'Arrested Development' aims to return to TV (and there'll be a movie, too)

We've been eagerly awaiting the "Arrested Development" movie that star Jason Bateman has promised is in the works, but it looks like series creator Mitchell Hurwitz is going to do us one better.

Hurwitz, who executive produced the cult classic show from 2003 to 2006, announced at the "Arrested Development" cast reunion on Sunday that they're trying to bring the program back to TV.

The idea is that it would set the stage for the feature film, Hurwitz explained to the audience gathered at the event, which was hosted by the New Yorker.

"We don't completely own the property, there are business people involved and studios and that kind of thing. Just creatively, I have been working on the screenplay for a long time and found that as time went by, there was so much more to the story," Hurwitz said, according to the New York Times.

"In fact, where everyone's been for five years became a big part of the story. So in working on the screenplay, I found even if I just gave five minutes per character to that back story, we were halfway through the movie before the characters got together."

Which is why they're planning a "limited-run series" leading up to the film. "We're basically hoping to do nine or 10 episodes, with almost one character per episode," Hurwitz said.

He stayed mum on details about a studio that would air the series or that would back the film, noting that this sort of set-up would require "studios to work together that don't typically work together, film and TV." Hurwitz did say that he's about halfway done with the "Arrested Development" screenplay, though.

Bateman, who reiterated during the cast reunion that although creatively everyone's on board, they still have to work out the business details, tweeted Sunday, "It's true. We will do 10 episodes and the movie. Probably shoot them all together next summer for a release in early '13. VERY excited!"

I guess they couldn't take a hint from the show's low ratings and the fact that it got cancelled twice. Fox actually cancelled it and brought it back since it won so many awards. But the fact of the matter is, no one watched it because it was not funny! It was just a bunch of stupid plots that never lived up to their hype. I get that there are some die hard Arrested Deveopment fans out there but there are not enough to justify bringing it back to tv and definitely not enough to justify a movie. Let's leave the show where it belongs... cancelled and forgotten.

I Arrested development is arguably the best show ever. However, there would be no A.D. had SOAP (another fantastic, groundbreaking, ahead of it's time show) never existed. I watched every episodes of SOAP reruns on Comedy Central and appreciated all the Soap references hidden throughout AD's run starting with the intro in the pilot. A.D. just takes jokes so much further, piling inside jokes upon inside jokes. I think that was part of the problem. It took watching EVERY episode, sometimes multiple times to get all the jokes. The average viewer today had neither the intellect, nor the attention span to learn to love the show.

IAnyway, I can't wait to see the movie! Just hope they don't dumb it down at all.

GOB: "Rock beats paper, I win!"
Michael: "Doesn't make a lot of sense, rock should beat everything."
GOB: "There's not a lot logic behind it, kind of like when a boat sinks they say 'women and children first'."

    (later in the episode...)

"GOB charged at Michael with the ribbon cutting scissors, and just as Michael always chooses rock, he defended himself with the model house's rock, showing that rock beats scissors. Unfortunatley, the whole incident was covered by the paper."

My single most favorite moment was when Henry Winkler's character (sorry, it's been so long since I saw this show) is in the men's room at the courthouse, and he goes to comb his hair, and realizes that, like the Fonz, his hair is perfect and does that move he did a thousand times on Happy Days. Hope I explained that properly. If you didn't get this show it sucked, but if you got it, it definitely is one of the funniest shows ever. I remember SOAP being hilarious but I don't think it would hold up today.

I am ALMOST on board with you. Soap was my all-time favorite program for years and years. I had episodes on DVD and could watch them over and over. However, once Arrested Development came out, Soap was knocked down to 2nd place. AD is much funnier than Soap, the writing is much more clever and it is far more quotable. I still think Soap is great but it is no Arrested Development.

    • Soap wasn't better

      1) It's Always Sunny
      2) Curb Your Enthusiasm
      3) Arrested Development

Everything else can't compare to these three. AD is close, but not quite as entertaining as #1 and #2, for me anyways.
Of course, Breaking Bad is better than anything else, period.

For anyone who says humor is subjective: you are dead wrong. Unlike science, humor is not whatever we want it to be. What one person finds funny, everyone else will. Fact. Take Dane Cook, the funniest man to walk the earth. Does he think AD is funny? Answer: who cares, he sucks. I'm a doctor.

Observer, I would leave politics out of this. If you don't like the show, don't watch it when/if it returns.

GOB: "Rock beats paper, I win!"
Michael: "Doesn't make a lot of sense, rock should beat everything."
GOB: "There's not a lot of logic behind it, kind of like when a boat sinks they say 'women and children first'."

      (later in the episode...)

"GOB charged at Michael with the ribbon cutting scissors, and just as Michael always chooses rock, he defended himself with the model house's rock, showing that rock beats scissors. Unfortunatley, the whole incident was covered by the paper."
