Gaga, Bieber are most charitable celebs of 2011

Lady Gaga tops DoSomething.org's list of the Top 20 Celebs Gone Good for the second year in a row, according to the site.

The list, compiled by the volunteer organization, ranks celebrities according to their charitable work and donations.

The "Born This Way" singer held on to her No. 1 spot thanks to her anti-bullying efforts, like her Born This Way Foundation. Gaga is followed by fellow pop star Justin Bieber.

Bieber, who sat at No. 10 on last year's list, nabs second place in 2011. He launched the Believe Charity Drive, benefiting music education and children’s cancer, and also encouraged fans to participate in Pencils of Promise, which raises money for new schools.

George Clooney comes in third place, followed by Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Will and Jada also aren’t the only power couple who give back. Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore (despite splitting up in November) and Brangelina also made the list.

(Flying solo, Nick Cannon makes the list without wife Mariah Carey.)

It's funny that Bono isn't on it with all the awards he gets for humanitarian actions. If you look at what he actually does, it's very little. He constantly talks and visits places but doesn't donate anything. What a fraud, atleast he makes horrible music to match his charity actions.

I'm sorry but the presidential and vice presidential whinings are foolish. Obama, bush, or biden giving a few more thousand dollars is nothing compared to the ways they can and could affect policy to help people. Let's see. Given the choice between them helping to push through legislation to help all people for ever- or until possibly repealed- or donating $10k to some charity that will probably take half to pay their execs and admin, I'll take the policy.

I would have to agree. This is a pretty bogus list. It is just filler and not serious journalism on CNN's part. I really question how you properly quantify any of this. Many people give gifts in private so there is no way to tell how much they have really done. Not to mention some of the celebrities only volunteer their time to improve their image and thus make money off it. Furthermore just doing something is not always the best. How do you tell what really helped people and didn't hurt them? How can you take serious someone who makes a hundred million a year and then only gives a million or two and/or 20 hours of time? It is only 2 percent of their money with millions to spare and free time they already had. Or what about celebrities who are dedicated full time to certain causes and thus are off Hollywood's radar. It does not seem like they have anyone on this list in that category. I wish there was a way to actual split CNN. Some of the reporting is really good, but some of it is just trying to propagate their own personal beliefs.

    Food for thought.

President Obama (according to his 2009 tax return) donated $329,100 to charity in 2009. He earned about $5.5 million dollars in adjusted gross income. This means he gave roughly 6% of his income to charity. Pretty bad for somebody earning millions. Joe Biden in the same year gave only $4,820 to charity. His AGI was $333,182, making his donations about 1.4% of his AGI. Pathetic!

According to his 2007 tax return, GWB gave almost 18% of his Adjusted Gross Income to charity. Obama gave about 6% in 2009, and he earned 6 times as much as Bush.

It is a good thing when people give to charity, whether they are famous or unknown, and whether they give publicly or anonymously. You may dislike the music, acting, or public personas of these people, but they have done a good thing by helping others. Some people here have stated that giving anonymously is "how charity should work", and that giving publicly is "self-promotion". That is not necessarily true. Those who have found themselves in the public eye have an uncommon opportunity to set an example for the rest of us. When they choose to do it by helping others instead of acting like idiots, as celebrities too often do, we should be proud. (And, for the record, I have a friend whose son committed suicide because of bullying. So even though I am not a Gaga fan I do think her cause is a worthy one.)

    Jabe,

One day when you're lying in bed terminally ill with an incurable disease, I hope you pick up the paper and read about how Justin Bieber had the chance to donate 10 million bucks to research your ailment, but decided to give it to manatee rehabilitation instead.

monetary donations are tax deductible in the united states. steve A's comment about time is on the money (pardon the pun) - you can't buy time. and it's not that i'm a hater, i'm pragmatic. generousness is an admirable quality nonetheless.

I wish they would donate to organizations that are trying to save the environment. This would do so much more for humanity. Our environment is trashed and will soon kill us all.

What is with celebrities and animal rights? I suspect they feel such strong attachment to the animals because most of them can't keep friendships or hold meaningful relationships with HUMAN BEINGS. I do support basic animal rights but many of these charities are nuts. Flame on, internet heroes.

It is incredible how angry you all are about people donating. If you all hate celebrities so much, why read articles about them and waste your time posting? I say kudos to anyone who donates their time or money to help someone less fortunate or shed light on a cause they think is important. At least they aren't creating homeless camps in our city parks, pretending that their alleged protest is making a positive contribution to our communities.

they aren't generous at all; they have more money than they know what to do with. The poor widow, giving her last penny, gives more than the millions of dollars these freaks give.

Anti-bullying movement gets the number one spot????? There are children dying of starvation and genocide but the number one spot goes to a charity designed to relieve over privileged American kids from getting wedgies and noogies? What a freaking joke.

So the kids that commit suicide because they are consistently harassed by their peers don't mean anything? Bullying rarely happens to the "over-privileged" children you talk about, but to kids who are at various disadvantages. YOU are the joke here.

They are the most charitable celebs that are known. Many give and donate anonymously, which is how charity should work really, or at least the people who give should be discrete about it. I always appreciate giving, but doing such to get attention is really annoying. Not everyone does that but some do and that is a shame...

    December 27, 2011 at 5:23 pm | Report abuse |

Exactly. Donating anonymously is charitable. Anything else is just plain self-promotion.

Wrong Lauren G. Sometimes a celebrities name behind a cause can greatly help bring attention to various issues. Call it self-promotion all you want. But if you have the power to try and bring change I think it is your responsibility to try and use that power. These people have star power and they are using it.
