'Hangover 2' earns $31.7 million on opening day

The holiday weekend is off to a good start for “The Hangover Part II" crew – the movie collected $31.7 million at the domestic box office on Thursday, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

That total gives “Part II” the third best Thursday opening total of all time, THR reports, a title that comes on the heels of the movie having the highest midnight screening open for an R-rated film. "Hangover Part II's" midnight shows on May 26 brought in $10.4 million.

It’s not jaw-dropping in comparison to movies like “Twilight Saga: Eclipse” which, as the Los Angeles Times points out, pulled in more than $30 million from post-midnight showings, but it is strong for an R-rated movie. For example, the R-rated sequel “Sex and the City 2” earned only $3 million from midnight openings around this time last year.

All of this without a lot of critical support, with the major complaint being an obvious one: It’s more or less the same story. (Or blueprint, if you will.)

The New York Times suggests that "If you superimposed a diagram that mapped out all the narrative beats, characters and jokes in 'The Hangover Part II' over one for 'The Hangover,' the two would align almost perfectly. Banking on the studio adage that there’s no success like a previous box office hit, Mr. Phillips and company dutifully recycle the first movie to increasingly diminishing ends."

E! Online describes it as a “buzz-kill follow-up that suffers from a pervasive sense of been there, drunk that,” while Roger Ebert explains that if you’ve seen the first one, he doesn’t really have to describe the plot to you for “Part II.”

And that's not a wholly bad thing. “This is a raunch fest, yes, but not an offense against humanity,” Ebert, who gave the film two stars, says, adding that "the movie has its share of laughs.”

A lot of younger moviegoers are banking on it: According to THR, 54 percent of Thursday's audience was under 25. Taking its opening day gross into consideration, it looks like “Hangover Part II” is on track to earn between $110 and $125 million over the holiday weekend.

I just recently saw this movie, and I have to say, I was disappointed! It was so similar to the first one, but in a different location. I kept seeing things in different scenes that reminded me of the original. It wasn't one of my favorites!:-D

Terrible film, terrible acting, just awful. (Mind you the first one was just as bad) Was it meant to be funny? Because it wasn't! Downright waste of time watching.

Let's see–The Hangover is the top movie, Book of Mormon is the top Broadway show, and Lady Gaga has the top CD. Yup, our entertainment culture is now officially in the sewer. The victory of obscenity and vulgarity is complete.

Loved the first Hangover. Had high hopes for Part 2- I really liked it, but it doesn't match the beast that is Part 1. Can't wait for Part 3! I can't imagine a scenario for Alan's wedding!!!

I saw the movie with my friends on Thursday and we all laughed our butts off... Great comedy, and a great follow up to the first one... I am pretty tired of all these critics over analyzing movies like these – if you want to laugh, go see this movie, if you want to nit-pick a movie for its storylines, messages, etc, this is def. not for you.

Now I knew it followed the same blue print as the first and knew that there was going to be things that were going to show up that obviously were in the trailers, but I was still moved to tears at some points from laughing. A great hillArious movie and a good way to burn some time for a laugh and be entertained. I just don't know if it deserves a number 3.

As for someof you posters, if you don't have anything co structure to say, do t say it. I and obviously a lot of other people don't want to hear your crap. As for other people who shamelessly plug their music, wears, and services, find another outlet. People have no respect for you when you do this. It's annoying and there are better ways if getting the word out there.

Saw it last night and when I arrived home the HO1 was starting on HBO or some cable channel. I watched it and felt a sense of letdown. The second movie is actually better than the first. It is more mysterious. Bangkok is the unknown element. Even if you have never been to Vegas it is still the US. Thailand however is a different animal altogether. By going there they took off the limits of what was possible. Even if you have lived there (and I did for two years) there is still this element that there is no bottom to where you could end up... Go out to a bar, end up in some hotel with...who knows who...

People, I bring you, in full regalia, the predominant logic of the TYPICAL AMERICAN MOVIEGOER.

Don't expect better, just settle for more (see STAR WARS, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, THE MATRIX). You will buy anything.

  34. Exactly

EXACTLY..there has to be a hangover of some sort and then stuff happens...or it wouldn't be THE HANGOVER. They could have played more on some stuff that happened in the camera shots that weren't necessarily explained in the 1st movie. Like their shananigans from the 1st movie, caused more crap to happen after the wedding.
