand to watch that long. Now they think the revolution will change our ways of living or eating or cleaning or whatever. Too much of this is already on the air and it is boring. Bring us some good shows and not reality shows. Sick of them. They are not real and anyone who watches can tell they are scripted and some very poorly. give me something to make me think, something to make me want to watch, something to make me stay tuned for more than a minute. Duck, I work my backside off at a very stressful job dealing with total butt heads. I don't smoke cigarettes or take drugs, legal or otherwise, NEVER hit the snack machine or fast food drive-thrus, and limit my alcohol intake to the occasional Bloody Mary (Grey Goose, thanks!) OLTL is the one guilty pleasure that I allow myself – and it's a lot healthier than any of those vices listed above. If you have a problem with that, that's your problem.

Considering how many times Port Charles has been blown up in the last few years, it's a miracle there's anything left of the town! GH used to be my favorite soap. However, for about the last decade, the story lines have become stupid, and some of the actors aren't so great. I hope by adding the actors from my all-time favorite soap (started watching in '76 when I was in middle school) GH is watchable again.

I am so mad at ABC...they are dead to me now (well...after today). OLTL was a well-written soap that had characters you could connect to. David, I will miss the most. His comic sense and wit was refreshing. Blair, John, Vicki, Jessica, and Star were great as well. Natalie was the only one who drove me absolutely crazy (John, you were better off with Blair!). Even some of the child actors were quite good, (Shane, Jack, Matthew). The battles between Dorian and Vicki are classic! I can't understand how a poorly written show with mediocre acting like General Hospital can survive and this one, with clever plot lines, bites the dust....especially for crappy reality TV. I am not sure I can watch GH with OLTL actors...it just won't be the same. But, Maybe with OLTL's head writer on board, things will improve. And I agree with everyone...the Chew is a stinker! Boycott ABC, they have it coming. What kind of morons make these decisions anyway? Get a freakin clue ABC and bring back OLTL.

Nope...the former head of ABC daytime programs hates all soaps, thinks they are passe' and most of all, hates paying out salaries to a large cast and crew (it is estimated that the cancelling of the two shows put appx. 700 people out of work !). GH survived, at least until Sept., because it is the most highly viewed among the three shows.

I agree with other responses. I refuse to watch The Chew and will NOT watch the One Life to Live replacement. I will boycott ABC in the afternoon until GH comes on. I had also stopped watching GH because of the lack of story but incorporating OLTL characters should give it new life. I just hope they don't lower them to mob violence every day which has become boring. I'll watch FOX until GH comes on daily.

Enough of the reality shows – check out History and Discovery channels for that programming – give us back OLTL and the other lost soaps. I hope these characters flourish on GH and it brings more of the great actors back to daytime.

I use to watch ABC from Good Morning America to nightly news because they had so many shows that I love. I think they have taken a very BIG wrong turn. After canceling All My Children, and One Life To Live, then so many nightly shows...... I got NEWS for ABC. There are many other channels, and now, I go out of my way to create other interests, I either turn the TV off, or I have created other interests on OTHER Channels. The guy that made the ultimate decision......wrong move.

I can't believe that they really decided to cancel OLTL. ABC must be crazy! OLTL is the best soap opera out there. I remember as a kid my mom would be watching soap operas when I came home from school. I had no choice, but to watch them. I vowed never to watch soaps when I got older......as a child they bored me. A few years back a client of mine got me into OLTL and I haven't missed an episode yet. I even have it automatically recording while I'm at work. I love it and EVERYONE on it. I tried watching GH, but it just didn't interest me. It's good that some of the characters will be moved to GH, but I love them all. It won't be right without the whole gang. I can't see this working. They just need to keep OLTL and take off GH.

This is a brilliant idea meshing the characters from OLTL into GENERAL HOSPITAL. In fact, why don't they go even further and bring Erica Kane, Adam Chandler, and Tad Martin to Port Charles? I have always thought that intertwining all the soaps into one huge SOAP OPERA was the way to save the genre. My money is on the ratings going SKY HIGH the very day the characters from Llanview step foot in Port Charles.

I watch very little ABC anyway, so now I'll have GH - and when they cancel it and put Katie Couric on that will be the end of my ABC watching.

I started watching AMC, OLTL & GH, w/my now deceased Mother in '74. Today she would be 83 and raising pure hell that her fav soaps have been wiped off ABC. I too, will miss my ABC soaps. I left GH years ago. Too much mob stories, guns and killings only go so far. Therefore, GH became very boring. I will however, tune into GH to see how the ppl of Llanview intertwine w/the ppl in Port Charles. I too watched Dark Shadows. ABC has taken away my escape from reality of downtime during my lunch break. This is maddening. ABC bringing on the Chew & the Revolution will have no place in my home. I'm sick to death of talk shows & reality shows. My life has been turned upside down of what to do while the children I care for, nap. Daytime/Nighttime TV on ABC has gone to the dogs!

Comments: Ive watched this story from the very bginning and I'm very sad to see it end. I think this is the biggest mistake ABC has made; the second biggest mistake is moving John to General Hospital without Natalie and their baby. Blair, Todd and Starr without their son's why break up families. I also think since the Quartermaines are for the most part none existing why not keep the rich families in the story line move the Lord's to replace the Quartermaines and the Bucahans can replace the Casadines.Elizabeth can be removed from General Hospital her character is so boring and her children are hardly ever seen so I think that's the perfect spot for Rex and Gigi.David can replace Steve Then ABC will have the best of the best and just maybe then ABC will be back in the good Graces of the Soap Fans with a Five Star Soap to boot ! I would imagine that not all actors/actresses are willing to move from one coast to the other......although that is an actors way of life, to have to follow the jobs, it would be pretty expensive to transplant your family from N. I am NOT loving this idea! Although the actor who plays John McBain would be a welcome to GH IF they created a NEW character for him. To take all these SAME characters from "One Life to Live" which was just cancelled and bring the characters on to "General Hospital" using it as a catalyste for continuing the cancelled show does not sit right. I occasionally watched "OLTL" BUT "General Hospital" is the show I along with MANY have watched for YEARS! I understand the headwriter of "OLTL" took over writing for "GH" BUT to let him take the cast from "OLTL" over to "GH" is just wrong! The characters and storyline has ALWAYS been stronger. They don't need "OLTL" characters. Hire whatever actors you want BUT let "General Hospital" invent the characters and storyline. We don't need sloppy seconds!

I just finished crying my heart out watching the second last episode of OLTL. It is the only soap that I have enjoyed for the past 34 years. I've seen babies born and watched them become adults. I've watched while people did good and did evil, lived their lives and died. I have enjoyed every aspect of this show and am going to miss it terribly. I will never watch it's replacement. Just what we didn't need-another talk show. I am so disappointed in ABC, that, even if this turns out to be a good show, I will never watch it. The explanation is very simple. Ratings for soaps have fallen tremendously over the last ten years. Soaps used to get over 20 million viewers, and now they are getting less than 3 million. Do a google search, check out the past and present ratings for soaps. They are very very expensive shows to make, and with the ratings only a shell of their former selves, they are losing money. The shows they replace them with are cheap to make, and don't require huge ratings to make money.

      It's just that simple.

The chew will never make it. ABC is making a huge mistake.. After the last episode of OLTL, I will use the parental controls to block any ABC show in my home.. including football...

If you want to help, you can still tune in to GH in your time zone, just so they get the viewers in the tally. That's what I did for All My Children to try and get it's count up. I had stopped watching that one a few yrs. before but I was sure as he!! going to try and do everything I could to keep it on the air.

I do not want it to end as that is the only show I watch and enjoy on ABC . What are they thinking! Another talk show? well by by ABC.

Because talk shows are MUCH cheaper to produce and do not require big ratings. Soaps are expensive and their ratings have been in steady steady decline for well over a decade. If you bothered to do research on the subject rather than just whine, you would learn a lot more about the realities of today's television market.

The best thing for ABC's 3:00 EST hour is to gradually replace everything about GH with OLTL. Like others, I left GH 2-3 years ago when it all went mob, mob, mob and there wasn't a Quartermaine in sight anymore. Can't understand how ABC kept that on and cancelled OLTL. I will watch GH once again in February and be hopeful. Don't be shy about going beyond a transfusion to a transplant of 'one life' at the 'hospital', Mr. V.

As a fan of GH for it's entire run on daytime, I have to say it is improving in that area and has put Monica Q. and Edward Q. back on (although Edward doesn't make as many appearances now-a-days, probably due to health reasons). The reason GH has centered on the mob so much in recent years, is because that's who generates the most fan mail, e-mails, etc. and are the highest paid stars, excluding Tony Geary. I think the four actors who have announced they are coming over (and Trevor St. John was just announced) will be a great addition to GH, even though it has always had the most cast members of any soap.

None of this will matter. GH is going off the air too. They just want stupid cooking and crap shows on. We who have watched this for 20-30 years do not matter to them. Do not know how they judge anything when people tape the dam shows because they work etc...

Sandy – You may be correct in that GH was cancelled at the same time the other two shows were but given an additional year to air. The latest on that is that GH is fighting for a place come Sept. on the lineup......that ABC will put Katic Couric's show in the GH slot and then the battle will come down to which two other shows they will go with. They are waiting to compare ratings between The 'Spew', The 'Revultion' and GH and will go with the two shows that have the highest ratings. GH is fighting for it's life so it's up to us fans to keep watching !

Also, I totally agree about how those who tape the show do not count in the ratings tally. Incredible in this day and age of technology, that those viewers do not count !

Oh.....and I'll end this the way I have every other post, e-mail, fax, letter and social networking sites (since April) re these cancellations..........GO TO HE!! ABC !!!

I'll give GH another chance if Roger Howarth is going to be on there. I quit watching a couple of years ago out of sheer boredom. Hope the writing improves, and they give OLTL characters a good story arc.

I have always loved Roger Howarth (Todd) and glad he came back and will go to GH. He made you want to hate him....but only shows how good this actor hones his craft if he can do that! I look forward to what's in store for him and Kassie DePaiva (Blair) and where Kristen Alderson (Starr) will fit in while her career as a singer is taking off in LA. And gotta love bad boy/good cop Michael Eason (John)...so looking to see how he works out in Genoa City! 🙂

I LOVE all ABC Soaps, AMC, OLTL and GH. I'm so glad they're bringing on some other actors from OLTL it's nice for the actors. I hope that eventually the "powers that be" at ABC will realize the genre is special, the majority of the population is not a reality tv population. I'm only 31 and have been watching GH since I was in High School then caught on to the other shows. I'm hoping that they realize the shows that replaced AMC and OLTL aren't any good and bring back the soaps we all know and love. Here's to hoping:) OH and google Erika Slezak's Huffington Post interview, she really put her thoughts out there....i love it! Brian Fron, you're an idiot! Just saying.

The Chew does suck. Its just a group of people talking ,cooking, and then chewing while they talk which is totally disgusting to watch and listen to!!!. What a waste of air time.I hope cancelling the daytime shows comes back to bite 'em!

It's so sad about All My Children and One Life to Live, I hope everyone black balls The Chew and the other stupid show they are replacing OLTL with. They were the best soaps and they have so much history. It seems as if all the good stuff is ending and all we are left with is reality shows and talk shows where famous go on and talk about themselves and how great they think they are. What a shame to loose such wonderful soaps, they are so wrong to cancel these soaps. GH is like all the other shows where they are either in a hospital or killing someone. What a bummer:(

Amen! I can't imagine another reality, day time talk show. I like the View, but really, The Chew? ABC has now succeeded in losing me from an all day viewer to local news at 11 and GH. I come back for local news. If it weren't for my local station, ABC would be gone most of the time

i still can't belive that OLTL is off. the chew has GOT to be the dumbest show on TV. and carla, PLEASE take her off. she just down right makes an ass of herself. and i guess that ABC thought by bringing ty pennington to the new show would help them. NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as much as i like ty, there is no way in h–l that i will watch this show. the guy who is going to do the fashion part is just as bad as carla from the chew, plus the fact that i am boycotting because it is replacing a show what i have watch since i was in high school. SCREW ABC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may not know or like the characters and I am not sure how they will fit in, but they will bring in new viewers to GH...which is good for the show. I watched GH on and off for years and stopped again in 2011, just couldn't find anything interesting in GH's writing to keep me watching. I tuned back in to OLTL in 2011 when they brought the real Todd back and have watched every episode until the end. I was going to watch KMc's exit from GH but that was it. Now that Todd and Blair are going to GH, I just got to know what's going to happen with them.

If people still don't think they will bring in viewers. Do a GOOGLE search of Todd and Blair and see how many fan sites they have or a YOUTUBE search of Todd and Blair and see how much stuff is uploaded about them every day.

I love the concept but I really think that Dr. David Hayward coming to GH would be better fit. Just think about David messing with Robin and Patrick! Storyline with David verses Todd verses Sonny or David verses Carly would be must see daytime TV! General Hospital would be a soap melting pot with a fusion of our beloved bad boys!

i loved OLTL because it had humor as well as drama. When Todd came back I just loved it. I am lost without it now and refuse to watch the Chew or Revolution. I hate ABC for canceling the best soap there was. I dont watch GH much because it's always dark and the same but will when the One Life characters are on it and see how it works. I hoped some station would pick up One Life but it didnt happen.

I'm sorry but I'm not for this AT ALL. I was shocked to see Garin Wolf already replaced as head writer for General and to see Ron Carlivati????? What is this????? Turning into One Life to Live????????????????

I'm sorry, but if General characters are slowly being pushed out, I'm out for good. This has been my show for over 30 years and if it's being taken over by a show that couldn't hold its ground, then that's just ridiculous.

Sorry about you, Garin. You were doing an excellent job as was Jill Pharin Phelps. I was suprised to see you out of the production as well. It's really sad. I'm also sick of the new credits in the beginning, no match-ups at "half-time", and FINALLY seeing Jason and Sam after, what, almost two weeks???????????????????????????

      Sad. Very sad.
