Does Justin Timberlake smoke pot? 'Absolutely'

There's plenty of gossip about who the now-single Justin Timberlake is or is not dating, but he tells Playboy that you should probably forget what you heard.

"None of it’s true, so I shouldn’t even dignify it with an answer," he says of the Internet rumors about his love life."The thing is, I’m not going to sacrifice my friendships with people who are my co-stars...I’m not going to avoid spending time with people because someone who doesn’t know me makes assumptions about what’s going on. That’s bulls--. My life is not on the internet.”

Of course, one of those supposed relationships was happening with his "Friends With Benefits" co-star Mila Kunis, an affair they've both denied. But about his sex scenes with Kunis?

Timberlake tells Playboy, “I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t completely awkward. I couldn’t tell you the number of people in the crew watching me and my bare a–, but it was a lot."

With all of that awkwardness, it’s no wonder Timberlake sometimes feels the need to mellow out once in a while. On whether he’s a pot smoker, Timberlake answered, “absolutely.”

“The only thing pot does for me is it gets me to stop thinking,” Timberlake says. “Sometimes I have a brain that needs to be turned off. Some people are just better high.”

The actor has been providing more laughs than songs as of late – the 30-year-old says that cracking up an audience, as he’s done on “Saturday Night Live,” is now his most "favorite thing in the world" – and unfortunately for fans of his music, it doesn’t sound like he’s picking up that part of his career anytime soon.

“I don’t have a single song ready to go. People keep asking me when a new song or album is coming out, and I don’t know what to say,” he says. “Music is not my focus right now. It may be someday. It could happen next month or next year but right now it’s not where it’s at for me.”

The business side of the industry may have something to do with it, as Timberlake says it “taints an artist’s desire” to create new tracks.

“I love making music. I honestly love it. But there is a level where making music becomes a total life-sucking commitment,” he says. “To do an album and a tour, you have to be absolutely certain that whatever you have to say is from the heart, because you’re going to say it a thousand times – and on nights when you don’t feel like performing...But I haven’t felt that level of conviction the past few years. And without that conviction it’s crazy to put yourself out there.”

And while it may not be his focus now, Timberlake’s relationship with music goes way back, predating the 'N Sync craze and some of his infamous fashion mistakes.

“Not a lot of 10-year-old Caucasian kids were running around Millington, Tennessee, signing Stevie Wonder and Al Green songs, which were the songs I felt most connected to,” Timberlake says of his musical roots. “I wasn’t cool with the white kids because they thought I wanted to be black. And I wasn’t cool with the black kids because they thought I wanted to be black. So I was looked at as a traitor and an intruder or an imposter. I had to find solace in just being me.”

"Friends With Benefits" and "Bad Teacher," both starring J.T., open July 22 and June 24, respectively. You can read the full interview with Justin Timberlake in Playboy when it arrives on newsstands Friday.

Few months ago some dudes high on marijuana, drove down our neighborhood and ran through stop sign and hit an SUV. Killed 18 month old in SUV. What was sad was that he was so doped up that he was laughing when our neighbors ran to the car to see if everyone was ok. When cops arrived he said he wasn't drunk he was just smoking weed with his buddies.(Sigh) All this talk about legalizing this mess. Maybe some people can handle it, but why take the chance? Yeah alot of tax dollars wasted putting dopeheads in jail. But damn do we really think the answer is legalizing? We can debate all day about this until you witness first hand a tragedy. Yes a death relating to marijuana usage! Yes it is a gateway drug. It would be a gateway to a lot more destroyed lives than what we all think. But who cares you guys just keep on smokin'

Alcohol is sold in stores when you're 21 and its worse for you physically and mentally than Marijuana could ever be. Why do you think that is ? Maybe because the government can tax it and make profit off of it. Whereas if Marijuana were to be legalized, anybody with a home and backyard could grow it and sell it from their own home.... hence no profit for the suits. Thats the only reason which the big M hasnt been fully legalized country-wide for casual use.... There has not been one single marijuana related death in the history of humanity.... now lets do a count for the ones caused by alcohol..... you're welcome 🙂

i dont smoke herb and i have no prob with people that do... some of the most succesful people that i know smoke everyday. Justin Timberlake is a grown ass man and he can smoke whatever he wants.... and you as a parent should be responsible and smart enough to do the best that you can with your children. I grew up watching horror movies and watching my parents and familly drink alcohol in front of me and I didnt turn out to be an alcoholic. You need to try to be the best parent that you can be... and teach your young ones the differences between right and wrong. They will have to learn the rest for themselves and they will make mistakes as you probably also did when you all were young. Dont be so close minded about marijuana.... it's not heroin or cocaine. And remember... not everything the government or news networks say is bad for you, is. Open minded people that have good communication with their children usually raise educated, well mannered and kind heart children that often become successful. While the majority of you close minded squares that live your lives according to what you hear on the news of what right and wrong is... without even having done these things yourselves.... end up raising some messed up ass children that had to learn things for themselves because you didn't take enough time to b open and honest with them about things, or forced them to accept things from your perspective which maybe wasn't necessarily how they felt about it. Talk to your kids, be open minded and live your lives..... it's only going to happen once. Heck... smoke a little weed and loosen up...god knows some of you need it 🙂

Hollywood is full of pot smokers. I ran into a prominent music video director from LA while on the train to NYC who said that all the big stars have medical cards. It's just a more accepted part of the culture out there. And I would argue that pot doesn't turn off your thoughts, JT.

I'm with ya, Justin. The fact that any idiot in this country that reaches the age of 21 can walk into a store and get enough alcohol to literally KILL THEMSELVES, while a harmless drug like weed gets people locked up just for having it.

And yes, it's harmless, don't get your info from Partnership For a Drugfree America or DARE, two programs that were funded at one time by alcohol and cigarette makers LOL

Time to end marijuana prohibition. It only took us 15 years to realize alcohol probition was a failure, why is it taking 30+ to realize it with weed??

You can punish someone if they kill/injure someone while smoking pot (although its pretty unlikely), but to impede the freedom to choose and claim its a danger to life is ridiculous. Should we all not have a pair of scissors becuz someone mite stab someone with them?? No. Until someones life or liberty is violated, that person is free to choose and thus face the consequences of those actions. govt should not impose laws that restrict freedom of choice.

So based on the "logic" of the freedom tokers, many of you think it's ok to have your pot anytime and it affects no one. I am sure the majority of you have never seen an up close and personal Emergency Room Trauma that was a result of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. It's not a matter of freedom, it's a matter of impacting you, your family and the innocents around you. By your logic, we should let fire fighters, policemen, doctors, astronauts, nurses, anyone in control of a nuclear weapon all light up because "there's no harm". REALLY PEOPLE?????

So, with his comment re: "pot," Mr. Timberlake has declared his self-serving, anti-social, criminal orientation. This, sadly, is very common in our country. Select segments of our society pick and choose which laws they do or do not respect and follow.

Fortunately, from a personal perspective, I know little to nothing about Mr. Timberlake or his purported career. I suspect, however, he probably has an influence on certain elements in our country that will use his endorsement of dope as support for justifying their own decadence.

Such mores are, in part, the cause for the degradation of our society. More's The Pity!

Did you know, the men that founded this very country broke the law? Many wars have been won (or at least given a heavy advantage) thanks to things that were against the law. Rosa Park sitting down because she was tired and didn't want to walk to the back of the bus, was against the law. There are a lot of unjust laws on the books nationally, and on the state and local level. Just because something is a law does NOT make it right.

I know there are a lot of supporters and few detractors for pot use. I am a suporter, I have been smoking for 10 years now. I have a good job, great home and social life. I have taught myself german, html and php web languages. So its not much of a motivation killer at all.

I have never used anything 'hard' no coke no meth no heroin. So not much of a gateway drug there. The majority of people the first drug they use is tobacco, caffeine or booze. Not one is the recorded history of the human species has anyone every overdoesed on weed.

Using or not comes down to a human rights issue, because ultimately you are controling how your mind functions, no goverment should be able to regulate that and that is exactly why they have not been able to stop it. The only thing the war on drugs has accomplished is making hard drugs like heroin more pure and cheaper to but than it was 30 years ago.

Pot is safer than cigarettes, it's been proven. Ban cigarettes and legalize pot, the amount of money to be made by a government, would be amazing. It could get rid of a lot of debt in the US, that's for sure!

I'm so tired of hearing that too. It hasn't been proven, it can't be proven because pot isn't regulated. All these people are getting drugs from God only knows where laced with God only knows what and grown in whatever, no one knows. It hasn't been legal long enough to study the health effects in time compared to a cigarette smoker and many potheads smoke cigarettes as well, or vice versa. Smoking anything is not healthy. Have you ever seen a resinated bowl? Where do you think that yellow stain goes in your body? Lungs. Also, morphine has medicinal purposes but does that make it ok to dose up on daily? Obviously not....

Obviously you are too dumb to understand. If it's not legal, there's no regulation of what's in it. Nothing to say what chemicals are entering your body or not, no stability of potency or not, and therefore the different people you study will have different variations of chemicals depending what's in the weed smokers being studied. I have yet to see a scientific study showing pot does not cause cancer or any risks. Show me that and then call me dumb, stoner. Or just smoke up and be stupid.

Slavery was legal once, does that mean you would have supported it? Some laws are moraly wrong and locking people up for smoking Cannabis is a tragic waste of time, law enforcement, money, and criminal in that it takes freedom from otherwise law abiding individuals (they stop paying taxes and YOU start footing the $30,000 a year to house them in jail).

Also, you cannot say a point made, as to why a drug should be legal, is invalid because it is illegal. That's drug czar logic.

Smoking weed doesnot preclude one from having their own moral code. This mindset is just as moronic as many christians believing atheists and agnostics can't have their own moral code. Mankind started developing moral codes long before the start of jewish and christian religions. Moral codes most likely started being codified around the bronze age when zorastrianisms concepts of dualism became widespread. So what you are saying is, just in case you can handle cannabis consumption responsibly, we are going to arrest you just to make sure every pothead's life is ruined equally? Can you say "intolerance"?

What kind of sense does that make? You are saying nobody should choose to exercise their liberty and use Cannabis because a few might abuse it? Let me quote a famous dead guy here:

It will be found an unjust and unwise jealousy to deprive a man of his natural liberty upon the supposition he may abuse it.
      George Washington

The US has lost it's way, it's not about getting YOUR way, it's about nobody having their rights trampled. You don't have the right to tell someone else what drugs they can or cannot take. Period. If you think you do, you are wrong.~

cmp7533 that is YOUR choice. You don't have the right to impose your opinion on anyone else in a FREE country.

THIS is what you guys don't understand:

      Freedom = CHOICES

If you don't like abortion, don't do it, but it's not your choice when it's someone else's baby. If you don't like Muslims then don't go to a moque but you can't tell them not to build one where they want. It doesn't work that way.

Bigot: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially: one who regards or treats the members of a group with hatred and intolerance.

I hate to call people names but you need to evaluate yourself as a human and see you are not tolerant of your fellow man.

Haha, I didn't say it should be illegal, I said it makes you stupid and lazy. That's MY freedom of speech. I don't care if it's legal or not. If someone wants to be stupid and lazy, that's their choice. I just wouldn't go around bragging how I smoke pot, just like I wouldn't go bragging about how I get drunk or smoke cigarettes. I drink and smoke cigs and used to be a pothead. Pot is a life waster. Alcohol ruins lives, and cigarettes kill you. My point is, yeah freedom, great, legalize it, but don't brag about being a pothead, makes you look like an idiot and it's a bad message for kids growing up thinking stuff like that is cool when they are impressionable by pop stars. I smoked pot as a teenager throughout high school and I wish I never did. Set me back in my later years. My message is simply that bragging about smoking pot makes you sound lazy and classless.

If MJ were made legal tomorrow ...we would see a drastic decline of drug use. Drugs don't destroy evil government ruins families. Do you really think our involvement in afghan has anything to do with what the t.v. Tells you? It has to do with controlling the poppy crops. The war on drugs is a crock of crap , shoved down our throats all day everyday. Now they can kick in your door if cops smell mj. So much for the 4th amendment. These wars are making us all slaves. Maybe if everyone had alittle compassion...alittle understanding...and the ability to see the truth. Drugs would not be a problem. Our government....brings in to this country 80% of the drugs on the streets and in our pharmacies. The more we bow down to this evil government..the more they will rise...until its to late and we all have microchips in our hands and in our heads....its coming.

it's not the seventies any more.

there was a time when California and Amsterdam really did have the market cornered, but today it's just not the case. don't get me wrong, both places still have great pot, but now, with the advent of medical marijuana laws, not only are more people growing it, more people know how to grow it. I've seen incredible grass in every corner of the US and, hands down, the BEST I've had was from Durango, CO and a close second was purchased in NYC, though, to be fair, I've no idea where that was grown.

the point is, if you think the only people who know great pot are northern California hippies, you are a northern California hippy. I'm confident that Mr. Timberlake has access to some of the finest weed available because it's not about location, it's about money.

btw, a good Jack Herer is tough to beat.

And people wonder why the drug war is constantly getting defeated in the US. I hope Mr Timberlake knows what the real cost of drugs are... Shattered families, ruined lives (not everyone is rich enough to buy a good lawyer).

On the other hand, if drugs were legal like alcohol and tobacco, we'd at least see some revenue and not have people in jail eating up tax dollars.

Pot has ruined more futures than meth or coke, I suspect. Why? Because it
feels so good not to think, just as he says. Problem is...not thinking doesn't get you
through school, doesn't help you succeed in anything. We have a whole generation
that is just "chilling" through life with any accomplishments. Some of them go one
to harder drugs, sadder futures. I agree with Victor.

Carla, you might as well be saying "all black people..."....the reality is, all people are individuals....there are many "kids" that smoke weed everyday while maintaining a 4.0 in school and are active in extra curricular activities. There are individuals that suck at school and are going to fail regardless of whether they smoke weed. There are individuals that don't smoke weed and have bad grades and are introverted to a point that they are either in class or on some online game when they aren't sleeping....basically, you attribute causality when there isn't even a high correlation...

@Carla, not everyone stops thinking when using cannabis. You must know some real slackers. Some of the most intelligent and successful people I know are cannabis users. To them, it beats drinking. And that old wive's tale about it being a gateway to other drugs is no more true of cannabis than it is of nicotine, caffeine, or alcohol. That's the same unproven propaganda they used to feed our frightened parents back in the 60s.

Heh, I found that smoking weed helped me do math much more accurately... helped focus my thinking whereas when sober I found my mind racing. I do know when I was a teen, I didn't listen to my parents when they said not to smoke pot as they drank and smoked all the time I grew up... and even at that age it was obvious which was the lesser of three evils and that was weed... if anything their and other adults hypocrisy led me to finally experimenting with weed. I have also read and talked to many musicians and artists who find smoking weed conducive to their creativity. I figure eventually they will have to decriminalize it since our prisons are over flowing. Quite sad that the USA has the largest prison population in the world... odd in the land of the free. To bad the social conservatives are not true conservatives or we wouldn't have to deal with them legislating morality.

Victor, They tried that "revenue" argument recently in Maine, when they tried to legalize pot entirely (note: Maine already has a medical use MJ law). My counter-argument is that legalization won't raise a single penny in revenue, and here's why; criminals are making money selling it illegally now, so why would they be willing to cut into their profit margin by paying tax on it. The only thing legalization would do is keep the guy driving down the road with a truckload of pot from being arrested for possession and/or transportation. Dealers will continue to sell it in sleazy back alleys, and squeeze out every penny of profit they can. In California, the MJ usage requirements are so lax, anyone can get a prescription for any excuse in the book; perhaps they should start prosecuting the doctors for issuing bogus prescriptions. They could start by stripping the doctor's of their medical license when they issue a bogus prescription; and they could require that anyone claiming a "medical need" for marijuana must come before a special board of inquiry, justify their actual medical need for the medication, and submit to drug testing for any other substances. If they are found with other (illegal) drugs in their system (i.e. cocaine, heroin, etc.) they are automatically disqualified for getting medical MJ.

I smoked pot in high school hoping that it would slow down my overactive brain. Instead, all it did was make me more introverted and think stupider thoughts at a much, much faster rate. It pretty much had the exact opposite effect I wanted. I know a handful of successful habitual pot smokers, and a whole lot that aren't meeting their potential. Different strokes for different folks, you gotta know yourself and what works for you, I suppose.

You have to continue to smoke & do things everywhere until being high is a normal state of mind... I have ADD & depression & I started smoking on a daily basis for the insomnia affects of Celexa & adderall (33, now 38)... At first, you do feel intraverted & quiet but you have to be confident & strong until your comfortable... I find without it, I am more lazy and less productive... The big thing is... When you have a job to do & you look at it & all you can think about is... "Man this is gonna take forever to finish... " I find these jobs so much easier to accomplish because all I think about is the next task & block out any negative influences coming from my conscience. I find this helps a lot with games like Golf & Billards... You block out the negative thoughts while you only concentrate on your next shot.

It's such hypocrisy weed is illegal. I really hate the fact that every night drunks can wheel themselves to the local store/bars and tank themselves up, drive home, beat their wives - and its still legal! Who the heck ever behaves that way high? No one! It's illegal because it gives police more of a reason to bust brown people and throw their butts in jail. We've turned our prisons into a some kind of job production infrastructure - its a freaking business now...which is why weed will stay illegal. It's too lucrative for local police, ATF, DEA, and whatever other acronym you wanna add to the bunch, to farm the local communities for their cash-crop marijuana convictions. By busting HARMLESS and otherwise LAW OBIDING marijuana smokers – they bring in a lot of money. IE: States receive gov. subsidies based on prison population numbers. The more people a state can arrest and hold in prison – the more federal money they get – per person. This country makes me ill -
