What's the verdict?: 'Allen Gregory'

Fox's new half-hour animated comedy "Allen Gregory" is perfectly titled, because the series star, a beyond-precocious 7-year-old of the same name, is the reason to keep watching.

The series, co-created by and starring actor Jonah Hill, made its debut Sunday ahead of another smart-mouthed kid, "Family Guy's" Stewie Griffin. The basic premise is that Allen Gregory's dad has fallen on hard times and needs his (maybe-straight) life partner Jeremy to get a job instead of home-schooling Allen Gregory.

That means Allen. G (as we'll call him) has to brave the halls of public school, along with his adopted Cambodian sister, Julie (Joy Osmanski).

Hill provides the voice for the fast-talking, snotty, and yet insecure elementary school student, who seems to be channeling his best impersonation of a talent agent. He refuses to call his teacher (voiced by Leslie Mann) anything other than her first name, Gina, and also isn't afraid to call her a "train wreck" under his breath before he bulldozes over whatever argument she offers.

His poor dad Jeremy and sister Julie are also hit with the brunt of his sarcastic wrath, although we see where Allen Gregory gets it from in the premiere - his other dad, Richard, is just as rudely snobbish.

We also got a glimpse of Allen Gregory's fantasy about his 60-something principal, which was a little unnerving to watch, but did offer a laugh. At one point, he asks her the most preposterous question: "Is it just like, a complete mess down there?" To which she responds: "I'm going to level with you - it's like post-Katrina."

Allen Gregory's habit of having sushi with wine for lunch and his haughty sense of self-importance don't make him a member of the popular crowd, and critics are about as charmed by Allen Gregory as most of his fellow students.

USA Today writes that Allen Gregory is a "total irredeemable brat" in an animated program that's "gross, ugly, viscous and stupid," and without enough laughs to matter. The New York Daily News inquired if no one in Allen Gregory's new school knew how to spit in his sushi roll, finding him more annoying than "the trust fund brats on 'Gossip Girl' or '90210.'"

The Washington Post critiques that "Allen Gregory" is "a coy but limp attempt" at adding to Fox's Sunday line-up, and that all one can hope for the title character is that he'll "meet some horrible demise."

But for me, Allen Gregory's awfulness is also part of his charm - especially when you see that his attitude could very well be a cover-up for a desire to be liked. A 7-year-old's sarcasm I can take, but I did find his father, Richard, to be far less funny. There's also the question of whether Allen Gregory's witticisms at adjusting to public school can sustain an entire series, because I'm sure there are only so many times I can laugh at another Gina, Jeremy or Julie put-down.

What about you? Do you think Hill's "Allen Gregory" has potential to stay afloat?

It's my theory that Fox promotes pointless, laugh-free pap like AG and Bob's Burgers in order to make The Cleveland Show appear funny by comparison.

Watched 2.5 episodes and gave up. It is pure garbage; a mean, ugly, vulgar, utterly predictable show full of unpleasant characters in crude, hateful stereotypes. None of which is funny. The opening credits and music sequence are the ONLY good thing in the show, and that ain't anywhere near enough.

You know a show is bad when the ads are very brief references. i just watched a commercial for animation domination, i laughed so hard when i saw this. They described the other shows, but when they got to allen gregory it was just "then after an all new allen gregory" said so fast that if you weren't paying attention you'd miss it. fortunately it looks like this show is only a half season show, on the latest cancel or renew list bob's burgers is supposed to come back mid season. hopefully they become a full season show after this year and they cancel AG. now i'm usually a pretty lax guy when it comes to humor, i can find anything funny. But i couldn't even get through 1 episode of allen gregory it's just pretentious dreck, that really shouldn't have been allowed to be created.

I don't know who J. Hill is and don't care. I do like almost every animation on Fox and Adult swim plus South PArk of course but this was just bad. Just no one to care about and just bad writing. Lets hope this dies a quick death adn is replaced by some unknown animator with a great idea just looking for a chance..and he hires H. Jon Benjamin

Please cancel this show during the next commercial break. I literally walked away from my television in the middle of trying to give this steaming pile a fair shake to get online and find somewhere I could beg to have the airwaves freed from this animation abomination. It's obviously aimed at an older audience, as most of the "humor" would be over a child's head, but that same "humor" is more of an insult to a viewer's (this viewer's anyway) intelligence, than it is comedy. The jokes are predictable and poorly delivered, the entire 21 minutes becoming little more than one long run-on paragraph of bad one-line puns. At least coming online to get that off my chest saved me from another segment. Now I'm off to let my remote save me from the rest.

What really irritates me is that this cartoon is on at 8:30, just in time to make sure that litle ones would get a chance to view. I can only imagine how many parents were not paying attention and let their kids watch this thinking it was just another cartoon. Of course, that was obviously intentional on the part of the network.

And huh, all the bad reviews are really reminding me of Bob's Burger's first reactions. 'crappy animation, vulgar, stopped watching after the first 5 minutes', yadda yadda... I know it took me a few episodes to start liking Bob's Burgers, and judging by most of the comments here it's grown on a lot of us. Who knows, maybe in a few weeks Allen Gregory will be more popular.
Plus you have to take into account that this is just the pilot. Even the American Dad pilot was pretty weak, and that's my absolute favorite of the Sunday lineup.

Fox forgot the funny. I watch the Sunday night animation block to have some laughs before the grind of a new week starts. Allen Gregory was, for me, completely devoid of humor and I stayed with it for the full half hour. None of the characters had an iota of likability. (Fox also seems to have forgotten that if viewers don't like the characters in a show, they won't be inclined to spend time with those characters week after week.) What really threw me, though, was Family Guy's domestic abuse episode. NOT FUNNY. It was, for the most part, grim and depressing. I have heard Seth MacFarlane is tired of doing Family Guy. If so, this was a great first step in killing it off.

There will always be the contarians, hipsters and pseudo-sophisticates who will say this is funny, brilliant and original.

    You are self-deluded.

This was crap. The characters unrelatable...the jokes seemed to be Hollywood insider crap... the premise is stupid... the animation was uninteresting (is that a word?)...

The only thing that was worse than this 30 minutes of agony are the comments of approval from people who don't realize they don't know what is funny.

I love the pretentiousness of the characters and setting, which anyone living in a cultured city could tell you is much more relatable than some white-trash family living in the suburbs. And, since it's apparently an indicator of how intelligent I am, I watched Arrested Development when it was on air, own all three seasons, and am even watching "In God We Trust" as I type this, so yes, I appreciate/recognize comedy. As for other comedies, if you found the Principal scene disgusting, there's no way that you can tolerate South Park; if you think The Simpsons is comedic gold, then surely you must prefer lazy and overt jokes; and if you thought the animation sucked, then I'm sorry for all the trouble you must have with the vast variety of animation styles that have been ruining esteemed animated films for decades.

Seriously, does anyone who doesn't have time to watch 5 hrs of TV a night still watch new (non-Halloween) Simpsons episodes? It fits in perfectly with Fox's other (once) dark comedies. AG is blatant rip-off of old-school Stewie which is why I probably enjoyed it so much. BTW, half of the commentators are illiterate which probably explains the mixed reviews.

I saw nothing compelling in the many many commercials for Allen Gregory that I suffered through (on the contrary, it seemed repellant), and now that its premeired, I haven't heard anything to dissuade me from that judgement. My prediction: hasty cancellation.

treehouse of horror was awesome again – Kang and Kodos always have tomake an appearance

Allen Gregory is a one note show and will end sooner rather than later – different but doesn't really fit with the 2 hour animation block on Fox – feels like more of an adult swim type show (for aquired tastes)

Bob's Burgers I think will be back as the keep trying out mid-season fill ins like Allen Gregory. Burgers is far superior show, far funnier. With any show, while the main characters are important, its usually the supporting characters that allow the show to sink or swim, and Bob's kids are just hilarious at every moment

Some shows need to grow on you though, for example The Cleveland Show. Cleveland was the most annnoying of the four friends on Family Guy but his show is awesome and consistently funny and most of the time funnier than Family Guy (however, i'm still confused why Cleveland's son used to be a hyper skinny kid and is now slow and fat. I must have missed that episode)

Anyway, Archer and South Park crush all the fox shows now in terms of hilarity, but you guys really need to get off the Simpson's sucks bandwagon – sorry, Its great every week, and in re-runs, and on the movie screen. You all must be like 16 years old and don't underatnd cultural capital

This show sucked! I wan't offended by anything in it, but how could I? All of the jokes were lame as hell. I hope Jonah Hill takes the time to read some of these things, so he will know that he failed.

We get it fox you want to keep the creators of the Simpsons and Seth Macfarlane ( the creator of family guy, the Cleveland show, and american dad) on there game by threatening them with a new show on sunday's but this is a complete failure of a show that is obviously driven by a moronic comedy star who obviously lost any talent to make us laugh with his weight loss. This show will go on the monumental pile of shows that fox tried on sunday's and failed.

Please, Please, Please. Allen Gregory is one of those sad shows that should only last a single episode. One and done. After the first episode there is nowhere else to go. About bringing back Bob's Burgers? No! Bob's Burger gave me heart burn with a dash of existential angst. It would be best for Fox to just leave that hour long time slot vacant and not show anything (oh wait, it was only 30 minutes–it just seemed like an hour).

I really did try, I love animation, I love Jonah Hill.

Really? NO ONE in Johan's life cared enough about him to pull him aside and point out how god awful this is? Is that really all that is around him a bunch of yes mean and liars? really? I feel a a pain in my soul that this is what the world has come to.

This was the worst show I've ever seen. Bring back Bob's Burgers! Seriously... during one scene, were they trying to make a hero out of someone who admitted to being straight, leaving his wife and kids, and being seduced by a gay guy? Was this supposed to be brave?

    October 31, 2011 at 12:47 pm | Report abuse |
    • Kat

Brave? Au contraire! Jeremy is a case study of one who loves too well, doomed by his own nature to be with whomever loves(needs) him the most. His genuine desire to be a loving good parent, his true concern for his obnoxious little boy... I think he will be the emotional anchor of this show.

    • Agreed!

I agree completely- I found it hilarious! I loved Allen Gregory and his sister and Jeremy, although I do agree with the writer of the article that his dad's pretentiousness may grow old quickly. But I thought it was fabulous and hope it gets picked up for the full season and many more! It's also animated so much better than Family Guy & Simpsons (which, I will be the first to say, are among two of my favorite shows... I am not putting them down at all, and this show will need work to be as funny as them, but it's on the right track, and the animation is great and crisp!)

This is the best, most clever animated series in a very long time. Everyone is so used to "dumb" television that when they run into something that is genuinely funny they don't see it. The Cleveland Show and Bob's Burgers are nothing compared to Allen Gregory and both get renewed while Allen Gregory gets cancelled. People that say this is disturbing. Watch any other animated series on FOX and you will see that American Dad, Family Guy and Bob's Burgers are all disturbing but IT IS CALLED COMEDY! Of course they don't really support a seven-year-old drinking alcohol at elementary school and wanting a relationship with his 68-year-old principal.

This show does not fit within the Animation Domination of FOX Sunday's. I am sure there is a fan base out there for this show but I am not one of them. If we are looking for an animated filler between the Simpson's and Family Guy I would probably recommend random Animaniacs Reruns rather than this. I am searching for the humor but I am lost. Don't try to help me find it... I have lost interest other than to voice my meager opinion.
