Ashton Kutcher apologizes for Paterno tweet

Prolific Twitter user Ashton Kutcher is taking a break from the social media site after he posted a response to the firing of Penn State's coach Joe Paterno without knowing the full story.

According to People magazine, the 33-year-old "Two and a Half Men" actor tweeted on Wednesday night, "How do you fire Jo Pa? #insult #noclass as a hawkeye fan I find it in poor taste."

Both Paterno and the president of Penn State have been let go in the wake of an alleged child sex abuse scandal.

Allegations of child rape have been brought against the school's former defensive coordinator, Jerry Sandusky, and critics have called for Paterno to resign because he reported the allegations to superiors, but not police. On Wednesday, the school's board of trustees ousted Paterno, saying that it was "necessary to make changes" because of "the difficulties that have engulfed our university."

As the news of Paterno's dismissal was unfolding on Wednesday evening, Kutcher followed up on his initial critical tweet.

"Heard Joe was fired, fully recant previous tweet!" he reportedly wrote to his 8.2 million followers. "Didn't have full story." The initial tweet and Kutcher's admission of tweeting prior to knowing all of the details surrounding the Paterno firing have since been deleted from his account.

Instead, Kutcher has announced that he's taking a Twitter sabbatical. "As an advocate in the fight against child sexual exploitation, I could not be more remorseful for all involved in the Penn St. case," he wrote early Thursday. "As of immediately I will stop tweeting until I find a way to properly manage this feed. I feel awful about this error. Won't happen again."

Update, 1:50 p.m. ET:  In a statement on Posterous, Kutcher explains that while he will still express himself via his Twitter account, it will be managed by his team at Katalyst Media "to ensure the quality of [its] content."

Kutcher recalls that he first heard of the story after returning from work, and made an assumption that Paterno was fired because of his performance as a coach.

"With that assumption (how dare I assume) I posted a tweet defending his career," the actor says in the statement. "I then [went] about my evening...and about an hour later turned on ESPN where I got the full story. I quickly went back on my twitter account and found a hailstorm of responses calling me an 'idiot' and several other expletives."

At that point, Kutcher "retracted and deleted" the tweet, but says "that didn't seem enough to satisfy people's outrage at my misinformed post. I truly am sorry if I offended anyone and more over am going to take action to ensure that it doesn't happen again."

He adds that he doesn't take his 8 million plus followers for granted, and since "Twitter has grown into a mass publishing platform, where one's tweets quickly become news that is broadcasted around the world and misinformation becomes volatile fodder for critics," he feels "responsible for delivering an informed opinion, and not spreading gossip or rumors through my Twitter feed."

With the help of his management team, Kutcher believes this is "a mistake that I don't think will happen again."

This is what happens when a generation of young people prefer getting their "news" from social networking websites and TMZ-like gossip shows rather than actually reading or watching a news program that lasts more than two minutes. Had he seen any of the countless news stories leading up to the firing, he would've known what was going on.

At least he was willing to admit he posted without knowing the whole story. Wish all the losers that just want to tear down JoePa and Penn State would wait until the knew the whole story before they start tearing down a man that spent most of his life not only as a coach, but as someone that tried to make sure his players also got an education.

Everybody loves to tear down a hero at the slightest opportunity.

Maybe it's time to stop spewing forth our immediate reactions to everything before we get all of the facts straight. Instant messaging, facebook, and all the other ways we find to contact each other every second of the day are fine compliments to our daily lives and communication, but this just highlights our need to think carefully before we respond to anything and everything. Think First!

Are you people just illiterate too? SANDUSKY WAS NOT UNDER COACH PATERNO WHEN THIS HAPPENED. HE WAS RETIRED FROM COACHING. THESE EVENTS DID NOT, LET ME REPEAT, DID NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT HAPPEN WHILE JOE WAS HIS BOSSS. He only had keys to buildings on campus as part of his retirement package and having emeritus status. These boys were NOT associated with Penn State. They were special needs students from a local school district in a program called THE SECOND MILE that Sandusky had made. If Sandusky hadn't brought the kids on campus to do the acts, NONE of this would have had anything to do with Penn State other than Sandusky being a retired coach from there. Furthermore you stupid idiots, Joe was only notified ONCE by the idiot McQueary who was 28 years old and should have gone to the police AND stopped what was going on to begin with. And YET MCQUEARY IS STILL COACHING SATURDAY. Frankly, I hope someone shoots him! Why is THE PERVERTED CREEP SANDUSKY NOT GETTING BLAMED BUT JOE IS? So many people with opinions on things that they don't even have FACTS ON!!!! For God's sake read the indictment people before running your mouths!!!!!! HOLY HELL!!!!!!!!! Some people are just plain IGNORANT.

The dumbest thing he did was recant his original post. Joe did exactly what he was supposed to do. The real people to blame are the administration and the grad student. Joe didn't witness anything, but only received a second hand report. It was the grad student, as the witness, who bore the responsibility to inform the police, not Joe. All he could/should have done is report it and encourage the witness to make a statement to the police. Period. Asking anything else of Joe is just plain stupid. Police don't go off second hand information, so why on Earth should Joe be responsible?

In many "real" ways, Joe Paterno IS Penn State. He should have followed up and instantaneously taken the key away from Sandusky when he heard the report. No one followed up. No one was interested enough to see that the facts were found. Everyone who was aware this was happening shirked their responsibility and should be culpable. An invaluable lesson can be learned from this situation. It's a shame Paterno had to go out this way, but it was a fair firing. More firings need to be in the offing. No one did what was necessary in this situation. It's appalling.

Keep your inappropriate comments to yourself, go save your wedlock with your crypt keeper wife, stop boring the general public with your terrible acting, and get a clue on how to respond to an obviously horrible situation. I don't know a lot about Ashton Kutcher, but he said he he said he responded before knowing the facts behind Joe Paterno's firing. I see that a lot of people are fond on Joe Paterno and proud of his record at Penn State, and they are angry over his firing. In this particular situation, a lot of people are reacting emotionally – not rationally. I also think that the fact that we live in an "instant" age has bread a culture of "Shoot. Aim. Ready." – we tend to react immediately, before the facts are checked and verified. Sometimes it is not a good thing.

Kutcher is not an idiot for supporting Paterno. He is an idiot for tweeting every thought in his head to the whole world. It is childish, as evidenced by this incident. When young children say things without a filter we call it cute. They are young and innocent. When a supposed adult acts like that, it is immature and childish. An adult measures his or her words.

I'm so tired of people who claim that "they would have called the police" take such a moral high ground against anyone who even remotely tries to support Paterno. People make mistakes, as did Kutcher. Doesn't mean they're suppose to be burned at the stake. Both have admitted as such so it's time for the rest of us to move on – unless of course you need psychiatric help to to that.

Probably was not the smartest thing to tweet a response to a controversial issue without knowing the whole story, but to be canned and managed for expressing an opinion that many people who do know the facts still hold anyway is plain stupid. He is just an actor, not a figure of authority for anybody, except maybe his female teenage fans.

Actually, the more I learn about Kutcher, the better I like him. Contrary to what other posters have said, he is extremely intelligent. You can not judge the character of an actor by the characters he portrays. Not one of us is infallible, famous or otherwise. At least Kutcher had the moral character to admit he made a mistake and take the necessary precautions to prevent the same in the future.

All he to do was alert others and/or investigate to find out the truth. He did neither, so he was fired, as was the president, because he is the president. with leadership positions, there is accountability. Joe Paterno is the head of the Penn State football program and this happened under his watch. This was not a one-time recent incident but a case of a pedophile that used his position in Paterno's program to abuse young boys over the course of several years. The university overlooked it because the football program is successful. And that's what makes it worse. Paterno deserved to be fired even if he didn't know of the allegations because when you're the man in charge you need to know what's going on.

THESE EVENTS DID NOT, LET ME REPEAT, DID NOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT HAPPEN WHILE JOE WAS HIS BOSSS. Furthermore you stupid idiot, Joe was only notified ONCE by the idiot McQueary who was 28 years old and should have gone to the police AND stopped what was going on to begin with. And YET MCQUEARY IS STILL COACHING SATURDAY. Frankly, I hope someone shoots him! Why is THE PERVERTED CREEP SANDUSKY NOT GETTING BLAMED BUT JOE IS? Maybe Joe is guilty of poor judgement, and failing to do as much as he could have done. But the witch hunt for his head is incredibly unbalanced. McQueary is far more guilty of what you people are laying on Joe, and he is still coaching. Sandusky is the true villain here, and yet I have seen more articles about Joe's failure then anything about Sandusky. The misinformation runs rampant too. There hasn't even been a trial yet, and already everyone thinks they know every fact there is. If Joe purposely silenced this to save his friend, he deserves prison. But until that is proven I can't stand listening to a single one of you morons.

You know what's funny, people who come on message boards to do nothing but critique grammar or point out misspelled words. Spelling a word wrong here and there or not using the best sentence structure appears to be a larger crime than what this Sandusky creep allegedly committed. To all of you who take pride in pointing out the grammatical flaws of others, I laugh at you all. I can guarantee when you are having discussions with your friends, that is if you losers have any, you do not speak in perfect english all the time. Whether you're a college kid, blue collar worker, or an executive, there is no way you speak perfectly at all times. How do you walk in on an old man raping a child and just tell your boss, and go about your daily life, knowing nothing was done about it? Every single person who knew this was going on and did not alert the police might as well have done the raping themselves. I would love to see them go to jail. If your present at a murder and do nothing, your guilty, this is no different. They all should be locked up. Can't wait til all the evil people in this world are destroted in Armaghedon.
