James McAvoy: Brit filmmakers dumb down movies for Americans

The American-made superhero flick "X-Men: First Class" may seem an unusual choice for Scottish star James McAvoy, who earned critical raves for British dramas like "The Last King of Scotland" and "Atonement"—but then again, the actor says U.K. movies just aren't what they used to be.

"We make loads of movies to try and hit in America, and yet it's never the ones aimed at America that do well. We dumb our movies down because we want Americans to understand them," the BAFTA winner tells SkyNews.

"Then Americans watch it and go, 'This is a really unsophisticated, dumbed-down movie. Why would we buy this? Why do we like this? We don't.' It's like we're patronizing them and short-changing ourselves," he says.

McAvoy's "X-Men" co-star Kevin Bacon advises filmmakers to continue to play it smart on screen.

"I think the whole thing is to keep trying to make the best possible movie that you can, and hopefully the cream rises to the top," he says. "And sometimes, you know, you look at something like 'The King's Speech'—which is made for relatively little money compared to 'X-Men'—and it just keeps making money, making money, making money."

"X-Men: First Class" arrives in theaters June 3.

He wasn't trashing Americans. He was saying that the British film industry thinks they have to dumb down films for Americans, but that Americans are actually way too smart to buy it.

There are some British films that are really very good, and then others that are just amateurish and cheesy, which really speaks more about the Brits sense of humor and intelligence level than ours. I don't think that's a dumbing down for Americans. I just think they have a weird sense of humor.

True, some Americans are some of the smartest people in the world. The problem is that about 30 to 50% of Americans are probably some of the dumbest people in the world, and the media gets dumbed down for those morons. After all, smart people can understand limited intellects. But the people with limited intellects can't understand intelligence. For example "Inception" was really not that complicated but a lot of Americans found it overly confusing. Anyway, cheers to the smart people of the world, and may the idiots all be saved in the rapture if that involves their sudden disappearance.

Such is simple baloney. Film makers and screen writers are getting dumber. So are the entertainers. I haven't been to many screenplays in years because it is difficult to find a movie without blood, guts, fire, car chases and fart jokes. I sort of dare major studios whether in Britian the U.S. to make cerebral films. Who cares if the high school dropout doesn't understand it? If you pander to the masses you will one day start scratching your head like INBEV-Anheuser Busch and realizing that the craft brewers are kicking you butts in growth, or like Detroit wondering where Toyota, Nissan and Honda came from during the 80s. Hollywood you are the next Detroit.

Brits you are free to follow the same formula and lose as well.

They hate our religions but leave their own country so they can practice what they believe freely. They hate our military but fear the groups that slaughter their families.. Britain didnt invent the America , your people had to slip away in the middle of the night. Any country that worships their leaders that force them to believe what they believe shouldnt be calling anyone dumb. We can close our bases, keep our billions we give you to feed and care for your people. You come here and we give you interest free or free money to start a business. I am embarrassed to be an American at times, especially being from the deep south. This country isn't as grand as it used to be and it is only a matter of time before it collapses from such a weak infrastructure. Not only is America being dumbed down, it is becoming lazier. The country is growing without discipline and eventually it will have to deal with the consequences of the mistakes it's made.

This guy wasn't giving a back-handed compliment. He just told the truth; movie companies think we're too stupid to enjoy serious dramas, so they "dumb them down" for American audiences. His point was actually the opposite of what some of you are thinking. He is saying that American audiences are not dumb, and that intelligent movies like "The King's Speech" can do well here.

What's funny, though, is that you guys who are so defensive and making these hateful remarks about Britain are proving the point you've wrongfully accused McAvoy of making.

Most of you who swallowed the media line on "dumbing down" movies have focussed more on the interpretation of what was said than what was actually said. I bet he never said Americans are dumb. Dumbing down a movie is about marketing to the distribution channels to get the movie shown in as many cinemas as possible, not a commentary on viewer intellect. Anyone who got down and dirty on this blog gets a C+ or D-.

I'm an American citizen but I was born overseas and I've lived in a developing country as well as Europe...so I think I can speak with some authority concerning this topic of Americans "being dumb".

I don't think Americans are any less intelligent than Brits or any other people. In Fact some of the most brilliant people I know are Americans. But the difference is that in America, they take free speech so seriously that it's not just a matter of the gov guaranteeing people the right to voice their opinions, but rather people being allowed to say just about whatever they want. As a result of this, intelligent discourse in America often gets contaminated by stupid comments and arguments b/c in large part, these people know no one will hold them accountable for their ridiculousness.

Americans aren't any less intelligent, it's just that stupid people have a voice in America, and unsurprisingly they say stupid things.

Anti-intellectualism can actually get you pretty far in American politics...especially within the fringes of the Republican Party.

The majority that can still afford a LCD TV with blu ray player to play the newest blockbuster, just. So they can hop on their laptop or home computer and complain about the money they wasted to watch it. Meanwhile the minorities are worrying about real life problems. I'm just saying.....

Stop making idiotic comments on an article where someone is defending America's collective intelligence. It creates too much irony to handle.

A backhanded compliment is when someone insults you in a way that you don't actually realize you've just been insulted. Did he deny his statement that Americans are dumb? No, he just said Brits who write movies for stupid Americans fail to make it big. He could have said, "Americans aren't stupid, and Brit director/producers need to learn this fact." Or perhaps, "Brit filmmakers dumb down movies for Americans, but this tactic fails, which leads to the conclusion that it is the British who are the idiots!"

Instead he tries to patronize Americans by insulting us, then attempts to make it appear as if it's actually some profound compliment. Silly snaggletoothed Brit.

Thanks Steve for your comment obviously alot of people cant read.. In reality, 90% of AmeriKKKans are complete morons, and they prove it in the comments section of this article. Their reading comprehension skills are in the gutter, just like most other aspects about them. They can't even see a compliment that's been paid to them, and we're not talking about just a few, but rather the VAST majority here who left comments.

I don't know how we've been so successful the past 200 and 35 years. Must be luck. OR MAYBE IT'S CLEVER PEOPLE LIKE YOU JUAN. People like Yr2. Oh, and a moron too.

Yes, we Americans are dumb. Which is why we receive 2 out of every 3 Pulitzer and Nobel prize, invented 4 out of every 5 technology patents on the planet, gone to the Moon and back 7 times, have the largest number of Ivy league schools on the planet, invented every modern method of communication and mass media, built most of the International Space Station, have the largest bank in the world, the world's largest theme park, and yes, we could blow you up at the push of a button.

@ Lev- Saying America as a whole is "dumb" is completely moronic on your part. Do you claim that every British citizen has superior intellect and are thriving members of society??? So you have no poverty? No homeless? No underachievers? I as an American am NOT claiming that my nation has zero flaws but you've just chalked our whole nation up to a group of nothings. In America (just like in Britain) the individual choses to better themselves. It's unintelligible to say that I'm ignorant because of the piece of ground I reside on. You're preaching HATRED. It's people like you that breed the next generation to hate others and judge by stereotypes. I know a couple of wonderful girls from Britain who are a much better face for your country than you are. They realize that intelligence and creativity can come from any corner of the globe. You should harbor less hatred and look pass the stereotypes. That is TRUE INTELLIGENCE.

Gotta love those famous British backhanded comments. Yes, the Brits are so sophisticated with their 'Corey Street', lousy automobiles, and capital city that requires a modern day Sherlock Holmes to find an actual Brit who lives there. Has nothing to do with trying to 'make Americans understand' and more to do with 'dumbing down' stories for general audiences of all nations. That's just business. There's nothing stopping anyone from producing your typical Cannes art house flop, unless of course you're trying to run a business. Go bankroll your own 'too sophisticated for Americans' movie if you can't stand the industry. I'm sure you have plenty of money what with all of your starring blockbuster roles, you pathetic hack.

Though I agree with you, I also believe that he was simply stating that Americans don't prefer films that are "dumbed down" for them. Sounds like a compliment to me...
