Karl Lagerfeld: It's hard to have ugly kids

In the new issue of Interview Magazine, designer Karl Lagerfeld chats it up with former French Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld. The fashion big shots commiserate about wealth ("You're in your jet—you don't have a grip on reality. We can lose touch with reality quite easily.”), and being oppressed by jobs.

And then there are Lagerfeld's views on kids.

Regarding Roitfeld's children, Julia and Vladimir, Karl comments: "You're also lucky because they are very beautiful. It would have been difficult to have an ugly daughter.”

Luckily, the former Chanel guru was spared the horrors of raising an unattractive daughter, as he is childless.

“If I were a woman, I would love to have lots of kids,” Lagerfeld opines. “But for men, I don't believe in it."

In other words, he's just an IDIOT.

If it's really all that "difficult" to have an ugly child then obviously this nit-wit's mother has had a terrible time of it.

He looks like a cross between a cartoon character and a Holocaust survivor.

Another eccentric who doesn't make any sense. First, it is not worse to have an ugly daughter than an ugly son. There is more to a woman than her "looks". Second, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What is beautiful to one, is ugly to another, blah blah. Its just that Hollywood and the like attempts to define beauty for all of us, which is pure BS. Third, to say that having lots of children for women makes sense, but doesn't make sense for men, doesn't make sense at all. Especially when women and men marry each other and have families. What good does it do for a woman to have a lot of babies that she can't support by herself? If you're a designer, be a designer. If you're an actor, be an actor. If you're a singer, be a singer. Keep your political, lifestyle and other opinions to yourself.

It is a sad state of affairs when the only type of beaty we focus on is outter beauty. The real beauty a person poses is the one within and that is the kind of beauty that counts in the end. This superficial beauty that everyone is obessed with nowadays is what is wrong with society. The only type of beauty i have ever known that makes a difference is inner beauty, that is the only type of beauty that makes a difference in peoples lives and betters the world. You think had mother Teresa been obessed with outter beauty she would have taken the time to help so many people and make a difference. Or what about Martin Luther King, do you think think he was worried about his outfit or what his hair looked like when he was making a difference. I truely feel sorry for Mr. Lagerfeld for he does not know the meaning of true beauty and happiness, he basis his happinesss and material and superficial things that in the end he will not be able to take with him.

As someone who others might consider 'unattractive' I have to say he has a point, as much as it hurts me to say. He didn't say ugly people are lesser people or that they deserve it.. all he says is it's difficult and that's the truth. Society judge people by their looks. More so women than men but men are not excluded. I have never in my entire life have any women swoon or even give me a second look. I have to work Society is shallow but you are dealt the hand you are dealt. Some people are born beautiful some are not. Some are born into wealth and some are born into extreme poverty. It is what it is.

Evidently Ms. Lagerfeld doesn't realize the hurt that he can cause with his statements. When I was little, I was not cute or pretty at all – my Mother was gorgeous. People would look at me and wonder how it could happen that I didn't look like her. Anyway, to make a long story short, I grew out of that phase and am happily single, attractive, well educated, have a great job, own two homes, and travel extensively. After you're grown up you learn that without brains, beauty isn't worth much.

Heck, I have 20 year olds telling me I'm old and I'm 33 years younger than this guy. I don't know, this guy has a skewed view of the world ... and most of the comments here just fall to his level.

    Check his early photo's here.

If you look there you will see Karl is not bad looking. He is an older man and a well known fashion designer. We should not judge vanity in that way though. See kids already have complexes and it's not enough that people treat them bad at school and stuff. Perhaps he means in today's judgmental world. Which is certainly is. Somethings are best left unsaid but we don't know his frame of mind at the same time so judging him is sort of silly too.

the thing is..he lives in the most superficial and fantasy structured industry in the world....they are all like that in that business. I have a friend who is very involved in the high fashion industry. I have been to the parties, backstage at fashion week shows etc and it is an evil evil place to me. Constant criticizing and cutting down, hateful personalities, and the moment someone walks away they get talked about behind their back. Those people are COMPLETELY built into their own fantasy world where beauty is the final "IT"...i cant imagine living my life around those people.....but that is the way they look at the world....if its not beautiful, they can't be bothered.

I believe Mr Lagerfeld is still with Chanel, so he's not the "former Chanel guru". In the Interview piece he is quoted as saying "'I don't want to compare myself to you, but it's like at Chanel, I can do what I want, when I want, where I want. And that's because I am worth more when I'm free. I think it's the same thing for you.'" further evidence that he's still with the historic house.

I was a funny looking kid and grew up to be an entirely average-looking adult (at my best). But I always had friends, many suitors, married an exceptional (and incidentally very attractive man), got a PH.D from an Ivy League school, had kids who grew up to be kind and successful and retired at 55 to do good works and live on my millions. I would much rather be smart than beautiful -frankly I would rather be simply a solid, nice person than be beautiful. My appearance has never had much impact on my self-esteem, and I make a concerted effort not to think in those terms about other people. Even though thoughts about beauty/ugliness may creep in from time to time, I don't think they are useful constructions in living a life. I think that preoccupation with appearance limits people and narrows their lives and loves. It also hurts their children. So as classless and insensitive as Karl can be, I feel a certain sympathy with a man who is so diminished by his beliefs and manners.

I was very pretty and managed to have gorgeous kids but we always said __better to be fascinating than to be "beautiful" why? looks are fleeting–even if an accident. acne, skin diseases, the sun or the wind do not ruin your face, time most certainly will change it–better to have something deeper and more lasting–like intelligence–the ability to converse on any subject and the skill to engage others and enjoy life.

But it's NOT shallow; it's a natural human desire to have your offspring be attractive. Part of it is imprinted into our brains; the rest of it is largely a result of living in a society where lookism is a very definite and deciding factor in how we are treated by others, etc. There's nothing in the world wrong with wanting, hoping, or wishing that your children will be born beautiful.

Trust me, if I was Karl Lagerfeld, I'd be somewhere doing something a helluva lot more interesting than talking to the unwashed masses on CNN's message boards.

Yeah, just what I thought. He threatened to ban you from the corporate closet full of free clothes. Is he standing over your shoulder dictating the responses or are you thinking of these yourself? Maybe you should as some of the "unwashed masses" for help.

You sound like a brainless, fashion obsessed dandy by the way. Why so grouchy this morning? Did you get ketchup on your favorite Armani tie?

Nah, I'm not grouchy. Just sleepy, I guess. I'm just getting tired of your mom always trying to call me collect from prison.

Hey, Lagerfeld, did it ever occur to you that the ugly kids don't exactly enjoy it, either? Those of us born with less than perfect looks can at least take comfort in the fact that we're human enough not ot make suchh a comment about anyone else.

I'm sure Lagerfeld is well aware of how harshly society will sometimes treat someone with average or less than average looks. Take a quick look through this thread, and you'll see your angry message to Lagerfeld is preaching to the choir.

"You're also lucky because they are very beautiful. It would have been difficult to have an ugly daughter.”

Get off your high horses, you schmucks. You know darn well that none of you would want your daughter to be ugly either. Lagerfeld didn't say anything you haven't thought a thousand times yourself. He didn't say ugly kids don't deserve to be loved; he just pointed out the fact (and, yes, it is a fact) to Roitfeld that pretty people often benefit in many ways throughout their lives that less pretty people do not.

Actually, Sandra, in this day and age of the beautiful people, Sencho is right. No one wants an ugly child, or a child who is perceived to be homely. It's a dirty, little secret most of us keep to ourselves though.

“If I were a woman, I would love to have lots of kids,” Lagerfeld opines. “But for men, I don't believe in it."

What the heck does THAT mean?! Women cannot get pregnant without a man being involved somehow.... Stupid idiot.

    • Sencho

So, you aren't bright enough to understand simple English, but Lagerfeld's the idiot... no.

What he obviously stated is that he would have entertained the idea of having lots of kids if he was a single woman, but that he doesn't think single men should have a mess of kids around. He's doesn't expand on his reasoning, but that's what he meant.

Sencho, I don't see Lagerfeld specifying 'single' anywhere, so I don't know where you've got your interpretation from.

I'm pretty sure that as he didn't expand on his reasoning, you cannot tell us what he meant, as his sentence was not actually "simple English" – unless you have some psychic power.

But Karl stated he'd hate to have an ugly daughter. As a woman I understand his meaning. An ugly man who gathers worldly power is an aphrodisiac to women. But an ugly woman, well, with or without power has a hard road to tow.
And that's why ugly girls/women must devlop attractive skills, like good convo, great fashion sense, etc. oh, and a
very good sense of humor. Becomiong an extraordinary lover helps greatly, too. I know whereof I speak. And Karl,
gay or not, is handsome, and talented and sartorially pulchritudinous. So there.

David in Corpus.......more than likely only you and the childrens mother think they are beautiful. And that is perfectly normal that parents think they have the most beautiful children in the world. But you must be realistic and understand that probably no one else thinks they are beautiful. So next time you are looking at someone elses kids and think crude things about them......their parents are probably saying the same about yours.
