Tony Bennett: We caused 9/11

Tony Bennett's conversation with Howard Stern turned political when he stopped by the radio host's Sirius XM program on Monday.

Bennett told Stern that when he was being honored at the Kennedy Center in 2005, then President Bush revealed to Bennett that "he made a mistake [about the Iraq war]."

And with that, Bennett and Stern were off into a discussion about the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

"You gotta eliminate war, but what do you do with these terrorists who blew up the World Trade Center?" Stern inquired, to which Bennett replied, "Who are the terrorists? Are we the terrorists, or are they the terrorists? Two wrongs don't make a right."

He continued that he wasn't on board with the statement that those who attacked started the conflict. "They flew the plane in, but we caused it. We were bombing them, and they told us to stop."

Later on in the conversation, Bennett added that he believed "To start a war in Iraq was a tremendous, tremendous mistake internationally," according to Mediaite.

The singer, who was promoting his new album "Duets II," has since posted a statement to clarify the comments he made on Stern's show, and to apologize if they were misconstrued.

"I am so grateful to be an American and as a World War II veteran, I was proud to fight to protect our values, which have made America the greatest country on the planet," the 85-year-old singer says in the statement.

"There is simply no excuse for terrorism and the murder of the nearly 3,000 innocent victims of the 9/11 attacks on our country," the statement continues. "My life experiences -ranging from the Battle of the Bulge to marching with Martin Luther King – made me a life-long humanist and pacifist, and reinforced my belief that violence begets violence and that war is the lowest form of human behavior. I am sorry if my statements suggested anything other than an expression of my love for my country, my hope for humanity and my desire for peace throughout the world."

Tony Bennet is absolutely right. Do Americans even know what your country had been doing before 9/11?

the shooting down of two Libyan planes in 1981
the bombing of Lebanon in 1983 and 1984
the bombing of Libya in 1986
the bombing and sinking of an Iranian ship in 1987
the shooting down of an Iranian passenger plane in 1988
the shooting down of two more Libyan planes in 1989
the massive bombing of the Iraqi people in 1991
the continuing bombings and draconian sanctions against Iraq for the next 12 years
the bombing of Afghanistan and Sudan in 1998

And I should be interested in Tony Bennett's policitical views because.....? It is a slap in the face of all those who died to say we caused 911. There is NO excuse for attacking civilian targets in war, let alone without declaring one. It was cowardly. If I were a loved one of one of the victims, I'd be enraged. Tony, stick to singing "I left my heart in San Francisco'. There is no question that the US has made and continues to make a lot of mistakes in foreign policy. However, there is never an excuse for deliberately killing innocents. NEVER.

Absolute utter nonsense. Quite the contrary is true-9/11 occurred because we didn't bomb Al qaeda.

Bennett says Al Qaeda attacked us because "we bombed them"? What? So, Mr. Bennett, we are to blame for 9/11 because we bombed Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11? (tongue-in-cheek). When did we ever bomb Al Qaeda before 9/11? Never. In fact, 9/11 came about because we didn't take stern action against al qaeda after they bombed the wtc in 1993, the USS Cole, our Embassy in Nairobi, et. al .

If he meant Al qaeda attacked us because we bombed Iraq, then that is a tacit admission Al qaeda and Saddam's baath Party were in bed together, an argument which (already dispelled) would have justified the second invasion of Iraq. It is simply preposterous to state or imply such a claim.

Mr. Bennett, of all people, should have drawn on WWII history as a lesson against the dangers of appeasement and indifference to extremist/totalitarian movements (i.e., Chamberlain appeasement of Hitler), but he clearly instead drinks Hollywood "blame America first" apologist kool-aid. President Clinton could have stopped Al Qaeda but did almost nothing, aside from a few cruise missles at an empty tent.

He also seems to buy, at least by implication, the same tired old Al qaeda and liberal apologist mantra about US imperialism for Middle east oil and alleged western hate of Islam. Fact-had the US wanted Iraqi oil, Bush I could have invaded Baghdad in 1991 and taken it, but this never happened and the US has since left Iraq again, leaving Iraqi oil on the world market. fact-the US has intervened to protect muslim lives on numerous occassions-the 1990's US bombing of Serbs in Kosovo to protect Albanian muslims comes to mind, but the US has also intervened to protect muslims from the Soviet invasion in 1980, the liberation of Kuwait from saddam, and even stopped the Anglo-Franco-Israeli attempt to attack Egypt and grab the Suez canal. Hardly a pattern or practice of deliberate subjugation of a religion.

Conclusion-Bennett's a great entertainer, but a senior moment he himself caught and apologized for. No rational person believes America deserved 9/11, that it was justified in any way, or that America caused it. Al qaeda's litany of grievances they used to declare war on civilization (yes, civilization) are pretextual bulloubaise, an Islamo-fascist mein kampf. I believe Bennett came to realize this, and pulled the foot from his mouth.

What an unsophisticated and naive take on 9/11, another example of leftist unreason and illogic. Significant percentages of Muslims worldwide justify suicide bombing and terrorism as an acceptable tactic. During his time of hiding following 9/11, Osama bin Laden was viewed favorably by large percentages of people in the Muslin world – Pakistan (65%), Jordan (55%) Morocco (45%), Turkey (31%) . Placing the blame for these figures entirely on US foreign policy is just willful ignnorance, obviating the role and influence of Islam, their culture, Arab-state policies, centuries of repressive and backwards thinking, not to mention the obvious pathological hatred for the West in the Muslim world. What a joke to think you can change the world through foreign policy. Only a shallow assessment and understanding of human nature combined with blind conceit could lead a person to that conclusion.

Tony Bennett should stick to singing and do a little more reading. We didn't bomb them for no reason. They blew up our embassies. Violence sucks, but sometimes it's the only way and necessary to speak to people in their own language.

Think about it- they flew the planes into financial district – knowing it would do damage. It did more than that. – the cost of two wars with loss of life, liberty (securing our borders) and pursuit of happiness (teaching our children to fear instead love honor and respect) and most of turn against each. Hmmm their mission accomplished!!!!!!

Members of the mafia think that they are honorable. They go to church, They profess love for their wives and children. They claim to love America. And, they actually think that they "go to work" like the rest of us.

If a mafioso ever crossed me, hurt my friends or family, ever tried to press or extort from mine, or intimidate, I`d take them out. I`m smart enough to know how to build a rocket propelled grenade in my garage and I`d get them from afar.

What Bennett is saying is that, through out self-serving rationalizations, sometimes we act like the Mafia and when a human has had enough, they will lash out.

It just boggles my mind that people of any faith are in favor of killing anyone. Life is a precious thing and God would be the last one to teach anger, hate, destruction of your fellow humans no matter what. Religion should be teaching to refrain from all these actions of hate and destruction every day. Just believing in God and going to church is not enough to make you a better person in the eyes of God. You have to respect your fellow human beings short life on this earth and make this a better place for everyone.

If you do some real research into the 911 events, you will find that something really STINKS about the so-called facts the government wants you to believe. The controlled mass media does not speak the truth either. They tell you what they want you to know and most sheeple believe it like good little lap dogs. Of course, people can keep their head in the sands all they want. Tony is not some old senile man. He is speaking the truth. The truth hurts. I am a firm believer that the 911 events need to be investigated...for real this time. Here's a few items to consider and do your own research... It's a real eye-opener...

The most secure air space in the US, and NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) were told to stand down, by the CIA, to allow a drill to take place of simulated planes flying into buildings. What they didn't know, it was happening for real. Never in the history had NORAD been told not to do their job, but on this date of Sept. 11.

There is nothing on record of a steel framed building coming down from a fire, unless from an earthquake or a controlled demolition. Steel doesn't weaken until about 2,000 degrees. At 3,000, it starts to melt. Look into the Windsor building in Spain that burned for days, but never fell, like the mainstream media tried to predict because the WTC towers fell. The Jets and jet fuel DID NOT BRING THOSE TOWERS DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Various witness of 911 who have spoken about witnessing the atrocities have died or are so scared to speak, for fear of being murdered or their familiies harmed or murdered.

Bush fired all FBI agents who dared to question the 911 tragedy and who wanted to do a real investigation.

There is no evidence a plane EVER hit the Pentagon. The round hole of distruction displayed does not add up to a 757 jet hitting it. There were about 84 camera angles of the pentagon in that section, but the tapes have been confiscated and they will only show that one angle of a blast because A PLANE NEVER HIT THE PENTAGON!!!!!!! Jesse Ventura spoke with a witness who was so scared to talk about it, but she mentioned seeing a missile and not a plane. She was corrected later and left the state for fear of her family and will no longer speak to the public about it...

You have to ask yourself, why is the government so unwilling to open this up and get to the real truth?

Call me crazy all you want, but something is definitely wrong with the "story" and 1+1=2 not 3...

Bin laden- al queda was used by the CIA in the 70s and 80s. The twin towers was a CONTROLLED DEMOLITION falling at nearly freefall speed.. impossible for just planes hitting..But asking urself why the government did this is not enough. Its simply said whenever we're faced with something threaterning..we will give up our rights for so called security. But realize that WE are the targets of homeland security, and not this pretend enemy of terriosts. Wow I have never read so many disrespectful comments in my life. Remember people this is an 80 year old American war veteran. This is the arrogance that the world is talking about when pertaining to the United States. We as Americans always think we’re right and the one who disagrees best beware.
We thought we were right when we invaded the Indians, you know when we discovered America lol. We thought we were right when we enslaved millions on Africans. You know for a new and upcoming nation there’s nothing like free labor. We thought we were right when women had no voting rights; American men thought women were not smart enough to choose its nations leaders. Segregation again we thought we where right. And now we have the nerve to think that just because someone stood up to us that some how we are right and they are wrong?? As you can see we have a long history of thinking we’re right when most of the time we’ve been wrong. The horrific act of 9/11 was not because of jealous "which is one of the statements I heard". Please think about it, if Russia bombs England, or Israel you better believe we are going after them. Not on the same note the Russian citizens will look at America as terrorists because they haven’t a clue of Russia’s back door schemes. The United States does this all the time and then they look shocked when some one attacks back.
This very country was established in an illegal fashion. Believe me if a country tried to do what we did to the Indians the world would be in an uproar. I applaud Mr. Bennett in speaking his mind just as I do Ron Paul. There is always two sides to a story, just as most of you believe what the US says happened, you best believe that there people who think other wise. It’s amazing; if we Americans would get out of our bubble you would see that most of the worlds really do not like us. And it’s our arrogance that tells us that it’s because others are jealous us of our freedom. We are quite possibly the youngest country in the world and for us to come on the seen and think that other countries are jealous of us reminds me of a young man who finally comes of age and thinks he’s going to teach an older man something new. It’s his young arrogances to think that what he just discovered is new information; it’s just new to him. I could get into the fact that we have troops in Germany as we speak. Why Hitler is dead? But most people believe what they want to believe. I’ll close with this; it’s very dangerous to think your right when everyone else in the room thinks you’re wrong.

People!! Look at the history of our dealings with the middle east–you cannot donate arms for one country to obliterate another and turn around and do the same thing for their enemy without consequences! No one is happy that 9/11 happened–it's awful! But our foreign policy with the arab world set this up to happen, and that's what Mr. Bennett is talking about. This has been going on for a long, long time but we're so removed from what people in other countries go through that it doesn't occur to us that they might be incensed to the point of turning on us. I actually talked to a woman at work who said the 9/11 bombing was worse than the bombings in the middle east because "they're used to it." No one gets used to having their family blown to smithereens. We didn't start these cultures who can't stop being at war with each other, but we threw fuel on the fire time and again to try to work a better foothold in the oil market, and surprise! It came back on us. Now we send our brave service members across the world and they return to us maimed or in coffins, because we are too proud as a country to admit when we are wrong. That is a damn shame. Also, if you think we're in the middle east to "free the people from oppression of ruthless dictators and religious zealots, you're very naïve. There's oppression and genocide everywhere in the world–our government doesn't get involved unless there's some kind of resource or strategic power to be had. Politics and foreign policy are ugly and there's no humanitarianism to them. We live in an imperialist nation whether we want to admit it or not and we need to take responsibility and put people in office consistently who will change our policy with other countries and lead us down a better road of fair trade and hopefully self sufficiency. Our government needs to stop it with the hypocritical, fake "humanitarian" reasoning they use to convince our citizens that wars are justifiable–we as citizens need to stop being naïve and start questioning our leaders more and hold them accountable for the lies they perpetrate! That's one of the ways we start to make the world a better place and hopefully stop things like 9/11 from happening again. Also I, like Mr. Bennett, am a veteran, and I have earned the right to speak.

As a former military intelligence analyst, I can say from some aspect he's not far off the mark. It wasn't our involvement in the gulf war that sparked al quaida's rise to prominence. It was the fact that after Kuwait was liberated, we maintained numerous bases in in one of the holiest muslim countries (though at the behest of those in control). Had we not remained there and bin laden not been exiled in the process, 9.11 may not have happened! Iraq on the other hand was a different beast. It was a wrong move due to the resource drain on what should have been our only objective...afghanistan. But to bring it back around to the original thought on what fueled AQ, if Iraq didn't happen, we would still be flying no fly zones at the behest of the UN and providing security to the Saudi's who frankly were ill-equipped to fend off a retaliation from Saddam for the Kuwait debacle. Also if you notice...there are no more US military bases in Saudi Arabia. 🙂

Lest anyone forgets, the US was enforcing the UN imposed no-fly zone in Iraq, which was repeatedly violated by Hussein. And he refused to let UN inspectors in to see whether he had restarted his nuclear program.

Today, one New York State reporter has said that Mr. Bennett's recent 9/11 comments were-just dumb or silly stuff that an old man says. So I guess that Bennett's choices, according to that reporter are: 1) a guy who accidentally acted like a total jerk, and blamed the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks on the USA, or 2) a claim that Bennett's personal old age problems have caused his brain to go soft and say dumb things about "world events", and "women drivers" and the like. If those are the only two opions, I don't envy Mr. Bennett for having to chose 1) or 20.

I admire Tony Bennett for his candor AND HIS WISDOM: we had NO business going into Iraq and starting that war. We DID cause 9/11 by our aggressive foreign policies in oil-rich countries. And until Americans can face this fact, there will be NO positive changes in the world of terror. This doesn't mean I don't feel for the victims and their families of 9/11 but I think it's very telling that Bennett was pressured to revise his statement in light of the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Sometimes people just don't want to face the truth. The truth will set you there's a thought!

Right on! How easily people forget: in the dirty world of politics and politics and oil, one dictator is your friend for one decade (ie. Saddam Hussein against Ayatollah's Iran) and the next decade he's your enemy, ie. Iraq War. We did business with Bin Laden in Afghanistan against the Russians and then he became our enemy, ie. 9/11.

Lots of people in this Country of ours exercise that right without ever having lifted a finger to help anyone but themselves. If you don't believe that American actions and policies played a large role in the motivation for the events of 9/11, what, then, is your explanation for why people decided to die in order to attack America?  To say that American policies were the reason these people did what they did neither justifies nor condones their actions, it  merely explains why they did it. I would think confronting and understanding the truth in a matter such as this would be viewed as more patriotic than letting emotions rule and blindly blaming millions of people for the actions of a few. The former may prevent future attacks such as 9/11, while the latter does nothing at best, and at worst incites the same hatred and anger that motivated the attackers in the first place. Does no one else think the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan made recruitment a lot easier for groups such as Al-Qaeda?

And, if you care to actually look at the TRUTH of why terrorism is happening and the West is a target, you need to take a long, hard look at American foreign policy in oil-rich countries. Once you do that, you'll understand better WHY they did it. We had no business going into Iraq or Afghanistan. That was the turning point for all this mess and the US is largely responsible for it.

Your ignorance is stunning; if you – like many Americans believe – you had NO responsibility whatsoever (I mean your government) for bringing on 9/11, you are quite simply deluded in your thinking. Many Islamic leaders the world over, warned the USA, not to invade Iraq. They did – and it was NOT a popularly supported war – and this is the end result. Many, many more innocents died in the Iraq War than the 9/11 bombing and while I feel for the victims and their families, there are thousands of people dying the world over every day, due to violence, greed for oil, and drugs.

He's right. We helped overthrow the Iranian people's elected government in 1953. The Iranians had finally ousted the hated royal Palavi family. The new Iranian government wasn't going to be as generous with their oil contracts so we helped remove it. They remember. Few Americans do. They don't even remember that American capitalists, led by the DuPont family, tried to raise a private army to take FDR hostage during WW2.

What many of you don't understand is the terrorists and their attacks on 9/11 did exactly what they intended – brought the United States to its knees financially. Look at what's happend to our financial system and economy as a direct result of fighting terrorism. In another 30 years we're going to be a third world nation if we continue to spend countless billions of dollars fighting an enemy we can't even find of defeat – that was their goal, and the terrorists have won. Its high time we as a country realize that, pull out of the middle east, tap our OWN oil reserves and close the damn boarders.

If you look at what he said and take a look at the factual basis for his claims it becomes very apparent that based on the reasons Al-Queda cited for attacking the U.S. on 9/11 that his statement about us "causing it" simply doesn't add up. The Hard Right Wing Republican't Fascist Party of America loves war. Any war. Just give 'em war. They'll cut all spending to the bone – except of course the Pentagon's budget and any politician who seeks to reign in spending by this agency will be labled un-American (over and over and over and over and over again) since, as they learned from Dr. Joseph Goebbels, if you tell a lie long enough it becomes the truth (Weapons of Mass Destruction). Our inability to be objective and fair-minded is what has brought us all these enemies and attacks. We project the image of being democratic and act otherwise in various situations. How can we continue to support nations who are occupiers and expect the occupied and their allies to leave us alone. As I'm writing, we are the main backer of a nation that is occupying another nation for the past forty years and don't seem to regret our actions. It's sad to see the thousands of lives we lost during 9/11 and yet we seem to ignore the plight of thousands of Palestinians murdered in cold blood in their struggle for freedom. We need to completely overhaul our foreign policy to suit the changing times.

I"m fascinated by folks who see all injustice in the world as emanating from Israel. Do you worry that as an American (which I take you to be), you live in a country that brutalized and cheated Native Americans out of their land, and continues to treat them as third class citizens? Do you hesitate to buy items from China, which doesn't think twice about jailing or executing people who disagree with its government? Do you cry tears for Aborigenes in Australia, or for Christians slaughtered by Muslims in Africa? Do you care about the outrageous acts of Muslims killing other Muslims at funerals, weddings and in schools? And not to let facts get in the way of your outrage, but Israel wound up with the West Bank because it had the audacity to win wars in which it was attacked by its Arab neighbors. And had the Arabs won, there'd be no Jews, because they would have been summarily slaughtered. Does it concern you that Palestinian children are taught in their schools that Jews are dogs and monkeys? Whatever your religion or not, that should be offensive. Do you care about the Palestinians in Jordan and Lebanon who are treated like dirt and denied rights by their Jordanian and Lebanese "brothers?" If you are going to be morally outraged, there's much in the world to be upset about. Israel is not the source of the world's problems. It was a Palestinian who killed Robert Kennedy, Palestinians who gave the world hijackings, and Palestinians who perfected suicide bombings. And way back in the early 70s, it was these same brave freedom fighters who slaughtered a classroom of kindergarten kids in Ma'alot, in northern Israel. They should have a state, but not because they deserve one, but because it might get them off the world's back. Though I doubt it. They'll always find others to blame for their troubles. They've perfected victimhood about all else.

They are not victims but perpetrators themselves. Every country in Africa that has problems are in strife because the Muslims are brutally attacking non-muslims. There are problems in Israel, China, Phillipines,Russia,Europe, and multiple other countries with the Muslim "victims" where they have done brutal acts of violence for their cause. Maybe they should have Martin Luther King as thier role model not Mohammed. Read the books "Infidel " and then the follow up "Nomad" by Ali Hirsi -unbelievably good books written by a muslim and get insight in to the muslim religion.

Can you imagine if it were Britain doing the bombing and fighting? We'd be crying fowl when we hear about thousands of civilians killed every month from the bloodshed they're causing, and at the same time Britain supporting dictators and regimes around the world in the name of "peace".

We are one government-corrupt nation. The question will be how do we look back at 9/11? Like Vietnam? A big waste of time and sacrifices that didn't need to be had? What shocks me are the responses from the "America or else" crowd. There are extremists and terrorists in every culture. There are extremists and terroists in every religion, Christian, Jewish, Islam and Hindu and all of these extremists are wrong. All propose that their god is the only god and, as a result, I am sick and tired of the next death in the name of religion.

Tony wants peace. What person, what sane person, can argue that thought? To challenge his thinking is ludicrous. It stems from either pure hatred or pure stupidity.

I love this country, but it is time to stop saying our way is the only way at the expense of the rest of the world. Likewise, it is time for every extremist Jew, Muslim and Hindu to think the same way. I am sure these thoughts I am expressing will be challenged, but those that challenge will only be the uninformed, ignorant or afraid.

It's foreign affairs policies need to be overhauled and its countrymen need to be better educated and taught more about the art of sharing responsibilty and less about pinning blame. "They flew the plane in, but we caused it. We were bombing them and they asked us to stop."

What? Al-Queda declared its reasoning for the attacks were our alliance with Israel, sanctions on Iraq and U.S. Troops in Saudi Arabia as part of operation "Southern Watch." The sanctions and troops were part of a UN Security Council resolution. Operation "Southern Watch" was the "no-fly zone" after the Gulf War. So to say that we in some way caused it is baseless. Unless which of course you would consider the former Iraqi regime as being welcoming towards Al-Queda, and I thought that topic had been put down long ago?

I agree with peace, but to say that we provoked Al-Queda into attacking us is crap. Unless of course you consider the U.S. agressors based on the freedoms we enjoy here in this country. And what exactly were we supposed to do after 9/11? Just roll with the punches?

Finally, someone with balls AND a brain. America has always been an international bully. Sometimes we get what we ourselves dish out.

He is 85 and maybe he doesn't remember the order of events. "We were bombing them and they told up to stop" ?????? I believe he has a definite political view but was running his mouth in a different gear than his brain.

Actually he's right, but it's a sequence of steps and time lines.

Nobody wants to admit "we deserved it", but we DO deserve a lot of things because we created the "messes". Israel? We created the state out of thin air and took land away to do it. You don't think that will tick someone off? We gone and done it to the Native Americans and we gone and done it to the Palestinians.

Know what else we did? Allied with Bin Laden against Russia to "protect against invaders and occupiers". Look what we gone and done as a hypocrite? Support dictators and build bases and occupy/bomb other middle-east countries. You don't think for one second we deserve the messes we created?

Lunacy is the only explanation to denying America wasn't going to be retaliated against, considering the countless bombings of embassies and military bases around the world leading up until 9/11.

We are one heck of an arrogant nation to consider us always right – we aren't.

Tony Bennett is a war hero and a great American, but at age 85, he's obviously a little confused. People shouldn't pick on the man for being a little fuzzy-headed. We didn't bomb Al Qaeda. We did bomb Iraq, but if that's the rationale for an attack by a group based in Afghanistan (one ideologically at odds with everything Saddam stood for), it's as dicy as Bush's infamous 16 words. Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11, though the Bush administration went out of its way to associate the two. Nor did Osama bin Laden claim the no-fly zone policy as a justification for his own campaign of terror and destruction. One factor in all of this is Tony Bennett's pacifism, a stance he adopted after The Battle of the Bulge, where he came face to face with his first dead German. From a pacifist's point of view, any violence risks more of it. As most of us are not pacifists, we may view Bennett's comments as misguided but the man's age and his lack of command of the facts say more about why he spoke as he did. Those who would make more out of this than it is are doing the man a great disservice.
