Lady Gaga's album has steep drop in salesAfter last week's strong sales debut, Lady Gaga's album "Born This Way" has seen a sharp decrease in sales. The superstar's record sold more than a million copies in its first week, but for week two only 174,000 were sold, according to Billboard. Of course, Lady Gaga's album was on sale for just 99 cents not once but twice after its May 23 release thanks to Amazon, which was offering "Born This Way" at the deep discount along with storage space for the Amazon cloud player service.
Billboard notes that because the promotion likely tacked on hundreds of thousands of units to Gaga's first week sales, the second week's drop-off seems to be at an even steeper decline than is normally expected. At this rate, Billboard says, Adele - who has been suffering from laryngitis and had to cancel the remainder of her North American tour - could soon reclaim No. 1. The Brit singer's "21" is currently at the No. 2 spot, with 121,000 units sold.

Maybe because people are starting to understand what a talentless exhibitionist she is? Never understood her popularity and believe me, I've tried.
Really really have enjoyed Lady Gaga in the past. I am disturbed by her "Judas" song and will, therefore, NOT purchase the new c.d. Regardless of what anyone of these "older" folks are saying about her being forgotten in 5-10 years, you may wanna think again. I'm 48 and remember well when Madonna was getting her start and everyone said the same thing about her. IMO, Gaga has MORE talent that Madonna, vocally. Unfortuntely, she was gone way way off the tooo weird end!

Lady Gaga is someone who has realized how to capitalize on cheap theatrics to rake in megabucks. Luckily for her bank accounts, there are plenty of gullible people who are willing to contribute toward that end, as a good percentage of the population no longer demands quality in entertainment, or in any other profession for that matter. I hope that she donates a portion of her wealth toward alleviating some of the many types of suffering that exist in our country and in our world......that might, to some degree, compensate for the part she currently plays in the dumbing down of America.

I bought it for the 20gb of Amazon Cloud space. After listening to it, I think it really sucks!! Nothing but techno beats with auto-tune. Give us some of you real talent, Gaga, we know you have it. Quit the crazy costumes and worry about the music.

Here is the thing. There are plenty of music acts that were the big thing of yesteryear, faded into media obscurity, and yet still tour and produce new music. Sometimes, like the eagles or duran duran, they manage to get the spotlight again, but, far more often, continue to put out good solid music. Then you have the artists who never have a so called hit, but are great musicians just the same. Shame the media plays such a large role in deciding the next big act.

The album sold 1,108,000 in the U.S. its first week, the highest first-week album sales in six years, and then sold 174,000 its second week, totaling 1,282,000 in the U.S. (still massive sales). Worldwide the album sold 1,921,000 its first week (unbelievable sales) and sold 487,000 its second week, totaling 2,408,000 worldwide. Her previous two albums were far, far behind this at the second week. Congratulations to Gaga.

For anyone trashing her, as much as I do not like all her music, she is today's Madonna, just like the 2000s had Usher, Jay Z, and Beyonce, the 1990s pretty much was Backstreet Boys, Boys 2 Men, Mariah Carey, the 1980s had Madonna, Michael Jackson, Gloria Estefan, Prince, 1970s had Bee Gees, Elton John, John Lennon, 1960s was Beatles, Rolling Stones, and of course 1950s we had Elvis Presley, every decade has its pop diva, and for now its Lady Gaga's turn to be on top. Someday someone else will come along and be the top reigning champ. As much as I do not care for all of her music, me being 40, I do not mind a few of her songs. I am glad in some ways that music like this has made a comeback, very reminscent of the early 1980s, and adults back then in 1983, when I was 12, were trashing and saying the same thing about Madonna, Prince, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Run DMC, Poison, the same was said about Snoopy Dogg and Dr.Dre, Bones thugs and Harmony and so forth. At least with Gaga, she has provided a renansance to enjoy dance music. Thats what music is suppose to be about, having fun, partying, and living life the way you want. It was like that in the 1980s, and it should be like that today. Bottom line, don't like it don't have to listen to it.

I really used to like listening to Lady Gaga's music...not because it was necessarily anything spectacular, but because it made me feel good! Isn't that the point of music? She's gone a little too far for my taste anymore, so I haven't checked out her new music.

This disturbs me that peoe can be that much into an artist whos mainstream and prob doesn't even write half of the songs she sings if not more. There are far more many great artists that write and produce their own songs. Yet only this garbage makes it to the radios because our youth have terrible taste in music! Hell the artists coming out of the UK surpass what gaga will ever be in my eyes and thats a true artist! Not sure why, but I read the article (bored), personally not a fan but I am a producer/engineer and I must say the one thing that jumps out at me after reading so many of your comments is that many of us are simply not happy with ourselves so we focus are demented opinions on matters that almost always have nothing to do with ourselves personally per say. Bottom line is this society is and always has been driven more by monetary value than moral values so with that being said if you are one of many without a job right now you probably hate reading that some beef costume wearing artist (regardless of gender) is selling album (regardless of price) at such a rate. Where as on the flip side there are those that are employed/respected that have no need for hatred and simply respect open forums such as this one in hopes that one day we can all come together to make this world a better place. I think she has talent, but I'm not into pop music all that much. The only times I've ever seen her has been on TV shows that I have DVR'd and after a minute or so I have the luxury of fast forward. I do this with country musid as well, kind of the same, once you hear one song, you have heard them all.

Aretha franklin didn't, did, didn't, did, and didn't, and still remains one of the most talented, respected, and loved singers of all time. And aretha can belt out songs that capture the soul without a single note from a musical instrument. Take that, lady gagme. I wholeheartedly disagree with you and your grandmothers listening observation, mainly because you are only speaking for yourselves while playing games at the table. Lady Gaga does absolutely nothing for me, and I feel sad for those who enjoy her as much as you do. Gaga is a fake, hiding behind a mask and is nothing but a theatrical mess. Her music conforms around this imagery and I, for one, can't see beyond it.
With other music from various artists, most of the highest regarded musicians don't need the theatrical image because their talent screams volumes and nothing else is needed.
Gaga fans... I believe this artist will one day fade away like so many others do that quickly run out of musical substance. You can only be a clown for so long before human beings tire of it.

I wouldn't even buy it for 99 cents. Amazon offered it for that price for two days. It still did not tempt me. I just do not see the allure at all.
I would pay way more money for an independent artist who actually did not sell out to a label. Why? Because those artists actually have talent and work hard to stay true to themselves and their art. What I have previewed from this album is not worth listening to at all. I'd rather listen to nails down a chalkboard.

I would not call a cd that sold a million copies in it's first week a fail. It's already sold hundreds of thousands of single downloads......3 singles which have already hit the top 10. Both of the video singles have sold and still are selling in huge #'s. The week BTW came out Gaga's other cds started selling more copies. Hey & it is still #2 & #15 on I-tunes. Would think right now every record label wishes they had a cd failing this badly 🙂

To me it is very simple: She put shock over danceability.
Let me explain. Sure, her first album "The Fame Monster" had a lot of wild costume stuff in the videos, and over time that got wilder, but at its heard it was a dance album with dance tracks, great club hooks, and stuff that made you want to get up and dance. Before the wild video stuff took off, it was the music which made the album.
I believe she took the message that she had to be more and more out there to shock people, but it wasn't all about that with the record. She has a section of fans that is very vocal and that she identifies with, but she needs to balance it with danceability and beat in the music.
As wild as the videos and stage shows are, the audio is what drives most of the sales and the danceability and groove has to be there for that. If people don't get that "hook" out of it, they won't buy it, and that will cut into sales over time even if the hard core fans run out and buy her new tracks the first week.
The real problem is that people want music for free.
They won't work for free, but if you make music, you should.
It used to be the record labels that were screwing the artists. Now the fans are, too.
For me, it's all hype and costume, like a masquerade, and other than that, nothing there. She's sleazy and offensive. Just like the one she's copying, Madonna.

I totally agree. I think Lady GaGa is incredibly talented but for some reason she is "stuck" on all the gimmicks which I believe is losing some of its fascination and outrage. Also, due to the politically correct environment we live in no one wants to admit that "perhaps it has to do with the theme of this CD?" It is not about being "anti-gay" but that doesn't mean that you have to be Pro-Gay.

I'm not going to get into the mud-slinging going on in this forum, but I will say this: Gaga's album sold more in its first week than any of her contemporaries. Most people who were going to buy the album bought it in the first week. Considering that most music listeners don't even purchase full albums anymore (and many that do rip them illegally from torrent sites), it's not like Gaga is die off from poor album sales. She has sold a combined total of about 2.5 million copies so far. That's pretty dang good, considering most of it came the first week.

I suspect the album will sell for a long time, though not a million units a week. I was never much of a fan, but being overexposed to the CD by my fiancee I gotta admit there are some great tracks on it.

While the "born this way" message is a good idea, it is quite incomplete. It should be remembered that there is nothing inherently wrong with being another way than the way you were born. You can't defend a LOT of things (tattoos, body mods, new life choices, on and on etc.) with "I was born this way-hey". Most musicians in the industry today survive on their "singles" being hits and touring. Albums just no longer hold the same importance that they used to. It's remarkable that her album did that well to begin with considering she only released a few singles prior to the release. When they choose the next single for radio play, it will bump up sales for that single and make a few more people interested in the album.
NOT 1 Single deacent album uir song has been released since G&Rs Use Your Illusion 1 and 2. Before that nothing deacent since the very early 1980s. I'm pushing 50 and am of a generation that grew up exposed to new music constantly. Whether it was punk/new wave/post-punk when I was in high school or the explosion of metal and new pop when I was in college, I have gotten used to there always being something new right around the corner. My tastes are pretty eclectic but I do like the occasional good pop song and it's obvious that Lady Gaga is not just some generic artist - she is incredibly talented and has a knack for writing perfect pop songs. The fact that the lyrics are often of the singer/songwriter variety makes it more special because I really don't think there are many in the genre who can pull that off as well as she does.

We were born, raised, turned into teenagers, had as much fun or more than the youngster of this generation, then we turned middle age, later, yes, old. So, we already went through all the stages of life.

Last time I checked, moving a million units in a week in this declining music industry is one hell of an accomplishment. Just because it was an 80% drop doesn't mean it was unsuccessful at the slightest. Not only did fans rush to make sure she sold over 2 million albums worldwide in a single week but 174,000 units in the second week in the United States is still major. Say whatever you want about her but she's got it made. I still find it amusing on how many people act like music critics and claim that Gaga's "15 minutes are up". Well, Born This Way went platinum within one week despite how much it apparently "sucked". You were saying? I'm barely even a fan of this woman and I can realize the impact she's made and she's still making.
I bought her new album and I liked it. Like her previous 2 albums, I think the best songs are the ones that have never made it to the radio (my favorites on the new CD are "Americano" and "SheiBe". Personally, "Born this way" and "Judas aren't nearly her strongest on the album. And for anyone who thinks she has no talent, I would ask that you go to YouTube and listen to her sing "Speechless" before you assume– the songs that make it to the radio are great pop radio hits but her best songs don't make it on the radio.
I think it's interesting that people get so worked up over her, so much hatred over something so silly. And all of the stereotyping– not all of her fans are teenagers, and not all of her haters are old fuddy-duddys– I love her and I just graduated from professional school, and my grandmother and I are the biggest Lady Gaga fans in our family. I think maybe the way she has polarized people is a tribute to her status– she seems to be following in the footsteps of Madonna, moreso than Britney Spears.

I just knew it was due to just a stupid promotion and naive fans who rushed to buy her album I knew and wish that the lame Gaga's album would be out of sight only after 1 week. 90% of Gaga's songs are totally lame and boring. Didn't she release four singles in a row before the album release in desperation to build momentum? And HERE WE GO! LOL LOL!

I agree. The gimmick, although fun, creative, and refreshing when she first arrived in the scene, is now wearing thin and starting to come off as a parody of herself. She's already world famous, why does she have to try so hard at trying to "shock" everyone with her costumes and religious undertones in her songs when she could just show off her talent, vocals, and piano skills? She also should get back at writing better lyrics, all of her songs on Born This Way was practically her just singing the same phrase over and over and adding her name in there. I agree with Chris. Once you are around some years you notice that there is a new "star" out every couple of years. It is annoying how the media tells us, the public who is the next star. I've only heard two tracks from this album, "Born this Way" and "Judas" and they are literally the worst songs I think I've ever heard. I don't understand how people can like that "music"
I didn't particularly care for Judas at first but it has grown on me. However, the other tracks on the album are much better– I don't regret buying it.

If it had been the regular price, the number sold would still end up being about the same but more evenly split from week to week. And, yes, I realize there is a segment of the people that bought at 99 cents that would never have bought it at the regular price. But the point is that she sold a massive number of albums in the first two weeks... 1,174,000.

I agree. Adele is very good. Haven't seen her perform yet and unlikely to this time around. I did see Gaga in April and she was great. Good show, had fun. My daughter got some great shots. It's all entertainment folks. Move along, nothing to see here.

Before you claim that she has no talent I'd invite you to go to YouTube and listen to her sing "Speechless." She actually has amazing vocal and songwriting ability, but unfortunately the record labels determine which songs make it to the radio, which are usually the dance hits where her talent isn't showcased. I was very pleasantly surprised when I bought her albums.

That's not how it works. Typically the insane people all buy the album in the first week. Then it's supposed to sell to regular people based on word of mouth. The fact that it's not selling on word of mouth means that nobody is saying it's good.

For comparison, Britney's new cd sold only 270,000 the first week...and only 76,000 the second week. Gaga's sales might be a big percentage drop off, but selling 170,000 in her 2nd week is still HUGE.
Oh for heaven's sake. Grow a personality. You don't have to claim to "love" something that sucks just because the other losers in your Loser Fanclub tell you to. I liked (and bought) Lady Ga-Ga's "The Fame Monster", and it was my favorite album of the year. But "Born This Way" just sucks, and the twits defending it remind me of the nerdtastic dweebs that kept insisting that "The Phantom Menace" was awesome.
Except it doesn't actually suck. While I agree it's not as good as "The Fame Monster", "Born This Way" has some really awesome tracks, a great theme that can't be expressed enough, and some really good groundbreaking (if not over-the-top) productions.
The worst thing about "Born This Way" was the hype, and that plus Gaga now being a mainstream (which everyone seems to hate because they want to fill special or they get tired of it... neither which Gaga herself could control in how successful she has become) is what hurt the album the most.
What I hate more than avid fans who defend at all cost is people who blindly hate at all cost AND they go out of their way to make sure they try to obsessively discredit the very person they hate. It's absolute ignorance at it's finest.
I bought her previous albums after hearing songs on the radio and found that I fell more in love with the songs that never even made it to the radio. While I didn't like "Judas," I bought the new album on the release day in anticipation of the other tracks that I might not hear on the radio.
In my opinion, she didn't disappoint. "Americano," "SheiBe," and "Heavy Metal Lover" are my favorites on the album. I also love "Marry the night" and "Bloody Mary." Again, my favorite tracks are the ones that never make it on the radio– I find that her vocals are better showcased in those songs. I am so glad I bought the album.
And to anyone who claims she has no talent, I would invite you to go to YouTube and listen to her sing "Speechless." It is great and shows how much vocal ability she truly has.
Lady Gaga is an interesting person and in my opinion, has brought something to the music atmosphere that is refreshing– it's both polarizing (as you can tell from these message boards) and uniting at the same time. My grandmother (who is 78) and I both love lady gaga, and my grandmother liked her album, too. She has served as a bonding point for us (the only other artist we both enjoyed was Elvis). The weekend after I bought the album, we sat in her dining room playing board games while listening to it and we both liked it.
Lady Gaga speaks about acceptance, tolerance, and love for each other. I think it's something we all need right now, in our society that seems to have problems accepting people for who they are, and with a government that only serves to polarize us and turn against each other. We could all use a little tolerance, and maybe a good dance hit while we're at it! 😉

Lady Gaga does absolutely nothing for me, and I feel sad for those who enjoy her as much as you do. Gaga is a fake, hiding behind a mask and is nothing but a theatrical mess. Her music conforms around this imagery and I, for one, can't see beyond it.
With other music from various artists, most of the highest regarded musicians don't need the theatrical image because their talent screams volumes and nothing else is needed.
