New blood on 'SYTYCD'

It seemed as though many of the regular choreographers (with the exception of semi-regulars Mandy Moore, Toni Redpath and guest judge Travis Wall) were given the July 4 weekend off on Wednesday night's "So You Think You Can Dance."

The result was a mixed bag from several new choreographers, but the good ones were really, really good.

This time, I'll put the bad news first. Aside from the fact that guest judge Carmen Electra (who openly admitted she's not an expert on waltzes) didn't bring much to the table, there was that Sean Avaristo hip-hop routine with Sasha and Alexander that fell completely flat. Look for them in the bottom three tonight.

Jordan and Tadd's smooth waltz didn't impress me too much, unfortunately. I think they both did a respectable job but the piece itself wasn't terribly exciting.

I enjoyed Ashley and Chris' salsa from Liz Lira, more than the judges did. I understand where they were coming from, but I felt that Ashley especially really brought it. Still, the pair will likely be in a lot of danger Thursday night.

On the bright side, Caitlynn and Mitchell are no longer dark horses but real contenders, after Mandy Moore's contemporary routine that left Mary Murphy, and the dancers themselves, in tears. I was reminded of Allison and Ivan in season two... season two, people! This was one to remember.

After being in the bottom three, Ryan showed that she is in it to win it, with a zombie-like jazz routine by Chucky Kaplow. She defined the term "selling it," and Ricky was no slouch either.

As for Melanie and Marko, they are officially this year's Katee and Joshua. They excel in everything, even a jazz routine with costumes that didn't really work for them. Bravo.

Clarice and Jess were splendid as always, but I preferred their routine last week. It may be that I have yet to warm up to Justin Giles' choreography style. I was pretty so-so on his group routine with the guys, and Ray Leeper's with the girls (what's with the sudden anti-male theme in some of the dances this season, by the way)?

Overall, I can definitely see Melanie/Marko, Ryan/Ricky and Caitlynn/Mitchell sailing into the top 10.

What did you think? Were you more impressed (or less impressed, in some cases) than I was? Share your iReport or comment below.

Just a small fyi to the writer, his name is spelled Shaun Evaristo. I was actually pleasantly suprised to see him on the show because I'm already a fan of his, but even I was sadly let down by his choreo this week. This performance show was really hit or miss for me, and I actually have more to say about the elimination night, but I'll wait for your article on that.

I slightly disagree... I thought clarice and Jess had the second best dance of the night, behind Caitlyn and Mitchell. Melanie and Marko were solid as always but I didn't much like the choreo. Cat's dress was fantastic; her legs are always a highlight for me. The best part of the show was the ladies' number... Nothing hotter than thigh highs and garter belts.

As for the lows, I have had enough of Ashley and Chris, though they've never gotten good choreography. Can you imagine how much better iveta would have done that salsa? Travis wasn't a good judge, too soft and he really shouldn't have called out his favorite dancers the way he did. Kat, we don't care about your barbecue, but thanks for mentioning it 4 times. I hope it's Ryan that goes this week... She and Ricky shouldn't have been saved by the judges in the first place but her facial expressions while dancing are really off-putting, especially when magnified by her garish lipstick. Jordan and tadd skated by, with Jordan pulling her signatue right leg up high behind me and twist my body while sensually staring into the camera move, like she does in every number. Sasha, you're my second favorite girl but Caitlyn will pass you up next week if you don't step it up.

As for the worst part of last night's show, whichever dude was trying to fight his way out of the hooded sweatshirt the whole time, I think Chris, you turned my stomach. It was like watching a baby rhino trying to be born. Also you were a full count out of sync with everyone else for at least one full eight count.

To end on a good note: my lovely Kathryn. It was wonderful seeing you again if only briefly. Also, you've been on my Celebrity list since season six, and my wife is cool with it if you're game. Just thought I'd put that out there.

Didn't appear to save. Will try again. Carmen a pleasent surprise and shocked at her lengthy creds that her previous television and movie roles did not indicate. Travis, too soft to be judge, but excellent Choreo. Best routines of the night for me were Melanie and Marko and Jess and Clarice. Prefered women;s group routine to the men;s in general but prefered Marko overall in the group performances.

I agree with your assessment but I wouldn't count Sasha out. I almost think the judges want her in the bottom so they can get rid of Alexander. She will make the top 5 girls. The choreography sucked last night and there is too much "lyrical Hip-Hop" and contemporary. We like more Ballroom, Bollywood and HipHop.
