Lowe's faces outcry after pulling 'All-American Muslim' ads

Retailer Lowe's is facing backlash from players in politics and entertainment after deciding to pull its advertisements from TLC's "All-American Muslim."

The Learning Channel's series follows five Muslim families living in Dearborn, Michigan, and Lowe's told CNN over the weekend that it has received "a significant amount of communication from every perspective possible" regarding the show.

"Individuals and groups have strong political and social views on this topic, and this program became a lightning rod for many of those views. As a result we did pull our advertising on this program. We believe it best to defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance."

While the move has received support from the Florida Family Association, which believes the TLC series is "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values," others have spoken out against it.

There's a petition out to encourage advertisers to continue supporting the series, and California Sen. Ted Lieu has also expressed his disagreement with Lowe's decision.

Lieu wrote a letter to Lowe's CEO calling the company's removal of ad spots from the program "bigoted, shameful and un-American," as well as "profoundly ignorant."

"Lowe's religious discrimination is the equivalent of a company asserting that it is pulling advertising from the Christian Broadcast Network's '700 Club' because the program somehow 'riskily hides' the agenda of Christian radicalized groups such as Aryan Nation," Lieu asserts in the letter. "That assertion would, of course, be utter nonsense and religious bigotry."

The senator also called for Lowe's to reinstate its advertising, along with an apology, or he'll encourage boycotts and "look into legislative remedies."

Those outside of the political sphere are outraged as well, with industry titan Russell Simmons, who is also chairman of The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, calling foul on Lowe's play.

"This can't happen in America, [Lowe's] needs to fix this immediately...There are American principles at stake here," Simmons told Entertainment Weekly. "This country is built on religious freedom. This is the kind of hate that tears the country apart."

"All-American Muslim" began last month on TLC, and airs at 10 p.m. on Sundays on the network.

I'm finished with LOEW'S because of their cowardice, in caving to a tiny group of bigots. SHAME ON YOU! Indeed, as a private company, they can do what they please with their money. I can ALSO do what I wish with mine. As a result, I will NEVER shop at LOEW'S again. Either they're run by cowards or are bigots themselves. In either case, I'm boycotting! SHAME ON YOU!

I think it's hilarious that so many folks here defend Lowe's actions on the basis of free speech when in reality Lowe's caved to pressure from people who were intolerant of free speech. Lowe's had already placed their ads with the show knowing full well what it was about!! This isn't free speech ... it's exactly the opposite.

    Racist Organization

Lowe's has eventually revealed that it is a racist organization/company. It would be revealed anyway...sooner or later. As a result of this I vow not to purchase anything more at Lowe's. Any well thinking person would give it a second thought before shopping at Lowe's. Supporting any racist company is akin to supporting racism and racial discrimination. Is,'t that obvious anyway?

Why would anyone think they have the right to tell any business where they can and cannot advertise. Lowe's owes no one an apology. I applaud Lowe's for having the courage to pull their ads. Political correctness has gone way overboard in this country and I think the majority of Americans are over it.

Lowe's and other corporate giants should have seen this coming and have learned a powerful lesson. Once you play the game, you are now bound by bigotry claims if you exit. This is why corporations–all of them–should quit trying to advance social agendas. Pepsi is renowned for it.

Lowes has a right to choose the programming it advertises on. With that said, Lowes chose a show to advertise on. They were fine up until they got calls/threats from people calling all Muslims terrorists and making the show out to something that its not.
Hate groups managed to bully Lowes and they caved. Lowes CHOSE to put their advertisements into this show because they new it was wholesome programming.
Just as All American Muslim has shown, these people are NOT terrorists. These are Americans with a different religion from others.

We'll let the Kardashians, Jersey Shore, Housewives of 'Whatever' go crazy on TV, but put a few Muslims on a TV show and everyone is pulling advertisements?

    FOR SHAME LOWES!

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from the consequences of said speech. Noone wants to take away Lowes free speech rights. We just want to hold Lowes accountable for that speech. This is so obvious a bigoted move that a blind man can see it. Take out the emotion and think rationally. Lowes advertises on the show "All American Muslim." (Free Speech) Lowes pulls advertising from same show because a Christian fundamentalist groups complains. (again free speech). Lowes even says so in its statement that the FFA was the driving force behind its decision. Lowes must now face the consequences of a group of people who see this free speech for what it is–bigoted!

I really don't think Lowes orginally sponsored this show to support Muslims or pulled its advertising because it does not support Muslims. Both decisions were based on trying to get additional business not to make a statement. It is a company not a political party or a foundation. However, it strikes me as odd that a company that originally supported a Muslim show is racist and that somehow makes other home improvement stores better. That comparison only works if both stores supported the show and only one folded. Now if another home improvement store decided to fill the advertising space you might have an argument.

There are so many ignorant people slamming Lowes who have no idea how business works. Businesses advertise on shows who's audience is the same as their target market. Through market research Lowes has decided that reaching this audience won't give them the bang for their buck as much as other shows. I guarantee you that if there was a show about satanic dog fighters, and the audience was primarily people who spend a lot on home improvement, Lowes would advertise on it. It has nothing to do with the content of the show; it's all about the demographics of the audience. Read a book on marketing then come back and comment.

Lowe’s is not a charity foundation but a corporation solely focused upon their profits and the intentions of their shareholders. Their choice to take their money out of this show may be seen at an angle as cowardly but truly it is for their best interest they made this decision. Although Lowe's decision to initially sponsor All-American Muslim may have not been made to discriminate or perpetuate conflict among Muslims and some Christians, in essence it is what has happened. When looking at numbers it is shown that the Muslim population who would be hurt by taking out the money is about 1 million less than the members of the Florida Family Association, the Christian group who made these claims. I do not blame Lowes but I believe they should have thought through the repercussions and aftermath of investing in a potentially controversial program like All-American Muslim. Instead I rest the blame upon the ignorant Florida Family Association who seem to me as a Christian group who targets Islam and Muslims all over the United States. This is not the first time the FFA has asked its members to boycott a certain company for helping an Islamic organization (Campbell’s was a victim to this bullying as well). Their claims that the show is unbalanced and only shows normal Muslims rather than portraying the evil Muslims with anti-USA agendas is flawed because not only are they stereotyping all Muslims to fit a terrorist mold but it shows they haven’t necessarily watched the show. It is true that Al Qaeda is a terrorist group who claims to terrorize for their religion, Islam, but it is important to understand that it isn’t the norm and most Muslims don’t even consider Al Qaeda’s motives as legitimate. The Muslim community has been hurt just as much and maybe even worse by 9/11 because not only did members of their community die in the towers but it sparked a wave of Islamophobia, hate crimes, and nationwide loathing upon them. This show, All-American Muslim, to me, is simply a reality show to illustrate to Americans the normalcy of Muslims and ease any Islamophobia that exists in our country. It is far less “trashy” then many popular shows of this time and shouldn’t be judged with a narrow mindset.

What about the so called christian group who pressured Lowe's and encouraged their followers to e-mail the sponsors to stop advertising? Did they not have the right to advertise to whatever show they wanted to? To the so called Florida Christian Family organization, stop spreading hate and instead of telling your followers to write letters to force companies from advertising. Ask them to pray, read the bible, help the less fortunate and leave the rest to GOD. People like you are un-Americans. True Americans have respect for all religions and believes. You call Muslims terrorist, read your comments, you are worse. They might have less than 1% of them as terrorist. I am afraid we have more Americans full of hate than anywhere else. This is all very impressive stuff. Just one more reason why the United States aren't so united after all. And poor Lowe's, with every right to make a decision, like the Ford Focus that nearly completed a left turn in front of an oncoming semi, only to put the car in reverse after spotting a police car nearby. Sometimes the best way to avoid a mess is to never start one in the first place. I stand to be corrected, but it seems to me that Lowe's would have been better off sticking with their first decision to run their ads.

I don't really care for reality shows at all, but I must admit I am slightly biased and proud to be a Detroit native amidst many cultures. Has anyone noticed you don't hear about any Arab uprisings or terror threats in Detroit? No Arab American takeovers,,suicide bombers,,etc.? Could be because Arab Americans are no different than anyone else on the planet. For all I know,, maybe the program attempted to prove this. Otherwise if the show stinks,, change the channel. I'm sure there are other ways to discover that people are people. If there were just one race, one religion, would we still have war? How many more centuries will it take to figure this out?

I am not going to dig on this show until I watch to even form an opinion. From the advertising of show, it appears trying to take a look into peoples lives who practice the "muslim" faith in America. Our country is based on the freedom of religion. I absolutely depise the people who took down the towers and killed hundreds of innocent lives. However, there are some people who were born in this country who have the muslim faith. From what I understand, it is not a violent religion. They are not out to get Americans. There is always be a group who will be out there to twist a religions views. Its really sad alot of people are so closed minded that we can not learn from others culture. Remember this...keep your friends close and your enemies closer. First of all, freedom of speech and expression 'rights' do NOT extend to the private sector. Secondly, a private company may spend its advertising dollars anywhere it sees fit. I find it hilarious that these left-wing nutcases will demand a company remove advertising dollars from any show that disagrees with THEIR worldview but then turn around and seem to want to force a company to advertise on another show. Pure, unadulterated hypocrisy. Third (and finally), why the heck is it that the only religion that we have to *AHEM* 'tolerate' in this country is ISLAM?!?! I don't see these self-righteous moonbats lining up to endorse CHRISTMAS or allow any sort of religious symbolism to be displayed anywhere that they might actually have to see it. A star of David? Some of you may believe this or not, but our country is so polarized at the moment, that I fear for the future. The basis of our foundation is being attacked by inside and outside interest. I find it hypocritical, that people will attack Christians in our own country as intolerant and ignorant while protecting the rights of a small Muslim minority. Let’s just make sure that we are fair. If we are going to pick on the Christians for their alleged intolerance, then we need to criticize the Muslims for turning their back of the genocide of Christian in their homelands.

Shocking how ignorant the comments are here... well not really shocking. No surprise at all how much hate flows through so many people, along with all kinds of dumb. It's ludicrous that people are using freedom of speech as a defense for Lowe's pulling their ads. Going on about how it's the American way to let them pull their ads from the show. So exactly why are people that disagree with the burning of churches and murdering of Christians in Egypt "hatemongering bigots"?

NOTHING could be further from the truth. Our city government has bent over backwards to accommodate every single area of their lifestyle. My children have had programs pulled from school because they need to create a more comfortable environment for the muslim children. Muslims look at me like I have a lot of nerve being where they live in our city. That is my problem with this show. It's a crock and should be pulled or at least shown how it really is here. I'm sure if a store pulled ads featuring Jewish or Christian families, many Americans would decide that they just wouldn't spend money at that store. I think many American feel the same way for a store that would pull their ads just because the families in a television series are Muslim. They have the right to pull their ad and Americans have the right to refuse to spend money in the store. This is what I've decided to do.

The irony of this all is that most of us don't have a problem with the Americanized Muslims who put country over religion–which is not the case for millions of Muslims worldwide who don't have a sense of nation like we Americans do. These families portrayed don't need a show to convince other Americans that they are "like everyone else." The show, in my opinion, is a waste of time for a feel-good populace.

You talk about how Muslims discriminate against us Jews, of which I am yet to experience by the way, but lets have look at the horrendous treatment Jews have suffered in the hands of Christians. But hey! Let's forget that and accuse every Muslim of being responsible for the actions of a few terrorists. How do Christian extremists think they are any less backwards than Muslim extremists?

Lowes has the right to advertise as they choose. This is less a condemnation of Lowes, but more about Modern Amerika. The American Taliban, like its Islamic counterpart, corrupts religion and uses cut-and-paste theology to justify bigotry, hatred and discrimination. Christianity is no less, nor more, cruel and oppressive than Islam. In fact, historically, Islamic societies have been far more tolerant than Christian countries. Jews held political office in the Ottoman Empire, but were legally confined to ghettos and prohibited from professions in Europe. Again, I don't blame Lowe's, I blame the American Taliban.

So to generalize is wrong. We don't say every priest is a rapist just because the Catholic religion has had some issues do we.

What I don't understand is that large companies can put there commercials up during Sister Wives and series like this which is something that the majority of Americans do not agree with but if we highlight another choice of life its wrong.

If this program is generally very popular, the advertisers will be lining up to take the slots that Lowes has vacated. If the advertisers are not lining up for the opportunity to fill the now available slots, then Lowes made a good business decision. A TV show is all about advertising, if you don't have a good show that a majority of viewers want to watch, then advertisers move away to support TV shows that do draw the biggest audience. Isn't that why a 30 second commercial on the Super Bowl costs millions of dollars to the advertiser?

Lowe's certainly has a right to advertise on whatever show it wishes to and to reach out to whatever market it feels will benefit its bottom line the most but by the same token Americans have the right to spend their money where they please and patriotic, right thinking Americans who have not been blinded by hate for other cultures inspired by so-called "Christian" groups have the right to boycott Lowe's and shop elsewhere as I will be doing. Similarly, Senator Lieu has the right to express his outrage and idignation at Lowe's for caving in to a bunch of bigots. We need more people in politics like him.

Wow.. some of you must live in a bubble... you've never had a Muslim neighbor/coworker/friend? Are you actually serious when you say these people are ALL terrorists and extremists practice Sharia law? Really? I've been in the US for the past 20 years and I've met plenty of Muslim-Americans who are very similar to those on the show, which is at least a first step (not a perfect portrayal) in showing other Americans that most Muslims are actually pretty cool (and for my experience, usually pretty bright, educated, and highly accomplished). I don't condone what goes on in many Middle Eastern countries and what some of their followers do, but to say that the show is hiding some "secret agenda" or "propaganda" is ignorant, just get out there and meet people for yourself and you'll see. I'm sorry that Lowe's pull the ad to cater to some so called "christians" (in my opinion, that is not what Christ is about), because it sets the wrong example. It feeds into some delusions that some people have. That's all. We need to speak up about this and stop hating each other and try to pull the country together!

    BLOOD TESTING FOR APPLICANTS
Never was I required to sit for a blood test until I applied to Lowe's Home Improvement in Garner, NC. There were only two of us applying for work at the time. They claimed it was a part of their drug testing policy and forced both of us to take that in addition to a cheek swab. I had never experienced anything like that and wondered if they had performed a DNA test to discriminate in their hiring practices. If anyone else was forced to do this – report that store.

The Muslim women are subjected daily to the very ills women's rights movements have sought to eradicate in America since it was established. What control over a womans mind and body? Covering yourself up in Islam is recommended, but it's still a choice. Many women choose not to, some choose to. You're confusing Religion with Culture here, in some middle eastern countries they do tend to be a little more overpowering when it comes to women, but that has NOTHING to do with religion, that is the CULTURE of that specific country. It is not something Islam encourages. They just use it as an excuse to lay these rules down. Again...people should research a little more before assuming. Just to clarify... I know of no Pope who has ever ordered anyone to be murdered. Popes called for (not ordered) crusades, but EVERY crusade was in response to an invasion of the holy land... so they were all self-defense and not murder. And the Spanish Inquisition which had some local corruption in the early years, was considered one of the most just courts in Europe for centuries. To clear up "free speech" rights for those who may not fully understand: Businesses involved in what is called interstate commerce, cannot discriminate via otherwise protected speech (which includes actions) without the possibility of being sued. That's why lunch counters can no longer refuse to serve black people. The Supreme Court interpreted the first amendment in this way. There seems to be a bit of picking and choosing about the rules. Some seem to suggest that as an alternative to watching the show people can turn it off, however their are failing to see that it is in fact the same as Lowes pulling the advertisements during this program.

In short, Lowes had every right to pull the advertisements. For one, the advertisement is property which they own – television is simply the medium through which they are delivering it. Second, they clearly stated that it was because they preferred to allow local communities to form their own opinion. This to me is nothing more than people bending the situation to meet their personal or political agenda.

And no, I don't think this show is trying to hide anything. I think the creators are in fact trying to do the opposite – a little understanding and compassion could be a good course here – something I seem to think that people of all faiths could embrace.

    Recent achievements by Muslims –

    * Saudi Arabia put a 60 year old lady to death for "sorcery and witchcraft"
    * Several young girls who had been sold into marriage in various Islamic countries were put to death or are sentenced to death for "adultery" after being raped while their rapists have usually gone free
    * Young girls in Afghanistan have had acid thrown on their faces for having the nerve to go to school
    * Young women killed in the name of "family honor" by their own relatives in often horrifying fashion because the girls committed the sin of falling in love and seeing the boy they were in love with

These and other horrors are what those defending Islam are defending. It is the great evil of our time. Americans better wake up to what the likes of those in "All American Muslims" are trying to put a nice face on. What they represent is pure evil that would enslave the bulk of humanity and keep us in the stone age.

Advertising is a regulated free speech. There are stipulations around the free speech when money is involved. The Senator has no rights or grounds for threatening Lowes with Legislative action. An advertising budget is just that a budget geared towards promoting your company, your image, your ideals and your products. It is used to advertise or broadcast your message to you're demographic. From the statement Lowes released, they simply said after listening and observing, they didn't want any part of the discussion. Its actually a very sound decision on their part. Heated debate on powder keg topics such as Muslim life and Muslim indoctrination while on the pro side of the discussion aids in promoting a cleaner image of the muslim life style, should sentiments shift, has great potential for ostercizing established customers. In this situation, Lowes was gonna take a hit to its reputation regardless. If they stayed they might be viewed as anti christian or anti american, but they decided to step back from the table and now they take a hit as being anti muslim. Anti this or anti that. More of their customers are American than Muslim so stepping back was the safest action for them to take. I personally find the whole debate and ordeal sophmoric. If we can put Jersey Shore on television in all its short bus content, watching muslims living on television seems about on par with most reality based television. It won't be an actual depiction of the Muslim lifestyle and I have over a hundred channels on my satellite and I watch fifteen of them. Its not like its x factor. Leave the advertising in place or pull it, its about money and which decision puts the most in a businesses pocket. If you don't like it, start your own business and make you're own decisions. A small business teeters constantly on the edge of failure. A mid size business is fairly stable and can maneuver quite easily. Large corps like Lowes. A wrong decision can sink the ship fairly easily. Let them put their money where they see fit. If they made their decision based on some biggoted reasoning, its not financially sound and decisions like that will ultimately sink em. If it was a financial decision, then I support. Religion, politics, and emotion have no place in corporate decision making. Number one priority for those who run the company is to the stock holders. Nuff said.

Moderate islam does not exist, the show itself is complete BS.
Muslims cannot choose one part of Islam to follow and not the rest. Don't be idiots, these people don't care for freedom or America, they are here to take and oppress like they do in the middle east. Robert Spencer is a great scholar in this field, I am slowly learning the evils of this "cult" of murdering children, kidnapping, forcing to convert to islam or die, paying the non-muslim tax, raids against copts and the general killing of innocent people in the middle east that belong to a different faith.

Good for you Lowe's my household and family have all sent emails , a total of approx 59 emails were sent to urge all advertisers to stop supporting this show. It is foremost a disgrace to our national colors and our countries name to put the symbol ofthe evil empire of Islam in the word America to replace the "c" in the word. Islam is the reason that humanity cannot achieve a peaceful civilized harmony! There may be a few Islamists that are not violent but there are a few hundred million Islamic believers that want to see all Americans converted to Islam and sharia law or otherwise be dead. This religion teaches that if you are not Islamic then you are an infidel and the infidel is considered to be the evil to Islamic believers. No other religion has a few hundred followers that want to extirminated entire countries like islamics want to extirminated Americans and Jews. You are free to practice your religion in America but that is to be done within your home of place of worship. This is a Christian country with our own state and local law and we do not need anything more. Islamics are trying to have sharia law accepted in the American judicial system and the request is obsurd. These Muslims and their idiotic belief system is a religion of oppression, murder, violence, intolerance of other religions, self ritiousness, oppression of woman and children to the point that an islamic woman raped by an Islamic man will be persecuted and sentenced to prison then forced to marry her assaulter. It teaches that the rape of children is tolerated with only few instances of very minimal punishment to the one committing the act, it teaches such things as woman being stoned to death for wanting to leave her violently abusive spouse, it encourages extremely violent acts of terror indiscriminate of civilians, woman and children, it teaches to lie and deceive all non Islamic persons inthe name of Islam, it teaches that all non Islamic places of worship should be burned and distroyed inthe name of Islam, it's teachings are nothing less then intollerence of all others and the disability of civilization and abolishment of the civilized world.

Where is Obama as Christians in Nigeria are getting killed by Muslims, Christians and animists in the Sudan are getting killed by Muslims, Christians in Egypt are getting killed by Muslims, and more? It's open season on Christians by Muslims, yet we are having this view enforced that Muslims are just super folks, and anyone who doesn't agree will be MADE to by liberals, celebrities, and elected Democrats.

See the hypocrisy? I won't have my belief system forced upon my by a Muslim or a Democrat. Help the Copts, or you won't be in office. Got it?

@Korrine Smith - Wow. Do you think you could be any less tolerant of others and a little more racist? The decision Lowe's made to pull their ads was at the demand of a large majority of their customers who spend BILLIONS and help to keep Lowe's employees employed. Apparently, NASCAR fans aren't anywhere near as ignorant as you are since you seem to have forgotten that Lowe's ORIGINALLY purchased ad space and air time on All American Muslim.

I find it offensive that California Sen. Ted Lieu (D) is pig-sticking Lowe's and calling for a boycott of the company. He is a public official and needs to do his job as such. He has no right to "punish" Lowe's for make a business decision. By pulling their ads, Lowe's was answering the call of Americans who protested. There was nothing racist or discriminatory about the decision Lowe's made. Their customers asked them to stop doing something, so they stopped doing it. By not advertising, Lowe's isn't causing anyone at TLC to lose their jobs. But, by calling for a boycott, the senator may cause Lowe's employees to lose their jobs. Stay out of private business, Senator. Lowe's broke no laws, violated nothing, and still sells tools to Muslims across the country. Senator Lieu ~ you, sir, are a moron. Lowes was not bigoted when they made the decision to Advertise with them were they? They could of choose not to advertise with the show at all. The fact that they did show support. The fact that they are pulling it simply shows that they were not getting the return they expected on the investment, and moved advertising dollars somewhere else. I run a small business, and advertising is very hit or miss. If it works, great, if not, try something else. Sometimes what worked this year won't next year. Its always a shuffling game.

SInce over 18,000 murders have been committed in the name of Islam SINCE 9/11, we have a clear picture of how the modern day Nazi killers are. When will people admit that violent Islam is real, and violent Islam has declared war on the West, not vice versa? See the website religion of peace dot org for a complete list of the killings since 9/11 in the name of Islam all over the world. Who are the Nazis, again?

Muslims don't need to be protected from us. They have more freedom here in the US than they do at home. We have to be vigilant and honest about what Islam in the US means - what does the imposition of sharia law mean in the US for family law and women's rights? What does the limitation of freedom of speech mean when you can't publish something as benign as a cartoon in the United States?

Nazism is a close relative of a political-legal ideology that removes and degrades secular, universal human rights.

My problem with the show is that it seemed to never bring up any of the obvious headlining news about problems in Islam in the US or abroad, in the home countries of origin of the participants.

It felt false, like a fictionalized version of the real Islam. While CNN reports beheadings, stonings, forced marriages of rapists, blowing up girls' schools, killing old women deemed as practicing "sorcery," or the killing of Christians, Buddhists, Siks, Hindus, and other Muslims of other sects by the Islam that has taken over much of the Islamic world, TLC included on mention of this, as though the madness of Islam is something imagined by cable TV news.

I for one won't let Islam get away with avoiding talking about its tough issues. Hold Muslims accountable to the truth and the reality of their imposed beliefs here and around the world.

You do realize that Muslims are killing Christians in Egypt, which was one of the reasons this whole boycott got started? The Coptic Christians of Egypt are under attack, and are being driven out of Egypt by the new Muslim Brotherhood that Obama claims is the light and the hope of a democratic Egypt.

Meanwhile, the Brotherhood has a completely different storyline - they are ambivalent about secular democracy and religious tolerance at best. Where the group will fall probably depends on exterior forces like the economy. Many Coptic Christians are fleeing right now.

I've watched every episode of this show. But, after last night's episode I don't think I'll watch anymore. I'm disgusted that the poor white guy who converted to Islam to marry his Muslim girlfriend had to get rid of his dog because she claimed she had allergies but it was clear that she felt the dog was against Muslim law. This poor guy has no backbone whatsoever and he's pushed around by his overbearing wife. It's his own fault, but it made me so angry. And I completely disapprove of making 8 year old girls wear the hijab. It's just over the top and cult like. If anything, this series is pushing me MORE away from Muslims.

I'm surprised the show put this up, because it seemed to really avoid some of the more troubling aspects of sharia law, even as practiced by "modern" Muslims in the US, who seem to never had too much of a critical word to say about it, but for a handful of brave critics.

The TLC program is a silly portrayal of how many on the Left wish Islam to be. The reality is that Islam is just not there yet. These are not real Muslims according to the clerics of Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, or Pakistan. These people are not practicing Islam as written in the Koran. I urge people to get a Koran and read it. Read the 2nd half of it.

Make up your own mind. Can a book that demands that nonbelievers be killed if they don't covert, that calls Jews "apes and pigs," that demands that Islam be the one true religion and none other, and that law only be a 7th century legal system really comprise a true religion? This is the reality today in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Egypt, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and other Muslim ruled Islamic nations. It's fine to say there are things in the Bible as well, yet we do not call this our law, and carry it out today. The West had Martin Luther, the Enlightenment, even Jesus who changed the law.

A woman was just executed in Saudi Arabia for "sorcery." Sorcery is one of the forbidden things in Islamic law, or sharia. If you were to do chiropractic or yoga, or to use herbs or meditation for healing or health, that could conceivably get you killed in an Islamic nation for practicing something haram, or forbidden, as sorcery. You would only have to be accused by someone who didn't like you taking away business from the halal, or permitted, businesses. Islam permits a something like the Salem Witch Trials.

I don't think people know a thing about Islam or any Islamic nation, but if you took the time to read the Koran, live in these places, or read the news about these countries, you'd find that there is a push now not to modernize Islam, but to take it further backwards, all the way to the beginning, and to live strictly according to those laws from the time of the 7th century, including use of slavery, enforced beliefs, no democracy, no human rights, girl child marriages of adult men, female genital mutilation, legal rape, legal abuse of spouses, and a host of other bizarre and nondemocratic laws. Many such provisions are already legal and followed. In Afghanistan, a women was compelled to marry her rapist to be let out of jail for reporting the rape. Was this in a TLC episode? No?

If you can't put two and two together, then the TLC program is fine. If you know something about Islam, then the TLC program is a fictionalized account of an Islam that should exist but doesn't.

Philly, that's like saying Christians condone rape and murder, because of certain passages in the Bible. Even genocide. Slavery. Getting a wife by raping a virgin. "If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her." Deut. 22:28-29. "If within the city a man comes upon a maiden who is betrothed, and has relations with her, you shall bring them both out of the gate of the city and there stone them to death: the girl because she did not cry out for help though she was in the city, and the man because he violated his neighbors wife." – Deut. 22:23-24... Need more? These old religions all have their nastiness. It's up to modern people to interpret it for themselves, which many Muslims do. Just like Christians. Do you see "good Christians" going around and killing witches, or beating children with sticks? No? Me, neither. As humans, we are capable of discernment, Christian and Muslim alike.

Thayer, I just spent the weekend studying up on how the US military handles rapes of servicemen and women in its ranks. You don't want to be raped ANYWHERE but if you're raped in an Islamic nation you have a better chance of justice than in the US military. 92% of the victims who report rape in the US military are discharged. That's right. The victims get kicked out. The rapists do not. Do some research before you spew opinion. Rape sucks everywhere, in the US just as much (or more) than in other places.

      December 12, 2011 at 3:37 pm | Report abuse |
    • PhillyRN

This is to Jane - but did the rape victims have to marry their attacker to get out of jail? Face it – you have a chance of having a rape committed in the US military prosecuted, but it will be a tough road.

In a fully Islamic, Sharia nation, you are not raped, because as many Muslim clerics have stated, rape really does not exist. There are only virtuous women, and those who are infidels. You need five witnesses to prove your rape, who must be male, or you will be charged with adultery for reporting it.

Come on people. Why are you defending this horrendous legal system as a religion? It is not a religion in the sense that it is entered into freely, where members have the protection of their universal, secular human rights. No such system can be a religion. It's intolerant to tolerate it.

Criticizing a religion does not make you a racist. Muslims are many different races. What people are criticizing is the two-faced quality of many Muslims who demand every concession no matter how small on religion, yet defend their own treatment of those of OTHER faiths.

Coptic Christians in Egypt now are being killed. These are the world's most ancient and original Christians, from the time of the Apostles. These Christians have a right to live in Egypt without persecution, but the Islamic political groups in Egypt now are seeking to wipe Coptic Christians out.

I could list dozens of examples of extreme religious intolerance to the point of death today, in modern Muslim nations, some who call the US their ally. We simply can't whitewash this truth.

Tolerance of bigotry makes that person who claims tolerance a bigot. By ignoring this violence by Muslims you are defending and protecting it. That is wrong.

I'm certain this show will not include a mention of the honor killings that have already occurred in the name of Islam in Dearborn or elsewhere, or the show participants' reaction. Nor will it mention that an elderly woman in modern Saudi Arabia was pronounced under Islamic law to be a witch and murdered this week. Nor will it cover that women can't drive in Saudi Arabia or vote. The new Salafists in Egypt who just won in the election are calling for similar restrictions on women driving, and on secular democracy, which is called incompatible with Islam because Islam is a whole and perfect legal system unto itself.

While this may not be how these people feel, but the standards of these nations, these people in the TLC show are not Muslims. They are apostates. This is not my opinion. This is the reality of Islam in much of the Islamic world today.

Sharia law where it is the rule of law presides over governments that are some of the greatest violators of basic human rights, and Muslims the world over, including in the US, are demanding the expansion of Sharia law. This is not my opinion. This is daily covered in the news.

From female genital mutilation (were these ladies subjected to it in their home countries? Do they believe in it?), to honor killings, to child bride marriages to adult men, legal in Saudi Arabia, to the legal status of abuse and rape of women, these are topics never touched on the TLC program, as though someone imagined these realities for millions of Muslims.

What I don't care for is such a fictionalized account of real Islam as it is practiced now by millions of people who swear they live the true faith.

Islam declared war on the West, not vice-versa. It is kind but blind to pretend otherwise. No one wishes to deprives Muslims of their rights in the US, but to assure them of their rights in their own nations of origin, even if they don't want them.

Exactly. The point of the show is to take a first step (nobody said it was a perfect portrayal) into letting the non-Muslim public learn about our fellow Muslim Americans. I've worked and lived amongst many of them and none of them are extremist or cater to any extremist ideology, they love this country as much as the rest of us. I don't think I deserve to be called a "comunist" or be told I need to go live in the Middle East just because I speak the truth of the mayority of Muslim-Americans who live and have been living here for ever and are the same like the rest of us who belong to other faiths.

No one is saying these are not adorable families. What the original complaint stems from is that the whole show is so devoid of a single headline about real Islam in practice by Muslims in the world today, so the show is a highly sanitized version of an Islam which appears not to exist. This is not my opinion of Islam. These are the headlines on CNN. Muslims kill fill in the blank.

These folks are not "good" Muslims by most Islamic standards in the world. A Muslim group even issued a statement as such. This is to the credit of these families.

While the suffering of millions occurs at the hand of Islamic extremists in acts that are not rare, we have a duty to make sure that we are not glossing over it, much as the media did during the Holocaust. Why did no journalist ever think to ask "where ARE all those trains going?"

Coptic Christians are getting killed in Egypt by Muslims. Nigerian Christians are being attacked by Muslims. Americans are getting killed by Muslims, such as Nidal Hassan. Then there are all of the other religions whose members are being attacked and killed today, now, by Muslims, from Hindus, to Buddhists, to Siks, to Animists, to Ba'hai, to Sufi Muslims, and other Muslims, who go after each other. The Shia kill the Sunni Muslims. The Sunni Muslims kill the Shia.

After a while, you want the killing to stop. For the killing to stop, we have to face it. That means we don't need a kind of Brady Bunch of Muslims. We need honesty and integrity. We need to ask tough questions, and get answers, and show that on TV.

Why are Muslims doing so much killing, and why is this so taboo to face?

No one should have the power to force a business to advertise or not to advertise. Lowes signed a contract to advertise for this particular show and reneged because a small group of extremists threatened them. It's those extremists who are deciding where Lowes should advertise.

We ALL have the right to free speech. You do, I do, Lowe's does. That does NOT mean we can't express our opinion about their cowardice to cave in to threats (also free speech) made by the radical extremist Christians. If Lowes feels like they simply can't advertise for an American reality television show, that is up to them. If radical extremists feel like they have to condemn any business for their advertising on shows the extremists don't like, that is up to them. If normal Americans feel they don't have to shop at Lowes to express their opinion of the reneging of a contract, that is up to us. We ALL have the right to free speech and we are ALL using it.

"This can't happen in America, [Lowe's] needs to fix this immediately...There are American principles at stake here," Simmons told Entertainment Weekly. "This country is built on religious freedom. This is the kind of hate that tears the country apart."

You are correct American PRINCIPLES are at stake... but the first statement you make shows that you really don't care about these PRINCIPLES. LOWES doesn't NEED to fix anything and this CAN happen in America thanks to other PRINCIPLES besides freedom of religion....LIKE FREEDOM OF SPEECH

ALSO stop calling it racism....Islam is a religion not a race... this has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with the fact that Islam, even in its least radical form is oppressive in SO many ways. It may be the norm in the middle east, but Islam would take away FAR more freedoms of Americans than what Lowes has chosen to do. When Islamic countries start treating their people, especially their women better, then I will start accepting it as a worthwhile religion for the U.S. Until then I cannot, personally, see any reason to watch or support a show that follows this culture.Luckily it is America and THEY DO HAVE THE RIGHT TO AIR THE SHOW...The same can't be said for anything other than Islam in any middle eastern country...

As I posted below, businesses involved in what is called interstate commerce, cannot discriminate via otherwise protected speech (which includes actions) without the possibility of being sued. That's why lunch counters can no longer refuse to serve black people. The Supreme Court interpreted the first amendment in this way. Refusing to place ads in a slot merely because it portrays Muslims, is discrimination. They can be sued for it.

Those of you who support Lowes Ad removal are part of the freaking problem in the US. Instead of supporting a company attempting to do the right thing...you support them only when they discriminate. There is an interesting bit of controversy here. We have a fight between Freedom of Religion(and by proxy, Freedom of Speech) versus a Religion which inherently represses freedom of speech in the majority of it's followers. Now, stop before you flame me here: I'm not one of those bigoted Anti Muslim christians or anything like that. This is just from a simple anthropological observation of the culture as a hole. I DO violate one of the primary directives of anthropology by making this observation, but the observation is important to analyze the social issues here.
This religion puts women in a little box and tells them they can't come out. and Many are simply happy with it, having known nothing else, or are insecure enough to not know there is better out there for them. I saw a poster at my local university saying that the wearing of a full shawl to conceal their face is a proud right and choice of female members of the muslim faith and that it's not forced upon them: But really do you have a choice if you are born into the religion and/or fully indoctrinated by one means or the other?

I mean come on, this is the religion where a father KILLED his daughter because she was enjoying all the freedoms a modern American teenager has. Right here, in the Heart of the USA.

I am a home builder. I knew about there sponsorship and I took Lowe's off of my supplier list! Maybe now I'll put them back on. I'm sick of Islam being forced upon the American people but if you even mention Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism or Hindi you're attacked by all of the liberals and minority groups who are completely ignorant of world religions, politics and domestic and foreign policy. Our struggle with Islam is thousands of years old and it is their belief that they are supposed to kill ALL non-Muslims for being infidels.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from criticism. Lowe's has the right to advertise where and when they wish. I have the right to criticize them and stop shopping there. It's a two-way street!

      John:
It's clear that you are confused on the definition of what a Liberal is. What you described, INCLUDING the part about being ignorant to world politics and cultures, pretty much describes CONSERVATIVE.

For instance, did you know there are THREE cultures of people in Iraq who all Hate each other? And that for the Iraq war all we did is dispose of one Genocidal Dictator and put another in his place?

Lowe's has a right to deal with the responses to their ad, too.

I'd be less likely to shop at Lowes if they were to capitulate and run the ads. How can those who say pulling the ads is unamerica justify taking away Lowes right of free speech?

Simple Simmons needs to shut his trap. From where does he assume the right to tell a company where and how to spend their advertising dollars? In his world I guess he and his artist and GLBT friends should decide what causes, businesses, enterprises must be supported. Maybe Lowes can just tell it wont be around very long due to its ignorant premise and low ratings – do the liberals that condemn Lowes even watch?

GOOD FOR LOWE'S and SHAME ON TLC!!! TLC has all the crap shows. Don't push these people on me/public and try to justify their lifestyle/religion. There is no way I would ever trust any Muslim after 9/11.

Nah, that's offensive. A cross or a Christmas tree? HECK NO!! But Alllah-Forbid that Lowe's should want to pull their advertising from a show that has to deal with Islam. Where are we going and why are we in this handbasket?

In Norway a *Christian Crusader* murdered 89 innocent people because of Islamophobia. All you guys are doing is encouraging these Christian Crusaders to continue killing – there ate 1.5 Billion Muslims in the World – are you going to have a Billion Muslim Holocaust ??

"They should not have to apologize for their actions – it is not a free country?"

No one should have to apologize for anything they do then. All they have to do is say its a free country. Your analytical skills are very poor. BTW, since its a free country, we get to criticize them.

Lowe's certainly has the right to advertise with whom they want. The fact that they initially advertised with this program suggest that they did not have an issue. For them to pull their ads based on some conceived threat by a group who is promoting their own agenda is wrong. As a business it is their decision to make. As a American consumer it is my decision to not do business with them.

Lowe"s doesn't have to apologize and I don't have to shop there. They have a choice and so do I.

Thank you Jennifer for that comment! I agree wholeheartedly. What is wrong with this country when we have to defend every little thing we do or say.

The morons who defend Lowe's right to advertise where they want miss the point....probably on purpose. Of course, they can advertise where they want...duh. But that's not what happened. They DID advertise where they wanted to and were then bullied/coerced into withdrawing that advertising by a right-wing-nut group. When we have to worry that we cannot do what we want or believe in because some obscure group will try to bully us, then there is no hope for this country.
