J.Lo heading back to 'American Idol'

“American Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe called into Ryan Seacrest’s radio show on Wednesday to talk about tonight’s “So You Think You Can Dance” finale.... and to drop an “Idol” bomb.

Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson will all be back behind the judges’ table for the show’s eleventh season.

The announcement came after Seacrest asked Lythgoe, “Do you want to go ahead and do the Jennifer announcement here, or are we still waiting?”

To which Lythgoe responded, “I believe we’re still waiting for the official announcement, but I am delighted to say that all three judges, along with the brilliant host of ‘American Idol,’ [are] back for the next season.”

Are you relieved that J.Lo will return?

I can't wait for American Idol to come back again. Last year I enjoyed every single minute of the show. To see the 3 judges the is great, they are funny, kind; they really care for the contestants. It is a family show. In the beginning of the show I laugh so much when the less talented people make full of themselves.
Love you Jennifer, Randy and Steve, you guys rock.
Jennifer you are a class act lady.

Yes, I am very happy the J Lo is returning. J Lo and the other two judges make for an awesome group as judges. Last season was very nice without all the insults and put downs.

Getwilight_suxeze JLo doesn't care about the contestants. All she cares about is unabashedly promoting herself. She'll act in any form or manner to win most of middle America's too trusting disposition.

I think that J-lo should stick with her singing and acting career. I'm not sure who annoyed me more, Steven with his leering stares at the female contestants and weird critiques, or J-lo with her sickening sweet remarks to even the most horrific singers. Even Randy seemed to just go along for the ride. It made for the most boring season yet. They put through plenty of no-talent and let some good ones go. I can't imagine next season being any different. I miss the good old Simon and Paula days.

Get her off the show. She may be pretty, but she epitomizes the "me first" culture in America. She's a terrible role model.

Look for role models in your own family, why expect Hollywood people to be role models, they are there to entertain and not to help others on how to raise your children. Hollywood is make believe. So, get over and smell the coffee.
Jennifer Lopez is a brilliant business lady and it also happens to be beautiful which comes handy in Hollywood.

I will never watch this show again, after the ridiculous last season. Ryan Seacrest is a dweeb, Randy just repeats his lines from past seasons, and there seems to be little correlation between contestant's talent and results. One thing they could change to make voting more realistic is: ONE VOTE PER PERSON (or per phone or per computer IP address). Teeney Bops text zillions of votes for their picks....swamping out any reasonable accounting for true voting. On a more positive note – I thought Stephen and J-Lo added some needed freshness....but not enough to make a difference.

In my opinion (Worh 2cents) AI is great entertainment to be judged by judges who are in the music industry than voted by the fans. Simon..was harsh yet honest. that is not being mean; than there are judges who are kind, honest with constructive judging. I beleive that if anyone wishes to be in the entertainment/ Music Industry they'd better grow thick skin & be prepared to be judged 'cause not only will they be judged..but they're going to be competeing against many with great talent, being seen by so many on TV & VOTED BY THEIR FANS & of course be offered jobs not to mention to have their songs in record labels. ¶I hope y'all enjoy this season as much as I am. With our rising national debt, a failing stock market in which trillions of investors
savings have disappeared, a lack of washington leadership, declining wages,
higher unemployment nationally and a declining standard of living.

Atleast we can rest easy knowing that the standards set by American Idol will no longer impact current economic conditions. What a relief.

In case you haven't noticed, this article is in the ENTERTAINMENT section where it belongs. Go to the POLITICS section if you want to moan and lament about the debt, leadership, wages, etc. I'm pretty sure we're all aware of what's going on in Washington, but like I said, this story is in Entertainment (although the clowns in Congress are pathetically entertaining).

Glad to hear Jennifer will be back. The show was revived last year with it's revamped judging. I've watched it every season and I'm no teeny-bopper, but a senior citizen, who can appreciate young talent. I wore my fingers off voting for Carrie and Daughtry. Didn't always get it right but I got to participate.

You have to start somewhere, she started as a back up dancer and look where she is now, that's a great,
Successful story. Jennifer Lopez was born to be great in music, acting, business woman and mother. In addition, she was born gorgeous.

Seems like she was also born with your lips on her ass based on that last bit of sickening praise. Just because she's successful doesn't mean she deserved it. Hell, Twilight is successful. The Smurfs were successful. Biz Markie was successful, does that make any of those things talented? Absolutely not, it just makes them popular.

Actually Jennifer Lopez turned out to be the better judge of the 3 last year and actually spoke some truth and had some original, authentic criticisms and praise for the contestants. As someone mentioned above, Steven Tyler just said everyone was "beautiful" and rarely said anything constructive...and Randy was totally boring with his broken-record "in it to win it..." line over and over. I wasn't expecting much from the diva herself, but she actually surprised me and won me over as an AI judge. But this show has major issues and the ratings are eventually going to fall. I mean really- Scotty McCreary winning last year?! (= That was a joke.

    August 10, 2011 at 3:58 pm | Report abuse |
    • Michael

Gianni – If Scotty McCreery (correct spelling) shouldn't have won, whom do you think was better, more consistent? No one, in my opinion. He showed the most professionalism, consistency, never went off key and was a humble and likable person, a true artist. It's true, not everyone loves Country music, but genre shouldn't matter here, these other factors do. Scotty, in my opinion, was the most fun to watch and I'll be eagerly awaiting his future releases. He was great live this summer, also. In past years, the best overall artist got overlooked (i.e. Adam Lambert, Crystal Bowersox), but this year, I think America got it right. I think Pia Toscano should have been the runner up, though. She was amazing, if a little stiff in her presentation. She was much better live, however, showing a great deal of improvment in her stage presence. Still, it's all a matter of personal taste, wouldn't you agree?

      August 10, 2011 at 4:16 pm | Report abuse |
    • Dani

If the constestants were actually getting votes based on raw singing talent, Pia should have won it hands down. The best contestant as far as consistency and pure, raw talent was James Durbin, imo. I didn't have Scotty anywhere near the top of the pack. Country is easy to sing so Scotty should have no problem selling cds to the Country music crowd. I'm obviously not a fan of Country music (unless it's Johnny Cash), so I didn't watch the finale.

No one watched this show anymore. It's done. Stick a fork in it. The contestants are all previous season rejects and the judges old and tired looking.

Alex, how can you say that no one watches this show? Millions of people watch and enjoy the show. Millions more download the performances and purchase the CD's by these artists. Hundreds of thousands of people of all ages attend the live Idol tour every summer. I think it's possible that the hyper-critcal tone you take stems from the fact that you might be just a little bit jealous of the talents of others? If they're truly "rejects" and not talented, old and tired, why don't you step up to the plate and show them how to do it better? And while we're on the subject, if you really don't care about it that much, as you say, why take the time to read articles about it and comment, more than once? By the way, my name is not Ryan, it actually is Michael.

      August 10, 2011 at 4:02 pm | Report abuse |
    • Dani

2Michael – "Millions more purchase their CDs." Really? Then they should all be superstars. That statement is an obvious exaggeration. Only a few Idol winners have actually sold more than 1 million CDs. Very few of the winners went on to get top billing and Grammys (Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia for the R&B crowd). The talent is mediocre at best with a few exceptions. Let's see what Simon's show does.

On the contrary, Jennifer Lopez is exciting, she is gorgeous, charismatic, elegant, and mostly she is very kind to the contestants. I enjoy the show very much, before JLo, I stopped watching AI due to Simon's mean spirited comments, but when JLO became a judge I started to watch again.

2Dani – To clarify, I said "millions download the performances and buy the CD's." I didn't say each artist sells millions of CD's. Regarding James' performances, you are incorrect. He was out of pitch a LOT, although he's a truly amazing singer. A fun personality, but I think he was a little stuck on himself. Pia had the purest voice, true, but she showed very little versatility and terrible stage presence, just standing there stiff as a board. They've obviously worked on that with her, as evidenced by her live performances this summer – fantastic. As I have said, it's all a matter of personal opinion. I perform and audition performers for a living, so I have my perspective on it, but it's no more or less valid than anyone else's. I'm glad you took the time to intelligently reply, rather than just criticize my comments.

Some of us watch and really care about American Idol. I am proud to be one of those. It's more than just a T.V. show, it's a showcase of today's best music in all genres and the gateway for new stars, like Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry, Jennifer Hudson, etc. J-Lo is the intelligent judge with thoughtful and incisive comments. She offered genuine constructive criticism which, in most cases, truly helped the contestants. I'm glad she'll be back. I think Randy doesn't really have much original thought to share and primarily just agrees with J-Lo and Steven is kind of in a world of his own. I much prefer these "nicer" judges than the hyper-critical ones that used to reign. They truly support the contestants and are usually "spot on in their comments." Notably, they missed the boat on Naima's Reggae number last year, getting her booted. Naima wasn't the best singer there, but she was the most creative and definitely the most interesting and entertaining performer. She was fabulous at the Idol On Tour show. Catch it this summer, if you can.

"Country music is three chords and the truth."Immigrants to the Maritime Provinces and Southern Appalachian Mountains of North America brought the music and instruments of the Old World along with them for nearly 300 years. They brought some of their most important valuables with them, and to most of them this was an instrument: “Early Scottish settlers enjoyed the fiddle because it could be played to sound sad and mournful or bright and bouncy” The Irish fiddle, the German derived dulcimer, the Italian mandolin, the Spanish guitar, and the West African banjo were the most common musical instruments. The interactions among musicians from different ethnic groups produced music unique to this region of North America. Appalachian string bands of the early 20th century primarily consisted of the fiddle, guitar, and banjo. This early country music along with early recorded country music is often referred to as old-time music.

It's not going away, sorry. LOL

I agree. The comments last season were worthless. None of the judges are capable of a real critique. At least Simon used to say things that would spur the contestant on to do better the next week. I'm not sure if I can watch another season of the same old drivel coming out of their mouths.

I don't listen to much country, or any pop music anymore for that matter, but I must objectively say country often has the best singers and musicians in popular music. As a musician, I often here some of these "singers" in other genres and ask myself, "Why would anyone want to pay to hear him/her?" Then again, that might explain why lots of people buy $1 MP3s or pirate these days. Even the fans subconsciously realize it's not worth their money. Rant over.
