Pitbull responds to Lohan lawsuit - with an invite

Lindsay Lohan is suing Pitbull for using her name in the song “Give Me Everything,” and the rapper has responded in a surprising way – with an invitation to the VMAs!

Pitbull addresses the lawsuit in a video posted to his website, Planet Pit. In it, the star says he was “very surprised” to find out about the legal action being taken against him, which he first assumed was some type of joke. But interestingly, the rapper isn’t bitter. Pitbull tells the interviewer that he “supports” La Lohan’s career.

Pitbull also clarifies the lyrics to his song. He says the song goes, “Got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan” not “locked up like Lindsay Lohan.” The former would imply that she’s in control, while the latter would be referencing her jail stint.

Pitbull adds that the hit song would, if anything, “help someone’s career,” rather than hurt them. “We mention people’s names all the time,” he points out. The rapper also notes that he finds the lawsuit ironic, considering the “positive” nature of the song and his album.

Pitbull will be performing the song at the VMAs, and “extends an invitation” to Lindsay, saying “hopefully she can come with me… and we can figure this out.”

However, it doesn’t seem like Linds is taking the olive branch. A rep for Lohan tells CNN, "We're not going to respond to this publicity stunt. You can quote me."

The rapper may have anticipated Lindsay's attitude. He says of the suit, “The next step is up to the attorneys, the judges, the courts."

Well she better pull out her iPod and start downloading some music because plenty of rappers use Lindsay Lohan's name and none of it is in a good way... She should start suing comedians and talk show host too... everyone seems to get a laugh or two off of her lately. Not to mention I am sure that she did more harm to her image than pit bull could have ever done. period.

After all the serious damage she's done to herself... Lohan must be hard-up for money. Like Pittbull says, there's nothing negative about the song or the use of her name. The only publicity stunt is Lohan's lawsuit. Her name being in that song may not help her career but it's not going to hurt it. It's certainly not the reason anyone would buy the song/CD. Lindsay Lohan, Lindsay Lohan, Lindsay Lohan. Bite me then sue me and everyone who HAS said or printed something negative about you.

A rep for Lohan tells CNN, "We're not going to respond to this publicity stunt. You can quote me."

LOL, the only publicity stunt here is the one Lindsay and her people created over this. Seriously what a bunch of losers. Just because Pitbull showed class, treated this lightly and reacted the opposite way they were expecting... they cry publicity stunt????

The sad reality is that Lohans career has been flushed away long ago. She's had plenty of opportunities to make a come back and better herself. But that will NEVER happen now and she knows it. And its her own fault for failing at life. All that's left is for her to go after those in the industry that are actually successful and try to leech of them. I am not normally so cynical about celebrities, but this is the final straw for me, I've had enough of her. I officially wish she gets hit by a bus, or dies of an overdose. Why Winehouse and not her??

No. He shouldn't have. There are many, many references to people in songs who never gave permission. It has been done a thousand times before and it will never stop. Lohan is just desperate for money, work and attention.

Um.. you do not have to get permission to say people's names... He didn't say anything negative about her and if he did so what this is America you can say what you want. NOT TO MENTION if he wants to say Lindsay Lohan went to jail is he stating a FACT or is he making something up? He should make another song referencing her trying to sue him just for spite... What? He wouldn't be lying...:0)

When all you've got is news stories about all of your legal trouble and you've got to come up with ridiculous lawsuits like a toddler throwing a tantrum...your career is down the toilet. She should be grateful her name was used and leave it at that. Quit acting like a spoiled child.

Lilo is so hard up she is willing to do anything for her name to stay in the gossip circles. If she is not talked about she fears the will be forgotten, which she would... She should be happy that she is still popular enough to even have someone like Pitbull say her name.....
Pitbull you are the man.. Great song and album too!

You can't sue someone over definition of character as it's not against the law to state a fact.

If she persues this suit she's a loser & will lose! At 25 she's young enough to know what "locked up" means, that it's a compliment, but it seems she's also "hard up" & needs $$! If I was in her position I'd work with Pit & get my groove back, not take him to court to try to take his $$!!

Lindsay has no legal basis to sue Pitbull at all. I'm surprised this even made it to the news.

First off, to successfully sue for defamation in the United States, you have to prove that the speaker lied. I hate to break it to Lindsay, but Pitbull didn't say anything about her that was untrue. That alone should get it tossed out of court at the deposition.

Secondly, while it's not an absolute requirement, in order to win a defamation case you usually have to prove malice : a deliberate intention to hurt the other party's reputation or business interests with your words. That's clearly not present here either.

Setting a precedent for a valid lawsuit over one throwaway line in one song opens a Pandora's Box of possibility to sue every rapper, comedian, and parody magazine/website of the last thirty years. How many parodies pass by every day without a word? Chris Rock didn't become famous keeping his mouth shut about other celebrities. MAD Magazine hasn't survived fifty years by being politically correct. Pop culture references are pretty standard stuff with a broad subsection of American entertainers.

Lindsay has to learn – if you court the kind of fame and media attention she courts, you become part of the public discourse. Courting fame makes both good and bad opinions of you fair game. Roll your dice and take your chances.

The suit is not for defamation. It is for unauthorized use of her name for commercial gain.
