MTV to debut plus-size reality star

There’s a new MTV starlet in town, but this isn't just another Lauren Conrad.

The network will debut a new reality series in October, and while it features a familiar premise – girl moves to a big city to pursue fashion – newcomer Chelsea Settles is not only battling the transition,  but also her weight.  She weighs 324 lbs.

The network describes Settles, 23, as "a new kind of MTV heroine.” The show will follow the recent college grad as she arrives in Los Angeles from a small town near Pittsburgh, and will chronicle issues like her long-distance boyfriend, social phobias and weight loss.

The docu-drama appears to be a viewer-friendly blend of reality dramas like “The Hills" and weight loss programs like “I Used to be Fat” or “The Biggest Loser.”

“Chelsea Settles” premieres with a special hour-long episode on Oct. 11 at 11:00 p.m ET, and you can watch the trailer here. Will you tune in?

I don't understand the hatred in these comments. In the show, she's actively trying to lose weight and yet still she's being attacked. The show isn't promoting fat-acceptance. Chelsea Settles isn't out there saying to obese people that they should keep getting bigger. She's on a diet and exercise plan, apparently. Isn't that a good thing? Why not applaud her efforts to get healthy rather than ignore the fact that she's even trying? I'm somewhat of a health and fitness nut myself and I think some of you should be ashamed. Instead of bashing a fat person for being fat, why not offer to walk around the track with them every day or take them to Whole Foods and build them a healthy salad?

Yet another know-it-all who doesn't even believe in psychiatry. I'm now a vegan! I was very easy to go lacto-ovo vegetarian and then vegan because I don't even like meat/eggs. Prior to going veg, I've eaten chicken and fish once or twice a week, beef once or twice a month. I did not and do not fry my foods. I don't eat fast food and I don't go to restaurants; I cook at home. Nothing fried. I'm lactose intolerant. I don't drink milkshakes. I don't drink anything with sugar in it. No sugary soda. I used to drink lots of Diet Coke but I've given that up in favor of plain filtered tap water in the last six months!

You've cherry picked from my post. You do not know anything about the people you are bashing other than our size and to assume you do is the height of arrogance. Stop with the juvenile stereotypes. Grow up.

Is my weight okay? HELL NO! That's why I'm working every day of my life to change it before I do end up with diabetes or high blood pressure or another obesity-related illness! Does my weight make me somehow subhuman? I don't think so.

Before I opened the article, I figured when it said 'plus-size', the girl would be like 5'9" and about a size 6 or 8 and be something like 140 or 150 lbs. No, I do not think sizes below 10 should be considered 'plus size'. However, when I saw that the girl is 23 yrs. old and weighs 324 lbs., I thought, "wow, that is not plus size either; that's morbidly obese". No offense to Miss Settles at all but that is beyond "a few extra pounds". It made me think of a girl I worked with who was about the same age, about 5'4", and weighed a little more than 324 lbs. She had bariatric surgery and within a year, she was below 200 lbs. I have no idea what she looks like now because she moved and I have not been able to find her again. She's probably anorexic now because she moved to southern California, land of fruits and twigs and I'm not talking about the food. Anyway, I hope Ms. Settles gets on a healthy diet and exercise routine so she can get to a healthy weight. Good luck.

She is not "big". She is not "thick". She is not "BBW". She does not "have a few extra pounds".

It is not accurate to call her fat. Or, for that matter, obese. She is MORBIDLY OBESE. Dangerously overweight.

To use these euphemisms like "big" is simply to intentionally minimize the severity of her weight problem.

This show, like many others about obese people, is just a thinly disguised way of ridiculing the fat people. If you think about it, you will see that they are the only group left in America that can still be mocked. Any other group could legally call ridicule a "hate crime". Just cover up the mocking with a thin layer of "concern for their health" and let the laughter begin.

I'm sorry...were you all watching the same trailer that I was? She is not getting paid to force a mainstream media audience to accept "fat" people.
This is a story of a young woman from rural America, who chases her dream. The trailer even shows her working towards a healthy weight . Did you just disregard that entire angle of the show, so that you could still fit in negative comments about her body, and the image she is portraying?

No, Lee S; the biggest problem in our country is hateful, ugly, uncivil, ill-mannered jerks like you and others of your ilk; You will get back from those of us who are brave enough to deal with you what you give us. You do have a problem: you have a fat, ugly mouth. If you don't like the way we look; it seems you have a personal problem. Deal with it, because we don't care what you think, and we are not going away. I'm sure you are no raving beauty, and even if you were, your ugly mouth would ruin the impression. You must be a miserable person.

I think she is beautiful!! It will be nice to see a woman who is not a twig. She's smart as well...a college GRAD!!! Who knows, maybe she gained the weight while attending college. Whatever the reason, I do worry about her weight. It is not about looks, it is about health. I have always stuggled with my weight and I fear diabetes because it runs in my family. She should lose weight for health reasons, not for any other reason. I don't know what she should weigh because I am not a doctor, but that just seems like a bad number. Of course, what if she is 7' tall? Either way, I wish her luck on the show and luck in her future endeavors!!!

Everybody KNOWS what it takes to be thin, right? Right.... I hope you can feel the sarcasm. Think about this for a minute. How do you learn something? It gets taught to you, right? You learn from parents, friends, and school. Well what if your parents are obese? With 2 obese parents you are practically guaranteed to turn out obese. School doesn't teach diet and least not when I was in school. And friends? Well, after I tried eating how my skinny friends ate I just got heavier and heavier. After a while you just accept (right or wrong) that you are "meant" to be heavy. People like to throw around the word "moderation" when describing how fat people need to start eating to lose the weight. It would be much easier if the word wasn't so damned subjective! You have to have skills and knowledge to lose weight. And then you need encouragement, perseverence, determination, support, and more will power than you ever thought you could have. I'm down 90 pounds so far with about 30 to go. Every day is a struggle. Go find a terrorist or child molester to hate, not the fat man or woman next door!

Whatever MTV... Make it seem like it's OK to be overweight. Moat overweight people make the choice to be overweight and indulge in food and not exercise. This is not what America needs. Neither is a skinny twig. How about just make a healthy sized woman for once. It's always to the extreme.

AND TO THE IDIOTS WHO ARE SAYING THAT THIS SHOW IS SAYING ITS OKAY TO BE FAT.... have you watched that preview for the show on She's like crying half the time and getting called (in numberous ways) by strangers that shes fat. Her Doc tells her shes needs to lose weight, shes embarrassed all the time but still tries SO hard to hold her head up high. This show is NOT saying its okay to be overweight but that overweight ppl arent all couch potatoes who dont care if anything great happens to them. If anything this show also displays how Fkd up and cruel ppl can be towards strangers... just bc they are overweight. WHICH DOESNT DIRECTLY/PHYSICALLY AFFECT THEM (not getting into the health care costs aspects ppl) And inolerant ppl should be ashamed of themselves and their actions... their mothers would be embarrassed to know how destructively their chilldren offend others.

I would be willing to bet.. that woman goes farther in life than most do. For those picking on her weight – there was this famous runner that died... of a heart attack. (James Fixx). Dr. Atkins, founder of the diet – died of a heart attack. I think people should live and let live. It's very shallow to sit in judgement and call someone names when they cannot turn, observe you – and call you names. Would you say these same words to her face? With your parents sitting there? With someone you respect sitting there? This young lady is much MORE then her girth. I think some of you really need to examine your own life – because when you can sit there and call someone a cow, an make fun of their weight, you ... seem to be the one with issues.

  99. I'm not crying

I have an eating disorder. I currently weigh about what this lady weighs. I'm prepared for the hateful comments sure to come my way. At my heaviest weight I was over 350. I've been on Weight Watchers since May and in June decided to go vegan; I've lost 33 lbs so far and finally found a plan that will work for me. It's not that I never tried to lose weight, it's that every time I'd end up binging and give up and end up gaining all I lost back plus more. I'm disgusted by my body. I hate the way I look and feel. How did I get this way? I got this way from not caring. I've had depression my entire adult life. Food was medication. My drug of choice. Believe it or not I did not get this fat from stuffing my face full of Twinkies and chips. I ate that kind of garbage very infrequently. And, no, I didn't eat McDonalds (I hate fast food garbage). Before WW I thought there was something metabolically wrong with me because it was so hard for me to lose weight. Now I'm sure that I can lose with this plan because it doesn't feel like I'm dieting at all.

I'm sure lots of you think I'm disgusting and subhuman and I get it. I knew I was fat and disgusting to many people even when I weighed 180 or 220...

We are human beings. We have feelings, believe it or not. Apathy, Depression, Antidepressants, Anxiety, Food addiction and other things helped to pack this weight onto me. I WILL get my body back in shape again and I won't be burdening you taxpayers with my obesity-related diseases I'm certain to develop in time if I don't shed the weight. I'm going to start the Couch-to-5K running program as soon as my knees can safely support my weight. (as soon as I lose enough not to cause me serious injury when I run) My ultimate goal other than reaching my goal weight and maintaining that weight, is to run a marathon or half-marathon one day. I WILL obtain this. Five years from now no one that I meet will ever believe I was ever this big. Please be kind, people. Not all of us stuff our faces with pie all day long and not all of us are okay with being obese.

This lady has a beautiful face and will be a knockout when she gets that weight off. I'm nowhere near as pretty as she is. I wish you didn't hate me. You don't have to think I'm hot - I'm not, I look gross right now. But I'm still a human being. I'm not a pig.

      * to clarify, I have binge eating disorder or compulsive overeating disorder. I could sit down to eat a normal meal and I would never feel full like everyone else does. I could eat 4 times what everyone else eats before I'd even start to feel full. The mechanism that triggers the sensation of fullness and satisfaction is broken in me, so I honestly thought i wasn't eat all that much to get myself so large.

Food addiction? Maybe, another made up American liberal excuse for you to think youre not at fault. Hey, guess what, its no ones fault but yours. If someone is addicted to anything else tobacco, crack, whatever, its THEIR fault they got addicted, and its THEIR responsibility to fix it. Everything else is just an excuse. And Jeff, I bet you could stand to lose a few pounds there too. Put down the fork lift full of bigmacs for three months and go outside and walk around and drink water when you feel the need to eat. Dont buy junk food. Its caled self control. All of the enabling factors for obesity can be eliminated by the person afflicted with the disease, Ill reiterate, anything else is just a lame excuse and an example of laziness.

Stultzlee, where did I ever say it wasn't my fault? The fact that I have better control over my eating now proves that I am capable, on the right plan, of moderating my intake and losing weight. I've gone vegan, in part to reverse the damage I've already done! I have been diagnosed by my psychiatrist with binge eating disorder/compulsive overeating. I was aware I had a problem with food for many years prior to this diagnosis and for that reason kept no junk food or frozen prepared foods in my home.

I suppose you don't believe in psychiatry either? I've had depression my whole adult life, beginning when I weighed 125lbs in my early 20's... Is that my fault also?

Jeff, thank you so much for your kind words. They brought tears to my eyes.

I want to applaude u for sharing your storey, in fact i have a very similar one. Most people don't understand how badly eating disorders effect the body long term. I was anorexic for years, at 5'10 was as low as 90lbs, at 18 yrs old. Got help and started to realize what i was doing. Unfortunatly the damage to my body was already done, It no longer knew how to process good foods, and was too used to going long periods of time without sustinance. As a result, it stores everything, good food, bad food, sugars the lot. Just in case. Now almost 12 yrs later I am a Large woman, who still suffers from eating disorders, I have doctors struggling to figure out how to fix the problems i caused myself. I eat healthy, on a very strict diet, exerise daily, am far from any kind of lazy but I can promise you that you would look at me and think all of those things. I suffer from depression and anxiety BUT have learned to love me and appriciate the fact that i am beauitful, big and beautiful. I am sick and tired of peoples assumptions of my lifestyle and insults that do not help, if you dont understand and know the person your judging u have no right to judge. Also for the record, Every single bone skinny person I know quits long before me when it comes to endurance and hard work. Its not someones size that matters its the heart that will always show a better person.

It's so easy for people who have never had a struggle with their weight to sit back and call names and make jokes. Wow. I was always curvy, as soon as I hit puberty and got DD boobs and my mother's wretched hips. All while eating practically nothing and running and playing sports and being active. Fast forward to DDD boobs, about 160-170, walking EVERYWHERE, going to the gym, eating salad, etc. Fast forward 10 years...diagnosed with RA, put on prednisone...goodbye metabolism. I can literally eat nothing but CELERY and drinking nothing but water for a week and lose no weight. (and yes, I tried it. Made me sick, and I actually gained a pound!) Even when I'm not actively on predinsone, it's no use. I've tried every diet out there, and I eat pretty healthy, and reasonable portions. So I'm 290. Am I disgusting fat pig with no self-control? My exercise is limited by what my joints will actually do on a given day. SOme days getting out of bed is more painful than I can handle. Others, I can walk miles. (albeit slowly) I was still at a healthy weight when I was diagnosed, so you can't blame the weight on that one. You NEVER know what' s going on with people. Judging them is NEVER okay.

I've read some of the comments on this post and I am so sad and disgusted. This story hits extremely close to home for me. I am 5'8" and at my heaviest was 330 pounds. Over the past few years I have dropped my weight down to 168 pounds using a combination of diet and exercise, but frankly I never had the self-esteem or gumption that this young woman exhibits. As a result, even as a smaller person I carry around tons of low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. The bottom line is that weight is only one factor that affects happiness. I am impressed to see this girl believing in herself and following her dreams. It's something I wouldn't have had the courage to do, and still wouldn't. I wish a role model like this was around when I started my weight loss journey.

I'm glad to see an obese reality tv star – from the comments made by some on this board, it is clear that a majority of people need to be educated about this disorder. Obesity is a fast growing disease in America. I'm so sick of hearing... "How could they let themselves get that way..." or "This is what happens when you don't take care of yourself..." Those comments are made by ignorant fools. Obesity is a disease, most often attributed to genetics, mental health issues, and the eating disorder known as "binge eating", and often leads to feelings of self hate, anxiety, depression, and death. No one "chooses" to be obese!

Genetics haven't changed over the past 30 years while obesity has exploded. That's lifestyle, pure and simple.

Genetics might mean that some people will never be thin even with a perfect lifestyle. But we're talking maybe 25 or 30 lbs. overweight, not 75+ lbs.

Whenever writer prints someone's weight in a story for any reason, I think they should have to print their own weight just to the side of their byline. By the way, is her weight to the pound relevant? Why don't they print Snookie's IQ in every article about Jersey Shore. Seems she and the rest of her clan have quite a handicap of their own, no?

ridiculous to normalize obesity. Its as dangerous as drug abuse. Why don't they follow a crackhead around? Fat is not a protected class. It is the reason your health care is so expensive. 1/3 of the country is obese and they clog the hospitals with an assortment of ailments. Go to any housing project and you'll see obese people on food stamps. We should shun gluttony, not celebrate it.

It is a little publicity for a netweork that is generally agreed to be in decline. The concept of having a large person featured in a reality show is not new. If you flip through the channels on any given evening there are shows called "I weigh 600 pounds" and "We lost a ton" on TLC or one of the other Human Interest networks. 324 pounds doesn't even sound morbidly obese to me. It's to say how I feel about the concept, because my little sister (28) has approximately the same dimensions, and I certainly feel sympathy for her plight. On the other hand, I (39) am very active and thin, so I share some of the predjudices expressed in these comments. It is so easy to throw rocks at others. The benefit of reality shows, and more recently the internet, to humanity escapes me. It's like an army of paper tigers, growling impotently at their reflections.

Per MTV, we must all extend understanding to Teen Moms (when we should be encouraging them to preserve their youth and get pregnant). Now we have to celebrate and embrace morbid obeisty rather than lovingly encourage the morbidly obese to seek help in getting to a healthier state. MTV is disgusting beyond reproach.

When I saw this headline I got really excited because being overweight myself, I'm always excited about curvier girls being out in the spotlight..... but to be honest, I'm not sure what to think. 324 isn't exactly "plus size" it's obese so I'm really hoping this show spends time focusing on a healthy lifestyle and getting fit. This young woman is gorgeous and I think she could become a role model if she chooses to take control of this disease and better her life. I say this coming from a place of love and understanding because I too used to be a lot heavier than I am now and can say from experience that there are so many factors contributing to obesity and I understand, it's not just about "not being lazy and eating less," there are so many more parts to starting a new healthy lifestyle. No matter how you look at it 324 is not healthy, no matter how beautiful or happy you are, weight takes a heavy toll on the body. 90lbs lighter, I'm happier, more active, have more elf confidence and I've found that I've started doing better in school and in social settings. A healthy lifestyle leads to a healthier and happier self and I really hope she is able to show people this through her new show.

Why does calling a fat person fat equal being mean or hating on them? If she's fat she's fat. The people who consider it mean to call her fat probably have fat issues themselves and the excuse of her trying to lose weight serving as an inspiration to other fat people is a joke. There are tons(excuse the pun) of weight loss shows on tv and people continue to get fat in rapid numbers. A "normal" sized woman is 120-140 lbs regardless of what the new majority of obese women say. Just because fat is the new majority doesn't make it normal. There's nothing normal about anyone except for an NFL lineman weighing 324lbs.

A 140 lb. woman could be fat if she's short & sedentary and a 170 lb. woman could be in great shape if she's tall and athletic. Gabby Reece, the volleyball star and model, weighs something like 170 lbs. and she's not at all fat.

I think it's admirable that this woman is willing to let her experience be chronicled on nation wide television. The article stated that she has some social phobias...kudos to her for putting these out there and dealing with them. I agree, she is overweight and, again BIG kudos, is trying to lose weight. We see these types of reality shows all the time: on Intervention, for example, someone addicted to a drug may want to change this and open his or her own business (for talk's sake). This woman is trying to change and move forward with her dreams. Food addiction is a real illness. We don't know all the reasons for her weight problems but if we assume it is a food addiction then it is certainly admirable to see her trying to get help. Shame on those of you who can't support someone who is working so hard towards a goal. We all have faults, some impact our lives more than others. For those of you who support her, awesome! It is nice to see society cheering for fellow citizens.

There are thousands of fat people who gladly accept being fat and shows like this one promote that because for every fat person who tries to lose weight because of her story there will be a hundred fat people who see her getting a show as a success and figure if she can do it at 324 so can they. This is America and the bottom line is money. People will see her making money being fat and figure they can do the same. Just like TV that shows stupid people getting rich spawn more shows with stupid people like Jersey Shore. This show is just another step in the "fatification" of America where being fat is seen as normal and more and more shows with fat people continue to pop up. We've already got Mike and Molly, The Parkers and now this. The fat hits just keep on coming.

People should be accepted for who they are and not how they look. However, obesity is going to break the health care system because of all the associated health problems–most notably diabetes which then leads to heart disease, kidney disease and eye disease. Looking down at someone because they are fat is not a good thing–neither is promoting obesity by MTV.

In my opinion, obesity is a result of incompatibility between human technology, environment, and once useful genetics. Take away all technology and return each human to his/her place of genetic origin and the problem of obesity will probably disappear. If a genetic sequence evolved to survive in a particular environment, then that is the environment people should be seeking in order to balance themselves out. But of course, that isn't going to happen. Currently, our technology and current environments are changing at a much faster pace than genetic evolution in comparison with other animal species. Genetic technology is probably the best bet in solving the obesity problem. This can be managed in one of two ways; selective breeding or by genetic engineering. Gene therapy, if it exists for the obese, would still just be a temporary solution. Dieting, willpower, and exercise is also just a temporary solution.

John, you are right that she is beautiful. And it seems that she really does want to get down to a healthy weight. A proper diet and exercise can help her keep that glow. I just hope she has been evaluated by a psychologist. As we found this week from the Housewives series, most of those reality shows are brutal in what they suggest for stories of the week and the way they are edited. (I have to admit that the Bridezillas, fat or thin, all are so nasty to everyone, special editing can't make them look much worse.) She may need lots of support from family and friends to get through any nastiness. Let's hope she doesn't bother to read the rude comments. Skinny or thin does not equal healthy always. There are thin or average weight people that have diabetes, high blood pressure. And it is sad that people assume when someone is overweight or obese that they do not eat right or exercise. I am overweight, I go to the gym, I eat less than my thin friends, I do active activities, prepare healthy meals but I still can't get the weight off. I do not have diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. It is sad that people think that if someone is large they just sit around eating a bucket of chicken and a box of donuts. And for the insurance premiums, fat people pay them too not everyone that is fat depends on the government for health care.

  201. You deserve an old fashion tongue lashing

Dag. These comments are deplorable. You dont like something? Dont deal with it. Go off on your own but do no sit here and make judgements about this woman without knowing her. First of all HAS ANYONE SEEN that other reality show about that other woman, "RUBY"? So take the racial bias out of it that has nothing to do with it. There are thin, healthy and otherwise black women and obese white women. Secondly, why shouldnt she get a show? Just because she's heavy she doesnt deserve one? That's crazy. No one said anything about Drew Carey and Mimi and they were a heck of alot worse to look at than this young woman. Lastly, yes oftentimes weight can be attributed to trauma experienced or mild to extreme mental health issues. So can drug use, alcoholism and all types of abuse. I bet you guys didnt have a problem with Charlie Sheen having his show or him being a total wackjob. Just because she is possibly self medicating with food instead of with meth and cocaine doesnt make her less worthy of sympathy and/or empathy. Be nicer to each other people....dag. You dont know anything until you have walked in someone's shoes and if you are not intelligent enough to understand that, then you need not open your mouth and show your true ignorance. The nasty comments on here should surprise me, but sadly, don't. When I was young and *healthy* , I stayed thin by barely eating, exercising to extremes, and vomiting. Now I'm older and disabled. I can't excercise because of my health, and on a fixed income can only afford one meal a day. I ruined my teeth & esophagus a long time ago, and can't risk vomiting anymore. So now I am obese, due to genetics, a poor diet, and medications, and feel so much hatred and disgust from society, that I basically hide in my apartment, and only go out for doctors appointments. Those of you on here making hateful comments and jokes should be ashamed of yourselves. I'd like to think you just don't realize how much damage you can do to a persons self esteem, but in reality, I suspect that you probably do know, and just don't care.

The venom and hate in these (and so many other articles) comments amount to nothing more than class warfare. While so many people claim to hate overweight people, what they actually hate is the poor who have fewer healthy options (in a consumables market built on mass production and the motto of empty calories and barrel scrapings equalling higher profits at cheaper prices) than those with disposable incomes. I have yet to witness anyone who voices this venom against 'fat America' who really wants to see anything done to solve the nation's health problems, or see people struggling to lose weight helped or inspired. Why? Because then they would not be able to tell the difference between themselves and 'their lessers' by sight alone, would no long be physically set above and have to actually work their brains to prove themselves better than the next guy.

    • Wow...

How much does it cost to go up a flight of stairs or go for a walk around the block? Heck, take the bus to the local mall and walk around there for an hour. Maybe there's a local park somewhere near by, or just lay down on the floor and try thing thing called a push-up. It's not hard (well, at 324lbs a push-up might be) and it's not expensive.

Get a grilled chicken sandwich without a bun, or a salad and skip the croutons and dressing. It's surprisingly easy to eat healthy on the cheap. Heck, really, really easy thing is instead og getting fries with your burger get chicken nuggets. Not the most healthy option, but they are better than fries.

Please stop making lame excuses. The only excuse is lack of will power or the small number of people that actaully have a medical issue.

Just to be clear here, I've got no problem with fat people. I'm a fat person. I also accept that I am what I am. I choose to play video games an not go do something more active. This is not forced on me by McD's on Sony. It's not because of my income or because Capt'n Crunch is so much better than any veggie on Earth (OK, that may actually have something to do with it...).

I assume when they say this is a combo with The Biggest Loser that this woman will be dieting and exercising. It's a good influence for both young girls and women like me who are struggling with weight issues. I'm dieting myself and it helps to see someone else going through the same struggles. It's not easy. The more weight you've gained over the years the harder the journey is. Always helps to have someone to look up to who is in your shoes too.

No tv show anywhere, certainly not a reality show that is impressionable on young viewers, should be glorifying a 23 year old who managed to get herself to over 300 pounds.

While we should be glorifying stick thin models either, surely there are some "normal" girls out there that could have done this show?

Nothing against obese people, but they should NOT be glorified, at all.

Just because you see it as 'glorifying' doesn't mean the rest of the country can't see her struggle and maybe get some inspiration to change themselves. Losing the weight is one of the things that she is doing, so why do you have such a problem with a show that shows other people that it can be done? As for it somehow influencing children, it's up to the parents to control what their little terrors watch but how can seeing a young woman struggle to change her life be somehow worse than playing games where the goal is to kill people?

You people are missing the point. This is a far more realistic reality show idea than any other show I've heard of. Unfortunately we are seeing people in their early 20's at 300+ pounds, maybe a show detailing her efforts to lose weight will be inspirational. I can't help but point out that as a society we've all become incredibly sedentary – we don't let our kids run and play the way we did when I was growing up in the 70's. We don't let them walk anywhere – heaven forbid, we've got to keep them 100% supervised... Sedentary lifestyles starting at an early age coupled with parents and schools dishing out high fat/low nutrition foods result in obesity. Some people are predestined to be thin – most are not. They either work at it – sometimes incredibly hard – or they gain weight. Little by little, and then more and more as the years go by. That doesn't make them bad people – but most of your comments make you out to be.

No, the rest of us have to pick up the tab for your poor decisions.

The girl's weight is not healthy but it does not give you the right to treat her or others like her like crap. THANK GOD... I was one of the un-teased ones at school and still healthy and fit!

Oh. My. God. You are almost 50 years old F and this is how you act? I thought you were an ignorant kid when I read all your previous comments. You may have maintained your weight but were obviously too lazy to work on your maturity. Can't say that about your classmates. They may have "grown up" physically, but based on your comment they at least managed to grow up mentally too.

All women are not skinny, with no asses. The show hasn't been seen yet an already people are talking about this young lady as if she is an animal. Some of the comments on here are just plain rude. Even people like Marilyn Monroe were a size 16 – many of the models in the current fashion world exhibit what is referred to as "herion chic", ie, they look like they've been shooting smack to get that skinny. While I agree that carrying too much weight is bad for one's health on so many grounds, to be abusive towards someone who's "Rubenesque" is nasty, hurtful and totally unnecessary. Chelsea may be a big girl, but I bet she isn't as spiteful as many of the people who are posting here. Which would you rather have – skinny chick with the personality of rabid dog or a plump woman who's kind and thoughtful?

    August 19, 2011 at 3:42 pm | Report abuse |
    • elevatorspork

Clothing sizes are arbitrary numbers- the famed Ms Monroe had a 22 inch waist (quite skinny by modern standards) and her clothes were made to fit her 35-22-35 frame. Essentially- I wouldn't use her as an example of anyone remotely "plump", as she was 118 lbs.

"Heroine chic" is almost completely limited to high fashion. In any case, the answer isn't to replace people who are too skinny with people who are morbidly obese. Believe it or not, there are lots of different weights between 95 and 324lbs, many of which are healthy.

A size 16 for Marilyn is not anywhere near the same as size a 16 is today. The numbers have changed dramatically in 50 years because clothes manufacturers keep cheating them lower to get people to buy their clothes. I call them flattery numbers and Marilyn's size 16 would translate into a size 10/12 today. The size 7/8 dresses I wore in the 60's are now size 3/4's and my weight and measurements are the same as I had in high school 40 years ago. This will give you an idea of what I mean.

I was always UNDER WEIGHT, 5 ft 5inchs tall and 110 lbs. Until 3 years ago I have really bad back and they can't operate on it. I can't stand or walk more than like 20 feet. I can't stand either and now all at once I am over weight, VERY over weight. I have cut down on my food intake to where I get sick from not eating enough. My Dr. and I have talked and talked it's not working. The next thing is I, at 66 years old, my have the gastric bypass surgery to get my weith off. And then again I may just have to suck it up and be heavy I have lots of other healt problems that may make it impossible to have the surgery. So it isn't always a fat chick that needs to suck it up and do something about their weight! Think about being a little kinder to folks that are over weight, YOU don't know why they are over weight.

I agree! People are always putting the blame on outside influences instead of their own lack of self-control. McDonald's ads and chocolate milk in school are not to blame. It’s the people themselves and the enablers they are surrounded by that cause obesity. It’s not "okay" to be 324 pounds. Unfortunately, our tax dollars and medical premiums will be going towards her obscene medical bills one day because of her weight.

It's been shown that some people have different neurological responses to food than others. I'm not saying that an individual isn't still responsible for their own behavior, but it's important for people who only point to will power as being the issue to know that the playing field isn't quite level for everyone. I'm suggesting that it's more of a struggle for some people than others for a very good reason.

I agree with Fred. There are a lot of people who react differently to different things. It's the same reason some people can smoke cigarettes several times and not get addicted, and others are hooked from the very first one. And why some people can drink in moderation their whole lives without issues, while others become alcoholics.

Just because some people react differently to food, perhaps because of emotional issues, doesn't mean they are weak or deserve ridicule. They're human beings, and they deserve compassion.

Reality tv is just a source of cheap programming so the stations don't have to pay real writers, actors, directors, etc. It's contributed heavily to the dumbing down of America. She will lose the weight when she is ready. As someone that grew up in the south on the fattiest food my grandma and momma could make, I can tell you that keeping in shape was a challenge. I went from a size 20 to a size 8. If Chelsea pushes, she can achieve her goal as well. My tips: Eat normal potions, eat like a rabbit (fill up on veggies/fruits), drink plenty of water and avoid "diet" anything, limit or cut out meat (I limit what I eat, but I absolutely will not touch any red meat), and make an exercise routine and stick with it.

It took a few years to get down to my current size and weight, and with Chelsea it will take her some time as well. What is most important is that she sticks with it. I am proof that it can be done. To those with rude and nasty comments, if you've never been overweight and or obese before you should really shut your mouths. This experience has helped me to grow as a person and to become more responsible for myself and my body. I hope this young lady is able to do the same.

I think its a positive direction from the "skinny blonde rich" stereotype. MTV is being realistic. The fact is many women and girls struggle with weight. When we are looking at an obesity epidemic, you can't ignore that people will more readily identify with the challenges Chelsea faces day-to-day than with whatever troubles Lauren or Heidi claim to have gone through.

I applaud this girl for putting herself out there. As we can see from these posts, she may have a challenging road ahead but I have hope she can push through it.

You know what would be edgy and new wave for MTV to do? To actually put MUSIC on their MUSIC... TELEVISION... channel.

And as a person from a somewhat "large" family this girl is not plus sized, she is the clinical definition of morbidly obese. This isn't something to put on display for emulation or to celebrate. Being a comfortable weight/size is one thing, but being a clinical danger of diabetes or heart disease (compounded by her ethnicity) should be the greatest concern. I really hope the focus is her losing weight for the benefit of her health and not conforming to societal image standards.

What a terrible example. 'Plus-size' shouldn't be 300+ pounds, it should be at most 200, and even that's pushing it. Way to skip all the way from one unhealthy extreme to the other, reality tv. Obesity is just as bad as anorexia. If you want a REAL tv show, have a girl who is normal-looking, not particularly attractive nor ugly, and weighs in at a healthy, NORMAL, 150 pounds (depending on height and etc). Except it won't happen, because normal doesn't make for watchable TV, apparently.
