ADL asks Sarandon to apologize for 'Nazi' comment

Susan Sarandon recently called Pope Benedict XVI a "Nazi" not once but twice during a recent interview, and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) is asking the actress to apologize.

In a statement posted on the organization's website, the ADL refers to Sarandon's remark as a "disturbing, deeply offensive and uncalled for attack on the good name of Pope Benedict XVI."

As Newsday reported, the actress was speaking about her 1995 movie “Dead Man Walking” with actor Bob Balaban in an interview at the Hamptons Film Festival on Saturday. Sarandon, 65, mentioned that she sent the pope a copy of the anti-death penalty book the film was based on.

"The last one," she said, indicating Pope John Paul, "not this Nazi one we have now."

Balaban tried to gloss over the comment, but Sarandon said it again!

In response on Monday, the ADL's National Director, Abraham Foxman, said in the posted statement, "We hope that Susan Sarandon will have the good sense to apologize to the Catholic community and all those she may have offended...Ms. Sarandon may have her differences with the Catholic Church, but that is no excuse for throwing around Nazi analogies. Such words are hateful, vindictive and only serve to diminish the true history and meaning of the Holocaust."

If you'll recall, another Hollywood player, Lars von Trier, recently got in trouble for calling himself a Nazi.

Not the Nazi we have now? WE? So she's Catholic? Why does she affiliate herself with an organisation that is run by someone she perceives to be "Hitler-Nasty"? It makes her even more of a hypocrite than she already is.

Sarandon: "I'd have a better feeling about the National Socialist party if it wasn't run by Hitler."

    Go away, already.

Susan Sarandon needs to grow up. Throwing around the word "Nazi" is the tactic of someone who can't come up with any intelligent argument. In doing this, Sarandon is no different from Hank Williams Jr. or any Tea Partiers who call Obama a Nazi simply because it's the word with the most negative connotation. Also, people who call the Pope a Nazi need to stop using the Hitler Youth argument, as membership was mandatory for young Germans and did not require membership in the National Socialist Party.

    Dear Susan,
You're more of a moron that I thought. Serisously...I thought you were just another stupid actor in Hollywood that thinks they have all the answers to solving all the worlds problems b/c people pay to to see a movie you're in. I was wrong. You've become Fox News incarnate in that you will bust out the Nazi card if someone doens't agree with your politics or if that someone, in this case the Pope, happens to be German. Anti-egalitarianism was one trait of the Nazi party....which ironically is the stance you've taken over the years with your politics and now with the Pope just b/c he's German. Hoenstly, I don't think you really understand the words that come out of your mouth. And it shows.

Very telling that CNN buried this story way down its page but Hank Williams, who did not directly call Obama Hitler, got so much attention. To many Americans, especially outside of the liberal leaning metro areas that CNN reports from, the pope is much more revered than the President. This is not minor news. Somebody saying something anti-muslim gets more coverage than this, and how many Muslims are there compared to Catholics in the USA? CNN, get you head out of your ... No wonder fewer people watch CNN – you cater only to lefties like yourselves. Try to step back and see the big picture.

This ranks right up there for sure. here is what really bothers me though... Hank Williams Jr. made a Nazi comment and he was not directly comparing anyone to Hitler and he has been absolutely bashed for it and was removed from ESPN. Now some far-left radical nut case makes a direct comparison of THE POPE to being a Nazi and what do we hear????? It amazes me that people who campaign against "hate speech" are the very ones who will eventually be caught spewing it. Susan Sarandon will not offer a sincere apology, her publicist will. Why do people even bother to listen to what these Hollywood idiots say. Just because they can memorize words and spit them back out does not qualify them to be a spokesperson for the rest of the world. All I can say is I have never realy cared for her as an actor, and definately do not care for the drivel she spouts on her personal views. She may have the first amendment rights to say these things, but I have the right to turn the channel everytime I see her on TV, and I certainly won't waste my money on any of her pathetic movies.

I'm sorry... but sarandon is right. It's not about his past, but about what he stands for now. Anyone who pounces on the rights of others is a nazi... the pope philosophy and hatred towards gay people and women is the same philosophy that the nazi's had... there's no difference. Until he stands for equality for all, he's a nazi, just calls himself the pope. Hatred towards anyone is barbaric. He will protect priests who molest children, but won't let women be priests and stands in the way of equality for gays. The Catholic church won't exist much longer as more and more people distance themselves from such stupid and antiquated ways of thinking.

She was just stating a fact. He admits being a member of the Hitler Youth Group. Her only mistake was failing to realize the previous pope was also a Nazi – young Karol Wojtyla (pope John Paul II) worked for IG Farben as a chemist and as a sales rep when he was a young man. Wikipedia: "Following his 14th birthday in 1941, Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) was conscripted into the Hitler Youth—as membership was required by law for all 14-year-old German boys after December 1939." Whether he liked it or not- the Pope was a member of the Nazi party.

Enough with calling anyone you don't like a Nazi. I usually admire Sarandon's commitment to social justice causes, but this is beyond ridiculous. I think people have started using the term for anyone they don't like, and they do not have any understanding of what it actually means. Using the term Nazi to refer to someone you don't agree with cheapens the suffering of all those persecuted by the real Nazis. She should know better.

While it is true that Ratzinger deserted his Nazi party youth affiliation, that was done at the "twilight" of the War, when it was obvious that Germany was falling. It remains to be seen if he would have been so "stalwart" if Germany were winning the War. Of course we'll never find out.

Nobody asked me (of course), but I still don't think he should have been elected. There were other candidates among the Cardinals who were not subject to such a stain in their history.

In the mean time, he is still shielding Bernard Law from prosecution by allowing him to remain in the Vatican. Others have pointed out that his "history" on hiding some child abusers is not good.

All in all, a lousy selection for the papacy. Most Catholics I know have absolutely REFUSED to give a cent to the church. And they are very vocal about their refusal. Many think it was "too early" for a German Pope.

Of course Dietrich Bonhoeffer was much older than Ratzinger during the War. Bonhoeffer was literally a "saint," in that he went to the gallows just before the end of the War in protest of everything Nazism stood for. Bonhoeffer was NOT catholic. Ratzinger should have Bonhoeffer's biography on his night stand and read it every day for penance.

Bill Clinton was not a bad president, I didn't vote for him and felt his efforts to avoid the draft, though somewhat understandable disqualified him from the position. He was qualified for many other public offices, just not Commander and Chief. I fell the same about the current pope, he may or may not have had good reasons for his youthful association, but it should have disqualified him from being selected for his position as pope. Just as the voters should have bypassed Clinton, the church officials should have done the same. On a different subject, no man should be called Holy Father anyway, only God is holy and to be holy is to be without sin, only Jesus met that standard.

    October 18, 2011 at 7:28 pm | Report abuse |
    • Kathryn

No, Bernie, holy means set apart for God. Even you and I are called to be holy. He is not called that to imply he is perfect or sinless or divine. He is called father because he leads his flock like a shepherd. He is imperfect and he is human just like all earthly fathers.

When someone disagrees with whoever is currently our president (as most of us have at one point or another) I believe it is right and good to still show him the courtesy and respect he is due. The same goes for all world leaders. The guideline for not calling someone a racist name in an argument applies to all people, though, not just world leaders.

All this talk about the Hitler Youth is just a red herring. He did not choose this and did not want to participate. His father was an outspoke critic of the Nazis. He was Pope John Paul II's closest advisor – JPII would never have been so close to someone who had evil intent.

It is what it is. Freedom of speech does not remove the consequence of that speech. She is racist and a hypocrite in her statement and she degrades her argument with this inappropriate comment. It's a shame because healthy discourse would be so much better for our country and our world, especially where human rights and social justice are concerned.

"Everybody" is defending a world leader who should be treated with respect and dignity. The issues are not related. If you want to tie every last thing connected with anyone and anything Catholic to the priests who committed those horrible acts, then I'll answer: I and many others both inside and outside the Catholic Church are working to protect people from abuse every day.

Calling Pope Benedict a Nazi is like calling President Andrew Johnson a Confederate...Johnson may have been a SOUTHERNER but was most assuredly loyal to the Union and not a REBEL. What the heck is the ADL talking about? Her comment wasn't based on the fact that he's the leader of the Catholic Church (that should be obvious since she went out of her way to distinguish between Benedict and John Paul II), it was based on the fact that HE REALLY WAS A NAZI!!!!! I'm sorry if someone finds that truth to be unpleasant, but it's not Sarandon's fault!

Pope Benedict is vile, disgusting man who was a member of the Hitler Youth, something he refuses to answer for. He also KNOWINGLY aided child abusers, then blamed the damage they caused on gays, and he's openly hostile to Freemasonry, too.

It's not quite clear if Ms. Sarandon's comments refer to the Pope's Nazi record in the HJ during the war or his policies which she interprets as "Nazi-like" (my term). Have said that it's always dangerous (just ask HW Jr) to drop the Nazi "bomb" on someone. In the end, very few analogies to the Nazis hold up. Remember, they were really, really bad – state-sponsored genocide based on cult-like beliefs and a desire to remake the world (or at least Easter Europe and the Soviet Union) in their own image of what was pure (read Aryan). If you weren't Aryan you were an Untermensch and not worthy. I certainly don't know what Ms. Sarandan is referring to with the Pope but I'm pretty certain he is not analogous to a Nazi.

Does that make us Nazis? Why not? How cruel was THAT? They come across the ocean (and I'll bet that was fun) after escaping the horrors of WWII expecting to be taken in to the "land of the free and home of the brave" only to find a big rejection. No Jews need apply. How cruel was that? We would not let them land. They were turned back. And what did OUR grandparents say about that nasty little piece?? What wonderful department of American government made that glorious decision????

From what I understand, Susan Sarandon is correct in calling the current Pope a nazi. I believe he was in the Hitler Youth. Susan Sarandon is simply pointing out the truth. If the ADL would like to bury their heads in the sand that is up to them, but she has nothing to apologize for. If anything, the Pope should own up to his participation.

Susan Sarandon does not need to apologize. She has the right to express her views just like Hank Williams Jr did when he called our President a Nazi. What Sarandon said was not completely wrong. Susan, you seem to have a good heart, but please use the lesson that people like John Lennon learned over and over again, that although you have the freedom to say what you want, words do hurt and people can be unforgiving. He was a 14 year old forced member of Hitler Youth, refused to go to the meetings and saw his little down syndrome cousin taken away and murdered by the Nazis. He was drafted by the German army along with his brother WHILE IN THE SEMINARY. Can any of us cast the first stone? I certainly can't. I'm not that perfect.

    A Roma Holocaust – A Gypsy Remembers
    by Marcello Anrani –

Night falls with a grim thud on the concertina wire.
I get my gypsy sumadj out of bed muttering,
"It's the Jews that have caused all Germany's problems –
not the gypsies ... the Jews.
If only I could make Hitler understand."

My thoughts drift back to all of the nights around the covered wagon – the singing, the dancing, OY!
Tears well up in my eyes and flow down my cheeks like the banks of the Dnieper river in the Danzig flood of 1873 in which 3,000 gypsies perished.
I blow my nose – Italian style – on the rough wood floor
Life was good back then for a gypsy.
We stole, danced and kidnapped little children.
Now there's blood flecked mucus on the floorboards and I have to listen to the complaints of the Jews.
Do they think this is some kind of tough love camp?
I retie my bandanna on my black locks, a gleam in my dark eyes.
    It's red.

He was one of the finest Americans I ever met. Loved his adopted country, proudly flew his flag every day, worked hard, raised good kids, paid his taxes. My Dad and him were great friends. I'm guessing that she, like a lot of people, believes that the fact that the pope fought on the German side during WWII makes him a Nazi. This isn't factually accurate, but Sarandon isn't the only one to believe it. Or she's combining that with the fact that conservative Catholics frequently share many of the Nazi's beliefs...I mean, the last time Jews and Muslims and Jehovah's Witnesses and gays and many, many others were being slaughtered by the thousands, the Catholic Church kept its mouth shut; one might even argue that if Catholicism hadn't been so heavily infused in Europe the Holocaust may never have been able to happen. Who's to say the Church would step in or stand up now, if something that horrifying ever happened again?

All that said, calling the current pope a Nazi is, in the end, a political and not a factual statement. It's just not as insanely outlandish as some people seem to think.

The fact that the parents of the Pope were members of the Nazi Party does not in and of itself make the Pope a willing Nazi. As a child, we do as our parents tell us because we are in the developmental stages of our lives. During WW II all youths at a certain age automatically became members of the Hitler Youth movement, like it or not. That in and of itself doen't make the Pope a willing Nazi either, however, the fact that he chose to leave the Youth movement and was being hunted by the Youth Movement at wars end does seem to indicate he had views that were not consitant with those of the Hitler Youth Movement. The fact that we do not consider the children of parents that were members of The Black Panthers or the KKK to automatically be members or supporters of those groups also goes to show the Pope may not have been a Nazi simply because his parents were. What she said was very reckless and she should apologize for her comments least she find herself on the "Hollywood Black List" and will hench forth find little or no work that may be connected in any way to Hollywood. Now in her defense, was she within her right to express her opinion? The answer is yes but the bigger question is did she think about the consequences of her actions before making such a statement? The answer to that is probably not so the decision now is what she should do about her problem. That to is her decision and this reader hopes she does a better job of considering the consequences than she did the first time.

I personally believe that everyone has the right to speak their piece and voice their personal opinions. If Susan wants to call him a nazi then I'm sure she has her reasons. Political correctness is often just a polite way to enforce censorship. Maybe someone should find out why she calls him a nazi before just smothering her views under the blanket of political correctness.

He was later drafted into an anti-aircraft unit of the German army, though he deserted two years later without having fired a shot."

How would you have reacted at that time at that age? Don't preach facts like that and just assume that's all to the story. German youth had no choice but to join the Nazi youth. That Benedict XVI was a reluctant member does not make him a Nazi, either de facto or de jure. A Nazi is someone who subscribes to certain beliefs. Benedict XVI never held Nazi beliefs. When asked, while in the Nazi youth, what he wanted to be in the future, he replied "a priest." His answer evoked nothing but derision from the Nazi youth leaders. To think a religious person would willingly join such an organization displays ignorance or naivete.

The only excuse Sarandon can have for her statement is that she is undergoing some emotional crisis in her life and is temporarily unhinged. If this is the case, I wish her well and hope for a speedy recovery. She can then apologize for her remarks about Holy Father Benedict XVI. If that is not the case, and she knowingly may these remarks, I still wish her well, for she will need all the good wishes she can get.

Here we have a prime example of political correctness at work with the ADL calling for an apology for a statement that may be offensive, but is the plain truth. I think Foxman is jealous that this actress was spontaneous in her comment, whereas Foxman plays both sides when it is convenient for him to do so. Where the issue of Nazis and Catholics are concerned, we can forgive for the past but we must not forget that the Pope's silence on a number of issues that divide the two religious groups have yet to be mended.

Yes, Hank Williams was criticizing people who disagree for trying to work together. This is the problem that we have in Congress today, that the members feel that they can make no compromise with those they disagree with in the slightest. The current gridlock is the result. Even if Williams hadn't brought up Nazism, his comments would have been offensive, because they suggest there is no way for disagreeing parties to work together to accomplish something. People in relationships, parents and children, co-workers, friends, all know that compromise is not only possible but necessary for relationships to continue. This current mania against "compromise" is ridiculous.

Did it ever occur to these ADL hypocrites that it's possible Sarandon was on to something? It's no revelation that he joined the Hitler Youth as a youngster in Germany. And for those who want to defend this, I challenge you to find any record of him or his family being among the righteous Catholic families who actually granted sanctuary for Jews within their neighborhood. Just because he says he didn't participate in rounding Jews up nor even seeing the death camps, he's no Oscar Schindler.

I agree 100% with this opinion. This Pope is not a representative of any great moral standing particularly since he is pushing for the canonization of another former Pope who was complicit in not saving Jews from persecution and a one-way trip to concentration camps.

And for that matter, the oh-so-wonderful United States of America refused to allow a whole shipful of Jewish survivors to land here and disembark at the end of the war. Does that make us all Nazis??? Why not? How cruel was that?? They travel across the damned ocean after escaping the horrors of Germany, looking forward to coming to "the land of the free and the home of the brave" liberators, expecting to be welcomed with open arms and what did they get??? "No Jews need appy". Shameful. Forget the Pope, what were our grandparents saying? What part of our hypocritical govt. made

There is a big difference between SS & Hank Williams. Ratzinger was not only in the Hitler Youth but also served various duties in the German military. I seem to remember another supposedly 'peaceful' statesman , Kurt Waldheim, covering up his Nazi past. I also find it fascinating that the details of this period of the Pope's life seemed to be supplied by his relatives and his own memoirs. Any independent sources? Have you ever seen the footage of Ratzinger slapping the journalist? More Nazi than peacemaker in my book.

He defends the Catholic Churches actions during the WWII and we know that Pope Pius XII was complicit in actions that hurt the Jews. it shouod be easy to apologize for the Church's actions.

I would not agree Susan Sarandon exercised good taste in her comments but I can't argue that she was wrong in any way. If we can accept that men in their 80s and 90s can be tried and sentenced for being Nazis simply because they had the misfortune of being drafted in their teens and early twenties and assigned to guard a camp but not hold the pope to the same standard of guilt by association then we are all hypocrites. I think it is more Nazi like to think that it ok to punish people publicly for their opinions simply becuse we don't agree with them than it is to call someone whom was in fact was a Nazi an "Nazi."

Sarandon, just as with anyone who calls another person a "Nazi" (e.g., Hank Williams, Jr.), should be vilified by the media, expected to apologize publicly, and lose job opportunities. In spite of Oscar Shindlers participation in that group I think people rightly associate it with an ideology that has caused extremes in human suffering. People may incorrectly use the word to describe things that they don't like that have nothing to do with real suffering and hate or to label people whom were never part of that specific group or its subsequent iteration of hate groups but it still rightly represents the worst that humanity has to offer and how quickly the masses can be swept up. It represents the desperate need for vigilance and deterence, because the crowd is sometimes wrong. And always wrong when lead by a charismatic monster.

Her comments only have to do with ignorance. The current pope was forced into the Hitler youth, a military requirement for children, which is NOT the same thing as choosing to be in the Nazi party. The Hitler youth does not = Nazi party. They were two different groups. Also, the pope defected early on because he disagreed with it and fled, along with many other youths. So, that hardly sounds like Nazism to me.

Glad you think it was so easy to escape the end of the war. I'd tell my Grandfather who escaped a concentration camp you think his journey was not that hard. I'll make sure to mention you think that because it was the end. I'm sure he'll agree the dogs, guns, bullets, hiding, chasing, no food and utter terror he experienced was just a cake walk. OH wait! I can't tell Grandpa, he's been gone for 3 years.
Trust me, after hearing his story it was NOT easy. It was scary as hell. And we have the luxury of knowing the war was at an end. They did not. Sure things were unraveling, but how were they to know it was only a short time away. So easy to be a Monday morning quarterback almost 70 years later.

I find it difficult to believe, Mommyboo, that you'd equate escaping from a concentration camp with the pope's escape from the Nazi army. I don't think the pope was surrounded by armed guards and barbed wire fences, beaten and malnourished, when he fled. To set the record straight, this is from

"All German teens were obligated to participate in the Hitler Youth. Ratzinger joined when he was 14 and remained in the group about a year, leaving as soon as he was permitted. He was later drafted into an anti-aircraft unit of the German army, though he deserted two years later without having fired a shot."

This is equivalent to calling every white American a Klansman, since this country was segragated sixty years ago, so there is no "technical merit" to her comment. Her comment was designed to offend, and it does. My own opinion is that the world needs fewer offensive comments.

Señora Sarandon, le suplico tenga mas cuidado con sus comentarios porque con ellos solo denota su ignorancia. Este tipo de comentarios hechos por artistas de cine o televisión, demuestran una vez que clase de educación tienen estas gentes. Seran muy buenas interpretando papeles no reales pero en cuanto otros temas son totalmente ignorantes y el gran problema es que influyen en personas mas ignorantes aún. since it is a well-known fact that he deserted from the Hitler Youth and was never a Nazi party member, it is simply embarrassing for Sarandon to call him a nazi. I'm not a fan of the catholic church or the pope and surely there is lots to critizise, but for a German being called a Nazi is the most offensive thing possible, especially since Germans are still ashamed of their Nazi past and are doing what they can to be honest and open about it (something Americans could improve on in terms of slavery, racism etc. To think that only 40 years ago – long after the Nazi regime was over, black people still had to fight for their right to vote or to sit in the front of a bus, is actually just as embarrassing as the nazi past.....(and let's not get startet on how the Indians were robbed and slaughtered)
I like Susan Sarandon and I like people who speak their mind, but this was uncalled for and simply rude – and therefore embarrassing for her. Though I don't the pope cares much what some movie acress says. He probably doesn't even know who she is and why should he.

My mother was required to attend Hitler youth events. That was shortly before the war, while things were a bit radical but not quite to the same level that they got during the war. I heard the stories from her about the weird stuff they were pumping into the kids. Every kid of a certain age had to participate, no matter what opinion they had or didn't have. Frankly the kids were mostly thinking about the chores they had to do after the stupid meeting was over, not about what they were being told about HItler.

We don't have any parallel to the Hitler youth in society today, but as I understand it, it was a little like being in the scouts, except more focused on worshiping the political force of the day. They played games, had some fun, and also got indoctrination and brainwashing. Maybe they have something along these lines in Iran or Venezuela today. Anybody have any actual information about that please share.

First, a disclaimer. I do not think that Pope Benedict/Ratzinger should be confused with a willing and prominent member of the Nazi party. That said:

It's not defamation if it's true. Back when Benedict/Ratzinger was a child, he was in the Hitler youth (no choice of course), and went on to be a member of the German military. This does in fact qualify him as a Nazi. Personally, I don't like the fact that under Benedict, the church has quickly become much more conservative, as it was before Pope John Paul. But either way, the statement that he was a part of the Nazi regime is in fact true.

Considering Pope Pious X helped Hitler gain supreme leadership in Germany (remember he was voted to be Fur, the tipping vote was influenced by the Pope) and Benedict certainly has a questionable history, I say good for her. Rome turned away scores of Jews from Croatia seeking refuge during WWII, who were later killed by the Nazis, some of the Croate Jews were skinned to death. The Catholic church should take responsibility for its role before and during WWII.

A little basic research will provide the fact that there were many other boys in Ratzinger's village who refused to join and suffetred the consequences. Not so the Ratzinger brothers. The current pope voluntarily joined in 1941, when it would not have been mandatory. Furthermore, he didn't leave the German army until May,1945, long after it was apparent Germany was losing. He picked the winning side when he thought it was and then abandoned his country when things turned for the worse. Ratzinger himself has never fully explained the discrepancies.

      The current pope's fair game.

Susan Sarandon is not, nor were her remarks false, but truthful and spot on.

I understand that most of Germany and Austria were Nazis in the 1940's and once Hitler was defeated they quit as fast as they could. But weren't they in fact Nazis? Therefore, the Pope was a Nazi.
