Rihanna and Gaga: Head-to-head morning show concerts

“Good Morning America” and the “Today” show took their a.m. rivalry to a new level on Friday as the morning programs offered head-to-head concerts of top pop talent.

In one corner, there was Lady Gaga zip-lining onto “Good Morning America's” stage to kick off the show’s concert series, and in another corner, the “Today” show hosted Rihanna as the opener to their own summer concert series.

Over on “GMA,” Gaga arrived in high-flying style, dressed at one moment in a sheer red jumpsuit and the next in a sheer black one.

“I live halfway between reality and theater at all times,” she explained to “GMA’s” Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos. “And I was born this way.”

“It’s an absolute dream come true to be here today and to play in Central Park. I grew up five blocks from here,” she went on. “I’m so excited and so blessed and so happy to be here.”

Gaga offered a five-song performance, including the single “Hair” that you can view below, for the hordes of screaming little monsters, some of whom had been camping out for two days to get prime viewing real estate, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Meanwhile, on “Today,” Rihanna was similarly clothed for warmer temps in a pair of black hotpants and a cropped top. Of course, Rihanna is fresh off another performance at the Billboard Music Awards, a steamy segment with Britney Spears that had some questioning if it was a little too hot for TV. (Apparently it wasn't for "Today" host Matt Lauer, who noted that he watched the Billboard Awards performance 11 times and didn't see anything wrong with it.)

"I went to Twitter to see what my fans thought about it, and they really enjoyed seeing the two of us up there together," Rihanna said of the performance. "People are always going to talk, whether you're doing bad or good." The songstress offered up a few of her "Loud" hits for her "navy" gathered outside of "Today's" studios, including "Only Girl (In the World)" which you can see below.

Being a little monster myself, I watched Gaga's full performance on GMA & she has done it again! Every performance she does is filled with creativity, spectacular fashion, and mind-boggling entrances. Gaga is truly the greatest pop artist of our generation and she has transformed how people view pop music, as well as fashion & technology! (:

It was great to see Rihanna very talented and a very good singer. Lady Gaga has a beautiful voice but I can not get with some strange things she do in her show like dipping into a glass with mud.

I like both of these chicks. They're not afraid to be themselves, which can be hard with industry reps telling you how to be, every minute of the day. Also, Gaga standing up for the underdog is tres cool! Luv ya, ladies, keep doin' what ya do!!

Is it because she is black? I rather listen to her than to listen to that walking freak show he-woman.

I'm black and I agree with Fran... I didn't like Aaliyah, Brandy, or Ashanti and I don't like her. A marketing tool is all she is. And so is Nicki Minaj.

I have yet to hear Rihanna sing anything good! I have no idea what the obession is with her? Even on the radio the songs are awful and when she sings it person it's acgtually painful to watch and listen too! I just don't get it?

I saw Gaga on GMA, she has some wild outfits! During the interview she talked about school bullying. She told the kids to be the bigger person & ask the "picked on" kid to sit w/you in the cafeteria for lunch, etc...! I'm not a Gaga fan, but was really proud of her to say that! Good for her! 🙂
