George Clooney talks turning 50

We think George Clooney's only getting better with age, but the actor says turning 50 has come with a few adjustments.

"I look at myself on-screen and go, 'I don't look like I did when I was 40–I know that,'" Clooney tells Parade.  "The people I've respected most in the industry over the years — Paul Newman, for instance. I just loved the way he handled growing old on-screen. It's understanding that you're now basically a character actor."

"I find that as you get older, you start to simplify things in general. By the time you get a subscription to AARP, which I just got, you have some idea of who your friends are, at least. [Getting the AARP subscription] shocked me–'Are you kidding?' [laughs] I told them they should do 'The Sexiest Man Still Alive.'"

If the AARP does get around to Clooney's idea, you won't hear about it from the actor.

"I don't tweet, I don't go on Facebook. I think there's too much information about all of us out there," he says. "I'm liking the idea of privacy more and more. There will be funny things, like I'll read something I've said about a woman somewhere. And I haven't spoken about my relationships in 15 years."

George Clooney unveils his 100 favorite films

What he will talk to you about, of course, is his upcoming film "Ides of March," also starring Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti. (It's also one of our most anticipated movies of the fall.) Clooney plays a presidential candidate in the movie, which is based on Beau Willimon’s 2008 play "Farragut North."

"We were in pre-production on this film in 2007, before the Obama election," Clooney reveals in the interview. "And then we realized that a good portion of the country was elated with what happened in that election, so we had to shelve the movie until people were cynical again. I didn't think it would be quite this quick [laughs]."

"The Ides of March" opens October 7.

George and any one else turing 50 should read my self-help book on this subject, "Fifty Isn't Fatal Anymore." I give a positive spin on how we baby boomers are never really going to age. We are all big kids at heart!

So George Clooney reached fifty years of age. A lot of people live longer and reach 100 plus years of age. I hope he has longevity of life and happiness. His claim to fame is probably more recognized because he is the "Nephew of Rosemary Clooney, a very popular and fantastic singer of a few decades ago. The longest person on record for living is Jeanne Calment, 1875-1997, 120 years old, a French Lady !!

George Clooney's appeal escapes me. Dumped a chick for saying she'd like a family. AND millions of people turn 50 every day. Who cares what his opinions are? Try working for a living and then talk to me.

@Col t – Yes he broke up w/ someone because they wanted a family and he is content as is. So what YOU'RE saying is you would stay with someone who wanted something you adamently didn't. That's called settling (and wimping out). George has the confidene, swagger, (and grasp on the obvious) that something else will come along. He's comfortable in his life and isn't willing to be peer pressured into someone or something he"s not. It's a lesson anyone not in a happy relationship should follow. He's been married. It didn't work out. He doesn't want to go through that again. esp when this life is working so well for him.

There comes a time we have to bite the blleut and protect the borders even if it is on a volunter basis and with the borders so compromised now we need real blleuts in real guns to stop the infiltration rather than cede land to Mexico because the creep will continue until it hits middle America, if it hasnt already. Our Country should be sovereign and English speaking, undiluted and free from outside influence from the White House.

By the time your in your 60's you're going to need double knee replacements. Moderation in exercise, as in life, is the key to success.

50 can b the new 35 40 50 60 etc. Depends on how well u cared for yourself. Im 53 5' 7" 140 lb. I run 45 to 50 miles weekly because i like to compete. I have been a runner since the age of 18 and used to run up to 80 miles weekly At 22 i quit eating the typical american diet. No red meat or pork. No hamburgers hot dogs or pop. No fried foods. Essentially i quit eating garbage. The ladies at the clubs think im in my late 30's. I dont have as much grey as clooney. In fact i have very little grey. Im fairly certain clooney maintains a good exercise program and probably eats well.

WOW why so many jealous folks in here. What I got from FLying heron is that he works out even at 53, eats healthy meals instead of Micky D and stay in shape. He takes care of his body and his hygiene. Since he works out he is not fat like most folks in the USA and keeping in shape makes him look better and younger. So what is wrong with that?I went to school in Barcelona SPain and most people there are slim and all the men are as good looking as George and the women are like models. They eat great Mediterranean diet with lots of veggies and fish. If you folks want to see beautiful white folks travel to Spain or Southern Europe.

I appreciate the sincerity of the women who reassure the 'older men' on this string not to worry, they get "less picky" as they get older. So they are willing to SETTLE for less. George, whom as a straight male, I have idolized for years does not SETTLE. He knows what he likes and has the courage that most here don't. He goes for it until he gets it (and without stalking). You can say it's the stardom, fame, & fortune. But my wife is married to me...a loyal, decent looking guy who makes a slightly above medium salary. And she is ELEVEN years my junior. I saw what I wanted and went for it.
What you see George has isn't an edginess, it's confidence. That's what attracted my wife to me. And I had to work to even get a first date. So 50+'s, stop complaining, get up get out and wow someone. Stop hating on George because he does (with or without money) what you don't want to have to work to do.

I don't understand that comment about women getting less picky as they get older. I'm getting MORE picky as I get older. I don't have time or patience for low quality men. Men don't have to be rich or famous to be high quality either. I have my own means so I don't care to marry. There is so much more to life than to aim at 'family' as the only worthy goal. Making 'having children' the ultimate goal of life would be rather a bore to look forward to.

But that 7/11 worker, depending on age most likely has a girlfriend or wife. He obviously has a job and work ethic. So he, and George don't really care if you lok at him (rugged looks or not). He has a life and doesn't care about yours. Geaorge is fortunate enough to live a celebrity's life and the benefits that go with it. But the rest of us have the benefit of living our lives to the fullest the 'everyman' can. And my benefits have been incredible! Granted I had to put in some work to get them. Most here expect that it should pop up on a silver platter for them. Or unless the score a George, they are not happy. My wife is a beautiful, loyal, hard working mother of our 2 children. George Clooney has surrounded himself with quality actors and good movie scripts. He was more enduring in his younger years, riding his vintage motorcycles and taking care of his potbelly pig. However, he seems a bit arrogant in not dating women of appropriate age. Come on George, dating women young enough to be your biological daughter? Revolting. None of his relationships seem to last more than 5 years. No children to leave behind a legacy. At least Paul Newman stayed loyal to his young sweetheart and they raised their children together. Paul didn't keep trading in his partner for a younger, prettier model.

@ becer nah, look at Al Pacino – he is 71 and still got VERY young girlfriend. Even when they are 80 – they still are going to have their exceptional personality, fame, resources, and a look, that is much better than average 80 years old look.

Humor is the only way to cope: When I turned 50 I suddenly realized the wisdom of Jack Benny when he always claimed to be 39! So as my friends and I tack one more year on, we just say when we are asked: Why,I'm only thirty-nine, like Jack Benny!

There is something about George Clooney (the person, not the actor) that I find extremely unlikable. He has this edge to him, and this overwhelming ego. He exudes "jerk." Onscreen, he is engaging and warm. Born to be an actor, I guess.

I don't care for him personally or as an actor. He's kind of a tool IMO...and not that great of an actor.

You should google "Clooney Charlton Heston remark" to see what an insulting doushb@g pr1ck he is. It also shows his ignorance about gun rights too.

Everyone has their opinion, I guess. Actually I wasn't a George Clooney fan until I saw "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" and I've liked him ever since. I think he's one of the more down-to-earth actors out there.

@Joepub Lighten up. I googled it and saw the joke. So what your saying is you've NEVER told a politically incorrect joke about anything (race, religion, a woman) in your life. Yeah, okay. Oh and he isn't ignorant on gun rights. It's called his stance on gun rights. On which I disagree with him. But doesn't make him an "insulting doushb@g pr1ck". It's America -->Freedom of Speech and choice. Heck, w/ my family history I have an incredible chance of Alzheimers or Lou Gherigs disease. Wehn/If I get either/both, I'll joke along with ya until I hit my long sleep (death). If I have alzheimer's I'll forget the joke anyways. Lighten up.

George even makes turning 50 sound cool. I turned 50 recently and I'm falling apart.... a sore elbow and knee that keeps me from working out and gained 30 pounds.I'm starting to lose hair on my head but ear, nose and eyebow hair is growing like crazy..... and thank God for Viagra. If I can find a girl that will over look a fat, balding guy with hair coming out of his nose and ears the Viagra will help. Keep up the good work George. Us old guys need to stick together.

It's really not fair. At 53, now when I look at a cute young(er) woman, she just kind of sneers at me like i'm a lecherous old man (which I am). I suspect George doesn't have that problem.

Don't let the pictures fool you. George has had plenty of problems...some major back surgery too...and he's got a couple of hitches in his gitalong like the rest of us. He just cleans up a little better than most of us. I don't doubt he's chasing hairy ears and nose like everyone else.

Hey Jr. Baldness is in style and people love it. Girls will go for more than the exterior of a guy if he has a true appealing character within himself. You've reached 50 and that is not bad. Just take some good health measures and action and you may be around for a lot more years which they call longevity. Life is much more than just a pleasure approach all the time. LIFE IS GOOD especially when you consider the alternatives.
