Missy Elliott: Graves' disease didn't slow me downIf you haven’t seen Missy Elliott out and about over the past three years, it’s because you didn’t know where to look. The hip-hop artist has released a statement clarifying that while she does suffer from the autoimmune disorder Graves' disease, it didn’t cause her to press pause on her career. Elliott reveled earlier that she was diagnosed with the disease, which affects the thyroid, in 2008, and saw it impact her motor skills and lead to hair loss, bulging eyes, a rapid heart rate and dizzy spells.
And yet even with those symptoms, the 39-year-old says she worked through it. “There have been some inaccuracies reported in regards to my diagnosis with Grave’s Disease, so I wanted to clear things up,” she says in a statement. “I was diagnosed with Grave’s Disease about three years ago but it really hasn’t slowed me down at all.” The “Work It” artist goes on to check off all the things she’s been up to: “I rocked my performance on VH1 Hip Hop Honors’ tribute to Timbaland last year. I’ve written and produced a bunch of Grammy-nominated, #1 hits for artists like Keyshia Cole, Monica and Jasmine Sullivan. I toured the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia.” All of that, and she says she’s been working on her new album. “I feel great,” she assures fans. “Under my doctor’s supervision, I’ve been off medication for about a year and I’m completely managing the condition [through] diet and exercise.”

Eh, no big. Most of us are adults here, even though some of us, including me, tend not to act like it occasionally. Best to let it roll off our backs like water off a ducks. Still, sometimes a little tension gets the blood boiling and the creative juices flowing. Just gotta try not to get too personal, if you can manage. I failed on that a time or three.

I do want to point out one sad fact of life. There are a lot of people out there who see celebrities as role models by which to live their own lives. Not the smartest thing, granted. That being said, this article about missy may be just the thing for some sufferers of the disease to see that a mostly normal life is possible. I do agree that the ordinary everyday people who do everyday things while dealing with this disease are the real heroes, but there are those who see celebs above ordinary people, and if they can deal, anybody can. Weird, but true.
@ SallyMae, did you read the article?It specifically stated thatMissy was only speaking up because of misconceptions of her conition.. She just wanted to clarify, not make herself a posterchild. She has alsocarried on with life & work, without acting the martyr, as is evident in the fact that she was diagnosed in 08' & we're just hearing this now! I admire Missy because she very no nonsense, & not egod out like some people with no talent,who take xrays of their butts for entertainment! Shout out to dave nelson ,on that 1! It kills me when celebrities come out and say that they have some "serious" health issues and that's why they have or have not done certain things in the past few months or years. I too was diagnosed with Graves Disease. I didn't put my life on hold, I didn't hide anywhere and I sure as hell didn't make it sound like it was the end of the world or my life. If anyone looks up the definition of Graves disease, it doesn't say "you may die from it"
Actually, due to the high levels of hormone in my system, before diagnosis, I have some permanent heart valve damage and will probably one day die from it. I spent many days with a resting pulse of 190 while urgent care shook it's head and fed me valium. Finally my pulse peaked at 246 and I was greeted in the ER with an IV that stopped my heart completely. One shock and it bounced back to normal rate. Beta blockers were administered in large doses as soon as the lab results confirmed Grave's. I was strongly advised by my ER doctors and my endocrinologist that YES, in fact, you can die from complications of Grave's. I have the cardiac damage to prove it.
Grave's affects every patient differently. Some are barely affected, while others, like myself, almost code in the lobby and then get to wonder if the next palpitation will be "the one". I have been in and out of remission from Grave's for 4 years now. I'm through. I plan on breaking my moral oath and drinking the radioactive Iodine "cool aid" in 2 weeks. In my mind, the cancer risk isn't great enough anymore to live like this. I just want it to be over. From the crazy pulse, to the heat intolerance, to the muscle atrophy, this is an easy disease to hate. Strong willed or not, it can destroy your life for a period of time, as all autoimmune diseases do.
I'm a mid 30's guy. Before this I thought it was a "chicks only" disease, it's not. Guys if your heart races for no reason, all the time, and a little summer heat feels like being under a broiler, get a T3, T4, TSH test. It can save your life.
I've read very few comments here that are actually about the article. That's sad. I hope my story can help someone, as Missy Elliot's doesn't seem to be taken too seriously here.

There are thousands of individuals who are diagnosed with thyroid-related disease every year. My problem is that here it is presented as some heroic effort by this celebrity to overcome it. These diseases really impact daily living with symptoms described in the article, but all the afflicted students, parents, working adults etc., have to adjust to the illness and carry on with their lives still working, going to school, raising children and having relationships in spite of the disease. So she has Graves disease...she has done what the other thousands and thousands have done and come out on the other end. My hero is the mother, student or working professional who can overcome the illness and continue doing what they were doing before...not the hip hop artist, celebrity, sports star etc.

Grave's Disease is really not that bad, even though it can be. I've "suffered" from it for two years. You take a radioactive iodine pill or have surgery and you're "cured", although you'll more then likely have to take thyroid replacement hormones for the rest of your life. It sucks, but there are worse things in the world. Must we have information on every little health quirk that millions of people deal with everyday? Get OVER it and move on!

Get your cardio in too though... and the martial arts is always good, been doin it since I was a 3yrs and I'm a second degree blackbelt. I was turned onto it by my brother who is a Navy SEAL and has been an Army Airborne Ranger since he was 19yrs. So needless to say, while I am not impressed by your stats you do try....I'm just on another level homie....

@ the truth: i am no expert on this subject, but if i were to guess, i would say the flow they talk about is the steady rhythmic flow of words in the composition. I may be wrong about that, so dont hold me to it. @ terrell: i am surprised you cannot bench more than that. How long have you been lifting weights? I have fifteen pounds on you, and i bench over 400 regularly. Then again, i have been lifting weights for over twenty years. Keep it up, but remember it is not all about bulk. Slow steady reps of smaller amounts build strength. Build hand and wrist strength by using the squeeze and hold method on a racquetball. Do everyday chores with weights on ankles and wrists to improve speed. You probably already know all this, but it may help someone who doesnt. Martial arts is also an excellent way to improve strength, dexterity, breathing technique, focus, and discipline. Relinquishing soapbox now. Lol

kinda figured that last one would be denied. i pointed out specific names used for different races and said they should be removed from all languages. the moderator rejected it. i can understand the reluctance to post that. i do not undertand how the other person got theirs posted, though.
I really wish people would stop using derogatory words when referring to other races. I do not care what race you are, that kind of thing is wrong. Including the ones i have heard flung at whites. Do not call someone a race based insulting name unless you like being called by such names yourself. I highly doubt anyone likes that. We are the human race above all else.

I can tell you're young, and hope that with time you'll see that what people do on their own time typically doesn't affect them in the short-term. With that said, thank the young stoner who nurses you and be scared of the 40 year old standing over when you need their help.
Allow me to clear up one more thing. There are those of you who think i am an a~hole. To be perfectly honest, i am. I have no problem with people who think that way of me. I would hope that people notice that i only go after those who speak before thinking. The ones who think before speaking are not subject to my criticism. Mad would be one of those, as mad has shown quite a bit of intelligence in his posts. I ask that anyone who misunderstands anything i post ask me what i meant rather than criticize me for the wrong thing. If i make my meaning clear, and you still attack me, i will declare open season and retaliate heavily, as you have seen. And people do suck sometimes. I suck sometimes, because i am not perfect.
@charlie. Thank you for getting that it was a joke. However, i would be very wrong if i did not clear up one thing. In some states, EMT and first responder are the same thing. while i am fully trained and certified in first aid, cpr, and a few other rescue techniques, i am by no means an EMT. Those wonderful people are better trained and far more qualified in life saving than i could ever hope to be. What i did was more or less that of a somewhat skilled good samaritan. A volunteer that was on call to get to accidents in heavy traffic or gridlock until the real heroes could get there. I worked the 405 on the way to and from work, along with several others. Just one of many who tried to help a little.

Dave you should not say bad things about people we love. We dont care what color their skin or what the look like. Peace, BV, SunsineGirl are angels and we love them. Dobt matter what they post or what you post. They are awesome and we are luck to even get to read things they post.

Some of you need to go back to school and learn about things like citing examples and using perspective. As for the comment i made about people sucking, it was because there was not a single comment on this article, while the one about kim ks butt had over five hundred. And charlie, i put three women through nursing school, an honorable and often thankless profession. I used to be a first responder in california. The state i live in now does not recognize first responders as a valid or even legal deal. I miss doing that.
