Depp will be a legend, says 'Pirates' director

Edward Scissorhands. The Mad Hatter. Captain Jack Sparrow. Johnny Depp has played his share of quirky characters over the years, and according to "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" director Rob Marshall, they're just the types of roles that will make him a Hollywood legend.

β€œHe's as vivid as those great stars of the past, Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable and Errol Flynn," Marshall tells the L.A. Times. "Many, many, many years from now, when people look at this generation of Hollywood, he will be considered the great star of this era. He's his own thing and he takes major chances every single time he makes a film."

Marshall and "Pirates" producer Jerry Bruckheimer both believe Depp would have made a great silent-movie star.

"He's like a Rudolph Valentino," says Marshall. "He has such a command of expression without words. The humor and the feelings he can convey with his face alone is extraordinary. He's this consummate artist who is also like the nicest, most generous man."

Marshall compares Depp to Charlie Chaplin and swashbuckler Errol Flynn, and adds, "He's a throwback to another time. To me he is, honestly, a star from another time. He is that unique."

Do you agree that Depp is a legend in the making?

They may be great roles, which means the writers were greater than the actor that read the lines, but the trouble with JD is the same problem most stars have. They believe their own press releases and think that they're god-like, with the rest of the mortals surrounding them lucky to have their shadow pass by.

Until the Jack Sparrow roles came along he was essentially just another actor not really worthy of drawing a blockbuster hit. Now you want to compare him to the great lead role actors as mentioned in this article? Give me a break!

I can agree with this. He is a PHENOMENAL actor. But he should stop making these TERRIBLE Pirates movies. He carries the films from start to finish. If he doesn't get out soon they will drag him and his legacy down....

I saw The Man outside the "Late Show" studio after a taping. He had scurried in, late, before the show, promising to come back to autograph. He came out to THRONGS of fans. All of us had been waiting behind barricades for hours in the 100 degree sun. Five little girls next to me had their Capt Jack dolls and Nickelodeon mags. One almost fainted from the heat, but wouldn't move. As people screeched he slowly made his way around the circle, signing, posing, smiling. He passed me and I was taken by the fact that it's really true...he is ridiculously handsome. I was shoved away by the e-bay money rats, and didn't get any pix or my "P" cd signed. But each one of those llittle girls got an autograph. By the way, his TWO small but fascinating roles in "Before Night Falls"??? Legendary.

I knew he was special when I first saw him in Edward Scissorhands. What a mesmerizing performance that was. Through the years I lost track of him but occasionally have seen some of his work. In addition to his swashbuckling roles, his face can show a quiet kindness, gentleness and vulnerability in a way that is unique to actors. Yes, he will most likely become a legend/icon, if he continues to be given a range of roles that truly shows his talent.

He is a fantastic actor, one of my favorites. He can do just about anything – any other actor who flops at the box office has to start again to prove himself – but not Johnny. If a movie flops (and they say some of his did ... as in The Tourist), it is not due to his character and it does not stop folks from wanting him to star in their movies – not too many actors can say that. I loved him in Sleepy Hollow; Sweeny Todd; Cry Baby; the Ninth Gate; From Hell – just awesome.

I liove the sound of the breeze blowing in one ear and out the other of the shallowminds of those people who have nothing else to object to about Johnny Depp except their perception that it appears to them that he does not bathe. I have had occasion to meet and be near Mr. Depp on two separate occasions – once at a "Pirates" premiere (Summer) and again when he was filming "Public Enemies" (Winter) in and around Indiana and Chicago. He smelled wonderful both times and was quiet, gracious and unassuming. My dear shallow morons, what you see on camera in his personal wardrobe often includes such items as bracelets or necklaces that his children have created for him, or they are items from children that have terminal diseases, or from charities that he finds close to his heart. I applaud his wearing them eachand every time I see that he's added them to his wardrobe. As with other actors, what you see with his hair, long or short, is dependent on the role he is working on at the time (look at some past picture of Brad Pitt!!). As far as torn jeans, vests, t shirts...? I see musicians in same; other actors (male and female) in same. As far as the ungodly BORING Daniel Day Lewis's constant "disappearing into a role" (which appears to be the only way he can enter a role – disappear already!!! (at least Gary Oldman can act!) and your thoughts that Johnny doesn't n"disappear", well...I can ALWAYS recognize Clark Gable, Jimmy Cagney, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Cary Grant, Edward G. Robinson, Judy Garland...shall I go on? Mr. Depp is a generous, gracious, big-hearted man; he's a devoted father, he's extremely well-read. He remains unassuming and humble despite his fame and cherishes his privacy. He has talent in a number of different areas – actor, musician, writer – please let me know what you've done in your little worlds, dear shallow morons, to come close to all that Johnny Depp does to better the world. Please let me know what Mr. Day Lewis does that comes close to Johnny's generosity, charitable acts and affection for his fans.

Thank you, Adrienne, for telling it like it is. We never see Daniel Day Lewis out and about or in the news. That could be why there's nothing to say about him. He will be remembered for 2 or 3 movies – Johnny Depp will be remembered for his career. Captain Jack Sparrow came from Depp's imagination, and like so many other genius minds, fought to keep his vision of Sparrow clear, straight and true over the fear and trepidations of the Disney executives...and thank God he did. Johnny's a true original and very versatile. He can shower at my house any time!

Beautiful man, beautiful soul. He never takes himself too seriously and will give you the shirt of his back. He doesn't care what other people think of him either.
To be honest, I wasn't much of a fan of his in his earlier years – I never cared much for the "pretty boy" image that the media was pushing on him – but knowing that it turned him off as much as it did me helped me change my perception of him.
I fell in love with him because of Captain Jack, and when I started watching other movies he made – some before Pirates, but mostly since – I was blown away by how he can transform himself with each role. While he may not be the "Man of 1000 faces" he's well on his way.

Haters just prove with what they say against him that they are fully incapable of the kind of humility that he has
and Pirates of the Caribbean haters have no sense of humour or adventure.

Johnny will be remembered many years from now as a man who earned respect through hard work and a love for what he does.

Yes, Johnny Depp is a great actor, however I don't think of him as the greatest. I think he does rank up there as one of the better actors and indeed reminds me of actors from the "Golden Age" of movies. He is right up there with Leonardo DiCaprio as a throwback to old Hollywood. Both actors are classy, handsome, and not in the tabloids constantly for bad behavior or stupid antics. Both could come to my house and stay forever if they wanted!!!! Yowza!

I am a huge fan of Johnny, not only for his looks. His portrayl of Captain Jack Sparrow is amazing and nay-sayers can go jump off a plank and be eaten by mermaids! I'm also a fan of pretty much all of his films and I love how he can take a role and totally make it his own. You don't even realize it's him sometimes. For those of you who compare him to Daniel Duchbag Louis, I say, you're sooo wrong. From what I've seen in the media, Daniel portrays himself to be better than everyone else. Well, he isn't. What's he trying to prove? Oh yeah, he's a terrible actor and looks down on other people. I love how Johnny is so down-to-earth and no matter what, stays true to who he is and where he came from. He's a good ol' southern boy:) He makes me proud that I am different and to not listen to how people judge you. DL I agree. I LOVE Benny and Joon! Sam is someone I would totally fall for:)

No I don't agree. He's a great actor but not a legend. Legends move you, they shake your world, they impact your life. Before Pirates JD was a washed up former teen star going nowhere and got lucky with a blockbuster franchise. The key to remember is movies made him, he didn't make the movies...and that is why he is no legend.

I think you are just jealous. He turned in some brilliant performances long before Pirates of the Caribbean. He is one of the best. Have you seen Don Juan DeMarco? The Astronaut's Wife? Dead Man? All great performances. And, he has stayed true to himself and his fans. There is no other actor out there who is so kind and generous. Jack Sparrow is truly his own. There are better characters than Jack. There is John Wilmot, The Second Earl of Rochester. There is Sweeney Todd. What other actors can get away with that range of characters? None that I know of.

...Depp is great in all his roles. I agree he and Robert Downey Jr are two of the current best. I would also put him in the company of Robert Deniro. I never catch him "acting", and I always believe his character.

Edwards Sciissorhands shows his true genius. Speaking less than 120 words Johnny conveys the emotion, soul, and humbleness that Depp will be known forever. No actor can perform to the camera with his eyes and facial expression to the degree that he does. Sweeney Todd was I believe his most difficult role. He should have won the Oscar over Lewis, cuz Lewis had already won one anyway. Finding Neverland also should have gone to him also.Jamie Fox is more of a comedian than he is an actor Maybe Depp is too good for Hollywood? There are only 234 actors on the concrete at Grauhmanns Chinease Theatre. Johnny is one of them!! Nuff said...

Depp is an icon. hes been through normal trials like the rest of us and used those experiences in his life in his art. A monumental artist such as Depp commands respect. and to be a gentleman and as humble as he is famous has class act written all over. Whether you like his films or not he is still the example. too bad athletes and other stars cant seem to give up their greed and keep themselves out of trouble or even be real as a person....coby are you reading this? how about you a-rod? lindsey i know you have nothing but time and your house to look at...learn from johnny depp and maybe you can regain the respect a person of your status should have. first lesson dont forget where youre from and dont forget that youre not better than anyone else.

Dead Man was awesome! Most of his movie roles are exactly the same from movie to movie. Alice was the worst movie I've seen in a loooong time. He needs to take on a few adult roles again before he becomes a legend.

The Pirate movies 'blow'? Clearly, if you knew the dollar amount that they grossed, you would see you are a pretty solitaire opinion. Apparently, also, an idiot. Johnny Depp is one of the GODS OF ENTERTAINMENT.

To me, a great actor is someone that can transform me to another date and time, to another space like the bow of a Pirate's ship or the fantasy of Alice down in the rabbit hole... This man does that and pretty darn handsome to look at. I have enjoyed his films since "21 Jumpstreet"....... He does remind me of a young Charlie Chaplin. Good analogy!

He will be/already is a legend. The beautiful thing is he earned his way up. He's worked hard to get to where he is at and he has never been in a movie just for the sake of money. You can tell he loves every character he's ever played. Sometimes his movies are successful, sometimes they're not but you can tell he is right where he wants to be.

I couldn't agree more. I am in awe of JD' s acting ability. From Happy Hollow to Alice in Wonderland to Pirrates of Caribbean, he is truly a great actor and the movies definitely show his love of acting.

Depp is one of the most unique individuals and his talent is limitless. Of the current more youthful actors out there, the only one coming close is Robert Downey, Jr. If either of them are in a picture, I am going to see it because I know their performances will not disappoint.

I enjoy Depp but I find his performances in the Pirates movies to be over the top. Which is unfortunate because there is usually a nice subtlety to most of his performances (I suppose as subtle as you can get for a man with *very sharp* fingers). Dish Network

Its quite the love-in for Johnny Depp here. But let me say that while I have appreciated him in many roles, there is a facet to his performance that I do not think comes even close to the acting brilliance of Daniel Day-Lewis. I believe the benchmark of genius in acting (and I notice numerous people posting use this word with Depp) is the capacity to BECOME INVISIBLE as an actor. With Depp, I am somehow always aware of him...its like "oh," there is Johnny Depp playing (whatever). Day-Lewis, on the other hand becomes TOTALLY invisible, he disappears and is so at one with whatever character he is portraying that we experience him in toto as a different human being. Another phenomenal actor who has this capacity is Al Pacino. Recently I watched "You Don't Know Jack," a film about Jack Kevorkian. At the end I still couldn't figure out who had played Kevorkian. In fact, the performance was so extraordinary and consistent that it was not until the credits rolled across the screen at the end of the film that I saw that it was Al Pacino. A masterpiece of performance/character. Hey, different strokes for different folks as they say. Maybe part of the difficulty I have with relating to Depp is that so many of his roles have been "lighter" roles and just easier to shrug off.

Agree with Marat. Daniel Day Lewis is by far the best actor of this generation. His roles in There Will be Blood and Gangs of New York literally were two of the best performances I've ever seen on film. Depp is quirky, and his Hunter Thompson was brilliant, but he cannot single handedly take over a film like Lewis.

I also appreciate DDL, however they do different types of films..allow Depp his respect...as for the Taxpayers of The Pirates Franchise, remember he created Jack all on his own, people love him AND the movie is based on a RIDE! I loved Geff Rush, WAY before Shine and I love him as Barbossa...these are MOVIES, meant to entertain and they do it well...

I agree also with marat and the others, however, I'd like to add Gary Oldman to the list of actors that become "invisible." He's greatly overlooked. Maybe it's the fact that DDL and GO -do- become invisible that they aren't recognized? It's a double-edged sword.

There is enough legend status for everyone Oldman, Day-Lewis, and Depp are all great actors in their own rights. They all have different styles and talents, and they are all great.

When I was interning at Post Perfect, NYC in 1994, Johnny Depp was there working on a Don't Do Drugs commercial because River Phoenix had just died in his L.A. Bar/Club. I guess he was paranoid and he slammed the door in my face. He tried to get someone fired who worked there for saying to him – "I'm sorry about what happened with River Phoenix".

He's played the same character for the last 15 years. I guess it shouldn't surprise me in a TiVO Netflix age where people can watch the same show/movie over and over and over again that the fact that Depp hasn't grown as an actor doesn't phase them. Press hypes him and we buy into him like a bunch of sheep that we are. Yeah I include myself in this mix. I've bought into hypes before. Still do ocassionally. Now, Phillip Seymore Hoffman, Kevin Spacey, THOSE are high quality actors.....of course, this is all just my humble opinion. Ignore at will.
