Sarah McLachlan: Divorce almost killed my career

Divorce is hard, but it was nearly career-ending for singer Sarah McLachlan.

The "Angel" star told Spinner that "at one point she entered an emotional hole so horrid that she never expected to be able to make music again, let alone return to the stage."

"Yeah, the marriage part didn't quite work out," she said.  "Apparently that's a bit of an epidemic, so I just make light of it."

In 2008, McLachlan split from her husband, drummer Ashwin Sood, after 11 years.

"Coming to terms with the fact that my marriage was a failure was devastating and very difficult," the now-single mom of two said. "I blamed myself for a lot of things. It took me a very long time to get over it."

Like  most artists, McLachlan poured herself into her music and two songs, "U Want Me 2" and "Don't Give Up on Us" came out of the experience.  She said she helped move on with the help of loved ones and her kids.

"I have amazing friends, great family and two kids so I just got out of bed everyday and kept moving forward," she said. "I'm not one to sit and wallow - I would rather figure out a way around so I can move past it and be at peace with things. I don't like bad feelings gnawing away at me.

Just learned she was divorced 4 years ago.
Still love her music but lost a little respect.
It's so easy to dump a husband and take
    the money and run.

isn't she the one who sings that creepy song they play on the animal lovers commercial?

i'm sorry guys but seriously, she is not the only person to go through a divorce.....and i don't feel sorry for her. she has the financial resources that most divorcee's do not have. money makes a huge difference. if she was a single mother with a minimum wage job, battling a pysical disability, taking care of her kids and making a living then i might be impressed. stop QQ'ing creepy sarah....weren't your 15 minutes up a long time ago?

I thought recording the same dreary, weepy, simplistic, boring, female-centric music was what was killing your career.

I just have to say that whatever has happened to her in her personal life- as long as she's getting "back on track"- for her own sake- is a huge accomplishment... not many people in today's world can do that... as she has said it almost killed her career. I truly appreciate her music and talent. She is one of the best singers of our time!

I'm happy to read she stopped blaming herself for a failed marriage and moved past that b.s. It ain't easy, but it's self preservation. I hope Sarah enjoys life and music once more.

Some of the choices women of fame make for husbands surprise me. Sandra Bullock's choice was a shocker. Are these men mature enough to be equal spouses, to share a private life that is responsible financially and trustworthy emotionally? I haven't been seeing it (maybe an epidemic but poor choices). I hope Sandra and Sarah choose not to remarry.

I'm pretty sure the reason why there are such cruel comments on here is due to an absolute lack of caring about other people's problems. I'm sorry Sarah had a bad marriage and went through a rough divorce and didn't think she could go on with her career, but that happens to millions of men and women a year and yeah, it sucks. When it's presented as an entertainment story, most people's first reactions aren't "Poor Sarah McLachlan!" but rather, "Yeah, so? So did I and you're not writing about me." It's not Sarah's fault, it's the media's fault. They are over-inflating the importance of some of these stories to fill the need for content in this 24/7 world where companies need web-content to get hits to get advertising dollars. It's getting ridiculous. We don't need to know what Shania Twain's gynecologist ate for lunch. Honest, we don't.

One-hit wonder?? Just because your not a fan of her type of music doesn't give you the right to dismiss her success. She has a lot of well known songs and a large following. What have you done lately?

Well perhaps her marriage didn't work out BECAUSE she sees it's "a bit of an epidemic" and so she just "made light of it." Made light of her marriage ... there's your reason, Sarah. I've only been married 12 yrs, and it ain't been all roses, but I know enough to not "make light of it." And I won't blow off my failure at marriage just because there are millions of others who have failed too. But she's sure right ... it sure is an epidemic. Lucky my wife and I have had our vaccinations.

Actually, she said divorce was an epidemic, not marriage. She made light of the divorce because it's such a common thing. It's a tragedy really, that so many graduate grade school without the ability to read.

Yeah, and yet through losing our children and 50% of our income, MEN are expected to carry on just fine after divorce. At least she stopped at two songs and didn't devote entire strings of hits for the better part of a decade to losing a spouse, like Billy Joel. I imagine its easier, though, to hang on to the home you bought with million-dollar record contracts.

She recognized her Divorce for what it was.... a personal failure and a tragedy. She owned her mistake, took her lumps, and moved on. I respect that. I'm looking forward hearing some new music from her.

I canceled a date with Sarah around the time of her Vox hit. Sarah was very attractive (beautiful on the inside of course)but at the time her look was just not the style I usually dated, plus I didn't want to be in a relationship at that point. I'm my own person and I've been very successful in life and business, so being so-and-so's boyfriend would never have been my cup of tea. Last time I saw her was about 15 years ago in Tojo's Sushi, one of her favorite sushi places. I love her voice and her music, an incredible gift to the world.

I always felt that marriage ruined Sarah's career - once she was in a 'happy' relationship, her songwriting and the impact of her lyrics suffered as she was no longer getting her heart stomped - which really made for some great, hard-hitting songs in her early career. Now, she is too jaded / calloused to suffer the same pain and be willing to write about it. Motherhood and the awakening of her inner 'Lillith' has rendered her inconsequential and irrelevant.

Why are divorced women always referred to as "single moms?" Her ex is every bit as much a single dad as she is a single mom.

Because 99% of the time it's the mother who actually raises the children.

Yes, @SingleMom, because judges think there is absolutely nothing wrong with a woman with a degree who sits on her a$$ on the couch all day long in front of Judge Judy and Jerry Springer and steals half of her ex-husband's salary from a career she griped about daily for the amount of hours he worked.

Don't listen to the fake trolls, they're highly unhappy or extremely concieted! Or just wanna write bad ish to see how much they can get away with.
