'Titanic' 3-D to be released in 2012

The much-anticipated 3-D version of James Cameron's "Titanic" will officially sail into theaters on April 6, 2012.

According to a statement from Paramount, the release date for the revamped edition of the Leonardo DiCaprio-Kate Winslet blockbuster was chosen to mark the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's voyage, which began April 10.

"There's a whole generation that's never seen ‘Titanic’ as it was meant to be seen, on the big screen. And this will be ‘Titanic’ as you've never seen it before, digitally re-mastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D," Cameron says of the 1997 film. "With the emotional power intact and the images more powerful than ever, this will be an epic experience for fans and newcomers alike."

"Titanic" is the second highest-grossing movie of all time, raking in over $600 million in the U.S. and $1.2 billion overseas.

I hope Cameron adds all the deleted scenes that were shown in the 3 disc set a few years ago.

Regarless if a movie was shot with 3D equipment like Avatar it still needs 3d conversion...like Avatar... It's funny how some of you call conversion fake but if you watch any of these movies you can't tell the difference, to help you out in this...if it hurts your eyes watching a certain shot it was more than likely shot with 3d cameras, if it doesn't then it was converted, they pay close attention to this, while shooting with 3d cameras you are limited.

You're not alone sarah, its just a gimmick so they can charge more. It makes sense for some stuff but why is The Great Gatsby remake in 3D?

No more political talk, last time I checked there was nothing about Presidents in the movie. Maybe the 3D version is different

Anyone else catch the Obama statment, what an idiot that person is. Oh yes George W is still stealing oil money. Oh speaking of breaking the law didn't he get a DUI, and I believe his lovely wife got drunk and hit someone. Very nice!! Someone to model your life after.

Since the film was never initially shot in 3D, won't the 3D effects in this recycled version suck??

I thought James Cameron didn't like 2D converted to 3D. He sure complained a lot about it. I guess it's alright when it's his movie. What a waste.

    Yikes! Really?
    Is he kidding?
The movie is only 14 years old as it is, not a generation.
Do you really need more money Cameron?
I hope he gets the best part of the movie right for 3D .... a naked Kate Winslet!
Other than that .... boooooring ....next.

Taking a film that was shot entirely in 2D, and converting it to some faux 3D, reminds me of when they take a classic black and white film and colorize it (or Turner-ize it).

Am I one of the few who thought this movie had just a terrible script? "You see people, Jack", "I see you". Kate's fiance chasing Jack with a gun. People who would normally never have anything to do with each other falling in deep love in 2 days. The list goes on.

Gawdawful. I remember laughing in the theatre at how bad it was. But I seemed to be the only one (other than my wife, who was right there with me).

Technically a marvel, but come on the love story theme was a complete joke.

I wish they'd re-do all the computer generated graphics. The shots of the ship with people walking around the deck were just so-so at the time, and look really stilted now. Computer graphics have come a long way since then. I've never thought "digitally added 3D" added enough of a 3D effect to be worthwhile, but if they re-did the computer graphics to present day standards, that would be worth watching!

  50. Hollywood needs some new ideas

Movies not originally shot with stereoscopic equipment will never have the 3D quality of those which did. It is a lame attempt to generate reveue from an old shoe. But hey, that's good business. You'll not find me wasting a single breath watching it.

    May 20, 2011 at 11:42 am | Report abuse |
    • Steve

Even with stereoscopic cameras, 3D doesn't really add much to the movie. The only movies I've seen that have really been enhanced by 3D have all been CGI...
