Another day, another Forbes list of who in Hollywood is likely making more money than you. This time, we're focusing on the actors.
Leonardo DiCaprio rose to the top of the heap this year, moving up from fifth place to first thanks to the estimated $77 million he earned between May 2010 and May 2011.
Forbes is pinning DiCaprio's success not on his ability to churn out blockbuster after blockbuster over the course of his career, but rather his reputation for doing solid work with strong directors.
His 2010 projects, "Shutter Island" (directed by Martin Scorsese) and "Inception" (Christopher Nolan) earned a combined total of $1.2 billion, and Forbes notes that DiCaprio also saw a nice amount of the profits.
His earnings in the past year also helped the actor unseat Johnny Depp from the No. 1 spot. The estimated $50 million Depp earned between May 2010 and May 2011 means he's dropped down to second place since last year's tally.
Depp's four "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies have so far earned a combined total of $3.7 billion globally, and Forbes says the actor is able to ask for a sizable payday with new projects.
Following Depp is Adam Sandler (an estimated $40 million between May 2010 and May 2011), Will Smith ($36 million) and Tom Hanks ($35 million).
Forbes figured out the estimated earnings by consulting those in the industry, such as agents, lawyers and producers. Earnings represent pretax gross income and don't include deductions for any agent, management or lawyer fees.
