Amy Winehouse’s passing is a reminder that so many music industry legends leave us too soon. For sad and mysterious reasons, it seems that many can’t make it past their 27th birthday.
Luckily, their stories are still with us in their music and, for some, also on film.
A few movies on this week’s list include rock bio pics. These have a pretty standard formula: The movies introduce the subjects before they were celebrities, and follow them as they rocket to fame and fortune. In many cases, their lives either spiral out of control or result in some sort of tragedy (i.e. a first class ticket to rehab, an organ transplant candidacy, or an abusive relationship).
What are you favorite Rock n’ Rollas? Here’s mine:
- The Doors (1991): “I am the lizard king. I can do anything.” – Jim Morrison (This pic is also the last good movie starring Val Kilmer.)
- The Last Waltz (1978): If you haven’t seen this Scorsese doc, then you’re missing one of the best concerts ever recorded. Today it remains a testament to The Band’s diverse influences and timeless sound.
- La Bamba (1987): “The sky belongs to the stars.” – Buddy Holly
- Ray (2004): “Yeah, yeah. I'm gonna make it do what it do, baby.” – Ray Charles
- Almost Famous (2000): “I am a golden god” – Russell Hammond
Honorable Mentions:
- Walk the Line (2005): “This one's for your warden!” – Johnny Cash
- What’s Love Got To Do With It (1993): “Go straight to hell, Ike!” – Tina Turner
- Once (2006): “Take this sinking boat and point it home...we’ve still got time.” – Glen Hansard featuring Marketa Irglova
- Oh, God! You Devil (1984): “Believe me... I'm possible.” – The Devil
