Melissa McCarthy: The new face of Ivory soap

In addition to the long list of other jobs Melissa McCarthy has lined up right now, she's adding one more: brand spokesperson for Ivory soap,  according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The Emmy-winning "Mike & Molly" star's iron is hot right now, and in addition to being the face of the cleansing product, she'll also host "Soap Dish," a new “online social community” on Facebook. On “Soap Dish,” the comedian will tackle topics such as marriage and motherhood.

"I grew up using Ivory, and that smell always reminds me of when I was a kid," McCarthy, 41, says of the brand. "As a working mom of two, I love anything that simplifies my life. So when one bar of soap can handle backyard dirt, spaghetti hands and the unidentified crusty bits under my girls' necks, I'm in."

Last month, Ivory started a "holistic reinvention," which involves new packaging and advertising, along with McCarthy’s appointment.

Ivory brand manager Jay Sethi comments on their new soap spokesperson: "Melissa's humor, simple charm and down-to-earth attitude fit with every bit of Ivory’s persona. More than refreshingly honest and sincere, she is every woman and a modern mom, and we think our fans will absolutely love her."

She's corpulently obese and it's disgusting and a conscious decision to be a lard@ss. 98% of the fat people are fat by choice through the lifestyle decisions they make to eat lousy food and lots of it and not engage in any physical activity. They're offensive and it's unnecessary. I have no sympathy for them, whatsoever. Her only talent is shoveling copious amounts of food in her face. Looking at her makes my eyes bleed and says a lot about the target demographic of her show: Fat, angry cat ladies who couldn't get/keep a man if their very lives depended on it.

Ivory soap does a great job of cleaning schmeg from between layers of fat. That should work out well for her.

She is a beautiful, funny and talented actress. I'm not surprised Ivory soap has selected her to represent their products. The recent Dove campaigns have been broadening the exposure of women of all shapes, sizes and ages. Gee. Just like our world is comprised of...I don't care if someone is a size 0 or 30 or anywhere in between. Everyone is a human being and deserves my respect until they prove otherwise. (Some of you folks need a zipper on your mouths or a self-assessment of "why do I hate so much?).

I remember Ivory Soap from my childhood as well. Now I think it's a little harsh for my skin.

My mom 75 and is a little over 200lbs. She has no medical issues (no diabetes, no high blood pressure etc), has beautiful complextion (very few wrinkles, no plastic surgery), eats a super healthy organic diet and is very active. She has hypothyrodism (which she manages the best she can), but struggles to lose weight, but does her best to be as healthy as possible. I see very few 75 year old ladies as cute as her.

Melissa McCarthy is gorgeous, funny, talented, and a working mom. Jennifer Aniston is thin, but is a smoker. Kate Moss is a supermodel, but a druggie. Amy Winehouse was thin, but died of alcohol poisoning. Thin makes you far from perfect or a role model.

More power to her for not letting the Hollywood "perfect image" get in her way of making a killer career. She may not be in shape but I'm sure she has better health care than any of us.

Please stop glorifying morbidly obese people. She's 99 44/100 ths pure fat! She's a great example of how not to live.

    • Really?

@ MaryinPA – "stop glorifying morbidly obese people?" Should we also stop glorifying the size 0 models who are anorexic? Pretty sure that those on THAT side of Hollywood have just as many issues and also prove themselves as great examples of "how not to live." Believe it or not, it is possible to be obese while maintaining a health-conscious lifestyle. Not everyone who is "fat" is doomed to diabetes and early death. Hope you exemplify the healthy lifestyle you are touting.

I love Melissa, been a fan of hers since Gilmore Girls and Samantha Who. She's had a great year, with Bridesmaids, an Emmy win, and a great turn hosting SNL. She's a genuinely funny and talented woman, and I'm happy for all her success. I think it's great that she's gotten an ad campaign as well.

She really has a beautiful face. And she is very funny on her show. Good for her. And I also like the smell of Ivory soap. But she really needs to lose weight or she'll end up dead at 44 like Heavy D.

Didn't Mike and Molly meet at Overaters Anonymous? Wasn't Mike recently counting Weight Watcher's points while having lunch with Carl? How are those programs working out for them? Love them, love the show, but let's get real. They obviously are not trying to get in shape.

I am happy that Ivory is choosing an averge sized person to be their spokesperson. She is so funny. She also seems like she would be very down to earth. I like her.

Average sized? Since when is obese average sized? Oh thats right, it became average in the minds of obese people when 30% of America became obese. Please, if Ivory or any other company wants to use an obese person to market their products in order to attract more obese Americans to purchasing their products, thats fine. But don't call an obese person average sized, the 70% of us that are not obese would like to continue to know that we are actually average sized... along with the rest of the world.

i think mccarthy is hilarious. i loved her in bridesmaids. that being said, i don't think we as a society should just accept morbid obesity as okay if you like yourself. i think she's beautiful, but it is a health issue that shouldn't be ignored.
